This work was composed for the highSCORE Music Festival, and was premiered by Quartetto Indaco in Pavia, Italy on August 5th, 2014 Instrumentation: Violin 1 Violin 2 Viola Violoncello Duration: ca. 5:10 Program Note: The title of this piece refers to a mental state in which distortions of memory can cause confusion between fact and fction and, in fact, lead an individual to confabulate new memories to replace lost ones. In composing the work, I was drawn to fnding tenuous, even imaginary, connections between quotations from multiple, diverse sources. These quotations, all somehow misremembered, make up the entirety of the musical discourse, which alternates temperamentally between grandiose paranoia and dreamy forgetfulness. Performance Notes: – Accidentals apply for the duration of a measure and all trills are half-steps. – Dashed arrows indicate a continuous change in mode of playing (e.g. senza vibrato to molto vibrato). – All glissandi begin on the frst indicated note and last the entire length of the gesture. Headless stems are occasionally provided to show beat structures underlying glissandi. – “X” time signatures indicate non-metrical time. A general length for these measures is given in seconds and points of coordination are indicated with a vertical dashed line. – A horizontal line extending from a note head in non-metrical time indicates a held pitch for the duration of the line. – Boxed fgures should be repeated freely, and extemporaneously, for the duration of the extending arrow.
