From the Chairman— Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! Here [fingers crossed] we all are, ready to embark on another year, boldly going and all that, in new surroundings. It will take a little getting used to, of course, and there are bound to be a few – I won’t say teething troubles; that’s tempting fate too strongly - unforeseen wrinkles, say, that may need ironing out. Whatever, I am confident of, and supremely grateful for, your customary support. None of us on the Committee has actually asked for the job, but we do it willingly for your entertainment, education and as much well-being as is in our all-too-mortal power. Of your charity, my lords, bear with us. And enjoy!

Busy Needles — There is a rumour that we are more sedate and studious than our sister group. Judge for yourselves: at our recent meeting, while beavering away as ever, we discussed Muffin the Mule, Bagpuss and the return of the Clangers amongst other deeply cultural matters (that showed our respective ages only two of us remembered "Whirlygig"). One of Marian's needles made a bid for freedom. Perhaps in its former life - she bought it at a charity shop - it has had too close an association with odd socks...?
Obituary
Sue Hales of Burton Latimer passed away on Friday 10th July. She had been poorly for a short while, and died at her home. She had been a member of Kettering U3A for several years and attended several group meetings including the Discussion Group, Lunch Club, and Looking at Churches.
Marian was moved to write the following: It was one of a pair. Nothing special to anyone Only it was one of a pair. It disappeared . Where to no one knew. I looked for it on the table and under the chair. It was just one of a pair. I prayed to St Jude . Decided it was c'est la vie The needle was one of a pair. St Anthony guided it back to me. It had been on an adventure To pastures new Soon to be reunited with its pair, In the jar on the side The needle that was one of a pair.
Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments. Bookworms — We discussed "A Song for Issy Bradley" . This book was an insight into the Mormon religion, and told how the family of Issy coped with her death. Her mother, who had married into the Mormon faith, was not able to cope, and sank deeper into depression. It was written by Carys Bray, who was brought up as a Mormon, but has since left the Mormon church. If you are going to read it, be prepared for tears. Our next read is "The Two of Us", by Andy Jones. Contact:

Card Making 1 — This month we were able to welcome a new member. Another valuable addition to the group. As always we had two happy mornings and several members had a go with the Cuttlebug and as a result we had some very different cards. Everyone was pleased with their productions. We had some discussion on varying sources of materials, scanning magazines often reaps big rewards. There will be no meetings in August as the dates are very close to my surgery. In September we are going to crack boxmaking which will be fun. A big thank you to all of you who sent me such glorious birthday cards. See you in September.
Canals & Waterways — Fifteen of us enjoyed a trip to Liverpool in June. The weather was mixed but was sunny on the day we arrived. We took an open top bus tour from the docks around the city sites enjoying the sunshine. Our trip on the Mersey ferry was a little cooler, but the rain held of till we had finished, and of course we sang 'Ferry Across The Mersey'. There was a lot to see and do. The Maritime museum with The Titanic and slavery museums, both Cathedrals and the Liver Building and The Cavern. Some of us took a trip to Crosby to see 'Another Place' by Anthony Gormley, the life size sculptures on the beach and in the sea. Our short trip gave us a good taste for what Liverpool has to offer and would be worth another visit. We shall have been on a boat trip from Abingdon to Oxford by the next meeting. If you are interested in meeting in August, perhaps a local trip to Stanwick Lakes or Foxton Locks would be good. If you are interested please let me know. Maggi shared what she had learnt from a course to help us all make our own unique cards. In my spare time ,( which seems less and less each day) have even been using my die cutter . Look forward to sharing ideas. Contact: Marian Tucker 01536 510 354 mariantucker1954@gmail.com

Computer Group — In the last session we looked at how to use Skype to communicate via voice or video with friends and family worldwide for FREE. We also had fun with Facebook. Sharing photos and stories with friends and family and read with enthusiasm people posting what they had for breakfast or how their cat jumps around plus other newsworthy topics! Hand out sheets and video tutorials are available at www.U3AComputerGroup.co.uk Due to increased interest in this group and limited space at ASDA, you need to book a place at each meeting by replying to the e-mail I send out a few days before. New members are welcome but please contact me beforehand via e-mail, details below. Can everyone please check their e-mail, or www.U3AComputerGroup.co.uk a couple of hours before each meetingS. just in case of cancellation or change. Also check www.U3AComputerGroup.co.uk which always has the most up to date information.
Country Matters — It was a beautiful, sunny morning when we met for our walk through Twywell to the white stones area of Twywell Hills & Dales. We hoped to see lots of dragon flies skimming over and around the ponds but unfortunately all but the biggest pond were dried out and cracked with no water in them whatsoever. The flowers also were a little behind in their flowering because of May being relatively cool, but we did enjoy plenty of birdsong. We circled the park and left through the plantation on our way back to the pub for a welcome meal. Our next meeting is 9th July which will have taken place by the time the magazine is in print, with a walk around Wicksteed Park meeting first at The Piper pub. Next meeting will be 13 August at The Vane Arms, Sudborough around 10.15 to order meal ready to leave at 10.30am. Contact:

Future topics as follows: 28 July—Android Tablet/Phone (basic) 11 Aug—no meeting 25 Aug— Backups + Files and Folders
Discussion Group — Our meeting in June took on the topic of "Why is Modern Life so Difficult" Firstly we queried how difficult is life compared to that of our grandparents and found that although life was less stressful between wars the tasks of housekeeping were much more arduous. We then went on to consider how and why we found life difficult. Technology we found was a major issue, many of us relying on young grandchildren to aid us with the complexities of the Internet! Other issues that came to mind were the fact that we are expected to keep very busy, and driving which causes many problems. All in all an enjoyable and informative afternoon. We were able to welcome a new member too so now we have two David's. As always we do not meet in July or August. The next meeting will be on September 8th and the topic will be "Can our choice of Radio and TV affect or change us". In October the topic will be "Is the motor car an absolute necessity?" I remain anxious to step down as Group Leader due to health and holiday issues, so I am hoping someone will feel able to take over so that our vibrant group can continue. I will remain an enthusiastic member of the group. Looking forward to September.
Please let me know which subjects you would like me to cover next. All sessions start at a beginners level so do not be afraid to come along (subject to space) and give it a try. Looking at Churches — In June we went to Fotheringhay church, which is a breathtaking sight as you drive towards it. Our guide was a history professor at Oundle public school, an author of medieval books, and was able to tell us in detail all about Richard 3rd, who was born in Fotheringhay Castle, and about Mary Queen of Scots, who was beheaded there. The church is huge, but was twice as long at one time, and also twice as wide, as there was a monastery attached to it. With the dissolution of the monasteries it became the size that it is now. Richard 3rd’s parents and brother are buried in this church, which we thought was a strong argument for Richard being buried there instead of in Leicester. There is a small chapel dedicated to him, a stained glass window with his arms and heraldry, all the kneelers in the church were a gift of the Richard 3rd society, and all the floral arrangements were white roses, for the House of York. There are memorials to several Dukes, and the church was very much used by Royalty as there was such a large castle nearby. After the church we went to the mound which was once Fotheringhay Castle and a member of our group, Robin Beeby told us more history about all the various owners, of which there were many. Some of us climbed up the mound, and others walked by the river. Then we went on to Polebrook garden centre for a nice friendly lunch together. As the monthly meeting falls the week after our next visit, I am not able to advertise the visit to Northampton. A report will be in the next newsletter. Our visit in August will be to Warkton church on Wednesday, August 19th at 2.0pm. There are some beautiful memorials which have recently been restored. We will not be having our own personal guide as the church is open every afternoon in August, but there will be a guide around to answer questions.
Friday Pop-in - Venue: Kino Lounge, Market Place This is now a great success with another new member, Janice, joining us making a total of 13. We share local news and interests, and at the same time enjoy tea, coffee and teacakes with Tom enjoying his favourite slice of carrot cake. We missed the company of Ray. German Basic Conversation — The two German groups have now merged together. This established group for Basic German Conversation is now FULL.
Knit and Natter - We not only had a productive morning producing a variety of knitted items but we learnt about the Althorpe House Literary Festival that Janet and Mary E went to and Mary W read us a very amusing piece about the Magna Carter, which I believe she read at the AGM. We also had news Jean had had a nasty accident but she is recovering well and we all send her our best wishes.
Contact: Joe Fletcher 01536 722 399 Kettering’s sixty years of twinning School exchanges commenced in 1955 when contacts were made with the town of Lahnstein on the Rhine in Germany. For many years children travelled annually to and fro to learn a foreign language, and to be paired with and live at the home of a foreign pupil. 1959 the two towns officially formed a partnership to promote closer connections with the schools, clubs and with the inhabitants in general. Meanwhile school exchanges have faltered; however relationships with adults have endured with many families having given support to the cause while making long term friendships. This is the sixtieth Jubilee year, and it was celebrated in style in Lahnstein during the final week of May with 37 members travelling including some from the U3A German Conversation Group eager to practice the lingo. Every annual visit is memorable when friendships become ever more meaningful, and successive visits more enjoyable. Following daily excursions to places of interest in the Rhineland, some evening enjoyment at vineyards, and on this special occasion an evening of entertainment aboard a local cruise ship, our appreciation of the efforts of the organisers and the generosity of host families was expressed at a formal meeting with the Buergermeister, and everyone assembled. This year a school exchange is again being made, and Buccleuch Academy will host a party from Lahnstein in September. May this be a new start for the younger generation and their families to help continue what is a worthwhile and meaningful partnership.
Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523 867 Lunch Club — Our thanks to Sue for organising our lunch for June. The usual high spirits, and, I remembered my camera. July lunch will be organised by Elizabeth York and Kathleen Alton at the Royal Oak Walgrave. Please ring Elizabeth 726810 or Kathleen 724428 if you have a query. Pauline & Ken Reed were to organise the August lunch, but due to Pauline's very bad fall, this of course will not be the case. We hope Pauline continues to improve. I have decided to have a summer break for August and continue our lunches in September. As I will be on holiday I will miss the July lunch, but look forward to seeing you all in September. Please put your name on the list at the U3A meeting as usual the week prior, hope you can join us. Welcome to new members. New Members - We visit a different venue each month on the forth Tuesday of the month. A menu is provided at the U3A meeting the week prior for you to make a choice and payment is not required until the day. New members are very welcome to join us, we are a very friendly bunch. Musical Circles 2 — Our afternoon of music began with 2 pieces by Mendelssohn - On wings of song and Octet for Strings followed by Rachmaninov's waltz dances for two pianos, we then listened to Schubert's Fantasia and German Dances. Strauss and Vivaldi completed our program of entertaining music. Our next meeting is on the 29th July.
Safe Driving — More than 30,000 road accidents a year caused by drivers ‘failing to look properly' The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has identified that once again ‘failure to look properly’ is the most common contributory factor included in over 30,000 vehicle accidents a year, following a Freedom of Information request to the Department for Transport.
Contact: Eileen Mason 01536 725 925
Police can record up to six contributory factors from a list of 77 for each incident to explain why they think a crash took place but the top two give the most obvious reasons for the incident. Analysis of the 2013 contributory factor combinations shows that top of the list was ‘failure to look properly’ combined with a ‘failure to judge another person's path or speed’. These two together were responsible for 13,299 accidents, or 7% of the total number.
Musical Circles 1 — At our last meeting we had a varied selection enjoyed by all. We started with Griegs Solveig’s Song, Leonardis Souvenir de Sicile,Rossini’s Overture to Thieving Magpie, Schuman’s symphony No.3, -Rhenish, Brahms Hungarian Dance No.1, Chopin’s Polonaise No.1. and ended with Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns. Contact: Carole Bradbury 01536 516 587 cabrad@me.com
Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive officer, said: “These figures show conclusively that simple human errors continue to cause the majority of accidents. Drivers cannot blame something or someone else for a collision happening, it is down to every one of us to make a difference. “We feel that many people eventually get complacent behind the wheel and inattention creeps in. Combine this with fatigue and distractions, inside and outside the vehicle and the message is clear that drivers must apply their full attention to driving – you simply cannot do two things at once if one of them is driving.
Playford English Country Dancing - We shall be happy to welcome a new member, Margaret Hall, to our next meeting. Any other people interested please contact me. We meet, 2nd &4th Weds. at St. Andrews Church Hall 10.30-noon. Contact: Jean Beaver 01933 224474

Thanks to Pauline for running a successful group for quite a period of time. Unfortunately we do not have a successor but if anyone is interested please come forward. Meanwhile every good wish goes to Pauline for a successful recovery. ( EDITORS Note: At the last monthly meeting I was verbally assaulted by a woman from the Scrabble group saying the information was wrong, I should know better and as newsletter editor it was my responsibility to get things right! As always, news is provided by each group leader and I report exactly what they ask me to. I spend two whole days a month producing your newsletter and I take exception to such abusive attacks.

Theatre Goers — National MOUSETRAP: Derngate theatre Wednesday 9th September, stall seats: 2.30 matinee £24.Closing date 24th July. Agatha Christie`s Mousetrap is famous around the world for being the longest running show of any kind in the history of the theatre; and now the 60th anniversary production is back in Northampton. In her own inimitable style, Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense and brilliantly intricate plot, where murder lurks around every corner. GLENN MILLER STORY: Milton Keynes theatre Wednesday 28th October, seats in the circle £17.50. Closing date 7th September. Bought to the stage for the first time in a new musical spectacular is the life, fame and vanishing of America`s most famous big band leader. Music legend, Tommy Steele, commands the stage and featuring the 16 piece Glenn Miller orchestra. ROMEO & JULIET, the English National Ballet production, was originally booked at the Milton Keynes theatre at a potential cost of £26 ( it would have cost more if less than 10 tickets were sold) but as a group it was decided to opt for the actual recording of the live performance being shown at the Odeon cinema on 22nd September, which is being organised by Glynis our local productions member at a cost of £15.10. As you can see it is a savings of over £10 should we have decided to go to the M & K theatre but a substantial savings if we were to go to London for the live performance. But take it from me when you sit in the cinema and watch the recordings, you do feel you are in the London audience appreciating the talent, grace and superb performance of the Royal Ballet. When standard group discounts are used, the price of the tickets are governed by the number of tickets reserved. The price of the theatre seats above is concessionary. Concessionary priced tickets are determined by groups of 8+10 10+ group numbers.
Singing For Pleasure — Sumer is icumen in/ Loudly sing cuccu. Having lately given our last performance for this season, we are now at liberty to try new songs to add to the repertoire; not that this medieval ditty is one of them! Yet. Nor are we singing Waterloo, despite its current relevance and our liking for Abba numbers. Although our summer break is almost upon us - no meeting in August - we are far from winding down: seen from a fortnightly point of view, Christmas will be but the blink of an eye away when we resume in September. Meanwhile, suggestions and requests (of a seemly nature) will be considered. Waterloo Sunset? Maybe not. For more information and inquiries re the putative second group, Contact: Jill Dee 01536 514 054 or Mary Wildman 01536 741 222 mary@u3akettering.co.uk Spanish Conversation — The Spanish conversation group has been going for well over two years and it continues to thrive. We meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Our sessions are normally free as we usually have the use of ASDA’s Training Room free of charge. When that is not available we use a member’s house. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students. Occasionally we have a guest speaker for conversation sessions who is a Spanish lady and former teacher. Having accepted two new students who all have previous experience of the language, we are almost at full capacity. However, we would possibly be able to take one more student but because of the level our members are at, a new student would need to have a reasonable knowledge of the Spanish language. If the car park happens to be full then the church grounds may be used. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 2.00pm 4.00pm. The dates are as follows:- 10th & 24th Sep, 8th & 22nd Oct, 12th & 26th Nov, 10th Dec 2015 (last class) New classes for the Winter Term will start again on 14th January, 2016. Theatre Group — Local Productions ODEON + CULTURE FILMED LIVE The review for Carmen was submitted by Sue Hince. I went with great expectations of Carmen. A basket of fruit piled high upon her head, but not so as this was a modern version, a little risqué in parts and not for the faint-hearted. The music was lovely, a very enjoyable evening was spent by all. The Theatre Goers offer so much for all tastes. Thank you Glynis and Helen Forthcoming productions :The classic ROMEO AND JULIET by the Royal Ballet Tues 22nd Sep 7.15pm and for Christmas delight THE NUTCRACKER also Royal Ballet Wed 16th Dec 7.15pm Tickets for both productions are £15.10 premium seats. Walking Group -
The group set out from the Kings Head public house, Apethorpe, and completed a circular walk through scenic countryside. We saw some amazing wildlife, from colourful butterflies to a number of fallow deer. It turned out to be the hottest day of the year and a few of the group really felt the heat. However, we all finished safely and enjoyed a nice meal and a very welcome cold drink in the Kings Head. The August walk is the Reservoir Walk. This begins on Wedneday 5th August, at the Wharf Inn, Welford, where lunch can be pre ordered from 10am. The walk will commence 10:15am prompt. For further information please contact John Sharp 01536 518 026 Writers Group & Writers Too Latest news: The Anthology of our best work is typed up, proof-read, and almost ready to go. Orders are even coming in. Yay! One mystery, though: can anyone tell us who lived at 46 Acacia Avenue? A second contribution without attribution is a delightful piece on string theory. If you know who wrote either, please let me know. Reminder: in August Writers' Group will be meeting at Elizabeth Brassington's house, as the Parish Rooms will not be available.
New members information Our group members enjoy going to the theatre or cinema to see plays, ballet, opera and musicals on a regular basis. We go to local theatres (Lighthouse and Masque ); to theatres in Milton Keynes, Northampton and to live performances that are transmitted to the Odeon Cinema in Kettering. These live performances take place in theatres around the world e.g. Royal Opera House and National Theatre London, New York Met also the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. This allows us to see top class performances for a fraction of the price. All theatre visits are open to any U3A members who wish to participate. All we ask is for early booking and prompt payment for the seats by the date specified. Transport to be arranged by the individual. The theatre visit organisers are Glynis Hall who looks after local productions and Helen McAdams who looks after the productions further afield. If you would like more information or to book your seat Contact : Helen 01536 628304 Contact: Glynis Hall 01536 516 249 glynis.john@02.co.uk
And finally (by request): Sometimes when you're really cheesed And things aren't going to plan, Is it best to stay cool Playing the fool Than be shirty as ever you can? When you're busy and feeling all in, Chuck formality into the bin. Try making it fun Or you'll be the one Making others unhappy as sin. It's not love that makes the world turn; That's a lesson you need to learn. Life is too brief To cause yourself grief: This truth may you clearly discern Misery's a thief; Embrace light relief, Laugh long, and content you will earn. MW
