MIND MATTERS
SPOILING YOUR CHILDREN
Most people would agree that it is not a good idea to over-indulge our children. A child can end up believing that a constant stream of presents is the most reliable way of showing love or feeling valued. If this happens, they will lose the ability to draw a distinction between affection, money and gifts. They may not be interested in anyone who turns up without bringing them a present. By focusing on the material value of an object that they’re given, a child may struggle to understand the symbolic value of a gift and the importance of the act of giving. Just because they want new things constantly, doesn’t mean that they will be better off or more entertained with the more things they have. It works quite the opposite. The more they have, the less they are interested in any one thing. It becomes overwhelming for them to take care of so much stuff, so they may not pick up after themselves. A lot of their possessions may become destroyed through neglect. Children will only take presents for granted if we continually smother them with gifts, the majority of which they won’t pay much attention to, or if we allow them to think that they have the right to get presents at any time. Instead, it’s important to give them time to express the things they would like, without these wishes being fulfilled immediately. This is how they learn to dream, to imagine themselves in the future, to mark out the moment that their desires are satisfied and not to have a tantrum when they don’t get what they want. It’s this that teaches children that they are not all-powerful – something that young children believe – and allows them to become adults. This is a part of a greater learning process that takes place every day. Your primary job as a parent is to prepare your child for how the world really works. In the real world, you don’t always get what you want. You will be better able to deal with that as an adult if you’ve experienced it as a child. If your parent-child relationship is based on material goods, your child won’t have the chance to experience
8
unconditional love. Redefine what taking care of your children means.
Are you providing for them emotionally and spiritually? You don’t have to buy them material goods in order to create a bond. Instead of tangible gifts, how about spending some time together? Be careful that you aren’t teaching them that emotions can be healed by a trip to the mall. Don’t let your guilt get in the way of your parenting. Your job as a parent is not to make yourself feel good by giving the child everything that makes you feel good when you give it.Your job as a parent is to prepare your child to succeed in school and when they get out into the world. Kids have to be socialized in a way that they understand you work hard for what you get.You don’t want to teach your child that they will get everything through manipulation, whining, crying, door slamming and guilt induction. Make sure your children aren’t defining their happiness and their status in the world as a function of what they wear or drive. Sit down with them and have a one-on-one conversation about what really defines their worth: their caring, their giving, their work ethic, etc. If you spend equal time sitting down and talking to them about what really mattered, they will soon learn that it is not what you see that counts, but how your heart is, how you treat others, that is more important. Understand “intrinsic” versus “extrinsic” motivation. Intrinsic motivation is when people do things because they feel proud of themselves when they do it. They feel a sense of accomplishment and achievement. Extrinsic motivation is when someone does something because of external motivation. For example, they will receive money, a toy or privilege if they do the task. If you are always rewarding your child with material things, he/she will never learn how to motivate themselves with internal rewards like pride. They also will never learn to value things because there are so many things and nothing is special. Make sure your child understands the value of hard work. If your child idolizes a celebrity, ask him/her why. What is it your child is looking up to? Is it maybe because the person drive a nice car, lives in a beautiful house, wear nice clothes, or is it because that person is an inspiration to your child, because that person works hard, is caring, speak his or her mind about their religion, unconditionally what others may think.

Liv’ In proudly announces the
By not teaching our children to look after their own, and family member’s possessions, we are spoiling them. Children can have toys or other items taken away for a reasonable time, when they are rough with these things, in order to instil carefulness. They also need to learn, from our example, that there is a place for everything, and everything goes in its place, so that chaos is avoided. By not fostering independent play, or not allowing our youngsters to solve problems and create their own inventions and constructions, we are letting our children down. Providing simple things like drawing implements, sand, play-dough, water, blocks and boxes, will promote these highly important pursuits.
Be a good role model. We’re not the only influence in our kids’ lives, so we better be the best influence!

On a chilly June morning last year, Riverside Park hosted its 2nd successful charity road race, Take a Step for Children. The choice of date, 16 June National Youth Day, for Take a Step for Children was no coincidence as all funds raised were donated to different children’s charities in and around Nelspruit including Nelspruit Child Welfare, AutoTec Foundation and Nelspruit Community Forum. The event, which will take place again this year in June, consists of an official, fundraising 10km road race – for serious athletes – as well as a 3km Fun Run/Walk for the not-so-serious!
Close on 600 runners and walkers joined in the fundraising initiative and arrived at the starting point at the Boulevard Entrance of Riverside Mall. The MPowerFM Thunder Truck created a carnavalesque atmosphere, playing the rhythm of Mpumalanga to get everyone in the mood. Harry the Heart, Rivo the Lion, Andre the balloon sculpting clown, students

from the Nelspruit Gymnastics Academy, a couple of fun clowns and the very talented hip-hop dancers from Khutsalani School kept the crowds entertained. A number of strong Puma players also attended and joined the Fun Run/Walk. The day – professionally run by the Lowveld Canoe Club – was a great success and would not have been possible without the generosity of several sponsors MPowerFM, Coca-Cola and Lowvelder as well as the many businesses that participated in the on-air Business Challenge on MPowerFM. Riverside Park is a place of vibrance and leisure where you can, literally, do everything in one day … whether it’s going bowling, stocking up on groceries, taking in a movie, visiting the water park, doing some retail therapy, having your vehicle serviced or trying your hand with Lady Luck at the black-jack tables.
Diarise to be part of the fun with Take a Step for Children on Saturday, 15 June 2013.

THE TRUE STORY Every day, children are diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. Help is often available at specialized
government hospitals, but for many children and their families the treatment they so desperately need is out of reach because the cost of transport to these facilities is simply not affordable. Where the treatment required is not available locally, we arrange and sponsor flight or bus tickets to a suitable medical facility.
ABOUT WINGS & WISHES Wings & Wishes was established in 2006 after a group of employees from Coca-Cola Sabco (Pty) Ltd identified the need in their community and started donating their frequent flyer miles as part of an internal Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The miles were committed to facilitating the transport of critically ill children and an accompanying adult to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, or an alternative appropriate medical facility, for treatment. The program is now a registered project under The Coca-Cola Sabco Community Foundation (IT 60/2007) and is run primarily by employee volunteers. The program is funded entirely through donations and is supported by many individuals and organizations in South Africa. As word of the program spreads, requests for flights and bus tickets are a daily occurrence and we are now assisting at least one child a day.

Purpose, Vision and Values
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Core Purpose:
Money Your donation of funds towards flight costs and essential provisions will make a significant difference in the lives of these children and their families. Funds raised are also used to provide alternative transport methods should a flight not be a suitable option.
Dedicated to transporting critically ill children to receive lifesaving medical treatment.
Vision:
Transport should never be a barrier for a child to reach lifesaving treatment, wherever they live.
Core Values:
Compassion, Minimal bureaucracy, Integrity We undertake to provide compassionate support immediately, with minimal bureaucracy, whilst maintaining the highest levels of integrity for the children and their families.
Criteria:
We assist children who do not have access to the required specialised medical treatment in their home towns and whose families would not otherwise be able to afford the transport to get them to a suitable medical facility. We also require written motivation from a medical practitioner explaining that the treatment required is not available at a local institution.
Children supported to date since 2006
1588 Flights sponsored to date since 2006
2840 Bus trips sponsored to date since 2006
339
Miles Your donation of frequent flyer air miles, in amounts of 20 000 or 30 000, will be used to purchase air tickets. Mercy We provide basic essentials for the children whilst in hospital. These Mercy Packs contain pyjama’s, soft toys, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, colouring in books and pencils, and any other comfort items to make their stay in hospital more bearable. Donations towards the Mercy Packs are gratefully received. Pledge a flight As flights are requested, the bookings are made, and the cost of the flight is invoiced to the individual or company who pledged the flight. Average cost of a flight is approximately R1300.

HEALTH NOTES
Prevention - the best cure
Smart Tips Eating tips
• • •
• • •
• •
•
Eat fresh fruit and vegetables each day (at least five portions). Choose a variety of fruit and vegetables of different colours for different nutrients. Eat more fibre, e.g. fruit and vegetables with skins included and whole-grain foods such as Bokomo Weet-Bix and Bokomo Oats (both CANSA Smart Choices) mealie pap, brown rice and sorghum. Limit meat and rather eat more fish, beans, lentils and soya products. Avoid food that is fatty, sugary and salty such as chips, potato crisps, sweets and fast foods. Limit your intake of processed, cured and smoked foods such as biltong, bacon, polony, ham, russians and vienna sausages (linked to colon cancer). Choose low-fat milk and hormone-free dairy products (e.g. Fair Cape Free Range Rooibos Yoghurt – a CANSA Smart Choice). Use Canola oil with a high smoke point of 230oC in all food preparation. It is rich in Omega-3 and has the best ratio (2:1) of Omega-6 to Omega-3. Be Well and Continental Canola Oil are also CANSA Smart Choices. Choose Canola margarine products (Blossom Canola Margarine is a CANSA Smart Choice), also with the best ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 and it is trans fat free.
• •
Check labels of processed foods like confectionaries for trans fat contents (trans fats are restricted to less than 2% by law). Aim for three meals per day and snack in between meals on your favourite fruit or vegetable.
Cooking tips
• •
•
•
Eat raw fruit and vegetables daily. Prepare your food by baking or steaming using a Russell Hobbs steamer (a CANSA Smart Choice). Cut down on frying and braaing. Cooking oil should not be re-used. If you braai, limit this to twice a week, cut off excess fat, keep the grill 12cm above the coals. Never eat burnt meat (linked to colon cancer). Consider braaing in foil. Store food with care - use clingwrap free of harmful plasticisers, e.g. in-house products of Checkers, Pick n Pay, Shoprite and Spar as well as the brand name product, GLAD Wrap (a CANSA Smart Choice).
Drinking tips •
•
• • •
Drink 30ml of liquid per kg of body weight per day, 60% of which should be water. Drinking enough water not only keeps you hydrated, it also helps food move through the digestive system and carries nutrients to the cells. Alcohol (like tobacco) is linked to an increased risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, voice box, oesophagus, liver, breast, prostate, colon and rectum. Limit alcohol to one standard drink a day. Avoid fizzy sweetened drinks. If you have fruit juice, drink unsweetened pure juice and dilute with water. Drink rooibos tea, which is rich in antioxidants, low in tannin and caffeine free.

HEALTH NOTES
A balanced snack of protein, starch and fruit or vegetable will assist in their concentration and energy level balance during the school day. Don’t forget to include a bottle or flask with water, to keep them hydrated. Remember that whole fruits are better choices than juice, as they will release energy slower.
Ideas of healthy combos: • Mixed nuts, grapes, multigrain rusk Below are three lists- low fat protein, low GI starches and fruits and vegetables. Parents can choose a food from each food group that their children will like. This ensures a food from each group is represented, helps to keep snack time from becoming monotonous and diversifies their diet.

HEALTH NOTES
PLAN A
Healthy
kids Birthday partY Top tips for a healthy birthday party A birthday celebration that leaves kids on a natural high (not a sugar high!) is possible with these practical healthy smart party tips. All children love birthday parties, which is hardly surprising considering they can eat as many sweets and treats as they like! But the after-effects aren’t so much fun – sugar rushes, overeating and belly aches. Many parents would love to take most typical party foods off the menu to avoid the ‘post-party meltdown’. These 10 tips offer solutions that should keep both parents and children happy.
1. Balance is the key
Many typical party foods are high in refined sugars, these foods do not fill children up and since many children cannot regulate themselves, they will just keep eating sweets until they are sick. The key is to combine some protein with these sugary foods to slow down the absorption, making children feel fuller for longer and eat less. Proteins that work good on parties are milk, low-fat homemade custard, low-fat yoghurt and cheese.
2. In a good order
Don’t bring all the food for the entire party out at once. First, bring out water, fruit kebabs and bite-sized finger wholegrain/ whole wheat sandwiches with different fillings such as cheese, marmite, peanut butter, chicken or cooked ham. These snacks will keep kids feeling full so they have less chance of filling up on the sugary foods that come later.
3. Portion control
Some children are good at knowing how much to eat, but most children will consume too much. A great way to avoid this is by putting together individual themed party packs. Fill each pack with a selection of foods that balance out the sugar. This lets you regulate how many lollies or chips each child has, nobody misses out. But above all, children love the surprise of unwrapping their own treats and choosing what they eat.
20
Some ideas: • Safari Dried fruit and nuts • Small Yoghurts • Cheese portions • Pretzels • Crackers • Popcorn • Cereal bars • Fresh fruit
4. Birthday cake
For a slightly different cake, try making cupcakes or, better still, mini banana or blueberry muffins. Insert a bamboo skewer (remove the spiked tip) into each one and then push a plastic colour straw over the skewer to make it look pretty. Put a piece of Styrofoam in a flowerpot and arrange the cakes or muffins in it. Dress up the pot so it looks like a bunch of flowers for a girl or decorate the muffins for boys. A small amount of icing can make them look exciting. Try to make a healthier icing with milk, low fat margarine and icing sugar try to avoid the colourings.
5. Kids who lunch
If you’re including lunch it is important to offer some savoury treats. Ideas that would suit both children and parents are: • Mini pizzas and mini hotdogs • Lean sausages wrapped in bread • Hummus, cottage cheese or avocado dip with pita bread or veggies • Variety of small quiches • Baked potato wedges with a low fat mayo dip • Chicken drumsticks or chicken strips with a dip
6. Drink it up
Children love water, especially if they have been running around playing party games. Sweet drinks such as cordial, juice and soft drinks will actually make them thirstier. They need water to hydrate themselves. The trick is to make water fit in with the party theme. You can buy brightly coloured plastic ice cubes to put in each cup and use coloured or themed cups, bendy straws or mini umbrellas – make water look fun and they will drink loads of it.
7. Fabulous fruit
Some kids will happily gravitate to the fruit platter as their first preference; however the average child will choose the sweets. The key is to make fruit look fabulous. Make kebabs by chopping up different fruits such as strawberries, bananas, Clementine segments, kiwifruit and melon, then threading them onto wooden skewers, you can also leave this for the kids to do themselves.
Give one or two small marshmallows to thread in between. You can also layer freshly chopped fruit with low-fat custard and jelly to make individual trifles. Choc-dipped fruit is another fun option for slightly older children
8. Sugar-free games
PiĂąatas pass the parcel and treasure hunts are popular party games, but they often involve sugary treats. To get around this without spoiling the fun, fill the piĂąata with inexpensive miniature party toys and stickers, put a whistle between the layers for pass the parcel and hunt for items such as bubble blowers or small bouncy balls rather than chocolates and lollipops.
9. Goodie bags
Take-home goodie bags barely make it to their destination if they’re given to the children, so hand them to their mum or dad instead. Fill the bag with pencils, rubbers, stickers, toy cars, temporary tattoos, stamps, plastic jewellery and only add a few small edible treats.
10. Going natural
We tend to embrace products claiming to be ‘natural’, believing they are better and healthier for our kids. Generally, ‘natural’ means the product has no artificial colours and flavours making it a better choice. BUT don’t forget that ‘natural’ lollies are still loaded with sugar.
ENJOY YOUR KIDS PARTY!

STROOPSOET koeksusters
Nou deel ek my familie-geheim met jou. My resep is so maklik - trek die kinders nader en probeer self.
11. Sny nou die deeg met ‘n pizza rolmes in reghoekige blokkies, sny drie “bene” in elke reghoek in.Vleg! 12.
22
Stroop 1 L Water 1kg Suiker 500g Bruin Suiker 1 eetlepel Kremetart 80ml Suurlemoensap 2 Kaneelstokkies
Deeg 500g Koekmeel 30ml Bakpoeier 30ml Botter 1 Eier 250ml Water

Dit help nie veel dat “it’s my party (and I’ll cry if I want to)” agter jou op Radio Laeveld speel nie.
“...a horse walks in to a bar. The barman says: Why the long face? Horse replies: ”beef gets all the credit.” of “...a horse walks in to a bar. The barman says: Sorry, too late. We joke about the Pope now...”

Rapunzel maak ‘n spesiale verjaarsdag versoek. Haar stiefma druk haar kneukeldun, langnael vinger onder haar neus en sê met veragting: “ I distintictly remember, it was your birthday last year!” Baba nommer drie? Aai, Ouma was darem daar en boeta maak namens hom geskenke oop; terwyl hy soos ‘n wafferse kenner sê: “Ag Ma-m-ma, die papier is die lekkerste deel. Gee, laat ek die batterye insit…”

Só word ons kinders tóg groot. Stel jou die idilliese toneel voor. Een gazebo. Check. Laeveldse berge en dale. Check. Liters en liters koeldrank. Check. “I can distinctly remember it was your birthday last year. ” … en dit was great!!

mina moe
As Kaap toe vlieg met jou kroos dalk ‘n bietjie veel gevra is, is daar goeie nuus.
36
Reinette en Peruda se poppeteater groep, Things on Strings, bied top-gehalte produksies vir Laeveld gehore!
Wat doen Things on Strings? Poppeteater is ideaal vir kinderpartytjies, opvoedkundige programme, fondsinsamelingsen gemeenskapsprojekte. Things on Strings se produksies is uniek en vol pret. Things on Strings is ook betrokke by gemeenskapsprojekte soos, You are Precious, gebaseer of Max Lucado se boek “You are Special” wat ‘n boodskap van God se genade oordra.
Hierdie interaktiewe kunsvorm vol geskiedenis, lewe en immergroen toekoms is iets waaroor Things on Strings passievol is.

egg fun
busy hands
Eggs are not only healthy and make for fuss-free lunch ideas look to eggs for great craft ideas too. Get cracking with eggs!
Mom, you can drain the eggs before dyeing to keep them as craft projects, or you can keep them hard-boiled and ready for lunch-box eating. Top Tip: Line the area you are working with well with newspaper. The newspaper makes for an easy cleanup as you can simply roll it up and place it in the compost bin when you’re finished. Let’s start colouring easter eggs! Basic Egg Dyeing recipe: 1 cup of hot water to 1 tsp white vinegar in a heat resistant cup or jar deep enough to submerge an egg in. Place enough food colour to achieve your desired colour.
If you want the more eco-friendly option to create your own natural food colouring, simply use the following: Red Dye 2 beets, 2 cups of water and 1 tablespoon distilled vinegar. Bring beets and water to boil. Simmer at low heat for 15 minutes. Cool and strain and add vinegar. Blue Dye 1 package frozen or fresh blueberries and 2 cups of water. Bring blueberries and water to a boil. Crush berries with a fork. Lower heat and simmer 15 minutes. Cool and strain into a cheese cloth lined strainer. Very Light Yellow Dye 2 cups packed onion skins and 3 cups of water. Bring onion skins and water to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Cool and strain. (Note: you do not use vinegar when making the onion dye) Onion skins do not create much color but are fun to do. Golden Yellow Turmeric makes a good egg dye. Use 2 tablespoons of turmeric and follow above instructions. Be careful in handling turmeric as it stains easily. Protect your countertops and wash out your sink right away. Also, protect your hands otherwise they might turn a pretty shade of yellow too!

Other ways to decorate & embellish Masking with stickers: Place stickers on a plain or dyed egg that is thoroughly dry to make a pattern then submerge in a colour of you choice. When the dye has dried, peel away the stickers to reveal your design. Masking with rubber bands: Twist rubber bands of various thicknesses over your eggs in the same way you would with the stickers, this will yield a fun and easy to do striped egg effect. Masking with lace: Cut a piece of lace from an old tablecloth, curtain, or clothing and wrap your plain egg in it. Secure the end with a rubber band so it is tightly wound around the egg. Then dunk in dye, works best with blue or green dye. You can wrap the entire egg or just a band around the middle for a sash effect. Crayon: bring your eggs to room temperature; the crayon wax won’t stick well to a cold egg. The dye won’t stick to the crayon so you can let the kids draw all over the eggs and dip them in many colours for maximum effect. In the past this was done with only white crayons so it wouldn’t show through. This is no longer the case because you’re going to bake the wax off. After the eggs are thoroughly dried place them on a foil or parchment paper line cookie sheet in a 250oC oven, the wax will start to melt about ten minutes in, the wax will start to glisten and shine. Remove the eggs from the oven, hold them in a paper towel as you wipe off the wax.
These are some easy egg dyeing ideas that you can use in a pinch. Remember that kids should always be supervised when crafting. Have fun, be creative, and remember above all else it’s about the memories you’re making. Happy Easter!

wonderland • 97.25% of all water is found in oceans. • 2.05% of the earth’s water is locked up in the polar ice caps and glaciers. • Only 0.7% of water is found in a freshwater form in lakes, rivers, and groundwater. • As the Earth’s population grows and the demand for fresh water increases, water purification and recycling become increasingly important. • Nature – one of the most respected scientific journals in the world – reported recently that worldwide, wetlands are worth someover R30 trillion a year! • There are only 12 countries in the world that supply tap water that is fit to drink, and South Africa is one of them. Our tap water quality is third best overall in the world.

What are wetlands? Wetlands are difficult to define because of their great variation in size and location. The most important features of wetlands are: Waterlogged soils or soils covered with a shallow layer of water (permanently or seasonally), unique types of soil, and distinctive plants adapted to water-saturated soils. Marshes, bogs, swamps, vleis and sponges are examples of wetlands.
WHY ARE WETL ANDS IMPORTANT? Flood busters: Wetlands associated with streams and rivers slow floodwaters by acting as giant, shallow bowls. Water flowing into these bowls loses speed and spreads out. Plants in the wetland play an important role in holding back the water. The wetland acts as a sponge as much of the flood water is then stored in the wetland and is slowly released to downstream areas, instead of it all rushing to the sea within a few days. This greatly reduces flood damage, particularly erosion, and ensures a more steady supply of water throughout the year. Filters: Wetlands improve water quality as they are very good natural filters, trapping sediments, nutrients (e.g. nitrogen and phosphates), and even pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria. In addition, pollutants such as heavy metals (e.g. mercury, lead) and pesticides, may be trapped by chemical and biological processes. In other words, the water leaving the wetland is cleaner than the water entering it.
“There is clear water up to your ankles and a dragonfly zips past your head as you watch some ducks fly off the water - welcome to the soggy world of the wetland. Wetlands and wildlife: Wetlands are filters where sediments and nutrients accumulate, so many plants grow there, e.g. bulrushes, grasses, reeds, waterlilies, sedges and trees. The plants, in turn, provide food and a place for attachment and shelter for many creatures. There is more life, hectare for hectare, in a healthy wetland than in almost any other habitat. These productive places support huge numbers of insects, fish, birds and other animals. Some animals are completely dependant on wetlands, whilst others use wetlands for only part of their lives. The wattled crane, for example, is dependant on wetlands for breeding. The rich diversity of waterbirds in Southern Africa (totalling 130 species) is possible because of the many wetlands spread across the sub-continent. The wetlands of southern Africa are of international importance as they are the southern destination for many migratory wading birds. People and wetlands: Wetlands have been used for centuries as grazing for domestic stock, and as a source of reeds used for thatching, hut construction and basket weaving. They are provide fishing, hunting and the opportunity to observe wildlife, especially birds. Wetlands are appreciated for their beauty as open spaces and also for their educational value.
