Beyond the Performance

At TPA, we believe in the unique power of live performance to uplift, connect, and create community. We work to ensure that our engagement with the arts reaches far beyond the stage. Each year, thousands of students and Central Texas residents participate in TPA’s educational and outreach programs, including pre- and post-show talks, workshops, masterclasses, and school day performances. By offering an array of transformative experiences, we aim to inspire people of all ages and enhance the role of the performing arts in Austin.

Our 24/25 season continues this spring featuring pioneering performances across multiple genres and a number of ways to interact with and learn from our visiting artists. Here are just a few highlights from this fall:

Members of Twyla Tharp Dance led a masterclass with UT dance students ahead of the renowned company’s 60th anniversary performance Diamond Jubilee.

TPA welcomed Austin area students for a special school day performance of The Storyville Mosquito, DJ Kid Koala’s new live-action theatre show combining music, puppets, and stories.

Audience members at the performance of Conspirare’s Considering Matthew Shepard had the opportunity to read replicas of letters sent to Matthew’s parents by people from around the world after learning of his death. Photo by Robert Silver.

Legendary jazz master Branford Marsalis joined the UT Jazz Orchestra & Ensemble for rehearsal during his weeklong residency with TPA and the Butler School of Music.

Students from Hutto Middle School enjoyed a special performance of the Tony-Award winning musical Shucked as part of TPA’s Broadway Experience for Youth program.

TPA Expands School Day Performances to Include First-ever Broadway Show

At TPA, support from donors like you is instrumental in providing programs that expand access to the performing arts for students of all ages. Your support covers bus transportation and free tickets to educational performances with renowned artists. These daytime performances have ignited inspiration and imagination in hundreds of thousands of students across Central Texas.

TPA transforms lives through the power of creativity, education, and the performing arts. We are committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to experience world-class live performances. But we can’t do it without donors like you!

This year, TPA is expanding to reach more than 16,000 K–12 students. For the first time, 3,000

local students will be able to attend a free, daytime performance of the acclaimed Broadway musical Peter Pan. In addition, every 5th grader in Austin Independent School District will attend a special daytime performance of El Otro Oz, a bilingual, Mexican folkinfused musical inspired by The Wizard of Oz. Along with these two presentations, TPA will offer school day performances with Kid Koala, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Versa-Style Street Dance Company for a total of five this year.

Programs like these can’t exist without the generous support of our members and donors like you. Want to learn more about how you can expand live arts access for students in Central Texas? Contact support@texasperformingarts.org or call 512.471.1195.

After which, being broke like most composers, he was a rehearsal pianist and dance arranger for many shows, played in bar rooms, ballet classes, at weddings and strip joints (a particular boon for one who was to write the music for the film The Night They Raided Minsky’s). One morning in 1960 he awoke to find he had written (with Lee Adams and Mike Stewart) Bye Bye Birdie (Tony Award), which is still among the most performed musicals in America, followed by Golden Boy with Sammy Davis, Jr. (Tony Nomination). Then came, Applause (Tony Award), It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman, Rags (Tony Nomination) and Annie (Tony Award). In-between, there have been scores for movies including Bonnie and Clyde and All Dogs Go to Heaven. The Heller Awards for Young Artists—Austin’s Tony Awards® for High School Musical Theatre— are moving to TPA in 2026!

The Heller Awards for Young Artists—Austin’s Tony Awards® for High School Musical Theatre—are moving to TPA in 2026!

The Heller Awards for Young Artists (HAYAs) are moving to TPA, the home of Broadway in Austin, and will become a permanent program beginning in the 2025/2026 season. TPA will hold the Heller Awards ceremony at Bass Concert Hall in the spring of 2026, after 12 successful years at the Long Center for the Performing Arts.

This highly anticipated annual event recognizes the outstanding achievements of high school musical theatre students and educators in the Greater Austin area. Starting with 19 schools participating in the first annual ceremony, the program has grown to now feature 37 schools and counting.

Modeled after the Tony Awards®, the HAYAs honor the entire high school musical experience, on and off the stage. Awards are presented in 19 categories such as best production, lead and supporting performers, and technical design. Through TPA’s connection with the Broadway League, the winners of lead actor and actress at the HAYAs go on to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards. These students join top students from other U.S. regional programs to perform on the Broadway stage in New York City and meet with notable theatre professionals.

Want to make a difference in the lives of students at TPA? Contact support@texasperformingarts.org or call 512.232.8567.

Support for the Heller Awards for Young Artists at Texas Performing Arts is provided by the Heller Awards for Young Artists Endowment and HAYA Executive Producers Andrew & Mary Ann Heller, Bettye Nowlin, Heather Petkovsek, and Marc & Carolyn Seriff. Support for Austin’s participation in the Jimmy Awards is provided by Andrew & Mary Ann Heller, Mila McCutchen, Marcia & Gary Nelson, Bettye Nowlin, and Marc & Carolyn Seriff.

Helping Texans is at the heart of H-E-B.

Over 115 years ago, we opened our doors to help make the lives of hard-working Texans better. We were a family business back then. We remain a family business today with a passion for - and a helping hand in - every community we serve. From fighting hunger and providing disaster relief to honoring Texas educators and our Nation’s military, we’re firm believers in Texans helping Texans. We do this for one simple reason. We are from here, so we are helping here.

Sharing Joy

A gift from longtime Texas Performing Arts members Bill and Anita Cochran enriches the lives of thousands of Austin-area children.

The William and Anita Cochran Endowment for Performing Arts Access and Education supports performances by nationally recognized artists for students from elementary through high school. With their gift, the Cochrans are helping Texas Performing Arts continue to be one of the nation’s highest-impact live arts organizations.

You can support Texas Performing Arts, like the Cochrans, through your will, trust or estate plan to share the joy of vibrant performing arts programming for generations to come.
