) Solar solution ‘never arrived’

Geyser of promises LEON STEENKAMP

Two families hope a conman will land himself in hot water after he fraudulently sold them a solar powered geyser. Eric Chelin from Chrismar in Bellville had one such run-in with the conman who offered him a solar powered geyser at a very good price. The man identified himself as Ian Hendricks and said he worked for a company called EDS. Chelin was convinced to hand over R1 950 for the installation of the geyser. Hendricks explained the rest of the cost would be covered thanks to an Eskom rebate. “He is as cool as a cucumber. We pride ourselves on being quite conservative when it comes to handing money to just anyone. “He had all the documentation, took copies of our IDs, and details of our municipal account and filled in the documentation,” Chelin said. Chelin was told it could take up to two months for the work crew to come around as they were quite busy. “I was given a receipt and that is the only time I became a bit suspicious as it looked a bit dodgy,” Chelin said. When two months went by and there was still no sign of the solar panels, Chelin called Hendricks. “He said that we were not on the list yet but would be on the next run. Two weeks later we called again and got a voicemail. We then laid a charge with the police.”

Chelin is not the only one who has been scammed like this; a semi-retired couple from Bothasig was also deceived by Hendricks’s smooth demeanour. “I wrote him a cheque on 26 September which was cashed the following day,” said the woman who wishes to remain anonymous. She became suspicious after two weeks. “He said someone from the Council will contact us and when that didn’t happen I phoned him,” she says. As in Chelin’s case Hendricks had one excuse after another over the following weeks, with no solar panels ever appearing. When she demanded her money back he at first tried to appease her. “The last time I tried calling him was last week. I just got tired of leaving voice messages,” she said. “I just want him to stop what he is doing. We are all very gullible at the moment. When we get our electricity bill we want to faint,” she said, explaining her willingness to buy into a suspicious bargain. “He has definitely done this before professionally. He does his rounds during the day, where he can target pensioners. Because you have to wait for a minimum of two months, many people only become suspicious a lot later. “He is very smooth and a very good conman which is sad,” she said. Hendricks is described as a fair skinned man, 1,70m tall and chubby with dark brown hair. He drives a white VW Jetta or Polo.

10t truck no match for her LEON STEENKAMP

Pulling a 10 tonne truck proved to be a mere entree for a local strongwoman who has set her sights on devouring an even bigger challenge.

Gavin Brown (Browns the Diamond Store) and committee members Vanessa Herbst, Lesley Walder, Gavin Wood, Wayne Abegglen and Michelle Ramage of the Canal Walk Foundation hand over the cheque for R105 000 which was raised at the golf day.

Canal Walk Golf Day a success Some of the top names in South African business turned out to support this year’s Canal Walk Golf Day. The annual event is hosted by the Canal Walk Foundation.

The Canal Walk Foundation was established in 2005 to support a full spectrum of education, humanitarian and cultural projects and initiatives that contribute to the upliftment, development and

empowerment of the community. This year the golf day, which was held at the Steenberg Golf Estate in Constantia, raised R105 000 which will help improve the lives of those less fortunate.

Nautical view of Mother City City Sightseeing Cape Town has launched a new canal cruise of the V&A Waterfront, to show the city from a different angle. The trip goes through South Africa’s only lock before stopping at the One&Only, City Lodge and the Harbour Bridge before arriving at the

Cape Town International Convention Centre. From this point there is an option to go on to one of the sightseeing buses to visit attractions such as Table Mountain and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens “Cape Town was founded as a harbour city and has a proud nautical

history. It makes sense that visitors and locals alike can now take the opportunity to cruise the calm waters of the canal and enjoy the breathtaking views of Cape Town,” says Claus Tworeck, CEO of City Sightseeing Cape Town. Contact the City Sightseeing offices on 021 511 6000.

Only three weeks after officially dipping her toes into the waters of strongwoman competition, Liesl Schoonraad (40), will hope to pull a plane. Schoonraad attempted the massive truck pull at Ratanga Junction on Saturday to create awareness around Cerebral Palsy (CP) and to advocate the benefits of exercise to the youth. After quickly strapping on the harness, Schoonraad caught some onlookers by surprise as she set off – pulling the truck at a blistering pace. “To be honest the 10 tonnes wasn’t much of a challenge. I was busy getting into position when I felt the truck come,” she said. Pulling the truck for 34,30 metres however wasn’t light work. “It’s never easy,” the out of breath mother of two said in response to presenter Kevin Abbott’s comment that she made it look easy. Schoonraad started training for this event just over seven months ago. “It’s been a long, hard struggle in the gym, but it has been worth it,” said Schoonraad, whose record for

leg presses currently stands at 640kg. “I am so overwhelmed with the support I received,” she said. She singled out her training partner and former South African Strongman Ettienne Uys for his help in achieving her goal. “I would have been flat on my face and in traction in hospital if not for Ettienne. There is a special technique involved and you can really injure yourself if you don’t do it the correct way,” she explained. Also supporting her from the sidelines was Ryan McConnachie, a good friend and CP sufferer who inspired Schoonraad’s awareness campaign. “It means so much to me to see the strength and power she has. “Liesl you are awesome,” McConnachie said afterwards. Schoonraad is not yet sure exactly what kind of aircraft she will be pulling in three weeks’ time as part of the Wings and Wheels Show that will be held at Ysterplaat Air Force Base on 9 and 10 December. “I am meeting with the guys from Ysterplaat on today for a photo shoot and will then test a couple of planes,” a very excited Schoonraad said on Monday. “As far as I know this will be a first both in South Africa and the world,” she said, adding that she would look at sinking her teeth into nothing less that 15 tonnes of machinery.

Gruelling swim for cancer op A local swimmer is one of nine novice open-water swimmers who will take to the icy Atlantic to tackle a gruelling double crossing between Bloubergstrand and Robben Island in a bid to raise funds for an 11-year-old girl with cancer.

to contribute towards Natalie’s Circle of Love campaign. The opportunity to help someone and know that our efforts will make a serious difference in someone’s life, is what drives us,” said Goodman of his swimming team. His team includes Table View resident Toni Enderli, co-founder of The Ripple Effect, an organisation that also raises funds through sport. Natalie, a Grade 5 Camps Bay Primary scholar, was diagnosed with the disease in January this year. She underwent emergency surgery to have part of the tumour, which was attached to her windpipe, removed. The giant tumour had however grown into her spine and doctors were unable to remove it completely without causing damage to her spinal cord and possible paralysis. After much research, she was referred to a specialist team of surgeons and oncologists at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The team, using state of the art technology, successfully removed the tumour in one

The second annual Turbo Swim of Courage, brainchild of swimmer and fundraiser, Martin Goodman, will this year support Natalie’s Circle of Love, a fundraising campaign for the medical treatment of Capetonian, Natalie Cohen, who suffers from chordoma, an aggressive and rare form of bone cancer. Following on the success of last year’s Swim of Courage – a Robben Island to Three Anchor Bay crossing which raised funds for brain tumour survivor Cameron Els – organiser Goodman announced plans for an even more challenging open water swim which will take place sometime at the end of November, weather dependant. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity

‘Famous’ recipe An enthusiastic cook from Milnerton Ridge is among a selected few whose recipe can be found in a popular food magazine. The Woolworths’ magazine Taste has produced its first ever readers’ issue (on sale now), which is made up of recipes submitted by the readers. The best ones were chosen and published in the magazine. Nicole Lear was among those whose culinary know-how was acknowledged by being featured in the magazine. Her recipe isn’t too complicated and, most importantly, truly delectable. “It is something I came up with. They tweaked it a little but it is an original recipe,” said Lear who studied cooking. “Cooking is a passion, that and baking,” she said with a smile.

piece, but to do so, part of her spine had to be removed too. Reconstruction of her spinal cord using bone taken from her right leg completed the groundbreaking surgery. Natalie will now wear a halo for three months which will hold her body together while the bone fuses and will then receive proton beam radiation to ensure that no part of the tumour is left behind. The cost of Natalie’s surgery, together with post operative treatment and proton therapy amounts to $250 000 (about R1 970 000). “We hope that South Africans will get behind this fantastic fundraising drive. This year’s event will be bigger. On the day of the swim we will also appreciate the public’s support at the beach.” More information about Natalie is available atwww.nataliecircleoflove.org. For more information on the swim, contact Martin Goodman on 082 825 2211 or visit the Swim of Courage Facebook page.

Local police shine The Milnerton Police Station was well represented at this year’s Western Cape Police Prestige Awards ceremony that was held in Newlands recently. Warrant Officer Daphne Dell came third in the Woman of the Year category which bought her a place to the nationals in Sun City this past weekend. Dell, who is also the station’s communication officer, was nominated in recognition of her involvement with the local community through a number of social projects. The station’s Serious and Violent Crimes Unit was also nominated in the category Operational Group of the Year. They were recognised for their good arrest record and convictions.

Why healthcare costs so much Many years ago, as a young reporter, I covered a meeting of the Medical and Dental Council. I remember it well for at that meeting I observed an important stage in the decline of medical ethics. The layman on the council proposed a motion to bar doctors from buying shares in drug companies. The argument was that doctors should choose the most appropriate drug for the patient and not the one that best served his share portfolio. The doctors dismissed his concerns and the motion was lost. That was the thin end of the wedge. Since then there have been all sorts of incentive schemes to encourage doctors to prescribe particular drugs. Naturally doctors will say they are not influenced but the fact is that the schemes exist because they work. Now, of course, it’s about prescribing expensive operations in five-star hospitals and, as far as I know, there is nothing to stop doctors buying shares in a particular hospital group. This is the thick end of the wedge. But, by and large, doctors are not the problem. The real villains are the account-

ants and the actuaries who have led the medical men and women astray, exploited them and turned medicine into a business that puts profits before health. Let me give you a small example. A doctor friend of mine used to do locum work in the casualty department of one of the better known private hospitals. He was a conservative doctor and the administrators soon noticed that when he was on duty the hospital pharmacy did less business. It was suggested that he should write more prescriptions. When he declined they found a more compliant doctor. The biggest problem, however, are the financial services companies that masquerade as medical aid schemes. Let me give you another example. If you are a private patient you can have a cataract operation done for about R10 000 an eye in an excellent clinic, but if you are on medical aid most of the firms will insist that the surgeon does the operation in a private hospital. That will add an-

other R10 000 to the bill. So we have a situation where the cost of treatment is being deliberately forced up. That results in a higher turnover and that, in turn, justifies higher premiums. The more expensive healthcare becomes the more money the medical aid schemes make. Of course the private hospitals do provide an excellent service but so they should. Over the years they have poached the best staff and this has helped to undermine the provincial hospitals. George Bernard Shaw got it right more than a century ago when he said the problem with medicine was that the doctor who was about to amputate your leg and earn 100 guineas for doing so was also the person who decided whether the leg needed amputation. That, said Shaw, was like making the hangman the judge and paying him per hanging. Nothing has changed except it’s not about amputation any more but R100 000 hip replacements.

Toutrekker presteer LYNNE MATTHYSEN

The office of the Boost Africa Foundation (BAF) located in Birkenhead Road, Waves Edge was recently broken into. “They took everything of value; our computer and printers that we use directly for our work with the children of Du Noon,” said Mary Mytting Dell, director of BAF, an organisation that assists children living in impoverished areas to stay in school through a number of initiatives. One of the items stolen was an office capacity black laser printer. “We used it to print over 600 worksheets/colouring sheets for our Boost Kidz Klub in Du Noon. The other was a office capacity colour printer where we printed their identity cards. We also lost our computer, scanner/ fax/printer, microwave and kettle. “The craziest of all, is that they also stole a small inventory of uniforms that had been donated to us,” Mytting Robbers broke open the door of the Boost for Africa head office Dell said. in Blouberg and made off with computer equipment.

A cute story book character will be travelling around the world to spread the important message of saving our struggling seas. Sunningdale resident and marine biologist Heidi de Maine is the author of the Abby’s Aquarium Adventures series. These books, which were listed among the Top 10 South African Children’s Books last year, feature the main character Abby. Abby is an aquarist at an aquarium who teaches children about marine life, life in an aquarium, and informs them about animal/marine careers as well as conservation. Says De Maine: “Through the book series, marine-related craft kits that I make, Facebook, articles in magazines, talks/ presentations and my blog I hope to make Abby a well-known marine ambassador.” Along with teaching children about marine life, De Maine hopes to promote a career in the area of marine biology among children. To show children the career options out there, De Maine is sending Abby around the world to visit different aquariums and

research facilities. “She will learn about their special projects and see day-to-day life in aquariums. Abby will get to meet researchers, teachers, field staff and anyone and everyone related to marine life,” De Maine explained. Abby (a soft toy) will visit each facility for a period of time, ranging from one day up to two months, depending on the circumstances – deep sea research vessels and sailing expeditions need her to stay with them for longer. “At each facility, she will be shown around and she’ll get to see what the people’s job entails, she’ll take photos and then write up her travelogue on her blog www.abby.co.za,” De Maine said. The miniature explorer has already been invited to 43 facilities around the world, from Canada to New Zealand. “When she comes back to South Africa, she’ll do the rounds here too.” Abby’s first adventure is a trip by post to Alaska where she will find out more about ocean acidification. “We just hope that the local postal service doesn’t lose Abbey en route,” De Maine said, but quickly added that she has a backup Abbey should things take a turn for the worst.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Black Tuesday for SA? Nelson Mandela once said, “A critical, independent and investigative press is the lifeblood of any democracy. The press must be free from state interference. It must have the economic strength to stand up to the blandishments of government officials.” Almost 18 years after South Africa showed the world that a peaceful transition in government is attainable; we now face the distinct possibility of sliding back into obscurity, if the Protection of Information Bill is passed in parliament. The health of a democracy is often measured by restrictions on media. The days of rotting in jail for upholding one of our most basic rights – the right to know – could become a reality once again. Since 1994, information deemed to be in the public interest were published without fear of persecution. Countless examples of this freedom permeated the press and contributed to numerous restless nights for those corrupted by power. Now we are at the crossroads. The significance of this bill cannot be overemphasised. A free press has played an invaluable role in bringing “untouchable” citizens to justice – Shabir Shaik, Jackie Selebi, Bheki Cele, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde. When sensitive information was leaked in the Apartheid years, the informant and the journalist or editor could well end up in jail, yet despite this restriction, some continued to defy this evil. In that period the country was rocked by a major political scandal involving the department of information, which was allegedly misappropriating State funds for secret projects. A taste of freedom has left us yearning for more. Or in Madiba’s words, “Let freedom reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement.”

Under a Cape Town City by-law passed in 2010, graffiti is illegal and can be reported to the Law Enforcement Anti-Graffiti Unit on 0800 222 771. The onus for cleaning the graffiti unfortunately rests with the property owner and if not cleaned off by them the City can organise the cleanup and bill the property owner accordingly. As one of our projects to assist in fighting petty crime, the Community Police Forum (CPF) in Parklands has decided to follow Rudi Giuliani’s broken window approach and eradicate graffiti from our sector. Volunteers have started with the cleanup of road signs, electricity boxes and small incidents of graffiti where possible, as well as

assisting property owners with larger occurrences. May I appeal to parents, teachers and school principals to please assist us by informing children that graffiti is not cool but rather the malicious damage of other people’s property. To those brainless adults who, like dogs lifting their legs on every second lamp pole, continue to perpetrate this mindless practice; people known as Gems, Dope, Jeb, Demo, One, Epo, Tekkies, Billy G and others you have caused thousands of rands of damage to the property of others and when we catch you it will be your turn to pay! Beware of this road scam Tuesday (15 November) at 13:30 I was driving in Bellville on Durban Road in the direction of the N1 highway. At a red robot, while waiting for the robots to turn green, the driver of the vehicle behind me (a white commercial van with orange adverts across the top) got out of his car and approached my window saying that I had petrol leaking from the back of my car. When the robot turned green I found a safe place to pull over (at the bus stop still in Durban Road) and he pulled behind me on that busy road, like a Good Samaritan who was assisting me out of a fix. I got out of my car and he inspected under my car and announced that there was a definite leak and that he would help me, quickly signalling that I should follow him. When we both got into our respective cars, he overtook me and turned immediately left at the approaching intersection assuming

that I would follow him. I ignored this stranger and proceeded straight. I went to the nearest petrol station and asked the petrol attendant to assist me in determining if I had a fuel leak under my car pointing at the exact location where the concerned driver had pointed. Two petrol attendants checked the bottom of my car and there were no leaks. This con artist was white, sounded Afrikaans and in mid-twenties. This is a scam aimed at misleading women travelling on their own. Had I accepted his assistance, he probably would have dispossessed me of my vehicle, stolen my bag and jewellery and most likely harmed me. It all happened very quickly! Women drivers on their own are soft targets and need to beware of this latest scam! IDALIA ASHBY Email

In answer to my question, “What’s the difference between good old fashioned highway robbery and the proposed new toll roads?” I was pleased to receive replies from the department of labour, the minister of police and minister of justice explaining to me that it was all a part of the government’s job creation scheme. Apparently, the unemployment rate for highway robbers is much higher than the national average in other robbery professions. Except for the occasional car hi-jacking, it was felt that this part of the robbery industry needed to be jacked-up (pardon the pun) as highway robbery has been in steady decline since the boom days of Dick Turpin & Co. Whenever I am held up by a toll road operative, they ask me to please pay up, shut up and accept this slight imposition with good grace. Seeing as Sanral has told me that I have no choice in the matter anyhow, I might as well accept this unnecessary and costly irritation as calmly as I can and try not to look them in the eye as they are robbing me. ERNIE GAY Milnerton

No time for recycling I had four black bags full of 1,5 litre clear plastic flavoured water bottles to recycle, all rinsed and clean. At Pick n Pay there were only containers for glass and paper! I went behind Bayside where there were only a few refuse bins which were half full of a mixture of plastic items. When I added my load, they were overflowing. This trip involved negotiating no fewer than six booms! To hell with recycling! My time is too valuable. As the Bloubergrant area has no plan in place for street collection, everything will simply go into my black bin and add to the landfill! Disappointing. COLIN Milnerton

Putting smiles on little faces MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Thirty four children with cleft lips and palates have just received the gift of smiling. They underwent life-changing facial reconstructive surgery from 14 tot 18 November at Tygerberg Hospital as part of “Smile Week”. The hospital, Vodacom and the Smile Foundation joined forces to make this initiative possible. Smile Foundation is an NGO that does facial reconstructive surgery free of charge for children from disadvantaged backgrounds with facial conditions. Through its partnership with academic hospitals in the country, Smile Foundation has helped about 800 children to date. Not only children with cleft lips and palates, but also children with ear conditions, some cranio-facial conditions, and burn wounds were operated on. On Tuesday 15 November, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille met the children who had surgery, as well as their parents. She was joined by Western Cape Minister of Health Theuns Botha. In her keynote address, Zille said the work done by the Smile Foundation and Vodacom is a great example of how the private sector can assist government in delivering quality healthcare to citizens. “Around 80 percent of the health budget is spent on diseases and injuries that are preventable and often a consequence of life-style choices. This means we do not have enough money to provide care and assistance to peo-

Botha added to this, saying: “I am so proud of this partnership where our hospital staff, specialists and nurses are joining hands with Vodacom towards a future generation of smiles. “This is a project that cannot be bought

with rands and cents but is borne out of compassion and goodwill.” Moira Gerszt, chief operating officer of the Smile Foundation, says there is no better Christmas present than a life-changing smile. “We are very excited that, through this partnership, we will be able to share smiles with the children of the Western Cape.” Through the Smile Foundation’s good work, backlogs in academic hospitals are alleviated, skills transfer is facilitated, as well as psychological help offered before and after surgery, supporting hospital infrastructure.

Schools already at full capacity With only three weeks left before the end of the school year, schools in Brackenfell, Durbanville, Delft and Kuils River are full to capacity. The Western Cape Education Department is wrapping up its preparations for the 2012 school year, which includes the finalisation of enrolments. Says Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for education minister Donald Grant: “The completion of enrolments for the following school year is imperative, as this determines

the number of staff that will be allocated to the particular school, the amount of furniture and stationery required and the number of learning materials such as textbooks.” According to her, this year’s early enrolment campaign has been a success, with high enrolment figures being captured throughout the province. “The greatest demand for enrolment has been in the metro region, with some areas reporting that they are full to capacity,” she says. While enrolment has been high in the Eden/Karoo, Overberg and

West Coast districts, there is still capacity in some of the schools. “We are expecting around 100 000 learners to qualify for enrolment in Grade 1 next year, and approximately 80 000 in Grade 8.” Bronagh says the department does expect some late enrolments next year, especially involving learners that have migrated from other provinces or have enrolled late for practical reasons, such as family relocation. “We have identified areas where there might be high levels of demand. These include Mitchells

Plain, Nyanga, Phillipi, Delft, Kuils River, Langa, Hanover Park, Manenberg and Oudtshoorn,” she says. According to Bronagh there are still parents in the province who have children entering Grade 1 or Grade 8, but who have not yet enrolled them for 2012 . “I strongly urge them to do so now ... enrolment at this stage may require some assistance by the WCED district offices. “Parents must not leave enrolment to the first day of the new school year. This places a massive

amount of pressure on our officials and distracts our schools from their task at hand – which is an on-time start to teaching and learning. It is simply unfair for parents who have failed in their responsibility to enrol their children in good time to lay the blame on the department and its officials at the start of the new school year.” Parents need to provide the following documents when submitting their applications: birth certificate; immunisation card; transfer card or the last report card for learners who have already been to school.

Family ties:

Showcasing the work of local artists and crafters, Studio 46 has reopened in Stadler Road, Bloubergstrand. Mother and daughter Louise van Rhyn (left) and Hettie Wainwright run the studio where they offer art commissions, art classes, craft classes, graphic design, personalised jewellery design and jewellery repairs. Here the two sit in front of Louise’s painting outside the studio. For more infor mation, visit www.studio46.co.za.

The Spectra Foundation is now starting with a new project to help unemployed people and those in need by training them to start their own business. For this purpose a few used laptops or computers and one or two projectors are needed. “If anyone of our caring community members knows where to acquire, ready to be discarded, but still in working order, laptops or computers, it would be greatly appreciated if you could contact us. “We are already up and running with this project, but are short of this most necessary equipment,” said Val Young, founder director of the Spectra Foundation.

The foundation is also appealing to people not to throw out their unwanted clothes, linen, shoes, bric-abrac, food or anything else which can still be used, but to donate it to the foundation. “Anything discarded by you is worth gold to someone else,” Young said. “The foundation has been very busy this year due to the extreme cold and financial conditions. With the Festive season approaching, many people just see it as another day without even basic necessities.” The demand is growing enormously every year and has certainly worsened this year, Young said.

“We have for the last few years been very reliant on caring members of the public to empty their cupboards of unwanted goods to make life more bearable for these underprivileged people, especially those exposed to the elements every night. “Among those whom we try to assist are people infected/affected by HIV/Aids, as well as families where there is drug and alcohol abuse. In some cases children have to go hungry as a result of their parents having fallen victim to these evils,” Young said. Contact Val Young on 084 033 6741 with enquiries or collection of used items.

The principal of Du Noon Primary, Honoria Jeremiah was equally glad for the book donation from the foundation.

Facelift in Factreton LYNNE MATTHYSEN

More than 156 backyard units in Factreton are set to get a facelift thanks to the City’s backyarder upgrade project. The project was launched by the executive mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille last week Wednesday. The units in Factreton will get enclosed flush toilets and upgraded electricity infrastructure once renovations get under way mid-2012. This pilot project was approved in late September, and according to the City, lessons learnt in Factreton will influence the expansion of this project to Langa and Hanover Park. “Currently, the housing waiting list in Cape Town sits at around 400 000 households, and due to the pressures of numbers and limited resources, housing delivery has been slow,” said De Lille. “This programme is the first of its kind in the country, and has involved consultation with all stakeholders, including City officials, representatives from all backyarder communities across the metro, and landlords. The units provide access to clean water, washing facilities and electricity.” According to De Lille, the City will continue to conduct engineering surveys of backyarder communities over the next five years, in order to assess the scale of services needed in each community.

Nicole Picksley with her first full Christmas box for animals.

Xmas boxes for animals CERRIN HENDRICKS

“Each Christmas our animals are enjoying being inside or having left-overs from the festivity, but there are many animals who are sitting in cages, or on the streets hungry.” Local Table View resident Nicole Picksley is looking to change this. She will be making Christmas boxes for the local animal shelters as a way of giving back to those members of the community without a voice. “I believe these charities have worked hard through the year to try provide shelter, food, love and homes for the many neglected animals, so I would like the community to give back,” said Picksley. All donations of anything animal related (food, shampoo, blankets, towels, bowels, kennels, leashes) are welcome, and can be second-hand. “Our first box is complete by the generous donations given.” Contact Nicole on 072 548 2059.

Marius Scott and Gillian Castle shortly after he proposed to her during a recent trip to New Zealand.

Cup proposal in NZ LEON STEENKAMP

A wedding proposal was the cherry on top for a local couple who won a trip to watch the Rugby World Cup live in New Zealand. Gillian Castle from Flamingo Vlei was overjoyed when she heard she had won the Heineken competition. “I decided to take my boyfriend of two years, Marius Scott, with me,” said Castle who works as a wardrobe supervisor. Although not as fierce a rugby supporter as Gillian, Scott was even more excited about the trip as he was planning something special. “With Gillian’s help I have become a rugby fan, but she is the one that jumps on the couch and cheers on the guys. “I was planning on proposing to her in December but when we won this competition it was the ideal opportunity,” Scott said of his plans to pop the big question on Waiheke Island. He bought the ring a couple of weeks before their departure and hid it in his toolbox in the garage knowing it is the last place that his fiancée-to-be would snoop around. “The garage is off limits for her,” he said laughing. The couple was part of a tour group of 25 people. Castle recalls the special day in great detail. “Tuesday 18 October started out with breakfast at the hotel and then a bus trip down to the port for a helicopter trip to Waiheke Island which was just spectacular,” she said. When the group arrived on the island they boarded a bus for a guided trip. “The island is peaceful, lush and quaint and it appears that time hasn’t passed there since the 70s,” Castle said. The first stop-off was at Stonebridge for some wine tasting, followed by a visit to Wild on Waiheke for beer tastings. “After this we were split into two teams for some archery and laser pigeon shooting which we managed to do in between downpours. “Our team ended up having homemade gingerbeer and rum to keep the chills away but proved to make shooting a little more challenging! After our scores were tallied our team had lost. I blame it on the delicious rum,” Castle says with a smile. The group then moved on to Mudbrick Vineyard, a wine farm situated on top of a hill with amazing panoramic views of the

vineyard, the island and Auckland. “Tony our local guide told us that just six months before he had got married there,” Castle said. Because of the rain, the group went straight into the restaurant and sat down where Castle spent the next 30 minutes chatting to Tony about the details of his wedding day. “I was so engrossed in Tony’s story, that I hadn’t noticed that Marius had been gone for a while,” she says. Tony was supposed to get married on the roof deck of the restaurant but had to move it to the cellar because of the rain. “I was looking for a nice spot to propose and at Mudbrick there are so many, but the view from the deck above the restaurant was perfect,” he said. When Scott went inside and told his girlfriend that the rain had stopped and that he wanted to show her something, she didn’t suspect a thing. As she was getting up one of their tour friends jokingly asked whether Scott was going to propose. “I went a bit cold, when Rob said that, but I kept my cool,” Scott said adding that luckily Castle remained in the dark. “I made a point of not telling anyone in the tour group fearing that they might let something slip,” he said. “I was completely unaware of Marius’s intentions or of how nervous he was. I was too busy jabbering on about Tony’s stories of his wedding,” Castle said. “He took me onto the roof deck of the restaurant which I thought was to show me the views from up there. While we were standing there arm in arm and taking it all in he suddenly stood in front of me, took my hand and went down on one knee and said: ‘Gillian Castle, will you do me the honour of marrying me?’” She was so surprised she started giggling. “Of course I said yes, but at first I giggled at the sound of him using my full name but also from the surprise and nervousness.” Scott admits there was an awkward second or two. “There I am down on one knee, very emotional, tears in my eyes and she is laughing at me,” he said laughing in fake disgust. “But when she realised what was going on, it was all good.” The couple broke the news to the rest of the group and were showered with congratulations with plenty of photos taken. “It was amazing to have everyone so genuinely happy for us.” They hope to get married early next year.

Hierdie towerbestanddeel is filodeeg. Herhaal twee maal, drie velle in totaal. Vir meer inligting, skakel Louise by 021 591 8391.

Busking in the sun: On 29 October, the Elkanah House Grade 10 Dra matic Arts stu dents were gi ven a busking task at the Schoolyard Market. After studying street theatre, they had to research and decide on an act which they would per form to passersby. privileged children between the ages of four and six and equip them with the knowledge and strength needed to tackle the mainstream schooling system. Tickets cost R30 at the door or R50 for the whole weekend. For more information, visit the EduRock event and group on Facebook.

City and GrandWest ‘love kids’ The City of Cape Town and GrandWest Casino will host a charity concert titled Love Our Children on 15 December to raise funds for the Mayoral Special Fund. The top three finalists of the SA Pop Idols 2011 competition, winner Dave van Vuuren, Crushanda Forbes and Mark Haze, will perform alongside Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels and comedian Kurt Schoonraad at the concert. The Mayoral Special Fund is the City’s charity fund to assist victims of emergencies or disasters, indi-

viduals or organisations experiencing hardships, and to support causes that promote the City’s values. Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille says the concert will boost the City’s efforts to assist Capetonians going through difficult times. “This fund is one of many resources relied on to build a caring City by helping those people who need our help the most. “My office is inundated with requests for financial assistance for worthy causes by individuals and organisations doing an incredible

job to build a more caring City. Many of these requests are from poor families struggling to bury their loved ones or organisations taking care of children with special needs. The proceeds of the concert will go a long way to enabling the City to make a difference in the lives of deserving individuals,” said De Lille. The concert will take place at the Grand Arena on Thursday 15 December at 20:00. Tickets at Computicket from R180 for standing to R200 for retractable seating.

The Arch spreads cheer Christmas came early for 22 children at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital when Archbishop Desmond Tutu arrived to hand out presents. Tutu’s laughter rippled down the corridors as he made his way to the children, who were eagerly awaiting him. “While they are not well, they are still joyous,” said Tutu, who together with his daughter, Mpho, handed out presents to each child. “We have come here to spread a bit of joy, but we’ve got so much in return,” he added. Ten-year-old Lorenzo Jansen thanked the Archbishop for the visit and then asked if he could touch his face. Lorenzo became blind after developing a brain tumour at the age of five. Tutu was clearly moved by his warmth and laughter, saying he had “a fantastic spirit”. The Archbishop Emeritus also lauded Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, calling it “a wonderful institution” and said it was wonderful that mothers were allowed to stay with their children while they were in hospital. “I was in hospital when I was three years old after a burn wound. It was traumatic being alone at such a young age. Here the children feel that someone is with them. It reduces the trauma and increases their chances of getting better.” Tygerberg Children’s Hospital communications officer, Laticia Pienaar, said the visit had been a real boost for the children. “The Archbishop brings so much energy with him and has a passion for giving to others.” The presents were given to Tutu in honour of his 80th birthday. He had asked that instead of giving him gifts, they should earmark them for various causes, including the children at the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, of which he is Patron.

Vir navrae, skakel André by 082 614 0263.

‘No violence’ event begins Women of the Atlantis community will be marching in support of the No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign on 24 November. The event, which will kick off the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign, will see women march from the local municipal building to the magistrate’s office. This year the community of Atlantis will also be treated to their very own Christmas lights. The colourful lights will be switched on, on 16 December by a seven-year-old cancer survivor. Television and radio personality Soli Philander as well as a host of other well-known actors and entertainers will perform on the day. The organisers are also raising funds to feed and give some 1 700 children a gift at the event. The importance of 16 Days of Activism was highlighted by an incident last week when an eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 15-year-old cousin. Similar cases of abuse and sexual violence against women and children are often reported in Atlantis.

‘Ecocentre popularity growing’

Learners of CBC St John’s School with Mr ADT, the security company’s mas cot, and Darin the Magician.

ADT says ‘be safe’ ADT Security recently held a talk for CBC St John’s School to teach the pupils the importance of staying safe. The talk took place as an interactive entertainment show, with ADT mascot Mr ADT giving the advice. The show touches on current issues that many children face at home, school or in the outside world. This included learning the dangers of firearms and what to do in the event of an emergency. Lessons learnt during the talk included: . Not all strangers are criminals, but it is not possible to tell simply

by someone’s appearance, so be vigilant and report behaviour that makes you uncomfortable. . Firearms, knives and other weapons are not toys and should only be handled by adults when not locked away in a safe. . It does not matter how small you are, you can act to save lives in an emergency such as a car hijacking or home invasion. . Be careful when you are around other people’s dogs or pets, if they do not know you or if you tease them, they could bite. . Always know who you should go to in an emergency and memorise contact numbers for the police and emergency services.

The Intaka Island Environmental Education Centre is aiming to reach 20 000 visitors a year. The centre is on the fast track to realising this goal, and the numbers of visitors in the first nine months of this year are 44 percent higher than last year. Construction of the eco-centre has now been completed with the addition of wooden viewing decks spanning the water. The centre has also been equipped for students, including a microscope which can be projected onto a screen. Located in the middle of Century City, Intaka Island is home to nearly 120 different bird species, 70 of which can be regularly seen. The seven habitats on the island are also home to roughly 177 indigenous plant species. Development of the centre began all the way back in 1996, with the aim to get rid of all the alien vegetation in the area and to replace it

with indigenous plants. Now the island serves to educate the public about the importance of conserving our indigenous species. More than 100 schools have been

contacted directly in the past couple of months and bookings have picked up considerably with the eco-centre being close to fully booked until the end of the year.

The Intaka Island Environmental Centre is nearing their aim of 20 000 visitors a year.

Dumping costs City money Illegal dumping is a costly exercise. So says Clive Justus, chairperson of Subcouncil 4, who urged residents during the subcouncil meeting in Parow last week to report illegal dumping. “The solid waste management department has reaffirmed its commitment to keeping Cape Town’s built and natural environment clear of waste,” he said. According to Justus, last month alone the department issued fines amounting to almost R100 000 – the

majority of which were for the illegal dumping of builders’ rubble and tyres. Some of the fines issued were as high as R2 500. Cleaning up illegal dumping is very costly, he said. “A clean environment is an investment in the future and it clearly contributes to our quality of life. I therefore make an earnest appeal to all residents to be vigilant and report all instances of illegal dumping. Please provide details such as the vehicle registration numbers

and the date, time and place of transgressions. “This enables the City to issue fines and compel the transgressors to remove the dumped waste,” he said. . Residents can report details of dumped material and request dumped material to be removed by calling the City’s customer care line on 0860 103 089 or 021 400 6157 during office hours or send a fax to 021 400 4302 or send an email to wastewise@capetown.gov.za.

Spanne verloor ondanks 100’s SAREL BURGER

Paddle power:

Bianca Beavitt from the Blouberg Surf Lifesaving Club and Mil nerton Canoe Club won the Brian’s Kayaks Mellerware Oceana Race that took place at Granger Bay on Sunday in a time of 1:20:46. Beavitt said afterwards it was great to win the race and admitted that she has been struggling to juggle her study commitments and trying to get back to full fitness. Graeme Solomon (Peninsula) won the Elite men’s category in 1:06:29, fol lowed club mates Jayden AlfordLoots (1:06:38), and Dominic Notten (1:07:59)

Beste atleet:

Kampioene:

Team strategy pays off at finish LEON STEENKAMP

There wasn’t much room for movement but the strategy of the Brothers Sport/ Focus team paid off giving them the top spot in this year’s Tiletoria West Coast Express Cycle Race. Leonardo van Onselen managed to cross the finish line a split second before Matthew Wentworth in the sprint to the finish during the men’s Elite category in the 85km race. “We were out of here quite fast, with the speed fairly high,” Van Onselen said after the race. The riders remained bunched as they peddled down the R27. Just after the Atlantis turn-off three riders launched a break-away attempt. “About 10 kilometres later we caught up with them again. The wind wasn’t much of a factor this year. The wind we had, was at our backs during the last 30km of the race which helped. The light rain we had close to Atlantis played a bigger role,” Van Onselen said. Soon thereafter other riders broke away from the bunch, among them Van Onselen’s team mate Riaan Kemp.

“About 10km before the finish we caught up with them again,” said Van Onselen adding that this flat race makes breaking away from the bunch very difficult. “When we caught up to the front riders we tried to retain control of the group of some 30 riders. We did this by having someone from our team regularly launching breakaways. This helped in keeping the speed fast.” In the end it was team mates Kemp and Chris Esch who paved the way for Van Onselen’s sprint to the finish. It is not the first time that the rider from Stellenbosch scales to the top spot on the podium. Apart from his success in this – the eighth instalment of the race – Van Onselen also tasted victory in 2004. The race and funride saw a total number of some 1 300 entries. There were two incidents on the route where cyclists fell. One cyclist was taken to hospital to receive stitches in his calf, but was back in time to enjoy the festivities at the prizegiving. “We had a very good turnout, considering the weather and I believe it is because of the good prizes and because the people know that the money goes to a non profit organisation,” said Mike de Kock of Tiletoria who helped organise the race.

Inviting very strong men The Cape Town Strongman Group will be hosting a competition in Brackenfell this coming weekend. The competition will take place on Saturday (26 November) in the parking area of the Pick n Pay Hypermarket in Brac-
