IMPORTANT DATES

Attention new officers! Get training for your position at WOW! We are planning to have this take place at Camp All Saints in Pottsboro, Texas from August 9-11, 2019. We will be presenting forums and doing fun activities to get the fall semester rolling. Registration prices to be announced at a later date.

This past May was Mental Health Awareness Month. Although the month is over, we should keep spreading awareness in this growing issue.

THE BEYOUTIFUL PROJECT by Joseph Pham

This year, the Governor’s Project is related to mental health. I chose this as my project because it an issue that I deal with personally, and I know that many of us face it ourselves. There is still a stigma when it comes to mental health and I want to change that, to let other know more about the cause and how they can spread awareness. My goal is to educate others and spread the message that “It is OK not to be OK”. The project will consist of awareness campaigns and working alongside your mental health programs on your campuses.

THE PROJECT: 2019 by Ishan Paranjape Photo Submitted by Ishan Paranjape At the University of Texas at Austin, we take pride in setting up and participating in philanthropic events as big as our campus. One key example of such an event was The Project 2019 – UT’s largest day of service. The overarching goal of The Project 2019 was to promote community service in underserved areas of Austin. The Executive Committee of The Project 2019 set up volunteering activities at more than five different sites around Austin, following a pep rally at Dobie Middle School. This year, our pep rally featured four major guests: our UT Austin student body president and vice president, an elected Austin Independent School District (AISD) trustee, and a member of the Austin City Council.

After the pep rally, the majority of our members went to volunteer at the J.D. Frank Dobie Pre-Kindergarten Center. Our volunteering activity was to recreate a drop-off and pick-up zone for parents and their children by repainting a sidewalk just outside of the Pre-K center. Before Texas CKI helped with the effort, the sidewalk paint had looked faint and chipped after withstanding the harsh Texas climate. Our first task was to peel off whatever was left of the old paint from the sidewalk. The section of the sidewalk we needed to repaint was about 40’ long; we broke the sidewalk into different chunks from which we could scrape paint. Once 90% of the old paint was removed from a tile, a new layer of paint was applied.

TEXAS CKI - THE PROJECT: 2019

I’m glad that my CKI chapter had the opportunity to contribute to UT Austin’s largest day of service and serve a community in need. I hope that we continue to help underserved areas of Austin this upcoming school year.

Participating in The Project 2019 with my fellow CKI members not only helped us uphold CKI’s tenet of service, but also allowed us to engage in fellowship. During one of our volunteering breaks, one of our fellow members helped us soothe our sore arms and legs by encouraging us to participate in an impromptu yoga session with her. This inspired us to create another CKI social/fellowship event the following month.

APRIL 2019

TRANSITION TO COLLEGE. CKI, Key Club, and Kiwanians in the southeast region gather together for Key to College.

KEY TO COLLEGE

by Vincent Tangavelou Photo Submitted by Vincent Tangavelou Key to College is an event we created to help provide high school students a smoother transition into college through a variety of workshops focused around college applications, maintaining a lifestyle and deciding a major. Over 60 students from numerous Key Clubs around the Greater Houston area participated in our student-led board, asking CKI members about any question they may have related to college. And to close the day, students created a Earth Day service project and were able to hear a talk from Héctor Morales,

the Education Policy Manager for Harris County Pct. 2, that help to inspire academic success despite the challenges of life. Our first Key to College was a huge success and we can't wait to make our next one even better. However, it is all thanks to our the various Key Clubs, TAMU CKI and Kiwanis representatives, Hunter Faubion and Jennifer Tuggle from Nederland ISD, that helped make this happen!

“Our first Key to College was a success and we can't wait to make our next one even better.”

MEET YOUR 2019-2020 DISTRICT BOARD by Mariane Sanchez Photos Taken by An Tran and John Cano

I almost did not go to DCON 2019. However, it took a bit of convincing. My predecessor, Yahaira Arneros, purposefully did not vote for me in the chapter-level elections because she saw that I was destined for greater. Plus, my friend and now fellow board member, Peter, hovered the registration form over my head. If it were not for these two along with the rest of UTA CKI, I would not be able to see this organization in a different light today. Although I ran unopposed, the elections process was intimidating. I still had to convince people that I was qualified for the job. Meeting Joseph, Taylor, and Ethan at the caucuses made me feel at ease. I was not alone.

A few weeks after DCON, the newly elected leaders met at the district office in Pantego for Board Trainer. It is really cool to see things operate on a higher level, and my respect for the district's work has skyrocketed. We hope to build upon the district's achievements, and make this year a great, successful one. There is a lot of planning to be made before the semester starts, and we are so excited to work with you all. We are a small group right now, but we are actively seeking people to join us. It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to the 2019 - 2020 District Board (so far).
