tape art Class work 1 (Tape Art) The relationship between 2D and 3D
Title : Floral Wreath
Medium : mixed media masking tape (washi tape), iron wire

Nasa Funahara, a senior at Musashino Art University majoring in oil painting. Her hobbies, include napping, arts and crafts and collecting masking tape. So she created a series of collage artwork, which is used many colorful washi tapes. She replicated famous paintings like, Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers by those tapes.
I have been though of create a collage artwork by masking tape, but it is not a good method to present ‘3D’, so I gave up this idea finally. I still have been inspired by these artworks, these colorful color schemes. At last, I matched some same color tone masking tape to create MY works.

tape art
When I noticed the topic is exploring ‘The relationship between 2D and
3D’ through tape, firstly I concern about the masking tape’s characteristics: sticky, easy to change and cut. So I decided to use 2D items, iron wire and colorful washi tape, to make a 3D item, floral wreath. After finished class exercise 1 (20 ways to explore tape), I understood the plasticity of tapes. I tried to stick the washi tape on iron wires, then tick together one by one, and twist the iron wire as different radian, to be more natural, more similar as actual leaves of floral wreath.

WAVE
Woodcarving really
is a challenge for me, as I haven’t tried it before. But when classmates though about items to present ‘soft’, thought of some pictures kept running through my mind : sky and sea. I found some photos that I have taken, then I chose ‘sea wave’ as my woodcarving’s theme. Keep paring different depth pits, grinding smoothly for many times. Finally, I pared pits on all fours sides of raw cuboid to show up the smoothly sea waves, not only an ocean floor. To make those pits stand out, I drew lines around them by 4B pencils. ‘Smooth’ is the best way to represent ‘soft’. Therefore, I focus on smoothly of the ‘wave’.

Reference
The sea wave and wood grain made me imagine about the style of ‘ukiyo-e’.
So I drew the lines depends on the raw wood grains.

Comment : the line of pencil aren’t clear enough. Can color the wood.
That’s why I use acrylic to color the wood.

After coloring the wood, the layers are much standout and more looks like ‘sea wave’.

materiality1 Class work 3 (Materiality I - A4 paper) Use an raw A4 paper to create work
Title : Open it
Medium : paper original A4 size
20
I tried to create a simple but sur-
prised work. When I fold up, it just likes a simple paper. But when I open, it can stand up like a pop-up book, a picture comes out : a bird is flying in the sky. A ray of light influx to the paper, there are some shadows come out. This whole picture and special effect make the audience feel ‘hope’. If you close the paper, it is just a piece of paper. You can’t get any idea and feel despair. But if you pump up your courage to open it, it can show you another feeling; a hopeful picture can surprise you, just like if we think in other angle, the feelings and result will be different.

Title : Goldfish
Medium : barbed wire
ď Ź
When I thinking what I can create with the bared wire at the beginning, I
wanted to continue my wood carving work --- sea wave. I spread out the barbed wire and make the curve the surface of sea wave. But I have other idea during the process. I pinched a fishtail, body, head, and create a whole goldfish gradually.

ď Ź This artwork was displayed near the kindergarten, the park which next to it. Why I created this artwork, it should tell from my own work experience. ď Ź I have been a part-time kindergarten art teacher for half-year, but I just left these few weeks. When I was working at school, my boss would have briefing and de-briefing sessions for us before and after every lesson. They have given many guidelines to us. ď Ź They have a special term that I have hear before : apple to apple. It means that children should copy the same thing what we have taught them, they should draw the same items, shapes and patterns; paint in the same color; draw in same compositions.
children draw the same things in lessons
32
To sum up, they should copy the sample. If they draw some additional images or paint the wrong color, as an art teacher, we should stop them immediately, and wipe away to correct the right items. We should confirm it mainly same as our samples. You may ask, why we need to be so serious to the kindergarten children? They are all come from the parents’ requirements. Some parents have been complained to school when they received the unexpected artwork from their children. ‘Why my children’s work doesn’t same as the others classmate’s work?’ , ‘Why their work look so pretty, but my children’s work seems so ugly?’…… To fulfill all the parent’s requirements, school should change the teaching method to children. I though this situation is very strange. In my opinion, art need creative, especially to the kindergarten children. This behave will limited the imagine space to them, so I would like put this issue into my artwork.
33
final work The concept of my artwork, is collect some children’s’ drawings. I will give some guidelines to the children : draw a apple; it could be any color, shape, patterns; you can add anything you want. They can feel free to draw. After collected their drawings, I will put them all in a ‘children’s head’, a paper mache work. The drawings seem throw out from its head, its represented the creativity of the children. Then I will put a realistic apple in front of the children’s head. So the realistic apple and the creative ‘apples’ have made a huge contrast. If parents want their children to create artworks, let their creative juices flow, they should not limited their children.

The artwork is about children and parents, so the school, Eduhk, The Education University of Hong Kong, is a suitable place I can locate my artwork, as this is a educate to the next generation school. Why I don’t put it the outside kindergarten because of the dangerous factor. To be more specific to display at school, I found a suitable venue : The EdUHK Early Childhood Learning Centre. So I put my artwork near there, hope the parents, childhood education workers can take a look this installation, and have some reflections about this issue.

Reference artist 1) Abigail Brow
Abigail Brown, a textile artist and freelance illustrator/print designer based in London, UK. He loves to create animals’ masks with Nordic style. They are cute, just like animals that come from fairy tales.
I like his style, which is instead to be childlike. So I add this element to my artwork, especially those paper maches: the children’s head and apple. On sculpting and coloring my works, it also inspired by his artworks. Raw style can much similar to children, that’s why I did not take a high finish to make the coarse textures.

Reference artist 2) Eric Carle Eric Carle is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for very young children. Many people may have read ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ this storybook before since they were children. This is a childhood for us. Besides, the artworks in this storybook can also be used in art lesson, as create caterpillar pictures only using some simple materials and techniques : tissue paper collage. So the techniques are really funny and interesting and give some inspiration for me to create artwork about children. Some childish style are inspired by him.

Dream Collector
‘The marble game we played when we were kids is now becoming a collection of your dreams and thoughts. We now use translucent paper to create marbles that can carry your dream and thoughts, and can be viewed when placed inside a gigantic bear.’
Collective work is a good art form to impress people and express the message to them directly. That’s why it inspired me to invite audience to participle in my artwork.

‘When it comes to architecture in Hong Kong, our main concern is about size and money wise. We seldom think of the quality, not to mention the goal of architecture is to build a real “home” that we can live with contentment. AaaM constructs a space with our mother language and local culture, where architecture is the focus as well as a medium to represent the inseparable part of our daily life.’
