GOVERNOR'S PROJECT

WHERE TO FIND RECRUITMENT MATERIALS Hello Mighty T-O,

My name is Tristan Adams and I am the Membership Development & Education Chair for T-O CKI this year. I hope everyone has had a smooth start to the year and you all are spreading the good name of CKI across your campuses. While our initial recruitment drive for the start of school is over, recruitment is a year-round focus! A big way to recruit throughout the year is to have a presence online through social media and even a website. Making posts about what you are doing and when it is will encourage prospective members to attend events. Also, be sure to participate in CKI Week, which is coming on October 14-19. This year, our focus for CKI week is recruitment based, and I hope you all are looking forward to this exciting week! One of my main focuses this year is that I am trying to make it easier for clubs to recruit by providing as many resources as possible all in one convenient location. In the club Google Drive accounts, I have placed a folder named “Chapter Officer Resources”. This not only includes recruitment/retention strategies, but it also includes many other useful tools to help clubs efficiently run. Also included in the folder are all the resources available for CKI Week 2019. I will be updating the folder as more resources become available so keep checking it to see what is new. As always, I am here to help with any problems or concerns you may have. If you need anything, please feel free to contact me at any time as I will be here to help you succeed!

Yours in service, Tristan Adams 2019-20 MD&E Chair

RECRUITMENT STORIES Our chapter share their experiences with recruiting members at their tabling events!

At organization's night, the 2019-2020 TAMUG CKI officers coordinated a booth to promote and recruit new members. We set up our poster, banner, brochures, and presented our new recruitment video to display our great organization. Each person that checked out our booth received some candy and learned all the opportunities CKI has to offer. Â The officers had lots of fun engaging with potential new members and are ready to have an outstanding year.

UH CKI

As a part of our Weeks of Welcome, UH CKI went to Cat's Back, a recruiting event that helps display organizations to incoming students at the beginning of the semester. Aimed primarily at incoming college students, we recruited over 75 new students that were interested in joining the Kiwanis Family. Many were passionate about the many service projects we take part in, such as WASH, BeYOUtiful and WithRefugees. We were excited to meet so many people excited about making an impact through volunteering and met many new interested faces, including several students that were Key Clubbers in high school and with some that even attended our Key to College event in the spring.

CAMERON CKI

FROM FIVE TO FIFTY IN JUST A MONTH

by Daisy Cossio Photo Submitted by Daisy Cossio

Our chapter started off the school year with just about 5 prospective members other than officers. Through tabling at our on-campus Block Party and Organization Fair, our chapter was able to obtain over 50 students to sign up to join CU-CKI. Here’s how we did it, and how your chapter can too.

Keep your table simple and cohesive, yet also eye-catching. It’s important to view your table from the perspective of a student walking by and see what about it will make them stop and look! For us, that included a main poster board, a donation can for a charity, an upcoming CKI events sign (Las Vegas grabs attention!), a school supplies basket for students to enter to win (who doesn’t love free stuff?), our new t-shirts, and our DCON award-winning painted jeans. Instead of crowding your poster boards with too much text, use pictures, colors, and larger fonts to where the eye can easily flow. Utilize the resources provided for you on circlek.org!

Recruiters: every movement, word, and facial expression matters. It’s important to look like you’re having a good time, always! Try not to hide behind your table, and instead smile, converse with your other members, play some music and have a little fun. You may not see any nearby students looking, but certainly someone is stealing a glance so it's important to always look welcoming. There’s a difference between being overbearing and being encouraging, so don’t put too much pressure on any students right away. If you don’t know how to start the conversation about CKI, ask if they were in/know about Key Club, need service hours for scholarships/athletics, or if they love traveling.

Use technology to your advantage. Our club Vice President implemented a Member Registration Form into our website which we had every student even slightly interested fill out through our phones after speaking with them. (No one turned us down!) This simultaneously counted as an entry into the basket giveaway, which its winner was announced at our first meeting. Doing so allowed not only for us to have an easy way to contact everyone who was interested, but also give students another reason to come to our first meeting. That registration form translated into a spreadsheet on our drive which became vital later in keeping track of who our members were, who wanted to buy a t-shirt, who paid their dues, and even which students who were initially interested needed a little more reaching out. There’s something out there made for every need!

A STITCH IN TIME by Ishan Paranjape Photo Submitted by Ishan Paranjape Most of us college students have heard of the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears at some point in our childhood. In that story, we learn to avoid the extremes and search for what’s just right. Recruiting for club members works in a similar way. That initial conversation during orientation went well, and the student seemed really interested in your CKI club, but how do you follow up with him or her? The key is to time your communication just right. Send an e-mail out too late before that first meeting, potential members might think it’s too short of a notice to come. Send an e-mail out too early, and they might forget to take a second look it. However, if you time your communication just right, potential members will be reminded of your upcoming events well enough in advance that they cannot forget. How did we determine the right time to send an email? First, we chose a day of the week when we believed members would be most inclined towards looking at our e-mails. Because we hold our meetings on Tuesday evenings, we knew that reminding people about our upcoming events during or before the weekend was a bad idea. Since Tuesday felt too late, we settled on a Monday. We then decided what would be a good time on Monday. I’ve read that interviewers for full-time jobs tend to be the most attentive to interviewees around 10 AM. Sure enough, sending our members e-mails at this time resulted in good turnout levels. While timeliness is not the only factor in recruiting members, it is definitely an important one. Once you know your club’s “when,” you can work on improving your club’s “how many.”

HOW T-O SURVIVE COLLEGE Here are some survival tips from our district board!

I’m new out here, so I don’t know how good my advice is, but I hear going to class is helpful. ADDI DUERKSEN, DISTRICT EVENTS CO-CHAIR, FRESHMAN

Taking one day (Friday or Saturday) to do anything other than studying, or for at least most of the day. TRISTON DEES, DISTRICT EVENTS CO-CHAIR, SOPHOMORE

Make a study schedule. Block out time for each class and keep your schedule with you all the time. ETHAN ARREDONDO, CENTRAL TEXAS LTG, SOPHOMORE

The best thing I've learned on how to do well in college is to not wait until the last minute to study or do homework. Otherwise, you may end up skipping class to work on stuff for another class! TAYLOR MADDOX, DISTRICT TREASURER, SENIOR

Utilize your campus resources, such as taking an essay to the writing center to be reviewed or printing class notes at the library. And always stop by events that offer free food to grab a meal and maybe meet a new friend! ALLISON MACIAS, ASST. DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR, DEGREED
