16th August 2016 Kettering U3A Year 13 Newsletter 2 Today
Classic Cars by Steve Wardley
From the Chairman— Send up the white smoke: Habemus voluntariam! Sue Perkins has volunteered for the role of Groups Coordinator. No mental or physical duress was applied. Thank you, Sue. August is once again upon us, and it do feel ver’ like autumn already, summer having left but little trace. Are we downhearted? Perhaps a bit but, hey!, we’ve got some great things to look forward to in our U3A. Super speakers, tantalising topics, musical moments and – yes – Christmas competition! Read the Noticeboard and put your thinking caps onto creative mode. Not long to go, though such preparations need not preclude the wearing of Kinky Boots at next month’s meeting, nor Wee Willie Winkie outfits in October. Also on the Noticeboard is a brief explanation of the “Cynic’s Triangle” as presented at last month’s meeting. It seems my “reverse psychology” approach has provoked some interest after all. Happy Days.

Country Matters — For our July meeting a group of us met in Lubenham and had a guided walk around the village conducted by Noel Rogers, a friend of Jean and Derek, who was born in Lubenham and lived in the village until he joined the RAF when he was 15 years old. He told us the history of many of the buildings around the village which we all found very interesting. After lunch in The Coach and Horses several of us went to the river and watched Derek and Noel negotiate a steep bank in their wellies, paddling in the river looking for crinoid lily stems which are fossils shaped like stars – Noel, as a boy used to look for these stars with his school chums. After some time they found enough for everyone to take some home with them.

History - The subject at the 1st August meeting concerned the Tresham family who lived at Rushton Hall. They certainly were a very interesting family whose lives went up and down like a yo-yo. The family were Catholics and never changed this, but they were, in the main, were staunch Englishmen who supported the monarchy whoever was in power. Thomas Tresham was responsible for building many of the unusual buildings in Northamptonshire e.g. the Triangular Lodge, Rothwell Town Hall and Lyveden New Bield but he did not get involved in the politics that went on at court. Unfortunately his son was not so sensible and he of course got involved with the Gunpowder Plot. We learnt a great deal about how precarious life was during Tudor times for the gentry, trying to keep out of the plots and not always succeeding. Due to unforeseen circumstances, our speaker for September is unable to come but we are very pleased to say, a previous speaker, Frances Francis, (who gave a very interesting talk about the origins of Thrapston), has agreed to come and tell us about the origins and history of Earls Barton. This will be on the 5th September at the Counties Community Centre, Hertford Road, Kettering. Doors open at 2pm.
Gardening Group — Thursday 25 August Sulby Gardens, Sulby NN6 6EZ Unusual property covering 12 acres comprising Victorian kitchen garden, orchard, icehouse plus nature reserve, woodland, ponds, stream and wild flower meadows with butterflies, dragonflies and aquatic plants. Knit and Natter - It was another busy, noisy morning, Mary Earl was back from her triple bypass operation and looking very well. We gave Mary Wildman some little cardigans, blankets and hats for her to pass on to the prem unit at Kettering hospital. Michelle was teaching me the basics of crocheting, which wasn't easy as I am left handed and she is right but she is obviously a good teacher because I have now started to crochet a bag I was given (possibly a photo to follow when, or if I finish it) Our next meeting is on 22nd August.
Many thanks to all members who help prepare and clear away the meeting room etc. Their help is greatly appreciated. Lunch Club - The group had a very enjoyable lunch at “Exotic Dining”, an Indian restaurant situated in Newland Street, Kettering. Normally we meet at pubs so this was the first time we tried something different. We had a very enjoyable meal that was appreciated by all present. Some of us had not had an Indian meal before and were very pleased with the meal and the different flavours they experienced. Many thanks to Kathleen Banks for arranging the meal. The August lunch on the 23 August 2016 will be held at “The Lamb” in Little Harrowden. Please arrive about 12 noon for 12.30 pm meal. The cost of the meal will be two courses for £8.00 or three courses for £10.00. I am sure you will agree this is very reasonable in these days of rising prices, and we have thoroughly enjoyed our meals at The Lamb in the past. The lunch has been arranged for us by Elizabeth York and Kathleen Alton, and if you would like to book a place, please contact Elizabeth on 01536 726810. We are a very friendly group and if you would like to come and join us please do so. You will be made very welcome.
Musical Circles 1 — Our group has had so many convivial afternoons listening to music together over the past 15 years. Sadly, some of our members have passed away and we all miss their valuable contributions. We shall still continue to meet as friends and indulge our passion for good music.

Contact: Carole Bradbury 01536 516 587 cabrad@me.com Musical Circles 2 — We met at Barton Seagrave on a very hot afternoon, after I had given every one a fan we settled down to hear some music, first we listened to the overture of the Magic Flute, Burch,s Violin Concerto no1, Rachmaninov's Piano concerto no2 , Tchaikovsky,s 1812 Overture Smetata's The Moldon River from his My Country Suite, then Bach's Double Violin Concerto, then we switched to some song from the shows which included All I ask of you, don't cry for me Argentina and Music of the Night, ending with music from Swan Lake and Les Sylphides. Our next meeting is on the 17th of August
Looking at Churches — In July our church visit was to Great Harrowden. This church is famous for having the best preserved Doom painting in England. This is a large picture of Christ sitting on a rainbow, with Heaven on one side of him, and Hell on the other. During sermons lasting 3 hours it served to remind the congregation that they should live a godly life or the worst could happen. There was also a Priest Hole which was very interesting. Our guide, needed a torch to show us down to a tiny cave- like room in which a priest could hide during the turbulent times, and there was a tunnel leading through to Harrowden Hall which was nearby. We had the opportunity to go up to the Bell Tower, but as it entailed climbing a steep ladder, no-one attempted it. As it was a beautiful sunny day we were able to walk around the graves, and Jane, our guide told us some fascinating stories of people who were buried there. Afterwards our group went to different teashops to finish the afternoon in the sun. The next visit is to St. Giles, Medbourne, LE16 8EB on Wednesday, August 17th at 2.0pm. Donation £2 each. This is a very pretty Leicestershire village, with a stream running through it, and a nice teashop. On September 21st it will be a more professional tour, arranged by Cotterstock village, which will cost £5 each. This will include a tour of the church by historian Revd. David Bond, and tea in the village hall. I am hoping that someone will come forward to take on the ‘ Looking at Churches’ group in the new year, as there are still many more churches to see. I can give lots of help, but feel that after 6 years we need a new broom. Great Harrowden—Doom Painting

Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We have the use of a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. Just occasionally we cannot have the ASDA room and when this happens we have an alternative at a total cost of £10 per session. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. Because of the size of the ASDA room, we are now really at full capacity but could start a waiting list for anyone who has a good level of understanding of the language (we are currently studying the imperative and subjunctive of verbs) Contact: Bob Thorogood 01933 650 551 bob@rltservices.co.uk Singing For Pleasure — Singing A and B groups are on their summer break this month and will be resuming in September. Theatre Goers — At the moment, the group is trying to get a new group leader.
Safe Driving — The purpose of the Safe Driving Group is to assist members who would like to improve their driving skills. It will help them to deal more effectively with the current conditions on the roads and to build their confidence. It may even dispose of some bad driving habits! The driving sessions are on a one-to-one basis, so you’ll be able to progress at a pace that suits your personal needs. Initially you’ll be invited to take the leader for a half-hour drive so that your driving needs can be assessed. This can be on familiar roads, avoiding roads where you don’t feel comfortable and you can even bring someone with you if you wish. At the end of the drive we’ll discuss what you’d like to do next.
Trips & Visits - The trip to the Bank of England is now fully booked. We do have a waiting list just in case anyone drops out, so if you wish to be included on this list, please contact Eileen Mason on 01536 725925
There’s NO CHARGE for any of the driving sessions and NO TEST is involved. Several of the group members have chosen to take the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) Advanced Driving Test and all have passed, the most recent being Christine Strachan who passed her test last month. All the drives will be in your own car, apart from demonstration drives given by the Group Leader. A demonstration drive is available on request and is intended to give you a better understanding of driving techniques. Traffic accidents account for almost half of all accidental deaths in the UK - 95% of all road accidents are caused by driver error! Being a good driver means that you never stop learning. Improving your driving skills and becoming a better driver will not only make you feel safer – it will help to make your driving more enjoyable. Becoming a better driver involves reviewing and adapting your driving skills to keep pace with the everchanging road and traffic conditions. It’s not simply the speed of your reactions that determine whether you’re a safe driver, but your ability to identify and respond effectively to hazards. During his recent talk, “Being Safe and Confident on the Road”, Andy Collins reminded us of the C.O.A.S.T. acronym:
To those members who have already booked their places and who have paid their deposit, please send a cheque for the remaining £9.00 to Mrs E Mason, 5 Robin Close, Barton Seagrave, NN15 6SB by the end of August. Contact: Maureen Curd 01832 732 361 maureen@u3akettering.co.uk Walking Group - Fourteen walkers met at Souldrop on Wednesday, 3rd August for a circular walk of length 1 furlong short of 6 miles! Our walk took us via Sharnbrook, circumnavigating the Unilever Research Laboratory at Colworth Park. We had perfect weather for walking, sunny but with a breeze. The previous day's rain had little effect on the ground. Twelve of us stayed for lunch. We had a last minute change of lunch venue from the planned Bedford Arms, who were without electricity. The New Inn at Wymington were very accommodating at short notice and our empty plates were a testament to the excellent meal. The next walk will be on Wednesday, 7th September starting from The Old Friar, Twywell. We will meet at 10a.m for a 10.15 start. For any more information please contact either Jackie Rowson on 01536 515959 or John Sharp on 01536 518026.
Concentration: concentrate fully on driving and avoid distractions. Observation: be aware of what’s around you. Anticipation: anticipate what others might do – prepare for the worst case. Space: keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you – remember the two-second rule. Time: plan your journey so you don’t end up speeding towards your destination in order to arrive on time. Writers Group— Big, big thanks to Elizabeth Brassington! Why? In spite of the fact that she is still convalescing she was kind enough to host us in August while our usual venue was unavailable during the summer holidays. Because of those holidays we were short on numbers. This was made up for by Bob and Elizabeth who both shared some of their work: Bob with an extract from his forthcoming book and Elizabeth with a forthcoming competition entry. The ensuing critique was fascinating to a novice writer like myself. We also had some more good news from Sally. She has had a short story ‘Small Precious Things’ (which started as a piece written for the U3A writing group on the theme of ‘Holding the Fort’) accepted for publication in an anthology entitled ‘Baubles’ which comes out in November. Next meeting: usual place, Parish Church Rooms next to the Kino in the Market Place; usual time, 1st Tuesday of the month (6 September) 2.00—4.00pm. You may be a novice writer like me. You may have even written one or two books already. You may be somewhere in between. Whatever stage you are at, do contact us for details or just come along and join us. It looks as though we might have one or two new members coming along to the next, September, meeting so you won’t be alone.
