Derek Harris From the Chairman— February already? Can you believe it! The lone periwinkle in my garden – blue because he thought perhaps he’d got his seasons muddled – has now been joined by a corps de ballet of snowdrops, and pale mauve crocuses defy the cold. Which brings me to three points: first, I must thank Ray for his Gardening Column last month. Were his ears burning? They should have been given the number of compliments flying round. Second, since In the bleak midwinter, it’s not just frosty winds that make moan in the church, it is suggested that we make trial of holding our meeting in the Assembly Rooms, though tables will be fewer to accommodate more chairs. Happen. And that brings me to point three: Teas. There’s no getting away from it: the present system of a Groups rota doesn’t work, for a variety of sound reasons. Therefore, are there any kind souls among you – perhaps willing to undertake a responsibility but not wanting to be a committee person or Group Leader – who would volunteer to form the Refreshments Team?? KU3A in its entirety would fall at your feet in gratitude.

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

Thank you to the Group Leaders who have returned their Half Year Finance Reports.

Bookworms — At our last meeting, we watched the film of "The Book Thief", which was topical as the story is set at the beginning of the Second World War. It tells the story of Leisel who was fostered by Hans and Rosa Hubermann. We all enjoyed the film, although it had a very sad ending. We are now reading "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time". Contact: Pauline Parkin 01536 799 197

Card Making 1 — The next meetings will be on March 3rd and 4th.

Busy Needles — Seasonal setbacks notwithstanding, we continue to knit away, sew up blankets and complete donated, unfinished items for babes on an industrious (if not industrial) scale.

Contact: Mary Earl 01536 522 456 Card Making 2 — January started with all of us making a weaving card from paper. I even made one from a recycled Christmas card. Having mastered that skill we created weaving cards using ribbons. On a shopping trip I purchased some decorative bows, we then 'borrowed' the idea and made their own. Finally we finished the morning making pyramid cards. Oh I so wished I knew where I got them from? March meeting is on the 9th ladies (as agreed) and it has been arranged to be at Anne's. Note different venue and different week. Contact: Marian Tucker 01536 510 354 mariantucker1954@gmail.com

We had a super thank-you letter from Wood Green – another box of warm wear for woofers and cushioning for cats is ready to post. Our beginners are making great progress, too. Donations of wool, squares or unfinished projects continue to be most acceptable. Thanks to all who have thus supported us already. Canals & Waterways — There is a change of venue for our February meeting. Mary Matts from Foxton Locks will be giving us a talk at 2.0pm on Thursday 19th February, and the venue is Rockingham Road Pleasure Park, Park Road, Kettering, NN16 9RG

If you are interested in joining us please come along, there is a small charge for non group members to help cover costs. We shall be discussing our Lincoln trip and I will also be taking names for the London Trip Contact: Christine Strachan 01536 515730 ce.strachan1@ntlworld.com

Computer Group — Last week we worked with photographs. Downloading from the camera or phone, renaming the images to something which would be easy to find, creating folder in which to store the photos. Then simple resizing, cropping, colour correction and redeye removal using tools already on your computer as well as FREE services available online including creating your own personal photo books. Due to increased interest in this group and limited space at ASDA, you need to book a place at each meeting by replying to the e-mail I send out a few days before. New members are welcome but please contact me beforehand via my contact details below. Can everyone please check their e-mail, or www.u3acomputergroup.co.uk a couple of hours before each meetingO. just in case of cancellation or change. Also check www.U3AComputerGroup.co.uk which always has the most up to date information. Future topics as follows:

Country Matters — Most of my group know that I have a lot of hospital appointments from mid Feb until April, so I will have to give it a miss for March & April. The May visit will be to Church Farm, Great Easton, starting at the usual time of 10.30 am.

24 Feb - TABLETS and SMART PHONES. iPads, Android, Kindle etc.

Discussion Group — On a rather dismal day, our first meeting in the New Year was very well attended and we welcomed Myra, a new member. Tom led the discussion with the subject "Are the armed forces relevant in today's society?” He gave the members a series of bullet points to consider and many thoughtful contributions ensued. After much deliberation the general conclusion was that the armed forces are relevant today but that perhaps some restructuring should occur in order for them to adapt to the different type of 'warfare' that exists today. The next meeting will be on February 10th when Bridget Ling will be in the chair and David will lead with his topic of 'Conspiracy Theories'. Please contact Carole Bradbury on 01536 516 587 with any queries until March when thankfully Mary will be back.

Friday Pop-in - We were made very welcome at our new venue of the Cransley Coffee Shop. A huge , BIG thank you to all members who supported me. A grand total of 12. The area that the coffee shop could provide with that number of members was small and snug. In the New Year, if the support continues, we may have to look for a larger venue. I hope to see you all next month. Gardening Group — Gardening during the winter months when there are no other activities going on.

German–1 Basic Conversation — This established group for Basic German Conversation is now FULL.

Sow Sweet Peas. Sow sweet peas now for an early crop. As they have a long root run they need to be in deep pots. Two per pot (discarding the weakest when they appear in about 10 days), cover, water and give some heat if you can although not absolutely necessary. Transfer to their final place when danger of frost has passed.

German-2 Conversation for Absolute Beginners— The established group for basic German Conversation remains oversubscribed so this new group for absolute beginners has been formed and is now also FULL. This group meets on Wednesdays 1.30 to 3.00pm fortnightly. Contact: Joe Fletcher 01536 722 399 Golf — If you want to join us then we meet every Friday just after 1 pm at Pytchley Golf Cente for 9 holes which we usually finish by 3.30 pm followed by a cup of tea/coffee. For further info please give me a call. Look forward to hearing from you. Contact: Alan Stephens 01536 726 911 or 07931 637 660 or alanstephens26@outlook.com

Digging. Continue winter digging and pruning of bush apples and pears whenever the weather is right. Clear away all debris from the borders and lightly fork over, spreading manure or compost at the same time. A little and often will save you from a bad back. Well that’s the reason for finishing early anyway! Compost Heap. Remove stumps of brassicas and all weeds, except perennials, to the compost heap. All compostable material should go on your heap as you will be helping yourself as well as helping to save the planet Fruit. Examine stored fruit and vegetables and discard any which are rotting. Examine stored dahlia tubers and remove any which show signs of severe rotting. If it is not too serious then you can cut out the affected part. leaving the end to dry before re-wrapping them in newspaper.

Heartbeat— The next meeting will be on Monday 30th March 2015 for a brisk, but at your own pace, walk around Cranford. Meeting time will be 10.00 a.m. outside the Old Forge Coffee Shop in Cranford. Coffee afterwards will be in the Old Forge. New members welcome to join us. Contact: Bridget Ling 01536 515 730 Looking at Churches — Our first visit of the year was to Braybrooke church, where we had a very warm welcome in a very cold church. In the nineteenth century the Victorians tried very hard to keep the church warm by blocking off the chancel and also the tower porch. This meant that the chancel is now used as a kitchen, where two very nice ladies gave us tea and delicious home-made cakes. Our guide was very knowledgeable and told us all about Braybrooke castle and the River Jordan, which was called that, as they used to perform baptisms in it. After our tour of the Anglican church we were taken to the Baptist church nearby, so we got 2 for the price of one this time. Our next church visit is being organised by Jenny Hodgton, to Chelveston, where Jenny is the organist. This is on Wednesday, February 18th at 2.0pm and hopefully there will be lots of snowdrops around the churchyard. ADVANCE NOTICE. On Wednesday July 15th we will have a guided tour of Fotheringhay church. It is quite a distance so we will try to car share. This time it will be £3 for the guide as this is a standard charge. I will make a list of people willing to give a lift, and one for those who need a lift.

Onion sets. Put some sets into trays or even sew some seed for planting out in late March when the clocks go forward. With seed you can thin out when appropriate, even eating the thinning's!

Lunch Club — Our Lunch Club date which was organised by yours truly was at the Trading Post in Kettering. It was a little different to normal as The Trading Post do not take bookings. I had given them a little warning the day prior so they were not totally surprised. I did have to cross my fingers a little and hope there were available tables to seat us all together. However, all went well and we enjoyed lunch at a bargain price, especially the size of some of those desserts. Banana Split in particular! The February lunch will be organised by Elizabeth York and Kathleen Alton. It will be at the Lamb in Little Harrowden on Tuesday February 24th. Choose from the menu sheet at the U3A meeting the Tuesday prior, I look forward to seeing you there. Elizabeth is quickly jumping into action after returning home from a month long cruise, however if you need any other information regarding February lunch you can contact her on 01536 726810. There are still a few months that need to be organised for the Lunch Club so please let me know if you can help. New Members - We visit a different venue each month on the fourth Tuesday of the month. A menu is provided at the U3A meeting the week prior for you to make a choice and payment is not required until the day. New members are very welcome to join us. We are a very friendly bunch. Knit and Natter - We had our first knit and natter since before Christmas. It was great to catch up with everyone and after such a long time there was a lot to catch up on. We are trying to find any charities that would benefit from our knitting, if anyone knows of any homes that need knee blankets could they please let us know. Thank you.

Photography Group — The Photography Group met on a bright but extremely cold Monday morning in February at the Northampton And Lamport Railway at Chapel Brampton. Although the railway was not running this early in the season it did provide lots of opportunities to take pictures of peeling paint, corroding metal and rotting wood so beloved of photographers. We also welcomed two new members, Janet and John, so once again this group is up to full strength. We then retired to the adjacent Brampton Halt pub for a cup of coffee, a chat and a chance to get warm. Our next meeting will be at Harrington near Rothwell at 2.00pm, parking at the Tollemarche Arms and walking down to the church looking for snowdrops and aconites, weather permitting. "Bridal Procession" Having set the world to rights during the break, we listened to Berlioz "Rakocyz March" , "Gabriel's Oboe" and "Cast Your Fate to the Wind". All enjoyed the variety. Contact: Carole Bradbury 01536 516 587 cabrad@me.com Musical Circles 2 — Our first meeting for the new year began with Rachmaninov symphony no 2 . We continued listening to Mendelssohn symphony no 3, a piano concerto by Tchaikovsky, and a serenade for strings by Dvorak. Spanish Conversation — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Our sessions are normally free as we have the use of ASDA’s Training Room free of charge. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students. Having accepted three new students who all have previous experience of the language, we are now definitely at full capacity. However, we would be happy to start a waiting list but because of the level our members are at, having completed more than two years of study, new students, would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish.

Safe Driving — Safe Driving Group Are you concerned about your driving? Perhaps you’re concerned that your reactions aren’t as fast as they used to be or that your general driving ability has deteriorated over time. You may feel that you just need a little reassurance after a break from driving or prior to reapplying for your licence as you approach your 70th birthday. You may have lost confidence in your driving ability and are now much more limited in where you are able to travel. If you have these or any other concerns about your driving, we’d be pleased to help. We can offer a short driving assessment of about sixty minutes in your own car and on familiar routes. If you’d like a friend or family member to sit in, that’s fine. At the end of the drive we can discuss your driving and if it isn’t quite up to scratch we can discuss what you might do to improve it. A driving assessment could be a very good investment in your own safety, the safety of your passengers and your confidence behind the wheel. If you’d like help with any driving related issues or to find out more about the Safe Driving Group, please contact either

Singing For Pleasure — Singing in the rain - for once not! Well, that's the end of the 2014 Programme, brought triumphantly to its close at Abbeyfields on the last Monday afternoon in January. We "have often walked down this street before", usually in the pouring rain. Not so this time. Whenever we visit, however, we get a warm welcome. The fact that one of the residents is a former bandleader means we have to be really on our toes, but as we are an unfazed bundle of talent, we are dauntless, and give always of our best. The Programme for 2015 is already on the assembly line; absences of the walking wounded will, d v, be but temporary and Joy be unbounded! (Cos she's the one what does the bookings!) Bring it on! The garden tipped sideways. I doubted my eyes! The neighbours all stood there Transfixed in surprise. But where was my husband While all this occurred? Stood clutching the filter, Which was rather absurd As his fingers were bleeding. So I found a deep dish And rushed to the ex-pond To rescue the fish! The pool-man came over. “No problem,” he said. Famous last words, however, For the fish, they had fled.

Topic: In the late 80s two boys hit the local headlines when, having built themselves an igloo in a snowdrift on a country lane they were almost the victims of a snowplough. Use this event as a peg on which to hang any sort of play, tale, essay, report or whatever comes to you. Contact: Mary Wildman 01536 741 222 marywildman365@gmail.com

"Competition Challenge" painted in water colour by Jo Beaver.

Writers Too So far, so good. I am hoping to welcome some more new members on February 9th. The topic for March 9th will be “Among my souvenirs.” For more information Contact: Mary Wildman 01536 741 222 marywildman365@gmail.com Our dear Betty Lewis has had a rough time of it lately with health problems and a horticultural-piscatorial disaster. Still she can laugh about it all, however, and asked me to write a “commemorative poem” about the latter. So here it is, for a brave lady. Read it on page 9

"Swan and Cygnet" also in water colour and painted by Jo Beaver. Contacts:
