13th December 2016 Kettering U3A Year 13 Newsletter 6 Today 13th December

Christmas Meeting U3A Singers plus Fancy Dress From the Chairman— Wassail, wassail, jolly wassail! and welcome to our Christmas meeting where the raffle is special, the refreshments free and the entertainment “home grown”. We trust you will join in with our carolling if only to “la la la” along with the tunes. You will find the words to Good King Wenceslas and While Shepherds Watched to hand on your seats – roughly one between two. Please, hand them back in at the end so we can reuse them. Ta. Leaders, Members and Visitors too, thank you all for your endeavours and contributions to the success of this U3A through 2016. Leaders, be advised that from next month there will be no boards displayed. Because of the state of them and thankless labour of putting them up, taking them down, etc etc, we shall be trying something different. Also if you need a table, we’d be more than ecstatic if you take responsibility for setting up and putting away yourselves – as indeed some already do, blessings upon you. Today, however, may joy come to our jolly wassail!

Canals & Waterways— In November we had a walk around Stanwick Lakes where Helen kissed a frog who unfortunately did not turn into a prince. But that’s life!

Bookworms — The Legacy of Elizabeth Pringle- a first novel from broadcaster Kirsty Wark. Elizabeth Pringle lives on the island of Arran, and bequeaths her house and its secrets to Anna. The story is narrated by Anna's daughter, Martha. It is a very moving story, thoroughly recommended. Because of Christmas, and commitments in January, we will not meet to discuss our next book until February. If anyone is interested in joining the group, give me a ring and I will tell you what we have in line for future months. Contact:

Pauline Parkin 01536 799 197 paulineparkin@hotmail.com

We then had a delicious lunch and worked out our next year’s program which you will find below.

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we now pay £1.50 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

Contact: Sue Macfarlane 01536 523754 Busy Needles and Banter — ““Charlie’s ladies” desire to thank everyone who has supported us this year with donations of wool, fabric, needles, buttons and squares. What our Marian can’t do with a box full of left-over oddments isn’t worth mentioning! Apart from crocheting magnificent blankets, Marian has also found time to produce a set of Christmas rosettes – every one unique - for Singing for Pleasure B Group. Di’s gorgeous pinny is the work of Janet, quilting queen. Di, Denise, Chris J and self have knitted clothes and blankets for the neonatal unit at KGH and for Life for African Mothers, on whose facebook page many of our items have been displayed! Our biggest success story, however, is that Chris C, who had never picked up a pair of needles in her life before joining us is now instructing others! Sue I-can’t-knit Perkins, having progressed to I’ll-stick-to-squares Perkins, still has trouble casting on BUT has produced enough squares to add to a blanket! Success all round!

I will need to know which trips you will be going on as it helps when making enquiries in regards to costs. I shall have a book with me at Stanwick Lakes in January or you can let me know in the usual manner. I definitely need numbers now for the Bruges trip and I will probably be looking at Eurostar. Creative Cards — We had a very busy time at the last meeting and actually ran out of time to complete our cards so took them home to finish them off. The finished Christmas Cards looked beautiful. It gives us a lot of pleasure to make our cards especially for our family and friends; certainly my family look forward to seeing what I have produced each year. At the December meeting we will be painting our own cards and envelopes so it should be a quieter meeting than normal as everyone will be concentrating. Although we do not have any spaces available, if you would like to put your name on a waiting list for any future vacancies please contact Maggi or Eileen.

Country Matters — For October’s meeting we met at The Harvester pub in Kettering for a walk around the nearby woods. The day was lovely and sunny, along the route we saw several different tree species and shrubs – a lot of them were in their full Autumnal glory and looked particularly impressive against the blue sky. We heard lots of birds but were not lucky enough to see any. Derek also explained about the old trackway from the ancient, possibly Roman road part of which passed through the woods and is situated between Little Stanion to Hallwood Road in Kettering. The trackway is visible on maps and parts of it can still be walked on. After arriving back at the pub and ordering our meals we were very lucky to be inside by then as the ‘Heavens opened’ spectacularly and we enjoyed the full glory of a double rainbow.

Card Making — It was lovely to welcome two new members to this enthusiastic group. The ladies came with their scissors and enthusiasm. We made a layered Christmas card using an old CD as background. The next card was an embossed card. A lovely discussion about Christmas cards then followed. We will be making gift boxes in December. English Studies/Shakespeare— Is (are?) currently on Christmas break due to the necessity of my being in at least two places at once on our regular Mondays (2nd and 4th in the month). Since we began we have tackled Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Chaucer’s General Prologue to the Canterbury Tales and The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale, Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and have dipped into the work of John Clare and Wordsworth. The new term, starting on January 9th, will see us in the world of Malory’s Morte d’Arthur. Our sessions are fun; there’s no essay-writing involved; texts are provided. If you feel like joining us on our exploration of the infinite world of “ ‘proper’ Eng Lit without pain”

English Country Dancing — We continue to have fun with our dancing. Our last meeting before Christmas is on 14th Dec. Jan.12th is the date we begin our meetings for 2017. All are welcome to join us on 2nd & 4th Weds. of each month 10.30-noon at St. Andrew Church Hall. Contact:

It’s been over a decade since Rosemary initiated this event and it is a tribute to her original vision and to Sue and Janet’s subsequent leadership that it has continued so successfully and for so long. As 2016 comes to an end, thanks to all three of you and to everyone else who supports the group and a Happy Christmas and best wishes for the New Year from the rest of us. As usual, next month’s meeting is on the first Friday of the month (6 January), same time (10:00 to about 11:30), same place (the Kino Lounge, Market Place, next door to Mr Ray’s). History - At the November meeting we were given a very interesting talk by Delia Thomas on The Gunpowder Plot. Guy Fawkes is the person everyone remembers, but the ringleaders actually came from Northamptonshire and included Robert Catesby from Ashby St Ledger and Francis Tresham from Rushton Hall. The culprits were caught very quickly and some of them suffered dreadful deaths. At the 5th December meeting we will be hearing from Ian Addis who will be revisiting the history of the Kettering Parks and telling us more about Charles Wicksteed. We meet on the first Monday afternoon in the month from 2pm onwards at the Counties Community Centre in Hertford Road, Kettering (near the Pytchley Road) and all are welcome. The cost if £2.00 per person which covers the hire of the hall, the speaker and also a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits. We are busy planning the talks for 2017 and these will be published in due course. The subject to the 2nd January 2017 will be Lord Beatty, the last naval hero who took part on the Battle of Jutland. He lived in Northamptonshire at Dingley Hall. If any U3A members are able to recommend speakers, please contact Eileen or Maggi. Thank you.

French Conversation - We tried a new venue on the 18th of November. The traveller's room at the station and paid £10.00 for the 2 hours. It was very cosy and central so we decided to make it our monthly venue. We talk about how one celebrates Xmas and New year in different countries. Very interesting as we learnt that St Nicholas arrives on the night of the 5/6 of December with his helpers. We still have 2 vacancies if someone is interested in joining our group. As the Newsletter will be printed earlier this month, the Christmas Lunch at The Stirrup Cup in Barton Seagrave will also have taken place and we are sure it will be equally as enjoyable. The venue for the January Lunch Club will be at our old favourite The Red Lion at Broughton. It will take place on Tuesday 24th January 2017, arriving at 12 noon for 12.30 pm. If you would like to come, (and you will be very welcome if you do), you will be able to book your place and select your menu at the monthly meeting on the 17th January 2017. The King and Queen Have Moved On... Long live the Queen

Looking at Churches — In November I chose for my last church All Saints, Lubenham. In my youth I used to cycle with my sister, from Mkt.Harborough to Lubenham to see the Queen and her young family walk to church from nearby Lubenham Hall, where they were staying with friends, so it has happy memories.

On Wednesday Nov 16th the "Looking at Churches" group visited Lubbenham near Mkt Harborough. This was the last visit for the group to be organised by Janet & Roy Clements. I am sure all of the group members will join me in thanking Janet & Roy for all they have done over the past few years to make our visits so enjoyable, and for finding so many interesting buildings; even including Hindu mosques. Not only do they liaise with the church to welcome us, they even find a watering hole afterwards ! The group is

The church has very big enclosed pews and we could hardly see over the top. The wealthy members of the congregation would sit in the central aisle, servants in the side aisles, and poor people stood in the side chapel and followed the service through a hole in the wall. Also another small hole in the wall on the other side was for lepers to peer through. There are medieval wall paintings which were revealed from under the whitewash during restoration of the church, and there is still a three tier pulpit for the priest to preach from. The present altar is a really heavy carved table which came from Lubenham Hall. Also from the Hall is a sanctuary chair which is said to have been used by Charles 1st on the eve of the Battle of Naseby. The whole village has many interesting buildings and it would be good to walk around there in the summer. We went off to a delightful teashop called Totty Teas, after our church tour, where we were made very welcome. I now have great pleasure in passing on the organising job to Janet Flower and I wish her every success, as we still have many churches left to visit and so much history to discover. In the six years that we have done so far, we have been to 60 churches and 2 Hindhu mosques. Some of the group have been in it from the start and I thank you all so much for your support.

always well supported which speaks volumes of the way it is run, and to Janet & Roy's friendly approach .

The next church is Loddington on Wednesday, January 18th 2017 at 2.0pm. The visit will include a tour, tea and cake ÂŁ4.00 per person For information please contact Janet Flower.

In the New Year Janet Flower will be taking up the reins, and I am sure she will continue to get the groups support. Thank you for stepping into the breach Janet !! Again, on behalf of all the group. Many thanks to Janet & Roy for all their hard work.

Roy and I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and Good Health in the New Year. Best wishes, Janet Clements

Scrabble— There is interest in restarting the Scrabble Group.

Photography Group — A couple of members could not make it to the November meeting so we were a bit light on the ground. However, we did manage to get some Photoshop revision done, plus a look at one or two techniques that were new to those attending. Straightening images using the "Rotate>Custom" command, selecting areas of an image with the "Marquee" tool and the "Magnetic Lasso" tool proved interesting, and then the familiar Levels, Colour Curves, Gradient, Cloning and Conversion To Black And White were all brought into play.

If interested please contact Sue, our Groups Coordinator Contact: Sue Perkins 01536 519438 lazygirl_tresham@yahoo.co.uk Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We have the use of a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. Just occasionally we cannot have the ASDA room and when this happens we have an alternative at a total cost of £12 per session. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. Because of the size of the ASDA room, we are now really at full capacity but could start a waiting list for anyone who has a good level of understanding of the language (we are currently studying the subjunctive mood of verbs) Several members will not be available in December so there will be no meeting of the group in the remainder of this year. Instead we are looking at early January 2017. In theory it should be Monday January 2nd, but that might be too close to New Year's Day for some, so Monday 9th January could be a better bet. Group members - watch out for more information nearer the time.

Safe Driving — Take extra care on the roads: tips from IAM Roadsmart The following tips give advice on those often overlooked road safety issues on how to stay safe driving and riding on the road, from IAM RoadSmart’s head of driving and riding standards Richard Gladman: Slow down around schools and in residential areas. This may not be rocket science, but it’s easily forgotten whilst rat-running on the morning commute. If you want to be on time simply leave earlier. Remember we have speed limits, not targets and in busy traffic ’20 is often plenty’.

Singing For Pleasure — A very Merry Christmas from the members of both Singing Groups to one and all. Congratulations are in order to B Group, which is now a full year old and growing steadily in membership. Today, singers from both groups are joining together at this Christmas meeting, A Group have had their Christmas lunch and are well into their seasonal round of performances. Thank you, everyone for all your musical endeavour.

Seatbelts are a must. If you are the driver it’s your duty to ensure all passengers are wearing their seatbelts. Passengers over 14 are responsible for their own seatbelts, but it is you as the driver who will be stopped. Take charge and tell them all to ‘belt up’. With that in mind, loose items in a car can become projectiles in a crash as can an unrestrained passenger. Keep your car tidy and store bags or tools in the boot. Jumping red lights - we’ve all seen drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists do this, but the traffic lights are there for all of our safety. If they have been green for some time, plan for them to change and be ready to stop.

As none of these achievements would have been possible without our wonderful accompanists, special thanks must be given to Carol, Linda, Janet on drum,of A Group, and to Marian and Maddie of B Group. We reconvene for the “new term” in January: A Group on the 6th and B Group on the 13th. The latter welcomes new members, including men! Wassail!

Keep to the speed limit - rushing from junction to junction or hold up to hold up is often counterproductive. Why ‘hurry up to wait’? A 50 mile journey at 80mph will save you at most six minutes compared to the same distance at 70mph. Is it worth the stress and the extra fuel? The dangers of hand-held mobile phones are well known, but taking or making calls by Bluetooth can be just as distracting. Switching the phone off when you get behind the wheel allows you to concentrate fully on perfecting your driving skills. Dazzle from low sun is a factor in more crashes than dazzle from headlights. Keep your windscreen clean and don’t put those sunglasses away just yet. It is legal for motorcyclists to filter through traffic so give them space and never try to deliberately block them. Check carefully before changing lanes. Richard said: “Most delays on our main roads are caused by accidents and breakdowns. Prevention is so much easier than cure. Check the car over before your journey, keep your distance, manage your speed and we can all have an incident-free week, year and lifetime.” www.iamroadsmart.com

Once you’ve had that brisk Boxing Day walk and collapsed back into that comfortable chair, don’t just sit back and watch the telly! Grab your notebook and pen and start writing! Last month we had some seasonal subjects to whet your appetite: * Under the Mistletoe * That Unforgettable Christmas * A Christmas Stocking If you’ve mined and worked out those lodes, how about dreaming up a New Year ghost story? Perhaps a rueful look at New Year resolutions, both kept and broken, or your own take on new starts as 2017 rolls in. Whatever you decide, we look forward to sharing it with you on the first Tuesday (3 January), at the same place (Kettering Library) and at the same time (from 1:45 to start at 2pm, until about 4pm). If you can’t find us just ask at the reception desk - we’ll let them know where we are.

Glenis Simpson is painting a boating scene in water colour but, this is her tea-time break.

Picture is of Ernie Clement also painting a boating scene, in water colour, and on his tea-time break. Contact: Jo Beaver on 01933 224 474 or Barbara Goodall on 01536 523 259
