2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT

TWO RIVER THEATER OUR MISSION is to create great American theater by developing and producing world masterpieces and new works that most richly direct our gaze to the life of the human spirit. We cultivate an audience that cherishes the intimate joy of theater, enriched when shared by a community of others.

INTRODUCTION Two River Theater began in 1994 with a dream to establish an exceptional professional theater in our community. Today, under the leadership of Artistic Director John Dias and Managing Director Michael Hurst, Two River Theater is receiving critical acclaim and “best of” citations from national and New York press including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Huffington Post. We continue to enhance the experience of our patrons and attract new audience members through humanities initiatives and Inside Two River programming related to each of our productions. Our programs for young people have expanded beyond student matinees to include new work commissioned specifically for young audiences. Two River Theater continues to attract new visitors and loyal patrons to our home in Red Bank, contributing significantly to the $32 million economic impact of the arts in Monmouth County annually. Our 2014/15 Season was a true testament to Two River’s mission to develop and produce both world masterpieces and original plays. The fall featured three classics: Molière’s The School for Wives, Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot, and Alan Ayckborn’s Absurd Person Singular; while our spring featured all world premieres: Tony Meneses’ Guadalupe in the Guest Room, and two projects that the theater commissioned, Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s Your Blues Ain’t Sweet Like Mine, and Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz’s musical Be More Chill.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Joan and Robert Rechnitz, Founders

2014/15 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: Our production of Lerner and Loewe’s classic musical Camelot proved so popular that it holds the title of the highest-grossing production in Two River’s 21-year history. Two River was recognized for the fifth consecutive year by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts as a Major Arts Institution for achieving the highest standard of excellence as recognized by our peers in the arts industry. Two River enjoyed a 215% increase in tickets sold to patrons under age 30 as compared to our past four seasons. Through our Inside Two River program, we offered over 40 community events throughout the season that deepened our audiences’ connection to our productions. Two River was one of the only five theaters in the country to receive a grant through the Doris Duke Foundation’s Theatre Commissioning and Production Initiative for our commissioned musical, Be More Chill. The original cast recording of Be More Chill, released by Sh-K-Boom Records premiered on October 30/2015 to great fanfare. Two River continues to build a pipeline of new and commissioned work, with new plays in development from Madeleine George, Lisa Kron, Tony Meneses, Martin Moran and Regina Taylor; new musicals by the teams of Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz, Daniel Maté and Marshall Pailet, and Sarah Schlesinger and Mike Reid; and a music-theater retelling of Shakespeare’s Pericles, crafted by the innovative artist Rinde Eckert and director David Schweizer, which will premiere in April of Two River’s 2015/16 Season. Two River continued to host artist residencies, retreats, readings, and workshops to support and enhance the creative process. We also nurtured longstanding collaborations with NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program and Clubbed Thumb to support the development of new work. Two River Theater’s Facebook reach totaled 525,004 users with 113,859 engaging with our content. Two River’s new Nosotros program, geared towards supporting Latino artists and fostering closer relationships with our Latino neighbors, included seven community workshops with playwright Tanya Saracho and director Jerry Ruiz, with participants such as Red Bank High School’s Source Latina Girls’ Group and Casa Freehold, a nonprofit that advocates for and works with day laborers in the local area. The second year of Two River’s “A Little Shakespeare” program featured a 75-minute version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, adapted, designed and directed by professional artists, and performed by 19 students from local schools. All of Two River’s Education initiatives, including TheaterWorks, No Seats Empty, and Metro Scholars, were augmented by opportunities for enhanced learning such as curriculum support, in-school residencies, pre-show workshops and/or post-show discussions.

Thank you for being part of the Two River Theater family this year—we share all of these accomplishments with you!

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT BEFORE & AFTER PLAY Two River’s popular Before Play series features a free pre-performance talk before each performance about the themes of our work given by a cast member or a member of the Artistic Department. In our 2014/15 Season, Two River facilitated 185 Before and After Play discussions, reaching more than 8,800 patrons with context and background about our shows. Our After Play series featured moderated talkbacks designed to further engage audiences in more in-depth discussions about our work. Two River held lively and informative discussions after every performance of Your Blues Ain’t Sweet Like Mine and select performances of each of last season’s other productions. We also presented a special post-play discussion during Your Blues Ain’t Sweet Like Mine about creating social change with Two River Artistic Director John Dias, playwright and director Ruben Santiago-Hudson and two special guests: Ed Johnson, who served the City of Asbury Park from 1998-2013 as Mayor, City Councilman and Chairman of the Urban Enterprise Zone, and former governor of New Jersey James McGreevey. For our production of Guadalupe in the Guest Room, Two River held a special post-play discussion featuring Brian Eugenio Herrera, Assistant Professor of Theater in the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University and author of Latin Numbers: Playing Latino in Twentieth Century U.S. Popular Performance.

We launched our 2014/15 Season with Mark Wing-Davey’s irresistible production of Molière’s classic comedy, The School for Wives. This masterpiece of French farce told the story of Arnolphe, a middle-aged man (played by Robert Stanton) whose plan to mold a simple woman named Agnès (Phillipa Soo, who went on to star in Broadway’s Hamilton) into the “perfect” wife went quickly awry.

Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot is one of the greatest musicals in the American musical theater canon. Our production gave this legendary tale a modern twist, showcasing the youth and vitality of King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, and Sir Lancelot. Director David Lee (co-creator of Frasier, a writer and director for Cheers, and director of our production of Present Laughter) returned to Two River to streamline the classic musical, which featured a cast of eight and an eight-piece orchestra. Camelot was praised by audiences and critics alike, becoming the highest-grossing production in our 21-year history. LEAD PRODUCTION SPONSOR:

In the New Year, audiences unwound from the holiday season with prolific playwright Alan Ayckbourn’s satirical comedy Absurd Person Singular, which showed how three English couples dealt with their relationships and social standings over three successive holiday gatherings. Our three-act production featured a set that rotated—to the tune of Blood Sweat & Tears’ “Spinning Wheel”—to reveal each setting. Audiences laughed out loud as the song’s lyrics “what goes up, must come down” resonated throughout the couple’s crazy antics, mental breakdowns, and ridiculous party games. PRODUCTION CO-SPONSOR:

Two River welcomed rising playwright Tony Meneses into our family of artists with Guadalupe in the Guest Room, which told the story of two people, with nothing in common but a shared grief, who bonded in the most unexpected ways. This world-premiere play achieved something very rarely captured: the state of confusion when you are surrounded by a language not your own—and the joy of a connection that transcends language—in a deeply moving and very funny celebration of life, new beginnings, and the healing power of telenovelas.

Our second world premiere of the season, Your Blues Ain’t Sweet Like Mine was written and directed by Tony Award-winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson (director of August Wilson’s Jitney and Two Trains Running). This immensely powerful, provocative, and daring drama followed the friendship of Zeke, a highly educated, once-homeless man who described himself as a “walking outburst,” and Judith, a self-described “seeker of knowledge.” When an Upper West Side dinner party invitation brought an unlikely group together, the characters engaged in a passionate and explosive debate on America’s relationship to race. We concluded our season with the commissioned world premiere of Be More Chill, a highly anticipated debut by the team of Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz—two of the most exciting voices in musical theater—based on the acclaimed 2004 novel by Ned Vizzini. When Jeremy, an average teenaged dork, swallowed a pill-sized supercomputer called The Squip that promised to bring him everything he desired most, he was transformed from complete geek to the coolest guy in class. Audiences—many of whom saw the show multiple time— raved about our production, which led us to extend the run and release of an original cast recording. LEAD PRODUCTION SPONSOR:

LEADERSHIP BIOS JOHN DIAS, (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR) assumed his position as Artistic Director of Two River Theater in August 2010 after working as a producer and dramaturg in New York for 20 years. In partnership with Managing Director Michael Hurst he has brought new vitality to the 20-yearold Red Bank theater, including producing subscription shows on two stages for the first time; launching the theater’s first literary department and commissioning program for new plays; presenting annual events such as a musical theater cabaret in collaboration with New York University’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program and the Crossing Borders festival of Latino plays; and developing numerous arts-education initiatives for young people including A Little Shakespeare, an annual production of one of Shakespeare’s plays performed by high-school students. Throughout his career, John has been a leading advocate for bold new American plays and stimulating productions of the classics, including the Broadway productions of Lisa Kron’s Well and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. For 12 seasons, he worked in a variety of capacities at The Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, including Associate Producer and Associate Artistic Director. During much of his tenure at The Public, working for Producer George C. Wolfe, he was responsible for all aspects of play production on the theater’s six stages and the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. He also ran the theater’s literary department, overseeing new-play workshops and productions of classics by Shakespeare and other writers, and he directed and taught in the Shakespeare Lab, a professional actor-training program. Previously, John was dramaturg at Hartford Stage Company, and co-founded and led Affinity Company Theater, a production company dedicated to bringing daring new works from around the world to New York, and The Playwrights Realm, an off-Broadway company that produces new plays by emerging artists. He has been a Tony Award nominator, a consultant for the National Endowment for the Arts and numerous other organizations, and he has taught at New York University and Yale University. John currently teaches in the graduate school at Columbia University. He received his BA from George Washington University and his MFA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. MICHAEL HURST, (MANAGING DIRECTOR) joined Two River Theater as Managing Director in 2011, bringing 20 years of theater and non-profit experience, including 16 years at The Public Theater. Under his joint leadership with Artistic Director John Dias, Two River has experienced ambitious growth and enjoyed new recognition in the national theater community. During his tenure, Two River has embarked on a new Strategic Plan; began producing subscription shows on two stages for the first time; and launched the theater’s first commissioning program for original plays, as well as numerous new community and education programs. Prior to coming to Two River, Michael was on the staff of The Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival for 16 years, including four years as General Manager and six as Managing Director, overseeing budgets that ranged from $16 to $20 million. Michael was responsible for all financial aspects of the productions at The Public Theater and Central Park’s Delacorte Theater. During his tenure at The Public, he oversaw the Broadway transfers of many productions, including Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama; Elaine Stritch at Liberty; Take Me Out, winner of the Tony Award for Best Play; and Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori’s Caroline, or Change. Michael was also part of all strategic planning for the theater, including its artistic leadership transition and the opening of Joe’s Pub, now considered one of the country’s best small venues for music and performance. Most recently, Michael was Chief Operating Officer of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which presents the prestigious New York Film Festival. At the Film Society, he oversaw the building of a new three-theater, $40-million facility that opened in June 2011, and he managed the organizational growth necessary to support the facility. His work in the commercial theater includes serving as Executive Producer for San Francisco-based producer Carole Shorenstein Hayes, starting her New York office and creating a strategic plan to develop new theatrical work. Michael is a member of The Broadway League and served as Vice President for the League of Off-Broadway Theatres & Producers for six years. He is a graduate of Rutgers University and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the New Jersey Theatre Alliance. ROBERT M. RECHNITZ, (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) founded Two River Theater Company in 1994. An educator, writer, and director, he is one of New Jersey’s most esteemed theater leaders. He earned his PhD from the University of Colorado and was a professor of American Literature at Monmouth University for 35 years, contributing scholarly articles and short stories to various academic journals. As Two River’s Executive Producer, he oversaw the theater’s move from Monmouth University in West Long Branch to the Algonquin Arts in Manasquan. While the company was in residence in Manasquan, he planned for and oversaw the building of a state-of-the-art, two theater complex in Red Bank as Two River’s permanent home. He directed the opening production in the new building, the classic American comedy You Can’t Take It With You, in 2005. Among the other notable productions he has directed at Two River are Curse of the Starving Class (for which he received The Star Ledger’s nomination for Best Director of a Comedy), True West, A View from the Bridge, The Glass Menagerie, Thieves’ Carnival, Uncle Vanya, American Buffalo, and Barefoot in the Park. He has been honored with Monmouth University’s 2001 Maurice Pollak Award for Distinguished Community Service, and the 2007 Celebration of Excellence Award from the Monmouth County Arts Council. At the start of the new century, the Star-Ledger named him one of the “20 New Jerseyans to Watch.”

VOLUNTEER GUILD The Two River Theater Guild is a dynamic group of people involved in all aspects of the theater. Guild members share their energy, ideas, and skills by volunteering their time and talents each season. Two River’s Guild members assist the staff throughout the year in the administrative offices with marketing and fundraising mailings, in house management as ushers at each performance, and in hospitality to staff at the theater’s many special events.

THANKS TO OUR GUILD FOR THEIR SUPPORT!
