≤ About Ardoise PTF Ardoise PTF was born out of research begun with the Charente typeface created in 1999. The latter typeface, designed for the daily La Charente Libre, met the specific needs of newspapers, including low contrast and straightforward forms, much like Franklin Gothic. An extension to normal widths was developed from 2006 by Jean François Porchez and rematerialised in 2010 for the redesign of the magazine Pèlerin. The addition of further weights, including italics, to complete the family was followed by an expansion taking in condensed sets for the public launch at Typofonderie a few months later. b Standard ☜

Ardoise, inspired by the demanding priorities of newsprint, revives an interest in simple shapes characterised by poise and tension. Ardoise PTF and its 45 fonts could be considered as a homage to Antique Olive, but that is an unintended result, probably due to a longstanding admiration for Roger Excoffon. Ardoise, in fact, has a purity and dynamism to its design that gives it a striking elegance while demonstrating excellent readability. Its sturdiness virtually immunises it against distortion. Each font features a full glyph set covering most Latin languages, not to mention every imaginable typographic need from small caps and various sets of figures to dingbats & so on. Finally, a few alternates glyphs (a, c, g, l) offer the possibility to subtly change the overall character of a text setting.

✉ The tension in gesture L’Ardoise PTF est né d’une recherche débutée avec la publication du caractère Charente en 1999. Ce dernier, dessiné pour le quotidien La Charente libre, répondait aux besoins d’un caractère de presse écrite, avec ses faibles contrastes, ses formes franches, à l’instar du Franklin Gothic auquel on peut le comparer. Le projet d’extension à des chasses normales a été développé par Jean François Porchez à partir de 2006 et s’est concrétisé en 2010 pour la nouvelle formule du magazine Pèlerin. La finalisation de toutes les graisses de l’Ardoise et de leurs italiques, début 2010, fut suivie de la conception des séries étroites pour le lancement public chez Typofonderie quelques mois plus tard. ☞ Standard ☜
L’Ardoise, s’il s’inspire du meilleur des caractères de presse, renouvelle le goût pour des formes simples et tendues. L’Ardoise PTF et ses 45 séries pourraient être considérés comme un hommage à l’Antique Olive, mais de manière imprévue, fruit de l’admiration de longue date que son auteur voue à Roger Excoffon. L’Ardoise, en effet, possède une pureté de dessin et une dynamique qui lui confèrent une élégance singulière tout en faisant preuve d’une excellente lisibilité. Sa grande robustesse l’installant quasiment à l’abri de la déformation. Chaque fonte dispose d’un jeu de glyphes qui couvre la plupart des langues latines, tous les aspects des besoins typographiques tels petites capitales, divers types de chiffres, dingbats, etc. Par surcroît, des variantes de glyphes (a, c, g, l) peuvent enrichir l’image d’un texte composé.
