Triptych will contain a frank discussion about sexuality, queer identity, and race, and may include photographs taken by Robert Mapplethorpe depicting sexuality, sexual acts, nudity, flowers, and classical portraiture.

Triptych (Eyes of One on Another) Thirty years after photographer and visual artist Robert Mapplethorpe’s untimely death, it’s difficult to turn away from the compelling emotional complexity of his influential body of work. In this new performance piece, music, poetry, and photography come together in a theatrical context, exploring the impact Mapplethorpe’s work had on the lives and careers of composer Bryce Dessner and librettist Korde Arrington Tuttle.

This major collaboration with director Kaneza Schaal, features the poetry of Tuttle, Essex Hemphill, Patti Smith, and others as well the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth. It revisits the formative impact of Mapplethorpe’s work, inviting the audience to experience Dessner’s music against some of the most captivating and divisive words and images the world has ever known. Through music and large-scale projection of Mapplethorpe’s images, this extraordinary work allows the audience to peer inside Mapplethorpe’s bold, insatiable view of how human beings look, touch, feel, hurt, and love one another.

The Percussion Collective transcends the medium of percussion through uncommon performance experiences that surprise and engage audiences at a profound emotional level. Artistic Director and percussion luminary Robert van Sice, considered one of the world’s foremost performers of contemporary music for marimba, has assembled a collection of many of today’s brightest percussion stars to bring his unique approach to percussion chamber music to the stage. Featuring players from Europe, Asia, and the US, this new generation of virtuosi represent the leading edge of innovation in concert conception and performance.

In 2015, Nobuntu was nominated for Musician of the Year at the Zimbabwe International Women Awards.


Nobuntu The word “Nobuntu” defines an African concept valuing humbleness, love, unity, and family from a woman’s perspective. This awardwinning, all-female a cappella quintet from Zimbabwe has drawn international acclaim for its fusion of traditional music, Afro-Jazz, and Gospel. Their rich, pure voices and exhilarating rhythms are accompanied by minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments, and authentic dance in an effort to preserve their cultural heritage while also promoting positive change through the unifying power of music.

Considered to be the pioneer of “Street Dance” Theater, Rennie Harris presents a new eveninglong multimedia work that celebrates funk music and street dance of the 1970’s. Narrated by Rennie Harris and set against the landscape of a video montage of AfricanAmerican communities of that era, Rennie Harris Funkedified navigates the audience through a snippet of the 70’s per Harris’ journey into funk music and culture, which ultimately evolves into hip-hop culture. The piece features dancers from Rennie Harris Puremovement American Street Dance Theater Company, the internationally known lock-dance group The Hood Lockers, and the New York funk band Invincible.

Born in Baghdad, Rahim Al Haj is a master of the oud—a stringed instrument with a history dating back 5,000 years. Music has been a constant in his life throughout his years as an Iraqi, a political refugee, and now an American citizen.

Created from the text of actual letters expressing the emotions of Iraqis living in their war-torn country, Letters from Iraq is poignant storytelling through the music of war, its aftermath and its consequences. These stories become more than an aural presentation. They are truly a virtual visual reality at the hand of Rahim and his quintet, each piece presenting a unique scenario, together weaving a complete tale of devastation, pain, redemption and, ultimately, hope.

Award-winning actress and filmmaker Isabella Rossellini takes inspiration from the natural world in her new theatricalized lecture: Link Link Circus. Illustrated with short comic films, home movies, and animation, Link Link Circus addresses the latest scientific discoveries about animal minds, intelligence, and emotions. Joined onstage by various animals portrayed by Pan, her trained dog, Rossellini transforms herself into Aristotle, Descartes, F.S. Skinner, Charles Darwin, and others, to deliver a vivid monologue about the brilliance of the animal kingdom.

Renowned avant-garde jazz drummer Andrew Cyrille, whose associations have ranged from a long, vintage collaboration with pianist Cecil Taylor to performing with legendary musicians including Rahshan Roland Kirk and Freddie Hubbard, brings his quartet to the McCullough Theatre stage. Members of this all-star quartet include guitar luminary Bill Frisell, one of the most sought-after guitar voices in contemporary music; keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum, known for bringing the first Moog Synthesizer to Europe as well as being a founding member of the seminal electronic music group Musica Elettronica Viva; and highly in-demand bassist Ben Street.

All-male vocal ensemble Profeti della Quinta creates vivid and expressive performances focusing on the vocal repertoire of the 16th and early 17th centuries. Founded in the Galilee region of Israel by bass singer and harpsichordist Elam Rotem, the ensemble now resides in Basel, Switzerland. The core ensemble includes countertenor, tenor, and bass singers, who perform either a cappella or with period instruments.

Winner of the Cleveland Quartet Award for the 2018–19 and 2019–20 seasons as the 2016 First Prize winner of the prestigious Banff International String Quartet Competition, Rolston String Quartet was named among the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s 2016 “30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30.” Rolston String Quartet began a two-year term as the Yale School of Music’s fellowship quartet-in-residence. They have also served as the graduate quartet-in-residence at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music.

Singer-songwriter Martha Redbone’s music flows equally from her own unique, awardwinning blend of Native American elements and her deep roots in Appalachian folk and Piedmont blues. Presented as a dramatic musical work with a cast of eight actor/musicians, this epic journey covers 200 years of Redbone’s native family history in the Appalachian Mountains— spanning across four generations of women in a Cherokee family, exploring their lives and stories. Bone Hill is a story about the family’s commitment to the land, to the simplicity and sacredness of that connection, and the ruptures that threaten to extinguish it. The music is radically wide-ranging, from traditional Cherokee chants and lullabies to bluegrass and blues, country, gospel, jazz, Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues, and funk.

AXIS Dance Company, one of the world’s most acclaimed and innovative ensembles of performers with and without disabilities, will change the way you think about dance and the possibilities of the human body forever. Founded in 1987 and based in Oakland, California, AXIS has become a jewel of contemporary dance and disability culture. AXIS has paved the way for a powerful contemporary dance form—physically integrated dance—performing in over 100 cities in the US, Israel, UK, Europe, and Russia.

For their Austin debut, AXIS will perform a new work, and their first international commission, titled Alice in Oakland. AXIS Artistic Director Marc Brew works with UK-based dance theater artist Arthur Pita on this piece that explores the growing rate of homelessness and the conditions homeless individuals face in the Bay Area. AXIS dancers will serve as vessels to portray these intimate stories.

East Coast Chamber Orchestra Texas Performing Arts welcomes one of the most exceptional ensembles of today’s generation! In 2001, a group of colleagues and friends from leading conservatories and festivals across the country envisioned the creation of a democratically run, self-conducted chamber orchestra that would thrive on the pure joy and camaraderie of classical music-making. The result is East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO), a dynamic collective that combines the strength and power of a great orchestra with the personal involvement and sensitivity of superb chamber music.

Chaplin’s The Kid Marc Ribot, one of the great eclectic electric guitarists, has released more than 25 albums under his own name over a 40-year career, exploring everything from the pioneering jazz of Albert Ayler with his group Spiritual Unity, to the Cuban son of Arsenio Rodríguez producing two critically acclaimed releases under Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos, and his critically acclaimed release Silent Movies, which was described by the Village Voice as a “down-inmouth-near masterpiece.”

Dave Douglas, trumpet Prolific trumpeter, composer, and educator, Dave Douglas joins the UT Jazz Orchestra as part of the Butler School of Music’s annual Longhorn Jazz Festival. Recognized as one of the most important and original American jazz and improvisation musicians, Dave Douglas’ many accolades include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland Award and two Grammy nominations. He has developed work for many unique ensembles and has released 38 albums as a leader. Directed by Professor Jeff Hellmer, the UT Jazz Orchestra is the Butler School of Music’s premier jazz ensemble. In recent years, the Jazz Orchestra has performed with such luminaries as Michael Brecker, Maria Schneider, Stefon Harris, Joshua Redman, Cyrus Chestnut, Conrad Herwig, and Joe Lovano.
