WELCOME TO TEXAS PERFORMING ARTS
The 2019-20 Texas Performing Arts season has arrived! Through Campus & Community programs, we provide dedicated events designed to deepen your understanding and enjoyment of many of the performances you attend. Three overarching goals form the cornerstone of our activities as we seek to engage, educate, and bring artists together with The University of Texas at Austin community and Central Texas audience. We strive to: • Align with the university’s academic mission • Provide unique opportunities for student engagement • Be a part of cultural leadership in the community Each year, we welcome thousands of guests at various events ranging from brown bag lunches with Broadway cast members to pre-performance talks presented by faculty and other experts. We also host youth performances for grade 6-12 students and master classes by visiting artists. We believe that these events offer valuable insight into the training, technical skills, and the creative process of working artists. For the latest information on our new and upcoming events, visit texasperformingarts.org/get-involved. We look forward to seeing you!

ABOUT OUR PARTNERS
Community Arts Partners We co-sponsor events at our partners’ venues including the Jewish Community Center of Austin, City of Austin Senior Activity Centers, George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center, Asian American Cultural Center, and the Austin Public Library. By working together, partners strengthen each other, and reach far beyond what one entity alone can provide Central Texas communities. Campus Arts Partners We share a collaborative spirit with colleges, academic departments, and programs. Our goal is to enhance and broaden the scope of the performing arts as an educational tool. We have been pleased to partner with Humanities Institute, Steve Hicks School of Social Work, Briscoe Center for American History, Harry Ransom Center, John L. Warfield Center for African and AfricanAmerican Studies, Austin Community College District, and Huston-Tillotson University among others. Lexus Broadway in Austin Each season, we are proud to partner with Lexus Broadway in Austin to provide unique and exciting opportunities for community members to engage with touring companies. The performances Triptych (Eyes of One on Another), Sean Dorsey Dance BOYS IN TROUBLE, and Martha Redbone Bone Hill: The Concert are part of TPA’s The Power of Protest: Arts and Civil Disobedience project. The Power of Protest explores how work in the performing and visual arts has the ability to become, in and of itself, an act of civil disobedience with capacity to drive social and political change. The topic is motivated by the increasingly contentious climate in the United States, as demonstrated by worldwide protests for women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, immigration reform, healthcare reform, environmental protection, the guarantee of racial equality, and the current national controversy regarding the continued display or removal of monuments honoring Confederate generals across the country. The broad exploration of protest and civil disobedience also allows for the inclusion of concepts like identity, voice, agency and reflection. The Power of Protest is made possible by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Students Experiencing the Arts with their Teachers Ticket Program Thanks to the generosity of Texas Performing Arts donors, we are able to offer grade 6-12 students and their teachers FREE tickets to select Essential Series performances. To relate this experience to classroom instruction, teachers must attend the performance with their students. Teacher Tix at TPA We’re excited to offer Teacher Tix, a new program that provides grade 6-12 educators a complimentary pair of tickets to select performances in appreciation of their work shaping future generations of artists and arts appreciators. Sign up to receive periodic emails with a list of educator-specific offers and invitations at texasperformingarts.org/teacher-tix-tpa
Performing Arts and Academic Connection (PAAC) In the Performing Arts and Academic Connection (PAAC) program, TPA staff members collaborate with Language Arts teachers to provide related, standards-based lessons that provide an academic connection to performing arts. This year, we welcome Round Rock ISD to the program and celebrate our sixth year with Bastrop ISD. In past years, the PAAC program ran in Elgin and Del Valle ISDs. Behind the Scenes Career and STEAM Tours TPA staff members lead Behind-The-Scenes Career tours backstage, introducing students to highly-skilled staff members. Our tours are centered around career paths in areas such as audio, lighting, scenery design, and prop making. We also offer tours that focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) skills that are required in these roles. Teacher Appreciation Night At our second annual Teacher Appreciation Night, we will recognize teachers for their dedication and hard work. Area fine arts teachers and administrators will be treated to an evening of fun with the male a cappella group Straight No Chaser in Bass Concert Hall.
These programs are open to all public and private grade 6-12 educators in Texas. For questions, ticket requests, or career tour requests, contact Brenda Simms at 512.471.2131 or bsimms@texasperformingarts.org
