Beyond the Performance
At Texas Performing Arts we make sure engagement with the arts extends beyond the stage, both on campus and in the community. Through workshops, discussions, youth performances, and more, we strive for everyone to be able to feed their artistic spirit.
Our 23/24 Season opened in September with an incredible lineup of international theatre, dance, and music and opportunities to engage with our visiting artists. TPA’s spring programs continue with more exciting live performance experiences you won’t want to miss, and we hope you will join us. Here are a few highlights of our campus and community activities from this fall:
1
The Women Drummers of Rwanda and playwright Kiki Katese joined the Carver Museum and community members for a special performance and discussion in conjunction with the Texas premiere of her acclaimed new play The Book of Life.

hollywoodbackdrops.org is Now Live
Texas Performing Arts is home to the most extensive educational collection of Hollywood motion picture backdrops in the world. Comprised of 68 backings, the Hollywood Backdrop Collection includes original works from iconic and celebrated films such as The Sound of Music (20th Century Fox 1965), Ben Hur (MGM 1959), and North by Northwest (MGM 1958). Generously donated to Texas Performing Arts by J.C. Backings and the Art Directors Guild Archives’ Backdrop Recovery Project, the collection is a living legacy of Hollywood's Golden Age.
Thanks to TPA supporters Susan and Robert Morse this unique collection is now available worldwide in an easy-touse, mobile friendly website. Texas Performing Arts' participation in the Jimmy Awards® is supported, in part, by Andrew & Mary Ann Heller; Marcia & Gary Nelson; Bettye Nowlin; and Marc & Carolyn Seriff.
Take a Bow! Austin’s own Langston Lee Wins National Jimmy Award
Last June the most talented teenagers from across the country took the stage at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City for the 14th National High School Musical Theatre Awards®, better known as the Jimmys. Among them, two Austin-area students, Langston Lee and Kyra Carr had the opportunity to compete on the Broadway stage with 94 other nominees.
This annual awards event is a coast-tocoast celebration of outstanding student achievement recognizing individual artistry in vocal, dance, and acting performance. Both Langston and Kyra are winners of the 2023 Heller Awards for Young Artists for leading roles in their high school musicals. This was the first year that Heller winners could compete at the national level, thanks to a partnership with Texas Performing Arts, a member of the Broadway League. At the end of an unforgettable evening of show-stopping performances, the top honor of Best Performance by an Actor was awarded to Langston.
But the Jimmys is not only an awards event, it’s a once-in-lifetime opportunity for the students to learn what it takes to build a performing arts career through coaching sessions, training, and rehearsals led by some of Broadway’s most accomplished professionals. Nurturing homegrown talent and guiding
and supporting the next generation of artists is central to TPA's mission and we could not be happier for Langston, Kyra, and all of the nominees. Bravo!
Want to learn how you can support the Jimmy Awards® through TPA? Contact support@texasperformingarts.org or call 512.471.1195.

ABOUT WESTERN SKIES
A performance of songs, stories, and photographs to get lost and find the way home through the landscape and mythologies of Texas and the American West.
Amid a series of solo road trips through West Texas in 2020 and 2021, musician Darden Smith found himself writing songs at the wheel and taking Polaroid pictures of the stark, and beautiful terrain. Inspired by the spirit of the landscape, he scribbled his observations in a notebook and found new life in old lyrics. Between words, music, and images, the western skies came vividly to life.
This new stage production is an immersive journey through a world both real and imagined, a place of mystery and mythology, possibility, and longing. Smith’s stories, songs, and photographs are steeped in isolation, though rarely lonely. They are timeless, yet acutely aware of the hours and minutes whizzing by like mileposts on the highway. More information can be found at dardensmith.com.
ABOUT DARDEN SMITH
Darden Smith is a Texasbased songwriter, musician, artist, author and educator. Smith has released 17 albums over a 35-year career and toured extensively across the US and Europe. Among his other diverse projects Smith has composed a symphony, scored three fulllength dance theater works, produced a documentary for BBC2 Radio and written music for film and TV. His visual art is in both private and corporate collections as well as the Library of Congress.
Smith is the first recipient of the songwriter in residence position at The University of Texas at Austin. The program, housed in the College of Fine Arts, is part of the University’s efforts to expand live music experiences on campus while integrating the UT community into Austin’s vibrant live music scene.

Owen holds a M.F.A. from the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University and an M. Phil. in Theatre Studies from Trinity College Dublin.
MEMBERS OF THE BAND
Roscoe Beck (Bass Bass player and producer) maintains the pulse, with a mainline to the blues. Roscoe Beck first began to gain attention in the thriving blues and jazz scenes of Austin, Texas in the mid-
1970’s, creating a stir with his band Passenger, and in early collaborations with guitarist Eric Johnson. In 1979, Passenger ventured to Los Angeles at the request of record producer Henry Lewy, and Roscoe soon found himself in a recording studio adding finishing tracks to Leonard Cohen’s Recent Songs album. Tours followed in 1979/1980. Shortly after the Leonard Cohen tours, Passenger disbanded and Roscoe moved to LA, landing the bass chair with the Toshiko Akiyoshi/ Lew Tabackin Big Band and soon after embarking on what would become a decades long association with guitarist Robben Ford. Roscoe’s Austin connection also continued to flourish, resulting in recordings and performances with Joe Ely, Eric Johnson, Omar and the Howlers, Jimmie Vaughan, and many others. In the years since, Roscoe has continued to perform and tour with a wide variety of artists, from long-time collaborators Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, and Leonard Cohen to the Dixie Chicks, singer-songwriter Darden Smith and guitarist Oz Noy.
David Jimenez (Guitar and Vocals), a singer-songwriter from the Rio Grande Valley, has a unique perspective.
Being the youngest on both sides of his giant family (hence The Last Jimenez), he was destined to be a Tejano “living in between worlds” of a border town existence. Much like the bodies of water called “resacas” that inhabit the county where he was born and raised, his music is a specific blend of influences that don’t really exist anywhere else. He’s part troubadour, soul man, guitar slinger, crooner, and the end result is something he calls “Resaca Pop.” “The music just reflects where I’m from and where I’ve been,” says Jimenez. “It’s humid, breezy, sweet, and mysterious.” Now based in Austin, he has quietly made himself a favorite among the deep artists and musicians while still being accessible to listeners that love greasy groove and hooks. “The deeper you go, the more you get, but there’s still plenty on the surface.”
Alex Marrero (Percussion and Vocals) is an Austin, Texas based musician, songwriter, producer, teacher, and bi-lingual voice over talent. Born in Mexico City to Cuban parents, Alex got his professional start playing clubs in Mexico at the age of 15 and has continued his musical evolution since moving to Austin in 1994.
Alex is a respected vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and sought after sideman in various genres. Alex is known for comfortably inhabiting the role of drummer, percussionist, guitar player, background singer, writer or producer. As a lead singer he possesses a unique bravado which has garnered him a reputation as an engaging and charismatic front man. His voice and showmanship present in “Brownout Presents: Brown Sabbath” earned him critical & public acclaim as well as high praise from Ozzy Osbourne himself.
Michael Ramos (Keyboard) is a producer/composer/ musician living in Austin, Texas. He has toured and/
or recorded with the likes of John Mellencamp, Patty Griffin, BoDeans, The Rembrandts, Paul Simon, Kris Kristofferson, and many more. Michael also fronted his own studio project and band, Charanga Cakewalk. His love of Austin, its music scene and musicians, and the people that live here, keep him inspired and busy. Michael received a Latin Grammy in 2016 for his work with Lila Downs on the album, “Ballas y Chocolate”. He is also an A&R person for Lucky Hound Music and is a member of the 484 Artist Management team. He owns his own recording studio, Brown Recluse, where you can find him hard at work most days!

Helping Texans is at the heart of
Over 115 years ago, we opened our doors to help make the lives of hard-working Texans better. We were a family business back then. We remain a family business today with a passion for - and a helping hand in - every community we serve.
From fighting hunger and providing disaster relief to honoring Texas educators and our Nation’s military, we’re firm believers in Texans helping Texans. We do this for one simple reason. We are from here, so we are helping here.
