Crazy Hats Breast Cancer Appeal by
Glennis Hooper From the Chairman— Well now. The Baby’s arrived; the Voting’s done – for the time being; life falls gently back into the normal run of things. But, not for KU3A it doesn’t. For us there is still excitement in the offing. Not the AGM per se, I grant you, nor the paying of subs though both require attending to. (See elsewhere in this publication.) There will be changes in Committee roles and personnel, of course, and the introduction of new Interest Groups is looking likely. Thank you everyone who has returned a survey form: the response has been most encouraging, and we intend to provide the opportunity to build on that at next month’s meeting, after the formal bit. The most exciting thing to look forward to, however, is the move to a New Venue! Tan tan tarra! We have listened and looked and found "somewhere a place for us" with many advantages and but a stone’s throw away from here. Cheaper, licenced and raffle permissible, more comfortable, more accessible, full of nostalgia for some at least: formerly the Coop Hall, now The Eden Centre I thangyou.

COMMITTEE 2015/16
The Committee of Kettering U3A is governed by our constitution. This states that the Committee shall have 4 Honorary Officers. These are Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer - all can serve a term of up to 3 years each. Committee Members, who each serve a yearly term, may stand for re-election if they so wish. In June 2015 the situation is:Mary Wildman (Chairman) has served 1 year of her 3 year term and will remain in post. Cyril Young (Vice -Chairman) has served 1 year of a 3 year term and will remain in post. Maggi McGuire (Treasurer) has completed a 3 year term and is standing down from this post. Nominations are sought for this post. Maggi will continue as Membership Secretary Marian Tucker (Secretary) is standing down and nominations are sought for this post. Marian will continue as a Committee member and Speaker Seeker. Maureen Curd (Group Co-ordinator) is standing down. Richard Boyles (Newsletter Editor) will continue in post. Helen McAdam and Elizabeth Toseland are willing to continue as Committee members Diane Tebbutt (Co-opted Member) is standing for election as a Committee Member There is, as a result, a vacancy for a Committee member. Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments. Bookworms — The group recently read Kate Morton's "The Secret Keeper" which we would recommend to other readers in U3A. It is the story of Lauren, a much loved actress, and her earlier life in 1961. Our next book is "The People of the Book" and we will discuss our opinions at our next meeting on 27 May. I look forward to catching up with my book group. Contact:
Canals & Waterways — Eleven of us enjoyed a three day trip to London. We stayed in Docklands which was central to what we wanted to see, and used buses, the Docklands Light Railway, underground and a river boat to get around. We had a glorious sunny day for our boat trip from Westminster to Greenwich and The Thames Barrier. At Greenwich we split up as there is so much to see and do, meeting up to catch the last boat back to St Katharine’s Dock. The view of London Bridge was from our restaurant. A very enjoyable day all round.

Busy Needles — The photos say it all, really. KGH Neo-natal department is most grateful for our relevant items and wish me to pass on their thanks to Knit and
Natter, too. Wood Green and Life for African Mothers also express their appreciation of our industry. It is also nice to put to good use donations of wool, squares and even unfinished knitting or crochet projects; nothing is wasted. KGH has mentioned that quilts to cover incubators when being moved would also be most acceptable. So any quilters out there who may be interested, would you like to contact me?
On Thursday we went up on the cable car over the Thames. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be (I
don't like heights). We did a return journey stopped for coffee and then some of us went to The Olympic park and had a canal boat ride followed by lunch at a Greek restaurant. All in all a very successful trip.

As always we put the world to rights, checked all our aches and pains and then got down to the serious business of Cardmaking! Again a diverse selection of cards were produced, all of which were beautiful despite one member disputing that with her very pretty card. The next meetings are on June 2nd and 3rd. Our next day trip is to Willen Lake North, Milton Keynes on Thursday 21st May. We meet at the car park post code MK15 0DS at 10.30 am. Car parking charges are £1.20 for 2 hours, £2.40 for 4 hours. I am hoping to look around before then regarding places to eat etc. will let you know at the U3A meeting on 19th May or by e-mail.
Card Making 2 — April's meeting was cancelled as I was ill with a virus and I am better now. May meeting will have happened at the time of this newsletter.
Our June 16th - 18th trip is to Liverpool Docks and the Mersey Ferry. If you are interested in joining us on any of these trips please let me know.

Computer Group — In the last session we looked at the Cloud storage and how to share files online. Hand out sheets and video tutorials are available at www.U3AComputerGroup.co.uk
Discussion Group — A very lively and fun afternoon was had with David leading the session on the topic of "Open Borders, Closed Borders". The whole session became a party political broadcast on behalf of all parties with a discussion on Europe thrown in. The discussion even followed on through the tea break. It was that good! Sandra kindly offered to chair the May session as I am sunning myself. The June meeting will be the last until September as the room isn't available in July and August. Friday Pop-in - The change of venue to the Kino Lounge in Market Place was well supported. Quite an experience for some of us. The surroundings are very different. We were made very welcome in a room with views overlooking the modern Market Place

Country Matters — May’s meeting is set for 14th May at 10.30 at Rectory Farm, Great Easton, Market Harborough LE16 8SN – parking available in the farm yard. We have organised a conducted farm walk provided by farm’s staff. Tea and coffee (possibly cake too!) will be available afterwards along with sale of bird food and possibly a quiz on old farm tools/ machinery. Gardening Group — Two visits you may like to make in early June.
German–1 Basic Conversation — This established group for Basic German Conversation is now FULL.
1. Sunday 7th June. 2 to 6pm Finedon Gardens NN9 5JN Three gardens to visit for a combined entry price of £3.50, children free, in aid of NGS funds. All gardens are different with everything from vegetables to flowers, lawns, mixed borders, gravel, planters, water features, pergolas, rose arches, summerhouse and tree house. There are also raised beds, soft fruits shrubs, sculptures and ornaments. Cream teas available at one location and home raised plant sales at the other.. Finedon is 6 miles SE of Kettering and all gardens are signposted from the A6 and A510.

Included is a plant surgery by a local expert so bring along your plants or questions. Home raised plants for sale. Admission £3.50 to include wine and nibbles in aid of NGS funds. Children free. Finedon is 6 miles from Kettering and the garden is signposted from the A6 and A510.

All the gardens are mainly wheelchair friendly. Car share if possible. Contact: Ray Bradbury 01536 516587 Looking at Churches — Our visit in April was to Haselbech church, which is a pretty little country church, but sadly neglected as Haselbech is a very small village and not many people go to church. The vicar is struggling to keep it going as she does not have much help. A lot of work was done on the church in Victorian times and there is a beautiful modern stained glass window above the High Altar. The organ is the oldest of its type in Europe and there are lovely carved pews about 400 years old. The church has a full set of eight bells, which are rung when there are visiting bellringers to enjoy using them. It was a lovely sunny day and warmer outside than in, so it was interesting to read the gravestones and tombs, in fact a leaflet telling of the memorials had been printed. One prominent family were the Borwick family, of baking powder fame. As we were near to Kelmarsh, some of our group went on to Kelmarsh Hall to sit in the sunshine and have a cup of tea and cream cakes! Our next church will be All Saints church in Oakham, on Wednesday May 20th at 2.0pm On June 17th, we will go to Fotheringhay, which is where Richard III was born, and Mary, Queen of Scots was beheaded. Golf — Well we`ve had some fantastic weather which has resulted with to 2 x 4 balls turning up, we`ll soon have to book another T time so it would be really nice to have say up to 12 of us playing. If that's the case that we could arrange regular competitions based on a handicap system. With that in mind and the weather improving our regular meets at 1.30 pm Fridays at Pytchley Golf Club still seems to be the most popular time !!
Knit and Natter - We had a lively morning last Monday, with some knitting being produced and lots of topics discussed. We sorted out all the knitting we had already done sending some items to the neonatal unit at Kettering hospital and the rest to Africa to help where people have lost everything through the Ebola crisis. Heartbeat— We met in Cranford for the March spring walk and enjoyed our outing, seeing spring flowers and lambs along the route. There was lively chat over the refreshments taken at the coffee shop in Cranford. The next organised walk will take place Monday 6th July 2015. We will meet at Poplars Farm Road, off Warkton Lane. Kettering at 10 o'clock. As group members will know, you do not need to wait for that date to contact another member of the group. If you find that you have half an hour to spend doing some exercise then call someone and get walking, it will do your heart good.
Musical Circles 2 — There were two themes this month. EARTH and WATER. The obvious links were as follows. "Sheep may Safely Graze" Bach. "The Banks of Green Willow" by Butterworth.. " In the Steppes of Central Asia" Borodin. " The Salley Gardens" sung by Robert Tear, and " The Flower Duet" Delibes sung by Mandy Maple and Danielle Miller. Next. " Into The Hall of the Mountain Kings" by Greig then onto "Death and the Maiden” string quartet by Schubert. With tenor Robert Tear urging Maud to "Come into the Garden" we paused for a "tea break" The second half of our afternoon was spent on the theme WATER and gliding through it came "The Swan" then " Aquarium" from "Carnival of Animals" by Saint-Saens. "Pearl Fisher Duet" by Bizet. Britten's "Dawn" from Peter Grimes and "The Sea and Sinbad's" Ship" by Rimsky- Korsakov With a jolly rendering of "When I was a Lad" from H.M.S Pinafore, by Gilbert and Sullivan our afternoon came to a close.

Lunch Club — Thank you very much Jean and Helen for organising our April lunch at The Old Friar Twywell. Lunch was very good and enjoyed by all with the usual chatter. Photography Group — Ashton near Oundle was the destination for the May meeting of the Photography Group. Very changeable weather and heavy skies provided an interesting challenge in the search for good photographic subjects. A walk along part of the Nene Way gave opportunities to photograph flowers, trees and the landscape. The village of course is very attractive, with many thatched cottages and accompanying gardens. A walk down to Ashton Mill and the river concluded the afternoon outing. The next meeting will be on Monday 1st June at 2.00pm when we hope to visit Lyveden New Bield.
Photography Group — In April five members of the Photography Group visited Twywell Hills And Dales. Because the trees are still devoid of leaves the light inside the woodland was sufficient to take hand-held pictures of the emerging plant life, the textures in the rocks and tree bark, and even to make interesting compositions using the curvaceous boardwalks. In the sky there were plenty of Red Kites soaring, and the occasional rabbit put in an appearance as we walked along the ridge back to the car park. Unfortunately, we have had to postpone one performance as our pianist has been under the weather; we wish Carol a speedy recovery. Thanks are due to Linda for accompanying rehearsal in Carol's stead, and a hearty welcome back to Jill from her recent gadding about. Spanish Conversation — The Spanish conversation group continues to thrive and meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Our sessions are normally free as we usually have the use of ASDA’s Training Room free of charge. When that is not available we use a member’s house. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students. Occasionally we have a guest speaker for conversation sessions who is a Spanish lady and former teacher Having accepted three new students who all have previous experience of the language, we are now definitely at full capacity. However, we would be happy to start a waiting list but because of the level our members are at, having completed more than two years of study, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish.
Theatre Goers — National The following shows are being performed at the Milton Keynes Theatre, both are 2.30 matinees. ROMEO & JULIET: Friday 23rd October; stall seats £26; closing date 1st June. English national ballet brings the world`s greatest love story to the stage with Rudolf Nureyev`s inventive and passionate choreography and Prokofiev`s exhilarating score performed live by the English National Ballet Philarmonic. GLENN MILLER STORY: Wednesday 28th October; seats in circle £17.50; closing date 7th September. Brought to the stage for the first time in a new musical spectacular is the life, fame and vanishing of America’s most famous big band leader. music legend, Tommy Steele, commands the stage and featuring the 16-piece Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Contact: Joan Allingham 01536 722 610 Trips & Visits - URGENT NOTICES REGARDING CANCELLATION OF PROPOSED TRIPS. Due to lack of numbers I have had to cancel the proposed trip to Hampton Court. I had 21 people booked for Hampton Court and was hoping for a further 10 when 3 more people cancelled. I am sorry to disappoint those of you who had committed yourselves but all money paid is being refunded.
ANYTHING GOES: Unfortunately the show at the M & K theatre ( 23rd September ) has been cancelled by the organisers: they have decided to reduce the number of shows on the tour and the M & K theatre was one of the unlucky ones.
As for the proposed trip to Norwich on the 21st July only 8 people showed interest so because of the time restraint that trip too has been cancelled. I still have a coach reserved for London on Saturday 24th October but I will need payment & numbers for the coach company by the U3A meeting in August. Please do not delay in reserving a place as the coach company have been very facilitating and I do need to give them warning of a cancelled date. Also for the trip to London the Theatre Group have offered to book seats for shows of your choice but again they need advance commitment. Remember group rates only apply for a set number of people!
We hope to join-up with the London day trip organised by Maureen Curd on 24th October, and get tickets for one of the theatre shows. More details in the next news letter. When standard group discounts are used, the price of the tickets is governed by the number of tickets reserved. The price of the seats above is concessionary. Theatre Group — Local Productions ODEON + CULTURE FILMED LIVE Review for La Fille Mal Gardee. A large group of theatre goers were enthralled by the Royal Ballet's La Fille Mal Gardée, it is classical ballet’s supreme romantic comedy. Beautifully danced by the principal dancers it is a tale of young love, but also a giddy whirl of dancing chickens, a halfwit suitor and clog dancing mother. Watching a superb performance of this masterpiece is like being whisked blissfully off to a sun-kissed meadow in the height of summer. It gave us an evening that effervesced from start to finish with life, love and laughter.
Walking Group It was with some trepidation that a group of 11 walkers set out from The Hare at Loddington, as successive forecasts predicted strong winds and heavy showers. These weather worries were mostly unfounded, however, because apart from blustery winds the rain stayed away and the sun managed to break through on many occasions.
Forthcoming productions will be discussed at the next Theatregoers meeting and announced at the next U3A meeting. Some production are very popular and tickets need to be purchased a few weeks in advance to ensure good seats, also cannot be purchased until paid for. If tickets are required, cash or cheque must be produced at the meeting or posted to the secretary Maggi McGuire very soon after to enable Glynis to arrange tickets and ensure availability. The walk took us through pleasant landscapes to Cransley Wood, where bluebells in full bloom, along with many other wild flowers, were a delight to see. From here we passed through Cransley and back to Loddington for a leisurely lunch. Re-viewing (as opposed to reviewing) our past pieces is both pleasurable and instructive. New writing is also eligible for consideration: topic for next time, inspired by gales at the Parish Rooms’ doors, is “There’s no one in here called Heathcliff.”

Writers Too’s suggested topic is to tell a well-known tale, such as a fairy tale, but from a different viewpoint than the traditional.
New classes for the Winter Term will start again on 14th January, 2016.
