ina garten

the barefoot contessa

To open the 2013-2014 Season, Texas Performing Arts invites you to enjoy an evening with best-selling cookbook author and Emmy-winning host of Barefoot Contessa, Ina Garten. Texas Monthly’s own Patricia Sharpe will join Ms. Garten in what promises to be a lively and insightful conversation about food. After the opening of an East Hampton store and a series of phenomenally successful cookbooks, the Food Network approached Garten to do a cooking show based on her love of entertaining. That was eleven years ago and her Emmy-winning cooking show, Barefoot Contessa, is now one of the highest rated shows on Food Network.

As always, the multitalented Garten‌was frank, funny, and dedicated to real home cooking rather than flash-in-the-pan tricks. The Seattle Times Photo by: Quentin Bacon

SEPTEMBER 18 BASS CONCERT HALL STAGE 8 PM U.S. Premiere 2013 marks the 21st anniversary of the passing of Astor Piazzolla, the great Argentine composer who innovated and renewed the tango tradition. The evening’s most compelling performance was Ms. Cook’s ‘Here’s to Life.’ To hear this indestructible woman, who is now 83, muse, ‘I had my share, I drank my fill/ And even though I’m satisfied, I’m hungry still’ in a voice that has lowered without shedding any of its luster was to receive lines of personal scripture torn from the soul. SEPTEMBER 19 BASS CONCERT HALL STAGE 8 PM One of Broadway’s all-time greatest voices brings her trio to the Bass Concert Hall stage for an intimate cabaret performance! Winner of virtually every theatrical award, Barbara Cook’s silvery soprano, purity of tone, and warm presence have delighted audiences around the world for more than 50 years. A 2011 Kennedy Center Honoree, Ms. Cook recently returned to the Broadway stage after a 23-year absence and was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in the musical Sondheim on Sondheim.

SEPTEMBER 20 McCullough Theatre 8 PM Texas Performing Arts and the UT Department of Theatre and Dance present two of today’s most distinguished choreographers in an exciting evening of dance. Vincent Mantsoe is one of post-apartheid South Africa’s leading choreographers. His French based company, Association Noa Company Vincent Mantsoe, creates contemporary African work that represents a true global culture of both dancers and disciplines. Mantsoe’s piece Opera for Fools probes the center of the South African shebeen lifestyle during Apartheid, discovering what makes

people enjoy their daily lives and enables them to forgive, but not forget. Choreographer, dancer, and University Associate Professor Charles O. Anderson is artistic director of Dance Theatre X, a Philadelphia based afro-contemporary dance theatre company that was selected among the “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine. april 16 venue to be announced Less than one year before Mozart died, he received a commission for a death mass from a mysterious stranger who intended to pass it off as his own composition. Mozart died penniless before he completed his final composition. To pay for his funeral, his widow had one of his students complete the work as we know it today: Mozart’s Requiem Mass. The exciting Mozart Requiem Undead project takes it back to square one. In this quirky and oversized collaboration, the masterwork is stripped back to what Mozart himself had on paper - the choral parts

and figured bass - and put in the hands of Austin’s Graham Reynolds and Peter Stopschinski who head a pack of luminary alt-classical composers from Texas and beyond in re-imagining a new completion for this masterpiece. Featured Composers

Glenn Kotche (Wilco) Gabriel Prokofiev DJ Spooky aka Paul Miller Adrian Quesada (Grupo Fantasma) Todd Reynolds (Bang on a Can) Peter Stopschinski Graham Reynolds
