We also focus on child education and extracurricular activities in this edition. In case you are still wondering what activities to enrol your child in – have a look inside! On a more personal note I would like to extend a warm welcome to Amanda Espag who is joining our graphic designer corps. With her warm personality and quirky jokes she fi ts perfectly into our team. Our editor, Yulandi, is celebrating her birthday on the 13th of May – happy birthday Yulandi! We wish you all the best for the coming year! It is with great sadness in our hearts that we are saying goodbye to Alison – our Boss Lady. She made the ultimate sacrifice as a mother and decided to relocate to Johannesburg so that her son can have access to the therapy he needs. Alison, there is no words to describe how much we will miss you. You are such an amazing woman, co-worker and mother, and an inspiration to us all. We wish you and Ewan the best of luck in Johannesburg. Be grateful, and be blessed. Lots of love, Annelie Sub-Editor

DOUBLE THE LOVE “At last I had to admit that I am not Superwoman. ”

A

working parent is a father or a mother who engages in a work life, aside from their duties as a childcare provider.” This is according to Wikipedia, but in real life a working parent is so much more than just a childcare provider! We hear it across every nation, every country, among every tribe and kindred tongue – “Help! I’m a working mom!” It’s a universal cry and one so very many of us understand. If you are a mom, you are by definition a working mom.You don’t have to be collecting a paycheck to be a working mom. All you have to do is have someone around who calls you “mom,” relies on you, needs you, and is in your care somehow. Going to some place that we call “work,” performing duties for that “job,” and collecting that paycheck only add to the thrill, the stress, and the myriad tasks performed by every mom. Reality for many of us working moms is having too much to do and not enough time in which to do it. Trying to work outside the home plus being a wife and mother is not a job for sissies. Getting up so early in the morning, getting babies and then school-age children ready for day care and school, plus trying to get yourself ready for the work day takes some juggling. They say that the first half hour of the day sets the tone for the rest of the day. When I was still a full-time journalist I remember the tone being set for stress and anger. Going to work, dealing with the pressure and demands of that highintensity workplace, trying to perform my duties and yet thinking about and missing my children made me feel very, very burnt-out. I needed some time out and I wanted to spend more time with my twins before they disappeared into the big black hole that is called growing up. At last I had to admit that I am not Superwoman. As the daughter of a strong woman from a long line of strong, stubborn women this was not an easy decision. Horses have always been my solace so I decided to turn back to them to help me through this tough time in my life. As an internationally qualified riding instructor I decided to start teaching the odd lesson again until I have

decided where to now in my future. I thought that this would leave me with lots of time to spend with the twins (who are now four years old). Well the joke was on me! Before I knew it what started out as a half-hearted hobby to show my husband that I am earning some income (to feed said horses) soon turned out to be another full-time job. I had to cut down more and more on freelance journalism work to accommodate more lessons. Now I teach every day. But this time it has become a job that I can share with my children. Both Alex and Ayla adore horses and have a pony each. They love spending time at the stables while I teach. For me this has become a win-win situation. My children are growing up healthy in an outdoor environment and I get to experience this with them, all the while generating an income of my own. But what is the attraction of horse riding, especially for children? Is it the power and freedom a horse represents to a young child? Maybe. Or it could be the sheer fun of having a friend who is six feet tall. There are many reasons kids are attracted to horses and there are good reasons why I believe we should introduce our children to the world of horses. Sure, horseback riding is recreational and good physical exercise, but there are many intrinsic benefits as well. My non-horsey friends look at horses as an expensive habit or obsession. Personally I feel I can’t put a price on what my children get back from a horse. It’s a life-long love and activity that brings different rewards at different phases of their lives. I know many adult riders who tell me similar stories about how having an interest in riding kept them out of trouble during their teen years because they spent all of their time at the barn instead of hanging out with the opposite sex or getting into drugs. Do I miss the fast-paced arena of journalism? Sometimes. But I would never give up what I have now, which is to be part of my children’s lives in a much fuller way.

8. Give everyone a job

Whether it’s sorting laundry, feeding the dogs or picking up their business, or making their own beds, there are chores that even the littlest of helpers can do. This not only helps you, it teaches them responsibility. This is also a great time to spend quality time with your kids. You can turn tasks into fun games and make it fun for both you and your child. 9. Lift club.

Save time by having a lift club for school run’s. This not only gives you the chance to perhaps squeeze in some laundry or other house cleaning but it also saves petrol.

10. Play group

BusyMOMS FIND SOME TIME FOR YOURSELF

Life is unpredictable, especially with kids. Ever feel like there aren’t enough hours in one day? Time management is a tricky thing.You may not be able to avoid chaos altogether, but with our essential time-saving tips, you can learn how to maximize the time you have and make the most of those precious minutes. “The key is not to prioritize what’s on your scedule, but to schedule your priorities.” {Steven Covey}

1. Make extras

Whenever you cook a meal, always double (or triple) the recipe and freeze the extras. This way you can make sure more time is spent with your family at the dinner table or there is more time for you to read that book that you have you been looking forward to reading for months.

2. Prioritise

The key to organization is knowing what’s a priority and what can wait. Experts suggest that you divide your to do list into three sections: those things that need to be taken care of immediately, those that can get done anytime during the week, and those that are long-term or ongoing projects. Make sure that something fun like a tea date with girlfriends is also scheduled. It’s good to rest and blow off some steam with your close friends.

3. Post it

Hang a family calendar to keep track of everything from parent-teacher meetings to doctor’s visits to school sport’s games. Make sure you write up all your gym sessions or tennis games as well (wink wink). Post an on-going grocery list on the fridge to make sure you don’t forget to buy something.

4. Learn how to say ‘no’

You only have that much time in a day. If you cannot find the time to finish your own tasks, don’t attempt to help someone else and have to tell them that you could not do it, rather say no.

5. Use the Internet

Pay bills online, buy gifts from websites and save time by researching items online before you head out to the stores. This is an easy tool that can save a lot of time. Or you can use as an excuse to go to the mall to buy that much needed new dress.

Create a play group between friends. You can rotate the venue each week so the mom’s who are not responsible for the kids that week have time to do some shopping, for example. This is a great way to keep kids busy and to open up some time up in the day for yourself. Time management can be one of the most difficult skills to master. Time management is not like any other skill, it takes practice. However, in this case, practice may not always make perfect. In fact, many mothers agree that there simply isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done. Even the most organized person will become stressed out when short on time.

7. Organize, organize, organize!

Get a file cabinet and keep a copy of everything. Keep a folder for each child so you know exactly where to find all of their information (school, doctors, etc.). Make copies of things such as phone numbers and class lists, and keep one at home and one at work.

Preparing Winter

A

utumn and winter are beautiful seasons but the beauty vampires like biting winds, dipping temperatures, and drying indoor heat, can suck the life right out of your skin and hair. Let’s prepare for the winter months ahead. Let’s face it. We’re all guilty of falling into a beauty routine (or lack thereof) that just isn’t doing it for us. Even worse? Our routine might even be harming our skin. What to do? The first step to recovery is to cut these bad habits…now!

Skin Sin #1: Not using SPF 30 on your

face - EVERYDAY Wearing sunscreen on a daily basis helps prevent blotchiness, brown spots, skin discolorations and facial red veins. Still making excuses? How about the fact that the ozone layer is depleting every year and your body needs assistance with blocking out the sun’s rays? If THAT still doesn’t convince you to slab on the white stuff, then let me leave you with two words: Skin cancer. Enough said.

to wash your face before you hit the hay. No exceptions! Letting skin stew in make-up and oil build-up leads to nothing but problems like clogged pores, dull skin and even acne breakouts. Why is washing your face at night so important? When your body is at rest, its temperature rises slightly and absorbs all of the nutrients you put on your face. So next time you drag yourself back in the house after a long day at work and feel tempted to just go straight to bed, just remind yourself you’re bringing the whole day’s dirt, grime and oil in bed with you!

Skin sin #4: Over-Scrubbing And then there is the other end of the spectrum over washing! Have you ever heard of the saying “too much of a good thing?” As weird as it may sound, you can over-exfoliating your face. In fact, when you do, it actually causes the over-production of oil and your skin’s breakouts can even worsen by spreading bacteria. Instead, exfoliate two to three times a week.

Skin sin #2: Using dirty make-up brushes The thought of using a dirty dishrag to wash your dishes is pretty gross, right? The same idea goes for using dirty makeup brushes. Imagine all of the bacteria building up inside your pores, causing possible bacterial infections and pimples - not to mention creating muddied colors on your face. Take five minutes once a week to clean your brushes with a gentle shampoo, rinse well and let them dry overnight.

Skin sin #5: Popping Pimples I completely understand. Picking at a zit is the most tempting thing, ever! But the reality is that squeezing a pimple actually pushes the bacteria deeper into the skin, which can cause inflammation. Even worse? The life span of the pimple can actually increase! Who wants that? No matter how much you want to, avoid touching blemishes. Yes, there are over the counter remedies that you can try, but if the stubborn thing still won’t go away, make an appointment to see your dermatologist who can then take the swelling down with a cortisone shot.

Skin sin #3: Skipping a night (or two, or three) of washing your face I’m going to let you in on a little secret and you’re not going to like it: Your mom was right…you HAVE

There you have it my beauties. The next step to recovering from an incorrect skincare routine is acknowledging that change – although sometimes scary – can be for the best! Sourcce: http://www.makeup.com/bad-skin-habits/

Gelukkige Moedersdag

Die Bittersoet van

H

my kosbare seuntjie gebore is het ek my lewe weer in KLEUR begin leef! Altyd’

Don’t just look at the fever, but the child’s overall behaviour and level of energy. If the child is very lethargic, crying excessively or has a rash, then there is definite reason for treatment or to consult your doctor. Remember that fevers can cause discomfort and dehydration, so make sure that your child is drinking fluids. Treatment also depends on the age of the child. In infants under 3 months, a fever can be a sign of a potentially serious illness and you must consult your doctor immediately. 6. Is it necessary to give children the flu shot? From what age? These side effects don’t usually require any treatment and resolve within a couple of days. Please note that the vaccine does not contain a live virus, so your child will not get flu resulting from the vaccine. The vaccine does protect against infection from the identified prevalent flu strains and is definitely recommended for children as they are more susceptible to influenza and resulting complications, as are the elderly. 7. My 4 year old is constantly getting ear infections after a cold. Is he/she likely to outgrow this or should preventative measures be taken to keep water out of his/her ears? I would refer you to your doctor or ENT to determine the cause of the recurrent ear infections. They would need to assess the movement of the eardrum, the Eustachian tube, the presence of fluid, and that hearing has not been affected. It is difficult to say that they will outgrow it as this will be dependent on the cause of the infections. Until such time, I would advise you to try and keep the ears as dry as possible.

STRONG BONES: YOURS TO KEEP

O

ur bones remain strong throughout young adulthood. As we hit our 30s, they slowly begin to thin out. In women, this process accelerates after menopause, but there are ways to put on the brakes. One of the best lines of defense is your diet - eating the right foods can give you the maximum bone strength and boost your bone density at any age.

Got Milk?

Calcium is the cornerstone of strong bones. Adults up to age 50 need 1,000mg per day. Beginning at age 51, women need 1,200mg every day, and when men hit 71, they need to hit that mark, too. The pop star of calcium sources is undoubtedly milk. A single cup of milk, whether skim, low-fat, or whole, has 300mg of calcium.

Yogurt and Cheese

Not a milk drinker? A cup of yogurt has at least as much calcium as a cup of milk. Even if you’re lactose intolerant, you can probably eat yogurt and hard cheeses without any problem. Or try lactose-free dairy products. Removing lactose from milk and dairy foods does not affect the calcium content.

Sardines

Milk and dairy products are not the only ways to get calcium. Another excellent source is sardines. All those little fish bones have just what you need to build bone mass in your own body. Eating 90ml of canned sardines delivers a little more calcium than a cup of milk.

If dairy products, sardines, and leafy greens leave you cold, consider eating fortified foods. These are products that do not naturally contain calcium but have been enhanced with varying amounts of the essential mineral. Breakfast foods are a great start fortified orange juice has about the same calcium as milk, and fortified cereals deliver up to 1,000mg per cup.

Does your diet support your Calcium needs?

Calcium Supplements

It’s always best to get your nutrients from food. But if you don’t get enough calcium from your diet, supplements can help fill the gap. For the best absorption, take no more than 500mg at one time.

Salmon

Salmon and other types of fatty fish offer an array of bone-boosting nutrients. They contain vitamin D, which assists in calcium absorption. They’re also high in omega-3 fatty acids, which may also help bones. Fish oil supplements have been shown to reduce bone loss in women and may help prevent osteoporosis.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds can bolster bone health in several ways. Walnuts and flaxseeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids. Peanuts and almonds contain potassium, which protects against the loss of calcium in urine. Nuts also contain protein and other nutrients that play a supportive role in building strong bones.

Hold the Salt

Salt is a major culprit in depriving the body of calcium. The more salt you eat, the more calcium gets carried away by urine. Sticking to a low-salt diet can help you keep more calcium to strengthen your bones.

Sunshine

OK, sunshine is not a food. But the body produces vitamin D in response to sunlight. Without vitamin D, our bodies cannot properly absorb the calcium in foods. Source: http://www.webmd.com/osteoporosis/ss/slideshow-superfoods-for-your-bones

Your first step to bone health.

Greens

You might be surprised to learn that calcium is plentiful in many vegetables. Go for dark leafy greens such as Chinese cabbage and spinach. The traditional soul food favorites turnip greens, offer a lot of calcium, too. One cup of chopped, cooked turnip greens has about 200mg of calcium.

STAYING HYDRATED

W

hen the temperatures rise, getting enough to drink is important whether you’re playing sports, traveling or just sitting in the sun. It is also critical for your heart health. Keeping your body hydrated helps the heart to pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles and it helps the muscles work efficiently. If you’re well hydrated, your heart doesn’t have to work as hard. Dehydration can be a serious condition that can lead to problems ranging from swollen feet or a headache to life-threatening illnesses such as heat stroke.

How much water do you need? What does being well hydrated mean? The amount of water a person needs depends on climatic conditions, clothing worn and exercise intensity and duration, A person who perspires heavily will need to drink more than someone who doesn’t. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, may also mean you need to drink more water. People with cystic fibrosis have high concentrations of sodium in their sweat and also need to use caution to avoid dehydration. Some medications can also act as diuretics, causing the body to lose more fluid. Thirst isn’t the best indicator that you need to drink. If you get thirsty, you’re already dehydrated! The easiest thing to do is pay attention to the color of your urine. Pale and clear means you’re well hydrated. If it’s dark, drink more fluids. If you want to know exactly how much fluid you need, weigh yourself before and after exercise, to see how much you’ve lost through perspiration. It is a particular good guide for athletes training in the hot summer months.

For every 500g of sweat you lose, that’s 500ml water you’ll need to replenish. It’s not unusual for a high school rugby player, wearing pads and running through drills, to lose 2,5kg or more of sweat during a summer practice. Not sweating during vigorous physical activity can be a red flag that you are dehydrated to the point of developing heat exhaustion.

Water is best. For most people, water is the best thing to drink to stay hydrated. Sources of water also include foods, such as fruits and vegetables which contain a high percentage of water. Sports drinks with electrolytes, may be useful for people doing high intensity, vigorous exercise in very hot weather, though they tend to be high in added sugars and calories. It’s healthier to drink water while you’re exercising, and then when you’re done, eat a healthy snack like orange slices, bananas or a small handful of unsalted nuts. Be cautioned against fruit juices or sugary drinks, such as fizzy drinks because they can be hard on your stomach if you’re dehydrated. It’s also best to avoid drinks containing caffeine, which act as a diuretic and causes you to lose more fluids. Drinking water before you exercise or go out into the sun is an important first step. Drinking water before is much more important, otherwise, you’re playing catch-up and your heart is straining.

Not just for athletes or exercise. Hydration isn’t just important during physical activity. Sitting in the sun on a hot or humid day, even if you aren’t exercising, can also cause your body to need more fluids. People who have a heart condition, are older than 50 or overweight may also have to take extra precautions. It’s also a good thing to keep tabs on your hydration if you’re traveling. You might sweat differently if you’re in a different climate. Source: https://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/GettingHealthy/

HEALTHY PREGNANCY

N

ow that you know you’re pregnant, it’s more important than ever to take care of yourself both physically and emotionally. You can boost your chances of having a problem-free pregnancy and a healthy baby by following a few simple guidelines:

1. Go for regular prenatal check-ups.

You need about 300 extra calories/day in pregnancy and if you are very thin, very active or carrying multiples you will need even more calories. Try eating: • lean meats • fruits • vegetables • whole grain products • low fat dairy products

Take care when preparing food. •

Wash hands and fresh produce before eating to avoid food-borne illnesses eg. listerosis – (bacteria form) if produce is not washed properly and toxoplasmosis – (bacteria form) if food is undercooked. Avoid raw fish, undercooked meat, unpasteurized cheese and raw eggs. Limit your caffeine intake to about 200mg/day (2 cups) and try to maintain a healthy weight.

2. Avoid alcohol and tobacco

4. Physical activity

Tobacco (smoking) is the main factor in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), it also puts you at a higher risk for stillbirth, premature labour, low birth weight babies and could cause asthma in your baby later in life.

C O N TA I N S F E R R O C H E L

You will also need more essential nutrients eg. calcium, iron and folic acid. Your healthcare provider will prescribe them to you at your regular prenatal visits. Remember a supplement does not replace a healthy diet.

You can choose to follow up at your GP, gynae or midwife where they will do routine urine, blood pressure and weight tests as well as necessary blood tests and foetal monitoring. Alcohol intake can cause a wide range of foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD’s) and it inhibits neural development.

C O N TA I N S F E R R O C H E L

150min/week low impact exercise will aid you in a healthy pregnancy. Swimming, walking, yoga and pilates are all good options because they focus on strength, flexibility and relaxation.

5. Sleep & Rest

Your body is working hard to accommodate the growth of a new life so you will naturally feel more tired. Try to get 8 hours of sleep per night. (continued on next page)

CONTINUED 6. Dental care

Take extra care of your gums and teeth. They are more prone to inflammation and infection during pregnancy due to your hormonal changes.

7. Eliminate environmental dangers

Some jobs can be hazardous to you and your developing baby. If you’re routinely exposed to chemicals, heavy metals (like lead or mercury), certain biologic agents, or radiation, you’ll need to make some changes as soon as possible. Keep in mind that some cleaning products, pesticides, solvents, and lead in drinking water from old pipes can also be harmful. Talk to your doctor or midwife about what your daily routine involves, so you can come up with ways to avoid or eliminate hazards in your home and workplace.

8.Take care of your emotional health

9. Avoid stretchmarks

Make sure you use creams and oils on your growing tummy to avoid stretchmarks. It’s important to start this from day 1 to prevent it.

10. Keep track of your baby’s movement.

After about 18 weeks of pregnancy, you will probably start to feel your baby move. Keep track of how often your baby moves. If you think your baby is moving less than usual, call your doctor or midwife.

Nutritional support during pregnancy and breastfeeding

When your pregnancy test comes back positive, you’ve begun a life-altering journey. As the baby grows and changes through each stage of pregnancy, you go through changes, too: in your body, emotions, and lifestyle. You need information to answer your questions and help you make good decisions for a healthy baby and a healthy you. Follow these guidelines and remember, a healthy pregnancy ensures a healthy baby! Source: http://www.babycenter.com/0_twelve-steps-to-a-healthypregnancy_9174.bc?page=1

Many women feel like they’re on an emotional roller coaster at one time or another during pregnancy. But if your mood swings are extreme or interfering with your daily life, you may be suffering from depression, a relatively common condition. If you’ve been feeling low for more than two weeks and nothing seems to lift your spirits — or if you’re feeling particularly anxious — share your feelings with your caregiver so you can get a referral for professional help.

Curiosity is key to your child’s

by Cheri Fuller

A

s long as kids stay curious, they are motivated to learn, but when their curiosity dies, their learning ability suffers. Many experts believe curiosity may be the most important factor for children’s brain development and their ability to tackle academic tasks. Like curiosity, thinking is perhaps one of the most important subjects of all, and it begins at home. Use opportunities in real, everyday living to give your kids problem-solving practice. Let them help figure out how far apart to space vegetable and flower seedlings in the garden. Before a trip, let them help plan and budget the vacation money and navigate using maps while enroute to your destination. Turn a walk to the park into a nature investigation with an inexpensive magnifying glass, a bag for interesting rocks or leaves, and a critter jar made out of a plastic container with a mesh lid to let in air.

At the same time, don’t feel like you have to give all the answers; it’s valuable to help your child think through the question and ask, “What do you think about that?” or “That’s a really great question,” and then guide him through applying facts he’s already learned or coming up with a theory of his own. If you’re too busy to talk about it at the time or don’t know the answer, write your child’s questions on an index card and search it together on the internet. When kids are in primary school and high school, critical-thinking skills are developing, so it’s vital to keep an open dialogue with them about issues and situations they face. When they make a statement that contrasts with your values, avoid overreacting. Instead, guide them through the thought processes, and encourage them to consider what determines right and wrong. But let your children explain their views and not always be put down for their ideas.

Ask curious questions when you go to the Kruger National Park together like “Why do you think this animal has long legs? Is this animal a meat eater or a grass eater?” Give them toothpicks and say, “What are all the ways we can use a toothpick?” Brainstorm and see who can figure out how to use something that would normally be thrown away. “What can we do with a styrofoam tray the chicken was in?” (after washing, of course!) And there are many other creative ideas kids can think of on their own.

Also, find out what the school is doing to inspire kids’ curiosity. If your discoveries prove disappointing, band with other parents to brainstorm for creative ideas and buy hands-on science equipment (lots of which is inexpensive). Meet with teachers and the principal to see how parents can partner to improve the school environment and build students’ sense of wonder, curiosity, and motivation for learning.

And most of all, take your kids’ questions seriously - even though little ones ask a lot of questions that can seem endless. (Remember, this curiosity, these questions, are a key to his desire to learn, so avoid putting out the fire!)

1. Start with your child’s interests:

How can you spark curiosity in your child? The virtuous cycle starts with understanding your child’s interests. Find out what fascinates your child and build from there.

desire to learn... 2. Ask curiosity questions:

New information creates a curiosity gap. When children come across new ideas that don’t fit with what they already know, they are motivated to fill in this gap. They ask more questions... which leads to more learning. Ask your child curiosity questions that connect their interests to unexplored territory.

3. Help your child recognize the value of learning:

When children see the utility of information, they care more about the topic at hand. The lesson is continuously reinforced when students see the value of the knowledge they gained. Connect new knowledge to everyday applications to increase interest and curiosity.

Let’s nurture curious children together Curiosity and wonder are precious components of a child’s education. We believe in doing everything we can to nurture curiosity, not stifle it. When teachers and parents work together to foster curiosity in children, we create a learning environment that helps children be curious for life. TE A M SPORT S how par tici pati ng i n a te am c a n b e n e f it c h ildre n

Sports, whether team-based or individual, are a great activity for children that provide a variety of benefits other than physical activity.

P

articipation in sports can help build self-esteem and confidence, can motivate children to excel academically and can help build social skills. Participation can also teach children the benefits of goal-setting and practice.

Many parents want their children to participate in team sports. There are numerous benefits that your child could learn through participating in team sport. When encouraging your child to join a team, take his interests into consideration and present several options rather than choosing for him. If your child is participating in a sport he enjoys, he will be far more likely to stick with it, even through losses or disappointments. Team sports provide children with the opportunity to develop and strengthen their social skills. Successful participation in team sports requires children to

learn how to cooperate with their teammates, how to follow directions and how to develop friendships. Participation in team sports can also teach children about being a "good sport" in helping them develop the ability to show appreciation and respect to others for their accomplishments and to empathize with those who may not be as successful. Equally, your child will learn how to appropriately cope with loss and disappointment, which is a skill that will serve him well in later life. Participation in sports helps to build character traits. It can have a positive effect on your child's selfesteem and confidence. Each child on a team plays an important part in the success of the group. Your child will learn to use his strengths and discover that hard work can pay off well. Being part of a team can help your child develop his identity and have a solid sense of self. It also helps kids develop discipline and perseverance. They learn to set goals and learn how to cooperate to achieve those goals. They learn that by working hard, they can accomplish the things that they want in their lives. Participating in sports will help keep your child healthy and prevent obesity. Children who play sports regularly, are getting good exercise. Regular exercise has numerous health benefits, including strengthening of the immune system and heart, making blood

flow more efficient and preventing the likelihood of developing high blood pressure or heart disease in the future. Exercise also releases endorphins, a brain chemical that can lessen depression and anxiety. Sports also promote spending time outdoors in the fresh air. In today’s world, it can be hard to encourage children to spend time outside because many children would rather sit indoors and play video games. However, sports are a wonderful tool for getting our children off the couch and into the fresh air. Statistics show that children who are involved in sports while in high school are more likely to experience academic success and graduate from high school. Motor skills, strategic thinking and even math skills are learned by playing sports. Children develop strategic thinking as they figure out how they are going to play and the best way to get around a player or score. Math skills are used as they calculate scores.

• Having realistic expectations for your child. • Learning about the sport and supporting your child's involvement. • Allow your child to talk with you about their experiences with the coach and other team members. • Helping your child handle disappointments and losing, and modeling respectful spectator behavior. • It is important for adults to encourage their children to be involved in some type of team sport. While the actual context of the sport can vary greatly, simply being on the team and physically exerting themselves can cause your child to lead a happier and healthier life.

Parents need to be actively involved in order to raise a positive attitude towards sports. They can do this by doing the following: • Giving your child emotional support and positive feedback. • Attending your child’s games and talking about them afterward.

Bullying - Girls can too Most studies focus on boys who bully but girls can be bullies too and when they bully, it can be an entirely different beast. We think of physical violence and outward taunting, but their tactics are often quiet and convert. It is difficult to recognise girls who bully because they socialize differently than boys. It is hard to tell a group of girls who are bullying apart from a group who are innocently standing around. Since girls bond differently, they bully differently too.

THE ABC’S OF EDUCTION & EXTRA MURAL 2015

Playgroup scuffles, name calling, stealing personal items and damaging property are commonly examples of bullying behaviour. Girls are not so obvious when bullying. When girls bully they use things like alienation, ostracism, deliberate and calculated random exclusions and spread of rumours to harass their peers. Examples of these are: • • • • • • • •

Get other kids to gang up on one or more peer as a way of exerting control, Incite other children to act out aggressively and then sit back and enjoy the show, Form groups that pick and choose members at random and exclude others without real reason, Anonymous prank phone calls or harassing email form dummy accounts, Playing jokes or tricks designed to embarrass and humiliate, Whispering in front of other kids with the intent to make them feel left out, Name calling, rumour spreading and other malicious verbal interactions, Encouraging other kids to ignore or pick on a specific child.

Adults quickly intervene where there is violence or physical acting out of any sort. All too often the bullying by girls is brushed off as cruel but normal social interactions. When girls bully it often goes unaddressed. Adults don’t label the tactics used by girls as bullying, and therefore the bullied girls don’t know where to turn for help. The mind-set still exists that not all kids can be friends and the social structure of the school system encourages the formation of groups and reinforces the idea of social hierarchies. This makes it slow to recognise things like exclusion and alienation as something sinister. These behaviours are often dismissed as an unfortunate part of the normal formation of peer groups.

Parents must look for the following evidence if it is suspected that their daughter might be a victim: • • • • • • • • • • •

Change in appetite or eating habits; Loss of interest in school and schoolwork; Difficulty in going to sleep or staying asleep (insomnia); Frequent stomach-aches, headaches or excuses to stay at home; Sudden withdrawal from family activities; Change from happy and secure to moody and depressed; Torn or blood soaked clothes; Change in the group of girls she normally hangs out with, especially if her friend suddenly stops coming around; Sudden need for extra money for school lunches; Increased anxiety; Spending more time on the computer and not wanting you to see what she is doing online.

To be beaten up emotionally on a daily basis does damage the victim and it is time to accept the fact that girls also suffer from bullying as is the case with boys.

Reading comprehension is vital in learning

I

noticed my kids struggled with comprehension exercises at school and I was quite disappointed to find that bookshops offered little or nothing to help with comprehension. As a parent I was concerned my kids did not read enough. I was worried about what they actually gained in understanding from what they did read. The only way to check was to go back, read the two or three pages from which ever book they had read, and then make up some questions just to gauge their understanding. Of course it was time consuming to do that. I am an avid reader myself and I came to the following conclusions: 1. Children don’t read enough books and they don’t have the ability to do critical thinking. As a lot of emphasis in school is on rote learning. 2. Parents and teachers don’t have the time to source literature and then make up questions to assess the children’s understanding of what they have just read. 3. Understanding is imperative to learning. My name is Maryam and I live in Lydenburg. I have just self-published a set of three comprehension workbooks for children. Book One (grade 3-4) Book Two (Grade 5-6) Book Three (Grade 7) Each book has 12 stories/texts. Book One has 2 question sections. Book Two and Three have 3 question sections after each story. Even though the books have grade guidelines, I recommend that parents buy the entire set and start the kids on Book One. I wanted to do something that would benefit the youth and therefore I started working on the three comprehension books. For two years I took advice from teachers and publishers as I was writing.

My books have a range of texts to test children using picture stories, recipes, interviews, menus, instruction leaflets etc. I added a whole range of texts to make learning fun and also because I wanted to use practical examples to test comprehension. Children need to know how to read a circus poster, advertisement, magazine article etc. I even added a mock email and web page to Book Three. I believe children need to learn how to observe, interpret, define and reason. And it should be done using realistic examples. I want to really give kids a mind-workout. They need to be able to think about what they have just read in multiple ways and that is achieved using a variety of question types like match column A to B, order of events, synonyms, homophones and provide the question instead of the answer.

“In short, I want to get kids thinking again.” We need to ignite that thirst for learning in the youth and I believe my comprehension workbooks is a great start. Here are some statistics below to give you an idea why comprehension workbooks are necessary to learning: The consequence of pupils being taught to ‘parrot’ rather than read independently was that, after five years of school, 13 percent of 11-year-olds were illiterate and most were able to score no more than 4 out of 20 on a comprehension exercise. - S A’s Shocking Literacy Stats “The connection between the ability to interpret information and the ability to learn from a range of texts is clear and is reflected in the relationship between reading and academic achievements.”South Africa. Independent, Co-educational School

Over the last 24 years, Penryn has established itself as one of the preeminent schools in the country and as a leader in education in South Africa. Each year, we, at Penryn, strive to improve on the year before, in order to provide a holistic, broad based education for children under our care from Gr 000 - Gr 12. While firmly committed to the implementation of educational best practice, we at Penryn believe that this alone is not enough. The happiness of each child in our care is of paramount importance to us and it is here that we believe Penryn succeeds best. Our focus on developing young people through positive reinforcement is one of the cornerstones on which we build our school. The success of this policy is

affirmed every day by the sound of laughter of children at play and of work that permeates throughout school. At Penryn, we measure success by the width of the smiles on “our” children’s faces! Penryn’s values are strongly grounded in a Christian ethos and we strive to develop each child’s unique talents and abilities so that they may grow into the person God intended them to be. To this end, we maintain an open and consultative approach in which we partner with you the parent, in order to assist your child to reach his or her full potential. Our doors are always open and our staff welcome any queries or suggestions that you may have.

FOR SUCCESS, CHOOSE THE BEST!

A

s a mom, you want the best for your children - but what do you do when little Thabang just can’t seem to grasp that “c” stands for “k”? Or when Wynand comes home with another 33% on his Maths test? How will they ever get past those hurdles? It’s very easy to get discouraged, but so hard to find quality and effective ways to help your children. Instead of letting the matter weigh too long and too hard on your mind, rather let us carry this burden for you – and make it a burden no more! Here at Kip McGrath Education Centre in Nelspruit, we know that education is no laughing matter – but we are sure to put a smile on your child’s (and your) face again! WHO ARE WE? Kip Nelspruit is staffed with experienced, qualified teachers who really care and want to make a difference. We understand the challenges of 30+ classrooms, continuous curriculum changes and supporting children who have succumbed to low self-esteem. We are in our eleventh year of operation and we have established relationships with many of the schools in our area. Our system is one of a combined effort between us, you as parents and your child’s school. The Kip McGrath system is a “back to basics” approach which starts out with a FREE assessment. We take into consideration things such as learning disabilities, emotional upsets, whether your child has moved schools or if they have been ill. At Kip McGrath, we not only care about education, we care – full stop. HOW DOES IT WORK? • A remedial programme is designed for each individual child, whether in Mathematics, Reading, English or Afrikaans. We also offer extension courses for children who want to excel at school. • Children attend weekly lessons of 80 minutes, which run on a rotation system between computers, reading and written tasks, making it much easier for children who struggle to

concentrate. With each completed task, the child has a sense of accomplishment, and so their confidence grows. • Reinforcement of class work is done with short, to-the-point homework activities. • Classes are small (six learners to one teacher), which makes it easier to identify and resolve individual mistakes and hurdles. • Time is set apart with the teacher where specific learning obstacles are tackled. • Each child is placed on a level that he or she can cope with, and our supportive teachers lead them through the graded programme to more complex work, until they reach the correct level. Your child is encouraged to work at his/her own pace, which aids in re-building self-esteem and confidence in his/her own abilities. • Classes are presented in both English and Afrikaans medium to make your child feel as comfortable and as at home as possible. • Our computer programme is child friendly, easy to use and navigate and filled with fun items like messages from teacher, rewards and educational games. LEARNING IS FUN! At Kip Nelspruit, we make teaching and learning fun. Not only are our books colourful and our teachers fun, friendly and funky, but we also know that an ice cream puts a smile on a child’s face and a cup of hot chocolate warms up a tummy in the winter months! Of course, when Aunty Nicci (our centre director) celebrates her birthday – its cake for everyone! What a way to end a lesson!

Pass with flying colours

Dr Louis Rossetti, an expert in communication deviations once said: “Anything that interferes with the child’s ability to interact with the environment in a normal manner is a potential source of, or contributing factor to the presence of developmental delay.” Conveniently situated in the heart of Nelspruit, Flying Colours brings you the ultimate experience to meet your child’s therapy and learning support needs. Your child has an amazing, unique mind and if stimulated correctly from an early age, there is no limit to the potential he/she can achieve.

We believe that treatment and educational methods that work for one child, may not necessarily work for another. The one successful common denominator for all children is early intervention, and that is exactly the recipe that we follow to ensure button-on prognosis. Other than providing expert care, one of the main objectives for Flying Colours is to train parents and educators alike to identify developmental delays as soon as they start to appear. Early diagnosis and intervention is provided in a fun, relaxed, one of a kind environment via an array of treatment techniques to perfectly meet the needs of each individual. Early stimulation and intervention is the absolute key to reach your child’s full potential, and is the best investment any parent can make in his/ her child’s future. Even though the current education system is a one-size-fits-all recipe, our main focus is set on addressing the developmental challenges a child may face. Early childhood intervention is a support and educational structure for young children (aged birth to school age). It refers to the treatment of children that have been identified to have or be at risk for a developmental delay. Treatment could be a combination of therapies, implementing a multidisciplinary approach. The family is an integral part of the therapeutic approach, as the mission is to increase

the child’s functional potential and empower the family to be the child’s best ally. An early intervention assessment may also assist in early diagnosis of disorders such as autism, language delays, sensory processing delays, or learning disorders. However, in most situations parents and caregivers only realise that their child needs therapy at a later stage. Thoughts like: “Where did we as parents fail?” and “He will not cope in a mainstream school” are often thoughts and feelings parents may experience when faced with an initial therapeutic referral, but in the majority of children it’s not the case. Children require therapy when basic developmental abilities are weak. Due to this, a sturdy structure of learning cannot be built. Therefore, an effective therapeutic program must first identify gaps in the foundation of learning. It is the therapists at Flying Colours’ goal to assist your child with this process. One of Flying Colours’ best assets is our interdisciplinary team. We work as a team to help your child develop his/her full potential. We aim to use our experience, skills and expertise to touch and change the lives of every child we are privileged to assist. As of March 13, this all-in-one centre has been offering services in the following fields: • Speech, Language and Hearing therapy • Psychology • Physiotherapy • Occupational therapy • Learning support (Educational therapy & Remedial therapy) • Music therapy • BabyGym • Mind Moves By aiding families who have at-risk children with resources and support that will assist them in maximizing their child’s physical, cognitive and social/ emotional development, a possible long journey can be turned into a walk in the park while your child passes with Flying Colours!

BRAINFOOD for

KIDS

A

s fast as children whiz from classroom to activity to home and back again, their brains are just as actively and dramatically growing and changing. Early childhood years are critical for brain development, and what they eat affects focus and cognitive skills. The following foods can help kids stay sharp all day long, and affect brain development well into the future.

Breakfasts are the best

Breakfast is critical for school-age kids. Research has shown that breakfast-eaters do better academically and have fewer behavior problems than breakfast-skippers. But high-sugar foods set kids up for a midmorning energy crash - right when they’re likely to be in the middle of the more demanding classes, like maths or reading.

Eggs

Eating a high-nutrient protein like eggs will help kids concentrate. How to serve it: Fold scrambled eggs into a whole-grain tortilla or on wholegrain toast for a filling breakfast or late-afternoon snack.

Oats

Protein- and fiber-rich oatmeal helps keep heart and brain arteries clear. In one study, kids who ate oatmeal did better on memory-related academic tasks than those who ate a sugary cereal. Oats digests slowly, providing kids with a steady stream of energy, as well as giving them protein. How to serve it: Add cinnamon or serve with freshly cut fruit, sprinkle in raisons or low fat flavoured yoghurt.

Leveraging Lunch

What kids eat at lunch is critical to how well they maintain their energy through the afternoon. Wholewheat sandwiches are rich in fibre, but also rich in folate, a B vitamin that is used to manufacture memory cells in the brain and to improve allertness. How to serve it: Win over a white-bread eater with peanut butter, or low-fat cheese with cooked ham on whole wheat bread.

Milk and Milk products:

Milk is well known as a great source of protein,

t:

vitamin D, Calcium and phosphorus. A diet rich in low-fat dairy seems to protect children from obesity. How to serve it: Glass of milk with healthy whole wheat sandwich or low fat yoghurt or some cheese wedges.

Nuts and Seeds

Packed with protein, essential fatty acids, and vitamins and minerals, nuts and seeds may boost mood and keep your nervous system happy. How to serve it: Spread macadamia or peanut butter on a whole-grain cracker or bread.

Fruit

Kids often crave sweets, especially when they’re feeling sluggish. Fresh fruit are a perfect afternoon snack and contain a variety of antioxidants. Strawberries and blueberries: These two juicy favorites are ultrahigh in antioxidants. A diet rich in such brain foods has been shown to boost the cognitive functioning

Superfoods For Supper

Rushed as dinner can be for most families, it’s also critical for “smart” eating. It’s usually the only meal where children get to see adults eating - and enjoying a variety of different brain foods.

Beef

Iron deficiency is the most common type of nutritional shortfall. Poor performance at school could be a symptom. Lean beef is one of the best absorbed sources of iron there is. How to serve it: You already know they love burgers and steak. Have them help you make healthy beef kebabs and homemade burgers with lean mince meat on the grill, or pick out their favorite vegetables to toss into a stir-fry.

Fish

Naturally fatty fish are a good source of vitamin D and omega-3s, which protect the brain against cognitive decline and memory loss. Salmon, tuna, trout and sardines are all rich in omega-3s. The more omega-3s we can get to the brain, the better it will function and the better kids will be able to focus. How to serve it: Grill it, roast it, or add it to a salad or sandwich.

Rugga Kids understands that loving the game of rugby means enjoying the time spent with friends and family by playing and being healthy. Rugga Kids is proud to have a showcase of students that excels in the game up to provincial level. Enjoying each time they set foot on the rugby field and doing so safely. Ensure that your child gets the benefit of enjoying rugby while learning important developmental skills and how to be safe while playing sports. Many injuries which occur in the adult game could easily be avoided through a proper grounding and education on how to play the game safely. Rugga Kids acknowledges this, and places huge emphasis on teaching safety in rugby and sports in general. In fact our motto is: “ Rugga Kids - safe and healthy’. Our objective is to develop rugby in all communities and cultures, maintaining a gender fair approach. We strive to develop motor-skills and safety techniques, which form the base for all future rugby players. Our primary goal is the holistic development of the learner within the rugby milieu. We encourage the learner to develop a passion for the game and a healthy respect for the safety and human dignity of all participants. The human brain achieves 80% of its growth within the first five years of life. It is vital to instil as many motor-skill milestones during this time, and further develop these basic skills through physical activity. Ball play is a vital part of the Rugga Kids programme. Through this we help with the development of sequencing patterns, vital to a child’s coordination and advancement.

Wie is Die Witjassies / Little Lab Coats?

D

ie Witjassies / Little Lab Coats bied wetenskap klasse vir kinders tussen 3 - 12 jaar aan wat ontwikkel is om die vak sinvol by klein kinders tuis te bring. Die lesse dek beginsels vanuit ‘n verskeidenheid wetenskapsdissiplines, insluitend chemie, geografie, fisika, geologie, paleontologie, meteorologie en biologie.

What is our mission? To provide exciting, high quality, out-of-the-box science classes to young children. Stories and pictures to colour are included in each lesson, because we want to develop science into something understandable, attainable and FUN for all children!

How do the classes work? The children experiment with real, safe, tried-andtested scientific apparatus, which we believe contributes to the total value acquired by attendees of our classes.

Their self-confidence grows vastly when they get to strut around in white lab coats and do experiments with scientific apparatus just like REAL scientists!

The experiment is discussed from the title right down to the conclusion, introducing children to the scientific method. This type of presentation also prepares learners for the kind of layout required in Science Expo projects.

Wat beteken dit vir ‘n kind om ‘n Witjassie te wees?

The multi-faceted nature of this type of communication serves children from all backgrounds, aptitudes and preferences and thus no child is left behind. Safety takes top priority in our classes. We work with safe apparatus and reagents. From the word go the learner is taught laboratory rules that will apply for the rest of his/her life. For this reason, we have a standing rule that NOTHING we work with is ever to be tasted, no matter how familiar it looks.

What does a class entail? • • • •

Runs weekly for approximately half an hour. Classes are presented in Afrikaans and/or English. Age appropriate group with small classes. At the end of the lesson, class notes may be sent home either with the tangible result of the day’s experiments, or with suggestions for a new experiment to be done at home. Colouring pictures pertaining to a term’s lessons will be sent home just prior to school holidays, when all the content has been revised during the last lesson.

• • • • • •

At the end of the year, each Little Lab Coat will receive a Certificate of Participation to certify that they completed the program.

Horisonne verbreed. Selfvertroue kry ‘n hupstoot.

How can our school participate in Die Witjassies & Little Lab Coats program? We are currently involved at various schools in and

around White River, Nelspruit and Ngodwana, and looking to expand further in the Lowveld. If you would like Die Witjassies / Little Lab Coats to get involved with the teaching and development of science at your school, contact us for a free demonstration. Die Witjassies bied nou ook pret kinderpartytjies aan met ‘n wetenskap tema – how about a MAD SCIENTIST birthday party with lots of fun and crazy experiments?!

HELP! MY BABY IS TEETHING!

W

hen your baby is about four months old, a lot of brain and physical development is taking place. You might find that your baby is a little fussier, there is a change in the nappies and your baby’s feeding habits are changing.Very often teething is to blame for all these changes and the extra fussiness, but is it just teething and can we, by treating the teething problems have a happier, calmer baby?

Common myths about teething Teething causes fever Teething babies get diarrhea Teething infants have nappy rash Teething kids pull on their ears Teething causes a stuffy nose I must admit, I have two children and some of the above shocked me too. It is just so easy to blame your baby or toddler’s difficulties on teething. And what can I blame it on now? But what causes the above symptoms that are so common amongst teething babies? Between 4 and 9 months a baby’s eye-sight starts improving and they also become more skilled in grasping objects. And because teething is painful (that is unfortunately not part of the myth – it is indeed very painful) babies put anything in their mouths, they chew on everything. These objects are often covered in germs. And do you know what germs do? They cause infection that causes fever, they cause diarrhea, they weaken the digestive tract that might cause nappy rash, they cause ear infection and infection in the nasal cavities. So, what can I do to solve this germ problem and these infections?

Keep your baby’s immediate area clean (please not sterile!). Wash baby’s toys with warm water and soap and also make sure that the area that your baby plays in is clean. Babies need to be exposed to some germs in order for them to build an immune system, so please do not disinfect your whole house! Regular massage improves your baby’s immune system. In BabyGym we do a very a thorough massage that is specifically aimed at improving your baby’s immune system and developing their brain. This massage also improves digestion and helps to clear a stuffy nose.

solution rapidly relieves big aches on small gums. Simply drop the onto your clean fingertip and rub gently onto the painful gums.

To relieve the pain, a good mouth massage with Prodol can be a good start. Before you start giving medication, consult your pharmacist, nurse or doctor. There are some traditional remedies that can actually increase your baby’s discomfort and some remedies are even harmful. If your baby refuses to feed, it is possible to feed using your baby’s instinct. In week three of BabyGym 2 we do a thorough feeding massage that will definitely improve your baby’s feeding during the painful teething stage. This massage can even reduce the occurrence of biting during feedings. Sources: De Jager, M 2004. BabyGym. Kaapstad; Human en Rousseau De Jager, M 2011. Brain development MILESTONES and learning. HAPPY BABY - HAPPY MOM Beware the poo-mageddon.

I

t can strike at any time, but is most likely when you are on a fancy outing with your friends who don’t have kids. It is neither season nor time specific and, tragically, there are little to no warning signs or alarms. The fallout from a poo-mageddon can be farreaching and all-encompassing: social humiliation, traumatic flashbacks to graphic images of human waste, and victims left questioning their parenting capabilities. It can leave previously secure family relationships in tatters as parents try to assign blame to one other: “Who forgot to put baby wipes in the nappy bag?” Some of the worst affected casualties have been known to walk around in public, soiled in baby faeces.

So how can you limit the repercussions of a poo-mageddon? Firstly, it’s important to have a detailed poo-mageddon survival plan in place. Discuss and share it with your partner, your babysitter and your neighbour’s dog. When out and about, always know the most direct route to your nearest nappy-changing facilities in case disaster strikes. Make sure your poo-mageddon survival kit (AKA nappy bag) is well stocked with critical supplies at all times. When a poo-mageddon strikes, it’s vitally important to remember and follow your A, B, C.

A is for ASSESS 1) Location. Where are you? Is it safe to proceed with a nappy-change, and if not, can you move the baby to a change table or parent room? Move any expensive or treasured items of clothing or possessions away from the disaster zone to protect them from further damage. Consider moving other children, the elderly and animals away from the danger as soon as possible.

2) Call for help. Who is around to help you? A ratio of one able-bodied, fit and determined adult per child’s limb is recommended. 3) Resources. Are there baby wipes and a clean nappy at hand? If not, what can you use instead? Is there a water source e.g. shower/sink available for douching? 4) Finally, assess the damage. How many layers of clothing have been penetrated? Has the poo erupted into the car seat/pram/your arm/leg/hip? Carefully remove and dispose of the soiled articles of clothing and set aside other affected items for cleaning later.

B is for BE PREPARED 1) Prepare your tools, resources and crisis response working area. Do you have enough wipes left in the packet? Is there a bin/nappy bag within arm’s reach? Are the flaps pulled out on the clean nappy? 2) Preparation is key in the aftermath of a poomageddon to prevent further collateral damage. Are you physically and mentally prepared to deal with the fallout of this crisis or is there someone else better equipped? 3) You are now ready to approach the epicentre of the crisis. Take some deep breaths and hold …

C is for CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN 1) Remove nappy. Try not to retch. Wipe, wipe, wipe like your life depends on it. You have a limited time window to get the clean-up done before baby is on the move sticking tiny fingers into the disaster area. Get into every crack and crevice and bin those wipes immediately so the little hands can’t get hold of them and put them in their little mouth. 2) Put on clean nappy. Breathe the clean air. Rejoice, the crisis is almost over. 3) No clean clothes on hand to replace the destroyed? That’s OK, you can be one of those parents who shun material needs and fashion-obsessed society. 4) Finally, beware of the aftershock. Sometimes a poo-nami can come crashing in after a poo-mageddon, especially when morale is low and resources are limited. 5) Most importantly, the mental and emotional trauma experienced by poo-mageddon survivors can scar for life. It’s important to seek help. Talk to other mothers who have been through similar tragedies ... and eventually you may even see the funny side. Maybe. (continued on next page)

FOR THAT GOOD GUT FEELING

CONTINUED Almost every baby will develop nappy rash at some time or another, so it’s important to know what causes nappy rash, what it looks like, how to treat it, and how to prevent it.

What does nappy rash look like?

Sick baby with caring mom: SYMPTOM GUIDE Is it serious? Find out fast 1) Infection. The nappy area is warm and moist - just the way bacteria and yeast like it. So it’s easy for a bacterial or yeast infection to flourish there and cause a rash, especially in the cracks and folds of your child’s skin.

If your child’s nappy area looks irritated and red, chances are it’s nappy rash. The skin may also be a little puffy and warm when you touch it. Nappy rash can be mild – a few prickly red spots in a small area – or extensive, with tender red bumps that spread to your child’s tummy and thighs.

2) Antibiotics. Children on antibiotics (or whose breastfeeding mothers are on antibiotics) sometimes get yeast infections because these drugs reduce the number of healthy bacteria that help keep yeast in check as well as the harmful bacteria they’re meant to destroy. Antibiotics can also cause diarrhea, which can contribute to nappy rash.

Nappy rash doesn’t mark you as a negligent parent. Dealing with nappy rash is part and parcel of childcare, especially in the first year or so of your child’s life.

What’s the best way to treat nappy rash?

How did my child get nappy rash? Nappy rash can be caused by anything from a new food to your child’s own urine. Here are the most likely culprits: 1) Wetness. Even the most absorbent nappy leaves some moisture on your child’s skin. And when your child’s urine mixes with bacteria from his stool, it breaks down and forms ammonia, which can be very harsh. That’s why children with frequent bowel movements or diarrhea are more prone to nappy rash. Although a child left in a dirty nappy for too long is more likely to develop nappy rash, any child with sensitive skin can get a rash, even if his parents are diligent nappy changers. 2) Chafing or chemical sensitivity. Your child’s nappy rash may be the result of his nappy rubbing against his skin, especially if he’s particularly sensitive to chemicals like the fragrances in a disposable nappy or the detergents used to wash a cloth nappy. It could also be that a lotion or powder you’re using at nappy time doesn’t agree with your child’s skin. 3) New foods. It’s common for children to get nappy rash when they start eating solid foods or are introduced to a new food. Any new food changes the composition of the stool. (The acids in certain foods, such as strawberries and fruit juices, can be especially troublesome for some kids.) A new food might increase the frequency of your child’s bowel movements as well. If you’re breastfeeding, your child’s skin could even be reacting to something you’re eating.

Take these steps to heal your child’s skin when you see a nappy rash: 1) Keep your child clean and dry by changing his nappy frequently. That may mean getting him up at night for a nappy change 2) Rinse his nappy area well at each nappy change. Don’t use wipes that contain alcohol or fragrance. Some parents keep cotton balls and a squirt bottle or an insulated container of warm water at the changing table for easy, gentle cleanups. 3) Pat your child’s skin dry - don’t rub! 4) Use an ointment that forms a protective barrier on the skin after every nappy change to help protect your child’s irritated skin from stool and urine. There are several good barrier ointments on the market, including petroleum ointment or petroleum jelly, nonpetroleum jelly, lanolin products, and white zinc oxide. 5) Put your child’s nappy on loosely or use a nappy that’s a little big on him to allow for better air circulation. If you buy disposables, try a different brand to see if that helps. There are varieties for sensitive skin, for example, and extra-absorbent options will pull more moisture away from your child’s skin. 6) When the weather is warm and your child can play outside or in a room with a floor that’s easy to clean, leave his nappy (and ointment) off for as long as possible every day. Exposure to the air will speed healing. 7) Consider letting your child sleep with a bare bottom whenever he has a rash. A plastic sheet under the cloth one will help protect the mattress. Pour the SPAR flavoured water into the ice lollie moulds and freeze for about 4 hours. 4. Once frozen, take your ice lollie mould out of the freezer and let them sit at room temperature for about three minutes to ensure they will come out in one piece. We found that this little thawing trick helps to pull them out without breaking. When we tried pulling them out right after taking them out of the freezer, they broke in half. You can also run warm water over an individual ice lollie mould to help it thaw faster. Even if your ice lollie does break off a bit inside the mould, I can assure you that they still taste deliciously sweet and refreshing.

his year it was Nelspruit Primary’s turn to host this fantastic day and they surely stood up to the challenge and hosted a great event at Bergvlam High School sporting grounds. The grandstand was packed with supporters from all seven local primary schools chearing on their teams with ear-piercing war chants and colourful banners. Parents lined up to watch their little ones compete in both track and field events. For some it was their first taste of competition while the older competitors visibly had something to prove. Recognition was given to the boys and girls who performed exceptionally well during the day with Nthando Ngobe (u/7) of Nelspruit Primary and Sethu Mathebula (u/7) of Nelspruit Primary being awarded Junior Victor and Victrix Ludorum respectively.

Hospitality, balance, health, fun, achievements and good comaraderie was the qualities that stood out on the day.

A big thank you to all the cheerleaders, coaches, officials and athletes for all their hard work.

medalist after completing the race in an astonishing 27,9 seconds. From Laerskool Nelspruit the athlete who stood out head and shoulders above the rest was Rhode Nel. She won the 150m and 75m hurdles as well as the 150m race. She also earned a silver medal in the 100m. Mr. Arrie Henn from Laerskool Nelspruit thought words cannot do athleticism justice. It is poetry in motion. This is exactly what he experienced at Inter-Primary 2015. Mr. Robert Naudé from Laerskool Barberton said: “The award for the best achievement according to me was Bandile Mabuza with his first place in the long jump and second place in the 100m. He also came third in the high jump and he took part in the relay where they got the silver medal.” Laerskool Barberton’s principal wished Mr. Wynand Viljoen from Nelspruit Primary and all his collegues a big congratulations with this years successful inter-primary athletics meet.

Although the meeting was, as always competitive among the schools, the organizers promoted good sportsmanship and fun rather than expectation.

It is fantastic to see all the schools come together at one event to compete in a sport that lies close to everyones hearts.

Headmasters from all participating schools extended their thanks and appreciation to their hosts for a wonderful day.

Athletics is the one sport that promotes mass participations in students. Children, parents and teaches enjoyed this event to the fullest and it was a great priviledge to see the athletes achievements.

Kyla Labuschagne is one of the pupils of Laerskool Bergland that stood out as she beat the previous 200m herdles record with a time of 32,86 seconds. She also earned a silver medal in the 75m herdles. In the 200m she took her position as the gold

Laerskool Barberton says they are truly looking forward to next years event that will be hosted by Laerskool Nelspruit on Friday 19th of February 2016. Article written and photography by Mom’s Notes

T

he intangible magic of travelling on an aircraft manifests itself through the twinkle in their excited wide eyes and it dances out wildly through their infectious laugh – “we’re going on a big airplane, and we’re even going to sleep on it!” The thrill of takeoff and the surreal feeling soaring above the clouds is somewhat lost on us as parents when we travel with our little bundles of energy. Airports are stressful environments, for even the most experienced travelers, so throwing in a couple of kids can be overwhelming. ‘I’ll relax once we’re onboard’ you might think, well, think again! You can probably expect an argument about who will sit at the window, you’re bound to spend time jumping up and down to dig into the overhead locker bags, you’ll try and figure out how the entrainment system works and you will be making up the answers to a million different questions. Drawing on our own experience, we’ve put together a little list to help you take the edge off long-distance air travel.

Prepare your children for the airport experience.

Take time to sit down with them a few days before you head off and tell them about what they can expect. Prepare them in advance that the airport is a very busy place – so they need to stay very close to you at all times. Make rules, like if you are busy talking to the airline people, or immigration officer, and you can’t hold their hand, then they must hold onto you until you can pay attention to them again. Remind them about ‘Stranger Danger’ and practice with them what they should do if someone tries to talk to them.

Kill two birds with one stone.

Air travel really equated to a ‘hurry up and wait’ scenario, which means boredom, which means chaos with kids! Each child 2 years and older is allowed the same hand baggage regulation as adults (i.e. 7kg). Involve your children in packing their own hand luggage. Get them to chose a fun backpack, and help them to select some things to pack for their time at the airport and on the aircraft. Don’t pack valuable items to avoid disappointment if these get lost or stolen, a story book, a drawing or reading book with pencils, and a favorite toy or two should do the trick. Even the youngest of children can be given a project for the trip, purchase a disposable camera and have them take pictures, or older children can keep a diary. Having them pack their own hand luggage will make them feel important, independent and take care of some of the bored moments too.

Plan every detail well in advance.

Airlines are generally sensitive to families with young children. If you are a single parent travelling with very young children, ask your travel agent to request assistance in advance for you. Airlines will then dedicate a ground staff member to help you at the airport.Your travel agent can book baby & child meals, this means that your children will get their meals before anyone else, which means they can settle down and catch some onboard entertainment before drifting off to sleep. Book your baby cradles (bassinets) & seats ahead of time, even if it means paying extra for this service. You do not want to end-up scattered all over the cabin! Have you checked your passports? Children’s passports are only valid for five-years, generally most countries want a six-month validity after exiting that country. Do you have an Unabridged Birth Certificate for each child? If you don’t – get to Home Affairs immediately because in June 2015 it will become legislation to travel with one of these documents for each child, and Home Affairs can take months to issue them. If you are not travelling with your own children, or if only one parent is travelling with their child – have you got an official letter from

the other parent(s) to travel with the child? If not, get one today. It’s not always needed, but it’s better to be prepared. An affidavit is an indisputable document - get one today. If you have a particularly energetic child, visit your doctor to discuss medication that can help calm them down a notch and get you through the airport, never give them over-thecounter medicine. A visit to your pharmacist is always a good idea, have him/her put together a first-aid & medical kit for your journey – a few good ointments, broad spectrum anti-biotic, motion sickness meds, something for nausea, a runny tummy, pain-killers, antihistamines and a few others should take care of all the basics.

On the day.

Get to the airport well in time, even if you have used the airline’s 24-hour on-line check-in facility. It’s never a bad idea being too early! Do your kids know your cell number? They should - just in case they wander off when your head it turned. If they are too young to memorize it, then write your number on their arm, or on a sticker and put it on their shirt. After check-in and passing immigration, locate your boarding gate immediately & settle there until the flight starts boarding. Make this your ‘airport base camp’. When the flight starts boarding, take advantage of the priority boarding procedures for parents with children. This means you aren’t juggling the luggage and children while other passengers are trying to board and you have some time to get settled and relax. If you’re using a small folding pushchair you can take it right to the door of the aircraft at most airports. Travel is exciting, and it’s often a rare privilege, but planning and preparing is key to making it all you dreamed it would be. The best stories are often found between the pages of a passport... so what’s stopping you?

Simple plumbing tips & tricks that turns any mom into a

H andy M andy! How to find a water leak in or around your house In most cases the water line running to your home is “metered” for accountability and billing purposes. A leak on your line can be very costly. Yet, even a very small leak can be found through trying a few simple techniques and can save you from a nasty surprise from your local utility company. If you suspect that you have a leak, here are a few steps you can do before calling a plumber. The more you do, the less it will cost you in the long run! If there are NO leaks at your toilets or taps, check the line running from the meter to the house. While this may sound difficult, you can save money if you can locate the leak for the plumber.

We are your professional local home cleaning service and pledge to clean thoroughly, completely and reliably. Our Services: • Daily / Weekly / Monthly Maid Cleaning Service • Pre-occupational Cleaning • Post Occupational Cleaning • Rental Home Cleaning & Maid Service • Vacant Holiday Home Cleaning • Spring Cleaning

Benefits: • •

If you know you have a shut-off valve by the house, shut it off temporarily and check the meter by removing the lid and watching the dial on top of the meter.

If you can’t see the meter head, try digging around because they sometimes have dirt or grass covering the top of them. Once you locate it and the valve is turned off by the house, watch the meter to see if is turning. If it is still turning, then the leak is between the meter and the house. That is, unless you have a leaking valve, and this very common with these older bronze gate valves. Then, your leak may also be inside the house.

• •

We do more in an hour than a single domestic worker can do in a day with our team. We provide all our own cleaning products and equipment Cost effective- no need to buy additional cleaning products. We do not need to be fed at work- savings on coffee, tea, sugar and bread No more bus fare No more labour issues

To learn more about HOUSEKEEPING MAID EASI, please visit our website. When you are ready to begin a service, call us directly or submit your request online by filling out the quotation form online.

At this point, walk the area between the meter and the shut-off valve. Look for signs of a leak such as: soft muddy areas, grass that is greener than the rest or growing much faster than other areas. If you see such an obvious sign, call Swift Group to do repairs. If no leak is found, also phone Swift Group to use there water leak detector to find the leak.
