21st February 2017 Kettering U3A Year 13 Newsletter 8 Today Northamptonshire

Search & Rescue - Paul Marlow

From the Chairman— February 10th. Late afternoon. Outside large snowflakes drift by my study window. The ground is as yet too wet for snow to lie but it may be a different story by the morning. This morning, however, we had both snow and bright early-spring sunshine. I had lunch out with U3A friends and before that an uplifting singing session with other friends I have come to know through KU3A. We are learning and improving and thinking about what we would like to include in our programme for this year’s AGM and beyond that to next Christmas. Other nascent and thriving Groups are also moving forward, looking forward to the coming months. At Joan Rolfe’s funeral three weeks ago a most generous sum was raised in her memory: the Committee is now considering how best to use that sum to commemorate Joan’s life and invaluable contribution to this U3A. What a tragedy then if the AGM turns out to be a wake, and Christmas for us never comes. If we have no Treasurer before June our future will be a different story; then this so successful U3A will have to close down. We also need a volunteer to be Chairman but the urgent, vital priority is for a Treasurer. Someone. Please. Do not let Joan’s, and Maureen’s too, memorial be the end of what they worked so hard for.

Next meeting - the fourth Wednesday of the month, when we shall be watching the DVD. Obituary JANET WATSON It is with sadness that we have to announce the death of Janet last week. Janet and John were among the founder members of Kettering U3A, Janet's membership number being 26. They were enthusiastic members supporting several groups including Whist, Bridge, Cardmaking and going on many trips in the early years. Sadly John died 2 years ago but Janet continued to support the groups and also joined the Canasta club with the Ise U3A. In our days at Ise Community Centre Janet took on the role of "meeter- greeter". So many members would have had their first impressions of the organisation from her. She was a valuable asset to our U3A and will be missed by her friends. Now reunited with John. RIP

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we now pay £1.50 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments. Busy Needles and Banter — Despite being somewhat depleted in number lately – owing to illnesses, foreign travel and other commitments (Chris Jones we miss you) – we have been no less industrious than heretofore. Marian’s crocheted blankets and coats (all breeds from Chihuahuas to Great Danes catered for) have prompted letters of warm appreciation from Wood Green; other blankets, Di’s jumpers and Mary’s (commissioned) knitted dolls have been rapturously received by Life for African Mothers; blankies for preemies along with small cardigans passed to us from Knit and Natter are very much welcomed by staff at KGH neo-natal unit. Once again, thank you so very much to all our supporters for their donations of wools, buttons etc. Especial thanks this month to Joan Rolfe’s family for their generosity in this regard. Joan is sadly gone from us but is still continuing her massive contribution to KU3A. By the way, as Chris J is no longer able to come to our sessions, though she is still knitting!, we have room for a “little’un” round my table.

Country Matters — 15 of us enjoyed a walk round East Carlton Park to view the snowdrops of which there were plenty. Even though it was only 2 degrees with a hint of snow in the air, we were soon warm and enjoyed the views around the park and across the Welland Valley. Afterwards, some went to the café for coffee whilst ten of us enjoyed a meal in Wetherspoon’s Samuel Lloyd pub in Corby. Next month’s meeting will be at Waddenhoe meeting on 9 March, 2017 at The King’s Head pub at 10.15 to order lunch and use the pub’s facilities ready for 10.30 start. Contact:

Card Making — We had a January sale. The group used up card packs that I had prepared last year. Great fun was had with layered cards, making flowers and some decoupage. It still amazes me how the group is given the same materials and produce such different cards. New members welcome to this group, the only experience needed is being able to bring a pair of scissors and lots of enthusiasm. I would like to say a huge Thank you to the family of the late Joan Rolfe who donated her card making equipment to the card making groups. I have also been given finished tapestries, tapestry frames and wool from Joan's family. If anyone in the U3A, or have a friend, who would like these please contact me.

Discussion Group — The next meeting March 14, at the Parish Church Hall at the usual time of 2pm. The subject put forward at the Jan meeting by Janet Chivers will be "Forgiveness". Can you really do it? or is there the tiniest feeling of distrust, resentment. Will you be able to forget and never raise the subject ever again? Are you an angel or an hypocrite? If the one you are forgiving is a member of the group and you doubt your ability to do it, then please check your weapons at the door before entry. Remember to have some extra material at hand in case the subject fails to last the session.

Family History - U3A member Joe Fletcher gave us a fascinating talk on how he traced his immigrant German ancestors to present day. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the February PopIn; ‘proper poorly’ was my excuse! During Friday afternoon, Tom kindly telephoned me saying there was a good number and I thank each and everyone of you that make this ‘monthly meet’ a success. I’m pleased that Ilsa and Marjorie were able to come along and I look forward to meeting you both next time. Thank you Tom for this: ‘The First Friday Frolic turned out to be just that with a great turnout. We were delighted to welcome Ilsa and Marjorie who were popping in for the first time. There was lots of cheerful chat on subjects ranging from family history to holidays and everything in between. The Kino staff as usual looked after us with their customary care. History -

There is no report this month on the March meeting. Unfortunately, the one thing that Group Leaders dread happened. Our Speaker was unable to attend due to a family emergency in Kent and had been unable to notify us beforehand. Many thanks to Ray Bradbury for stepping in and giving us a talk on the results of his family history research which proved very interesting and amusing. The presentation at the 7th April meeting will be “The Street Names of Kettering”. The History group meets on the afternoon of the first Monday in the month at the Counties Community Centre in Hertford Road, Kettering. Doors open at 2pm and the talk starts at approximately 2.15pm following the provision of tea, coffee and biscuits. A charge of £2.00 is made to cover the expenses. Many thanks to our members who put out and put away the chairs for the meeting and particularly to Muriel who looks after the Refreshments. We look forward to seeing any new members at the next meeting.

Looking at Churches — Twenty three of us visited St.Leonards Church Loddington on the 18th January and we were given an informative tour by Reverend John. The church is named after a 6th century nobleman and was mentioned in the Domesday book. The church is Grade II listed and is made of local ironstone, limestone and Collyweston slate. The imposing tower is 125ft tall and has three bells. Pews to the right of the nave are late 16th century and the font is Norman and made of Caen stone although the cover is from 1859 when major renovations were made to the church. There are some lovely stained glass windows from the Whitefriars glassworks and a William Morris window, one of only two in the county. Our visit was rounded off by tea/ coffee and cakes in the church.

Knit and Natter - Meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday The pictures are of twiddle muffs, we are knitting these for patients with Alzheimers. They have buttons, ribbons, bells and elastic etc inside which helps them with their fidgety fingers. We have given some to the Northampton hospital and Elm Bank care home. If anyone knows of anyone that would benefit from one of these please contact me. Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523 867 annette.chidwick@tiscali.co.uk

The next two visits are as follows:Wednesday 15th February 2017 2pm St.Andrew’s Church Cranford NN14 4AD, a redundant church looked after by The Churches Conservation Trust. Wrap up warmly as the church will not be heated.

Lunch Club - The Lunch Club enjoyed a lovely meal at The Red Lion, Broughton, and were delighted to welcome new members of the U3A to the meal. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves with plenty of chatting, laughter and enjoyable eating. The March Lunch Club will be held at “The Old Friar” in Twywell village which is another very popular venue for our group. You can book your place either at the March monthly meeting or by telephoning Maggi or Sue (see numbers below) and copies of the menu will also be available at the meeting so that you can choose your meal. The cost will be £10.50 for two courses or £11.50 for three courses (to be confirmed) On the day please arrive at 12pm for 12.30pm. We are a friendly group and will welcome any new or old U3A members who wish to join us. It will give you a chance meet some of your fellow U3A members and make new friends.

Wednesday 15th March 2017 2pm A guided tour of Parson Latham’s Hospital Almshouse 24 North Street Oundle PE8 4AL. The hospital was founded in 1611 and is Grade II listed with a beautiful garden. Car parking is available. Afterwards there will be afternoon tea at the village hall Main Street Cotterstock PE8 5HD. We enjoyed lovely homemade cakes here last September. The cost for the tour and tea afterwards is £6.00 per person, tour only is £5.00 per person. Take a look at the charity’s informative web site www.parsonlathamscharity.org.uk I will email all members of the group on my contact list the week before a visit to ascertain numbers together with any additional or a change of information. Scrabble— At the moment only four people have given their names forward and a venue has yet to be found for a Friday (my preferred day) that is available and cheap enough. If indeed any one else wants to join, please contact me as at the moment it does seem that there is not enough desire to warrant a new group.

Musical Circles 2 — For our first meeting of the new year the music group listened to a selection of pieces from composers mainly with a name starting with ' B '. First up was Bach with his Concerto for Violin and Oboe, followed by Borodin's String Quartet No 2. Then followed the Festival Overture by Brahms and another Bach, his Overture Suite No 3. We then listened to a Piano Sonata by Beethoven, his No 8, Opus 13. Then came a firm favourite of the group, Bruch's Violin Concerto No 1. We then came a little closer to modern times with an offering by Bernstein of Candide and Britten's Four Seasons Interlude. We then broke for light refreshments of tea, coffee and hot chocolate with biscuits before starting on part two. This comprised Schubert's Ave Maria and the Karelia Suite of Sibelius. We ended an enjoyable afternoon listening to some gorgeous music with the Voices of Spring by Strauss. Nice one Hazel. The next meeting will be on the 18th January 2017.

Contact: Tony Loft 01536 585166 or 07725 190518 tonyloft@me.com Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We have the use of a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. Just occasionally we cannot have the ASDA room and when this happens we have an alternative at a total cost of £12 per session. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. Because of the size of the ASDA room, we are now really at full capacity but could start a waiting list for anyone who has a good level of understanding of the language

Contact: Eileen Mason 01536 725925 edmason5@yahoo.co.uk Photography Group — The Photography Group met on a chilly but fairly bright February afternoon at Wadenhoe. The intention was to experiment with long exposures using neutral density filters. I do not think any masterpieces were produced because of the steep learning curve encountered when trying to use the various cameras manually, without relying upon the autoeverything approach. Much was learned however, and hopefully not forgotten by the next meeting! A warming drink in the excellent Tea Rooms rounded off the afternoon. The next meeting will be on Monday 6th March. As always, we await the weather forecast nearer the time. If promising we shall be outside photographing again, probably around the mill between Great Addington and Ringstead (Janet's suggestion). If the weather is poor we shall have an indoor still-life/macro/table top session - another excellent way to get away from "auto" and really learn about those camera controls to get what you want and not what the camera thinks you want.

Safe Driving — During the past four years we’ve been able to assist over forty U3A members with their driving and some have gone on to pass the IAM advanced driving test. However, over recent months we’ve had very little interest so we’ve decided to suspend the group. We may consider re-starting the group in the future if there’s sufficient interest. Roy and Steve Sing (and laugh) Out Loud — (formerly Singing for Pleasure Group B) has come of age and now has its own name and a new member! Welcome, Martin. We are still open to anyone as long as he or she is a member of a U3A. If you fancy singing but aren’t sure that you can, worry not; we have members that are living proof that anyone can sing! Can’t read music? Not a problem. We sing anything from “folk tunes we learned at school” through show tunes to operetta, mostly in unison, some in easy harmony. Singing is brilliant for health – heart, lungs, confidence and spirits all benefit. We meet fortnightly – alternating with Singing for Pleasure - at Fuller Church Rooms on a Friday from 10am to 11.45am.

We need a volunteer to take over as treasurer at the AGM or we will have to close your U3A. Simple as that ! Notice Boards — The committee have decided that due to lack of able bodied volunteers to help set up each month and bring the large notice boards from upstairs and return them after the meeting, we will run without them. Richard has created A4 posters for each group which will be displayed in plastic holders instead. Some are below. Any constructive comments and better still, able bodied help would be welcome.

Contact: Christine Strachan 01536 515 730 cestrachan1@gmail.com Walking Group - The walking group meets on the 1st Wednesday every month at different locations for a walk lasting 2 to 2½ hours starting at 10:00am. These walks are usually between 4 and 6 miles and taken at a relatively leisurely pace. The group generally end the walk with lunch at a local village pub. New members are very welcome; just call or email me using the contact details below. For our February walk we planned a circular walk from The Stag’s Head in Maidwell. This 5.8 mile route facilitates some wonderful views over this lovely part of Northamptonshire away from the traffic. Unfortunately on the day (Wednesday 1st) it was raining but that failed to put off the 19 of us who headed out in the direction of Haselbach. The rain and mist sadly hid those gorgeous landscapes from our view but we continued on our way past Dale Farm and Maidwell Lodge before looping back towards Lamport when the rain finally let up, passing the raging torrents that only days before had been almost empty ditches and streams to return to our start point via the Brampton Valley Way to our well-deserved lunch. Our March walk will be on Wednesday 1st March and will be announced by email the week before to all members of the group on my contact list as the start point has not been fixed as the weather may well affect this. If you are not on my list and you would like to join us please give me a call a few days before the walk. please give me a call a few days before the walk. Writers Group— First things first! We missed Tom Piercy this month as he has been unwell. We all wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him at our next meeting. The group meet in Kettering library on the first Thursday of the month between 1.45 and 4.00 pm. At present we have approximately 5-6 members which means we are almost at capacity but please do not let this deter you as people often drop in and out of the group. We welcomed a new member this month, Candice who has already contributed a piece on a past holiday experience. Two members had chosen to use last months suggestion as inspiration entitled, “ a stranger comes to town.” Sally submitted a very clever example of alternative use of language as metaphor (if I have understood it right) which was very thought provoking. Other members continue to work on their chosen pieces. There are two titles to motivate us this month, Two words or phrases that make me laugh. A piece of music you love and the memories it evokes. These are only suggestions and everyone is welcome to bring other material along. All levels of experience are welcome so if you have always wanted to write please come along and join us. If you have any questions or require further information, for this month only, please contact Bob Thorogood on 01933 650 551.
