21st June 2016 Kettering U3A Year 12 Newsletter 12 Today
Annual General Meeting From the Chairman— AGM day 2016. That’s it for that topic; sufficient unto the day the actual formalities thereof. Instead the foci of this piece are (a) Hats and (b) New Members. Firstly, thank you all who made the effort to appear, in public, in unaccustomed headgear: bet more of you wished you had too!* It’s a treacherous and uncertain world we live in, so let us do what good we can, and have fun doing it. Clearly, we must be doing some things right as we have attracted a host of new members over the past few months. Welcome, one and all. A pity we had but a few at the recent New Members Meeting. Many, many thanks to those who did attend, and to the Group Leaders – wonderful folk – and, far from least, to Di and Chris who kept us fed and watered. It was, I think, an enjoyable and productive afternoon with lots of laughs. Smaller numbers did have its upside, however. The labourers may have been few, but the harvest seemed plentiful. *You’ll get your chance at Christmas, though. Watch this space.

Bookworms — We have just read "A Half Forgotten Song" by Katherine Webb. It is the story of Charles Aubrey, a famed artist, his mistress and daughters, and Mitzy, who has been in love with him since she was a child. The story is inspired by, but not based upon Augustus John, and is set in the beautiful county of Dorset. We all loved it. Next meeting - 22 June. Contact:

Thank you to all who pass on information about speakers, give feedback about the speakers, and for members who request speakers information from me. ( I was advised that's a good sign.) Most of the speakers have been booked for the next year so I wish the new speaker seeker and the new committee every success.
Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we pay £2 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

Canals & Waterways—We made a return visit to Lincoln, this time when everything was open. The Cathedral is beautiful and we had a very good guide to explain the history, both culturally and of the building. The views from the castle are impressive and there is an exhibition in the Castle which contains one of only two existing copies of the Magna Carta and an original Charter of the Forest. We had a boat trip on the Brayford Belle which was very relaxing. Our next trip is to Shardlow Heritage Center on Thursday 21st July, details will be available at the next U3A meeting
Busy Needles and Banter — Mary, Mary, [what me? Contrary?], how do these garments grow? Like greased lightning, is the answer. We’ve just sent off a large bag of items for African Mothers, and another for Wood Green; little things for preemies have gone to KGH, and Marian’s twiddle muffs for dementia cases are works of art and invention. Angela Gorman of LfAM posted the following on her facebook page: “Parcel of beautiful clothes arrived today from Mary Wildman and her knitting group...such love and attention in every detail.” Our pleasure, Angela. Card Making — I love making cards with this wonderful group. The comments are hilarious, ranging from " I don't get how to do it " to " it's not perfect". Then lo and behold the most wonderful cards are produced each month. This month we made layered cards going up and down. Then we made this beautiful butterfly card for use on any occasion. They are beautiful. Thank you Eileen for having the June meeting at her house. I have had a few phone calls asking to join this group. Sadly I have no vacancies as there are 8 in this group and I only have room for 8 people . Maybe there is a member who would like to start a craft group? Country Matters — Again we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day following two very miserable, cold wet ones! We met at The Queen’s Head in Higham Ferrers and made our way down to the River Nene and walked around the nearby lakes which were once gravel pits. We saw lots of butterflies and damsel flies flying around the longer grasses and bushes. Heard lots of birdsong as we carried on walking along an old railway track and a more minor tramway track – travelled back along the old ironstone sidings which eventually led to a nice, secluded greenway which took us back to Higham Ferrers. All in all a very good walk. Many of us enjoyed lunch after in The Queen’s Head. June’s meeting will have taken place by the time this is in print (9th June at Summer Leys Nature Reserve Great Doddington). July’s meeting is 7 July in Brixworth meeting at the Coach & Horses Pub – 10.15 for 10.30 start – this allows time for a ‘comfort stop’ and provides the opportunity to order lunch if required.

Family History - Our June meeting was all about the history of Parish Records and how to find them online and in Record Offices. Following Henry VIII split with the Catholic Church, in 1538 the new Church of England decreed that all baptism, marriage and burials had to be recorded by every parish. It’s these records which are so useful in tracing our family’s history.

Golf — Our regular group meets at 1.30 pm Fridays at Pytchley Golf Club still seems to be the most popular time !!
History - Members of the History Group had an enjoyable meeting on the 6th June, when Mr Fred West from the Aviation Museum at Harrington gave a very interesting talk on Women at War. Until the First World War women were regarded primarily as wives, mothers and homemakers but when the majority of men were called up to the armed services, women took over the work the men had previously carried out. They did the work very well and were found to be driving trams, ambulance drivers, munitions workers, working on the farms etc. When the war ended the women were sent back to their previous lives until the start of the Second World War. Against stiff opposition women again took on the jobs previously carried out by the men. We were told about the brave ones who worked for the Special Operations Services parachuting or being flown into France where they acted as couriers and radio operatives etc with the Resistance. Their life expectancy was anticipated to be around six weeks and a number of them were captured by the Germans, tortured and sent to concentration camps where 13 of them were executed. The second half of the talk covered women who had learnt how to fly before the war and who, despite the doubters, took over the delivery of planes from the manufacturers to various airfields throughout the country. The planes included Spitfires, Hurricane and a number of different bombers. This was very difficult work as sometimes they only had 30 minutes in which to get to know a plane they had never flown before when they had to take off. They didn’t have flight plans as it was thought they wouldn’t understand them and had to fly following railway lines, rivers, roads etc. to their destination. Some of the lady pilots were great characters and their exploits very amusing. All in all a very enjoyable afternoon. Our thanks to Fred for a really cracking talk.

Photography Group — Because members of the Photography Group have been finding it difficult to attend recent meetings it has been decided to take a summer break, so there will be no meetings of the group in June, July and August. Meetings will resume on Monday 5th September. There will also be a change of emphasis in the meetings. We will begin the "new season" with a sequence of four indoor sessions where the emphasis will be on looking at our photographs in terms of composition and technical issues, and how postprocessing in Photoshop can bring about improvements. Space is limited, so members will be asked to confirm their availability for each session, and will be asked to bring along their laptops and a selection of their photographs for analysis and discussion. More details of the programme for the indoor sessions will be issued to members of the group nearer the time.
Looking at Churches — There was no church visit in May due to holidays. Tomorrow Wednesday, June 15th, 2.0pm, it is an afternoon in Hallaton, with a special event organised by the villagers. There will be a tour of the church, a visit to the museum to see Hallaton at War, and a tour of the historic village, where the Hallaton Treasure was found. Cost for the afternoon is £5 each. Sat –Nav LE16 8TY. On July 20th at 2.0pm the church will be Great Harrowden. Contact: Trevor Rudkin 01536 711 976 trevor.rudkin@gmail.com Musical Circles 2 — We spent an afternoon "at the opera", beginning with the overture from Smetana's "The Bartered Bride". We then heard "Sempre gridi" from Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia", and the murder of Il Commendatore from Mozart's "Don Giovanni". The beautiful voice of Natalie Dessay captivated us with an extract from Bellini's "La Sonambula", and the well known "Mi chiamano Mimi" from "La Boheme" by Puccini was sung by Angela Georghiu. Angela was heard again in the next extract, where her former husband Roberto Alagna began with "Una furtiva lagrima" from Donizetti's "L'Elisir D'Amore". The instantly recognisable voice of Placido Domingo was heard in "E lucevan le stelle" from Puccini's "Tosca", and then two less frequently heard operas were featured. The opening royal court scene from Verdi's "Un Ballo In Maschera" was followed by a chorus from "Les Troyens" by Berlioz. A return to Mozart, this time the prayer to Isis and Osiris from "Die Zauberflote", and then another Verdi opera, "Otello", with the evil Iago (Leo Nucci) is persuading Cassio to get drunk so that he does not carry out his guard duties properly. Beethoven's only opera "Fidelio" was featured next, with the prisoners enjoying a brief spell outside in the spring sunshine before the prison governor returns and angrily orders them all to be sent back into their cells. "Descend kind pity" from Handel's Theodora was followed finally by two light-hearted extracts by Offenbach. The "Krik Krak" song from "Les Contes D'Hoffmann" and the "Fly" song from "Orphee Aux Enfers" completed a pleasant interlude on a rather wet day. Motorists celebrates its 60th birthday. It’s also the year that all areas of the Institute of Advanced Motorists have joined together under one trading name – IAM RoadSmart. With summer bringing more people onto bikes and motorbikes, Simon Elstow of IAM RoadSmart advises drivers on how best to share the road with other road users. Keep an eye out for cyclists and motorcyclists and give them lots of space. Leave cyclists enough room when you pass them to allow them to move out to negotiate drains and potholes. Overtake thoughtfully. Passing a cyclist quickly might feel safe from inside the metal shell of your car, but it will not for the cyclist – the closer you are, the worse it feels. Bear in mind that cyclists and certainly motorcyclists may be travelling quicker than you down the same road. Check all of your mirrors regularly so you see bikes approaching from behind. In particular, check your mirrors before either changing direction or changing lanes, especially in traffic queues. If a motorcyclist is trying to get past in heavy traffic, let them. Don’t hinder their progress just because you are stuck where you are. Give clear and early signals to allow other road users plenty of time to react. Don’t cut up a cyclist when turning left. Never overtake then turn left across their front wheel. Check for bikes coming before opening the driver’s door when you’ve parked. Simon Elstow said: “The most common cause of road accidents is ‘failed to look properly’ – and this oversight is being made by all kinds of road users. We all need to look out for each other to stamp out these avoidable collisions.” “Most road users don’t just use one mode of transport, so use the knowledge you have from the others to practise a bit more patience and understanding of those around you.” www.iamroadsmart.com

Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We have the use of a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. Just occasionally we cannot have the ASDA room and when this happens we have an alternative at a total cost of £10 per session. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. Because of the size of the ASDA room, we are now really at full capacity. However, we would be happy to consider one or at most two more members but because of the level our members are at, having completed more than two years of study, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of Spanish and be able to converse at a fairly fluent level.
Contact: Maureen Curd 01832 732 361 maureen@u3akettering.co.uk Walking Group - Despite the unpromising forecast and slightly mizzly weather to start with, a group of fourteen walkers set out from The White Horse, Stoke Albany, crossing the fields to the Church at Wilbarston and then striking out from the Village Hall towards East Carlton. Here we joined the road for a few hundred yards before turning off to go through more fields that eventually brought us back to Wilbarston and Stoke Albany and then to the pub, where we sat down to a very good lunch. Fortunately, soon after setting out it stopped mizzling and we were able (with a bit of imagination) to enjoy the views across the wide and sweeping landscape. Although it wasn’t an easy walk of just over 6 miles, and the grasses were very wet, it was well worth the effort.

Writers Group— After a session brimfull of ideas for 2016/2017 we got down to sharing our work. What was it like to experience bipolar disorder? We had a tightly woven short story empathising strongly with a someone suffering with the condition. We had an even shorter tale of a coathanger; a tale of loss and nostalgia. We had more nostalgia recreating the story behind a century-old photograph. No lack of variety there! Our congratulations to Elizabeth, runner-up in the National Short Story Competition 2016 on the subject of ‘Fire’ with her story ‘The Petting Zoo’. We were also able to share Sally’s contribution to the published anthology ‘Crack Another Yolk’ - opposite Roger McGough, no less! Finally, if you’re a beginner or returner to writing don’t be daunted by the quality of their writing. I started with the group just over a year or so ago and have had nothing but constructive support. I’ve a long way to go but I can already see the improvement in my own work thanks to their encouragement. If you write a journal or a diary, memoirs or stories, or would like to start, whatever your level you will be welcome to come and join us. We will be at the AGM, on Tuesday June from 1:30 pm at the Eden Centre, Montagu Street, Kettering. As usual our next meeting will be at the Parish Church Rooms in Kettering Market Place on the first Tuesday of the month, July 5. By all means bring your own work, but if you need some inspiration you can draw on Sally’s suggestion of ‘The moment I knew I had won’.
Water Colour Painting Classes - The Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from September to March. Our classes are held in the Parish Hall, Market Place, Kettering, NN16 0AL, from 1.15pm to 3.15pm. The Autumn Term starts again on 8th September 2016.
