Nestled in the rolling acres on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County, the city of Pomona strikes a balance between rural charm and urban excitement. Our site, located on 2nd street in Downtown Pomona, is situated within this balance at the culmination of the historic Pomona Arts Colony and its art walk. Initiated by the urban concepts of Millard Sheets in 1962 and officially recognized by the city in 1994 after its growth in the early 90’s, the project site employs the ideas of self-discovery and community participation that are utilized within the preexisting arts colony. A strong community is best made by the joining of strong individuals. To nurture its growth, the project site takes the community on a journey of self-discovery through our concept of Personal Wayfinding, an ongoing process of three elements: Learning, Reflecting and Healing. This process of Wayfinding represents the journey of the Black Community, meditating upon itself and the two histories it is situated between: its American Origins and its African Origins. North of 2nd Street, the Veneration of Life emphasizes human experience and houses the Precolonial African portion of the museum complex. This contrasts the South and its emphasis on personal reflection with the Veneration of Spirit and the African American museum portion. Both sides culminate at the Plaza of Unification, where the space of 2nd street has been reimagined as a central plaza that celebrates the joining of the community. This culmination represents the idea that true Healing is something found in the space between the dichotomies of the self.

Steampunk is subgenre of science fiction that investigates the aesthetics of a universe that continued to rely on the power of steam as a main energy source. Designs within this subgenre often entail taking known technology from reality and reimagining them in a 19th century Industrialist, steam powered manner. Fish Punk uses this aesthetic as the design basis for a desktop lamp. Since steampunk in essence can be seen as a deconstruction of the history of civilization, the design deconstructs the aesthetic understanding of a lamp by infusing it with the image of a fish, which can be associated with the water used to power steam engines. All materials used for the lamp (besides the socket and bulb) were recycled and chosen to fit the desired aesthetic, including lightly rusted steel square tubing and copper sheet metal. These parts I then assembled by hand with a rivet gun and TIG welder.
