Welcome to Tanzania! You’ve made a great decision coming to visit one of the most ecologically diverse countries on Earth. From the worldfamous plains of the Serengeti, to the dense jungles of the Udzungwa Mountains, this is a country absolutely teeming with wildlife. The unfortunate news is that this wildlife is under threat. Many of Tanzania’s iconic species, including elephants, giraffes and lions, have seen their populations
decline dramatically over the past decades. While efforts to protect Tanzania’s ecological heritage have been under way since at least WKH WLPH RI 7DQ]DQLD·V À UVW 3UHVLGHQW Julius Nyerere, pressure from human populations in wildlife-rich areas, along with the widespread poaching of elephants, rhinos, pangolins, hippos and many other species poses a serious threat to the continent's wildlife.

The good news is that by visiting Tanzania, you’ve already taken an important step to help protect wildlife. Income from tourism makes up a massive 17% of Tanzania's GDP, representing thousands of jobs dependent on the country’s wildlife. Through the continued growth of sustainable tourism, strong economic incentives are put in place for communities to protect natural areas surrounding themselves and the single greatest driver of poaching – poverty – is alleviated through the injection of money that accompanies tourism. Even better news is that Tanzania’s wildlife saw numerous victories in 2016. China announced it would end its domestic ivory trade, closing off the single largest market for illegal ivory - much of which comes from Tanzania. The government of Hong Kong announced a similar ban, meaning that world’s largest ivory markets will close in the coming years. The repercussions of this have already been seen in Tanzania. In January, the Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania led a march of more than 500 people in Dar es Salaam in support of elephants. This march, which included WildAid ambassadors Ben Pol, a Tanzanian R&B artist, and Jacqueline Mengi, a clothing designer and former Miss Tanzania, embodied the growing momentum to stop poaching and protect the country’s wildlife.

In the majestic and diverse Tanzania, planning your holiday, safari or even a bucket list destination can get overwhelming and sometimes tricky as you juggle between cheapest fares, best tour operators and an unforgettable H[SHULHQFH +HUH DUH RXU WRS À YH TXLFN WLSV WR JHW \RX VWDUWHG
Plan in advance
There are over a hundred destinations to explore, a thousand hotels to stay in and a ten thousand tour operators to appease you. Planning your holiday three months prior is helpful to get reasonable airfares and hotel rates. Advance planning is advisable especially for your safaris to game parks, climbing Mt.Kilimanjaro or visiting a busy tourist destination. Do an online research and check for reviews.
Look for budget accommodation
Tanzania may get expensive as a travel destination and accommodation can be one of the major costs. As much as the tour operator may lure you to book with the big names, there are plenty of lodges that provide a great experience. Zanzibar has several beaches lodges for instance and give a wonderful experience for as little as $50. Set your budget goals and do the research.

Amboni Caves
Exploring the of the Jurassic Age
Forming the largest chain of its kind in East Africa, the Amboni Caves are the most extensive limestone formations, dating 150 million years back and covering an area of 234 km2. Situated near the town of Tanga, today three out of six caves are open for site seeing visits, offering interesting explorations of bats, narrow pathways, formation of limestones and spiritual myths.
It is believed these caves were submerged below the ocean 20 millions of years ago and the salt water gradually carved out these passaged ways in the rocks.

ITENRARY It is advisable to visit the caves with a tour guide owing to the depths and seclusion that often confuses new visitors. The caves are a fascinating historical site and various stories entail around this attraction. A guided tour makes for an interesting day trip for around three hours.
Walk in and around the caves for one and a half kilometers of stretch to explore limestone formations and listen to narratives, the caves also being the hiding places for the locals. Various formations resemble the shape of a ship, crocodile, an elephant, map of Africa, Statue of Liberty and a head of a male lion. Interesting encounters with the bats and visiting the chamber of spirits (Mzimuni) where local women worship to spirits.
The rays of lights that emerge in and out of the caves are an overwhelming part of the tour. The views of towering formations in the caves are an admiration. Walking through squeezes while getting treated to views of incredible formations makes the visit worth it.

About Dar es Salaam is the commercial capital and the largest city of Tanzania. It is situated on the east coast of the Indian Ocean with a harbor line forming a favorable trading port. Accommodation One can choose to stay in small lodges or mid-range to upscale hotels. The minimum cost can be Tsh 20,000 per night in Kariakoo or City Centre. Tour Drive and Mbezi have international hotels that charge in US dollars, however budget accommodations can be found too. YMCA and Airbnb are affordable options for backpackers. Transport Dar es Salaam has two airports. Terminal RSHUDWHV FKDUWHU Ă LJKWV DQG 7HUPLQDO LQWHUQDWLRQDO DQG D IHZ ORFDO Ă LJKWV Travelers can rely on taxis for commuting to and fro most area including airport. 7D[L IDUHV DUH Ă&#x20AC; [HG IURP WKH DLUSRUW DQG within the city, the basic fare starts from Tsh 5,000/-. Public buses are affordable but not always comfortable. The DART bus service is reliable however packed by passengers. Minimum fare is Tsh 650/-. Two-wheelers (Boda Boda) are the fastest commuting options but are not always safe, starting Tsh 2,000/- . Car rentals are available from various private companies. Bajaji/ rickshaws mostly operate in areas of Msasani with negotiable rates starting Tsh 2,000/Weather The temperature is relatively stable with humid climatic conditions. June to October is the dry and cool season with expected rainfall. The temperatures start rising from November to February and monsoon sets in from March to May. January is the hottest month of the year. Shopping Markets are diverse and interesting
to explore. Souvenirs such as clothes and accessories can be bought at the Masai Market in Slipway, affordable hand-made paintings at Tinga Tinga Oysterbay, wood carvings in Mwenge and textile market on Uhuru Street. Prices are negotiable in these markets. Many hotels also have curio shops that sell same goods at a higher rate. Visitors can also look for Tanzanite jewelry shops in Masaki and India Street in the city. People The people of Dar es Salaam are warm, friendly and hospitable. Muslims, Christians, Hindus and other traditional beliefs live together in harmony and are welcoming to a large group of expats who make Dar their home away from home. Clothing Light cotton & summer wear is ideal on the most of the year tropical climate. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advisable to keep an umbrella for the rainy season. There are no strict rules for clothing in Dar es Salaam and the dress code is casual for most restaurants, pubs and public places Food One can never run out of food options in Dar.
