News — Interest Groups — Visits and Reports The Candle Works 18th October Our speaker for the October meeting is Marianne Perry. In addition to her presentation, she will be offering for sale a selection of candles. For those of you who love these decorative and beautiful items, it may be an opportunity to get an early start on Christmas presents for those difficult to buy for folks. I am sure that there will also be a wide selection of Christmas themed candles to brighten up our homes over the festive season. As part of our arrangement with Marianne, the quantity of candles sold on the day will determine her fee, so please do come prepared to buy up as much of her stock as possible. Thank you for your support. Linda Tyrrell Speaker Seeker

Bookworms — We have been reading "Year of Marvellous Ways", a story of an 89 year old woman and Francis Drake, a young soldier, back from the 2nd World War. Marvellous lives a solitary life, and it is her story. It is a whimsical story, steeped in Cornish folklore, and was enjoyed by the members of the Bookworms group. Our next book is "Winter in Madrid" by C J Sansom. Next meeting - September 28th.

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we now pay £1.50 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments. Canals & Waterways— In August the Canal and Waterways group had a pleasant trip to Barnwell Country Park. 20 members turned up for a walk around the park and lakes and admired the scenery, fauna and flora plus the birds and fish. Several had their photos taken under the giant black swan! The weather was perfect, not too hot. After the walk we sat and had a drink and a chat at the park before going to the Ship pub in Oundle for a really good meal. Carol.
Busy Needles and Banter — Busy Needles ladies continue to light up Africa, provide woolly warmth for newbies at KGH and have a jolly time doing it. Fourlegged friends are not forgotten, either. I still can’t resist buying new wools – especially when they are on offer – but of the leftovers nothing is wasted. Marian’s crocheted log-cabin quilts are famous across two continents. I sew them up and add fabric backing so if anyone has any leftover dress fabric, for example, we’d be more than grateful. Ditto bits of ribbon, strings of beads, unwanted charms, “tinsel” yarn for Marian’s twiddle muffs for dementia patients in residential care.
Harriet, modelling her pink cardigan, poses amid items recently knitted by Di, Denise and Mary.
Following our trip to Lincoln earlier in the year a few of us have returned to see the Poppies, which were part of the display in London. The design is the wave and is one of two pieces that are touring the country. They were bought by Lady Sainsbury and I think will be eventually placed at The Imperial War Museum as she has donated them to the nation. October 20th visit to Black Country Museum. November 17th Stanwick Lake 11.0am followed by Lunch for £10 and our planning meeting. If you are interested in joining us please let me know.

sunshine – on the way we had a quick peep at All Saints Parish Church which is probably the most impressive early Saxon building in the country, as quoted in John Betjeman’s book on Parish Churches of England and Wales. We then headed towards the site of Brixworth Railway Station, taking in the wonderful views along the way across the fields. After walking along the old railway track to the site of Spratton Station we returned via a ploughed field to Brixworth and enjoyed a very good value for money meal, which made it all the more enjoyable – 2 courses for £6.95. English Studies/Shakespeare— English Literature Studies meets on the second and fourth Monday afternoon of the month. We reached the end of Macbeth in July – pupils rewarded with a Globe performance of the play on DVD and, what’s more, were sufficiently confident to attend live performances of this and The Tempest. August meetings had to be cancelled for a variety reason, but we are back now with Chaucer’s Pilgrims on the way to Canterbury for a while. New visitors to the medieval world are welcome at any stage of the journey. The whole world of Eng Lit, however, is our oyster, from Webster to Wordsworth, Collins to Coleridge: you choose.

Lunch Club - Advance Notice. Christmas Lunch We are trying a different venue for the Christmas lunch this year. We will be going to The Stirrup Cup, Woodland Avenue in Barton Seagrave on Tuesday 6th of December 2016 at 12 noon for 12.30. Unlike previous years we will have an extensive choice of starter, main course and dessert with complimentary tea or coffee, all at the competitive price of £17.95. As the restaurant is opening especially for us minimum numbers will apply. To be sure of your place a deposit of £10 per person is required. The menu will be available shortly. On this occasion family and friends are more than welcome so why not use this opportunity to push the boat out. Make a note in your diary and watch this space.
Looking at Churches — Our August visit was to St. Giles Church, Medbourne, which is a very pretty village with a stream running through. Our guides made us very welcome, including giving us a cup of tea and biscuits, which was a bit embarrassing as we had booked to go to the Nevill Arms cafe afterwards. However, we managed two drinks plus biscuits and cakes very happily, especially as we were able to sit out in the sun for the second round of refreshments. The church was very wide, not the usual cruciform shape, as it has been altered over the years. In 17th century part of the church was used as the schoolroom, until the rector paid for a separate school building in 1869. There were still pews to sit in, but they are moveable for concerts etc. to rearrange the seating. There are two beautiful modern stained glass windows, made by local artist Derek Hunt. An unusual feature was a huge pendulum belonging to the church clock. This was swinging away in the archway leading to the bellropes, and interesting to watch. We were told about the Great Fire of Medbourne which caused extensive damage to the church. The fire was started by local farmers when a railway was built in Medbourne, as men were leaving the land to work for more pay on the railway. Our next visit is to Cotterstock PE8 5HH on Wednesday, September 21st at 2.0pm. This is an event arranged by Cotterstock village, and will be a tour of the church and tea afterwards in the village hall. The charge will be £5 per person. On October 19th it will be to Ashby St. Ledger, a village which has the house where meetings were held to plan the Gunpowder Plot – Catesby House. According to the internet the church is a church detective’s dream with wonderful wall paintings. I am still hoping that someone will come forward to carry on with the Looking at Churches group, as I have lots of places which have not been visited yet. I can give guidance. November will be my last one but it is such a good group with approximately 20 people each time, it will be a pity to finish altogether.

Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We have the use of a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. Just occasionally we cannot have the ASDA room and when this happens we have an alternative at a total cost of £12 per session. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. Because of the size of the ASDA room, we are now really at full capacity but could start a waiting list for anyone who has a good level of understanding of the language (we are currently studying the imperative and subjunctive of verbs) Contact: Bob Thorogood 01933 650 551 bob@rltservices.co.uk
Singing For Pleasure — After a well-earned break, the singing tubes of both Groups are already in good fettle for the "new term" that takes us up to Christmas, when we shall be coming together to entertain Kettering U3A at their Christmas Meeting on December 12th. Meanwhile, A Group have a date at Abbeyfields on September 20th, singing last term's Programme. B Group will have begun rehearsals for Christmas on September 9th of their contributions to the festivities. Both Groups meet fortnightly at Fuller, alternating with each other. For anyone interested in coming along to sing for pleasure (and singing is good for the health) please note that both Groups are open to members of both Ise and Kettering U3As; Kettering still has spaces and welcomes, indeed offers a plea for, men.

To make sure that members practise the techniques before the October meeting they were given a "homework" image to try (See below for the image as worked on by the Group Leader. it will be interesting to compare this interpretation with those of the members). Theatre Goers — At the moment, the group is trying to get a new group leader.
Safe Driving — Keep a weather eye out for the vulnerable With cycling proving to be a popular and convenient way to get around, it’s vital to stay alert when sharing the road with vulnerable road users. Here are some tips on what to look out for in summer traffic from IAM RoadSmart’s head of driving and riding standards Richard Gladman.
Trips & Visits - The trip to the Bank of England is now fully booked.
• Be aware of cyclists and scooters and remember to check your mirrors and blind spots before moving off and turning. Expect the unexpected. • Junctions are the most dangerous locations for cyclists. Drivers tend to see only the biggest vehicles and miss the smaller and unprotected cyclist. • Pay attention to what’s going on around you. Even though you’re looking for a chance to move off, you should also be prepared to stop. • Be patient. Driving aggressively and sounding your horn can cause confusion for cyclists and lead to accidents. • Cyclists will always be slower than your car so keep a constant watch on your approach speed to avoid running into the back of a cyclist. • Give riders space when overtaking. Give at least a car’s width as you overtake. • Try walking in their shoes. Consider riding a bicycle for some of your own journeys to get an understanding of some of the challenges cyclists face. • Look out for children cycling off the pavement and on to the road. In the summer they may be playing unsupervised and when the schools recommence they may also be on unfamiliar roads to their new school.
We do have a waiting list just in case anyone drops out, so if you wish to be included on this list, please contact Eileen Mason 01536 725 925
Walking Group - The walking group meets on the 1st Wednesday every month at different locations for a walk lasting 2 to 2½ hours starting at 10:00am. These walks are usually between 4 and 6 miles and taken at a relatively leisurely pace. The group generally end the walk with lunch at a local village pub. New members are very welcome; just call or email me using the contact details below. Please note that the next walk details might change (weather, pub issues etc.) so if you are not on my contact list please contact me to confirm the location. ”
Richard added: “With interest in cycling at an all-time high it’s inevitable more riders will take to the road to emulate their Olympic heroes. Until we have more extensive cycling infrastructure, responsible and safe driving is the only way to ensure the wellbeing of all road users.” If you’d like help with any driving related issues or to find out more about the Safe Driving Group, please contact either
This month our last walk was joined by eighteen members who met at Twywell on Wednesday, 7th September for a circular walk of 5 miles. We went through Twywell Hills and Dales Nature Reserve and across the fields towards the Cranfords, giving the bull and his 'ladies' a wide berth. After a short uphill spell along Duck End, we walked across fields to the north end of Twywell and back through the village for lunch at The Old Friar. An extremely muggy day for September meant we needed two short refreshment stops instead of the usual one.

Come as a Character from your book shelf, A Person from Panto, or maybe an Elf; Real or a Legend – dress up in a Hood For Rob or Red Riding
- either looks good.
In Sparkles or Spangles, in Seasonal guise. You could be the Tree - and walk off with a Prize!
We meet in The Parish Hall, Market Place, Kettering, from 1.15 pm to 3.15 pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month. We are very lucky to have Michael McGuire giving up his free time to help anyone wishing to improve their painting skills.
A modest Madonna (or outrageous in bling?) A dressing-gowned Joseph, Angel, Shepherd or King. But what of the “badduns”? Why there’s room for them, too. It wouldn’t be CHRISTMAS without someone to boo
If you are interested in joining us then please ring Jo Beaver on (0l933) 224474 or Barbara Goodall on (01536) 523259, or just come along to one of our classes. You must be a fully paid up member of the U3A.
Like Scrooge, Hook or John Silver and his parrot friendV The crocodile’s tickingV Good Luck you attend! If you need help or ideas ask Marian or Mary.

Writers Group— The American businessman Nido Qubein claimed that ‘Change brings opportunity’. Well, we’ll have the chance to find out if that is true because next month we will be trying out a new venue—Kettering Library. We’ll meet there at the usual time of between 1:45 and 2:00 pm on the first Tuesday of the month, 4 October, surrounded by enthusiastic readers so there’ll be plenty of opportunity for inspiration. If you’d like a subject to work on you might look at ‘Aches and Pains of Old Age’. However, if you’ve had enough aches and pains already and would rather forget them you are welcome to write on a subject of your own choice. Also, to lighten the mood, perhaps you could bring along a six-word memoir or two. A sixword memoir? It is the story of your life—or some part of it—told in exactly six words. Caesar’s ‘I came, I saw, I conquered’ for example, or even ‘Aches and Pains of Old Age’ itself. For the September meeting we had some humorous children’s verse, a short personal memoir, and a work for submission to the Mslexia Children’s Novel Competition 2016. As always, a wonderful range of styles and content. Whatever you write, whether it’s stories, memoirs or your family history: and whatever your experience, from novice to veteran, do come along and share. There’s something for everyone!
