From the Chairman— Spring being well into its stride, and Easter now past, it falls to me to give formal notification of 2017’s Annual General Meeting to be held on June 20th. According to our Constitution, the posts of Chairman and Vice Chairman are tenable for up to three years. Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary must be nominated and elected individually; other Committee Members may be nominated and elected for individual posts or en bloc and their responsibilities allotted / shared at the first Committee Meeting immediately following the AGM. I shall have completed my three year tenure in June and must stand down. Our current Treasurer is also standing down but, as I mentioned last month, Candice Rice has volunteered to be nominated and thus has been formally co-opted on to the Committee. Tony Loft was also formally co-opted at our March Committee meeting, and I have hopes of formally co-opting another volunteer at our next Committee meeting. If you wish to volunteer or to nominate another member there are forms in the newsletter, to be returned by May 27th. Fuller details of the Programme for the June meeting will be published in the May Newsletter.

Canals & Waterways— I shall not be at the U3A meeting this month as I shall be sunning myself with seventeen others of the group in Liverpool.
Creative Cards — The group spent an enjoyable meeting creating Art Deco cards. This style is very popular in card making circles at the moment but the finished results are always stylish and look very professional. Those present were delighted with the results and look forward to making further Art Deco cards. Although the group is full at the moment as we are only a small group, if anyone wishes to put their name down to fill any future vacancies, please do so.
For those of you coming to Liverpool, can we all meet at 2.0ish at the Strand Travelodge, we can then go on the open-top bus ride, (weather permitting). My mobile is 07854 866 724 if you are delayed for any reason. There has been a change of plan for Thursday April 20th. We had planned to do a bluebell walk, but as many of you also belong Derek's Country matters it has been requested that you join this group on the 20th. I hope this is ok . when he joined age 14, he resigned in his twenties to concentrate on trying to fly. He developed a flying machine that was made of wood and canvas and he would hang in the middle trying to manoeuvre the machine. His sister assisted him by sewing the material around the frame of the flying machine. Percy was convinced that with mechanical help giving the machine the thrust it needed, he would be able to go up in the air and fly even if only for a short distance. Eventually he developed a machine he called “The Bat”. He had a lot of support from friends, particularly the owner of Stanford Hall on the Leicester/Northants border and it was decided that he would attempt to fly at Stanford Hall. Unfortunately the weather that day was very poor and his first attempt was unsuccessful. He decided that he would try again and this time he successfully took off into the air. Suddenly there was a snap, the plane turned over and Percy and “The Bat” fell to the ground. Percy was badly injured and died shortly after – he was 32 years of age. There is a memorial to Percy in the Memorial Field at Stanford Hall and a replica of the Bat is kept in the stable block at the Hall. Roy’s talk was excellent, he goes to a lot of trouble in his preparation and is one of the best speakers we have had. We can thoroughly recommend him to other groups. He will return later in the year to give us a talk on Amy Johnson. The next History Group will meet on Monday 1st May (yes, it is a Bank Holiday but we will still be meeting) and the talk will concern the sad tale of HMS Eurydice. Doors open at 2pm with an entry fee of £2.00 to cover the tea or coffee and our expenses. Please come along if you are interested in history.

Looking at Churches — On Wednesday 15th March
Knit and Natter - This is a photo of Jackie with one of her twiddlemuffs she has knitted for dementia
twenty four of us were taken on a tour of Parson Latham’s Hospital Alms house in Oundle which is managed by a board of Trustees situated in the heart of Oundle, East Northamptonshire. A charitable organisation established in the 1600s, today it offers independent living for up to 11 senior female residents who are single, widowed or divorced from the parish of Oundle in an adapted Grade I listed building with a beautiful garden. More recently they have built a couple of one bedroom bungalows. Two of the residents very kindly opened up their homes to us. The residents make a monthly contribution towards the cost of living there. A church service is held once a month and there is also a visitor’s bedroom where a relative can stay for a nominal sum. The Almshouse is a hidden gem and some Oundle residents are unaware of its existence. Nicholas Latham, the founder of the charity, was born in 1548 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire. His father was Keeper of the Great Park for Lord Edward Montagu of Boughton House, considered today to be one of Britain’s grandest and best preserved stately homes. When quite young, his family moved to Rushden, attending the Grammar School at Higham Ferrers, then becoming a scholar of Queen’s College, Cambridge. Returning to Northamptonshire, he became Rector of St Andrew’s Church, Barnwell at age 21. He remained in Barnwell under the patronage of Lord Montagu until his death aged 72 in April1620. Parson Nicholas Latham must have been a man of great compassion and determination, whose response to the distressing state of the poor commonly found in 16th/17th century Britain galvanised him into action. Using a large part of his annual stipend of £160.00 per annum, he spent almost half his life establishing almshouses (known as hospitals) and schools in the local district. Shrewdly, he also purchased property and land to generate income to sustain these ventures – being a hospital in Oundle and Barnwell, and schools in Barnwell, Oundle, Brigstock, Hemington and Weekly. Once a year the Trustees had to walk the land they had purchased but now this is done in suitable motor vehicles. Afterwards we travelled to Cotterstock where we enjoyed wonderful homemade cakes and plenty of tea and coffee once again in the village hall.
patients. They have knitted and given them to homes that have dementia patients, they have buttons, zips, bells and many more different items inside for the patient to twiddle with. Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523 867 annette.chidwick@tiscali.co.uk Lunch Club - The Group ventured a little further out of Kettering for the March lunch club. We visited The Bell at Little Addington which is under new management. The choices were a couple of dishes from the a la carte menu or a buffet lunch. The buffet lunch consisted of a Salad starter following by a selection of three hot dishes for the main course. There was a Beef dish, Chicken dish and vegetarian dish. The food was excellent as was the service. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Everyone said how much they had enjoyed the food and it will certainly warrant a return visit. The next Lunch Club will be on Tuesday 25th April 2017 and is being organised by Elizabeth York and Kathleen Alton. The venue is possibly going to be the Sondes Arms at Rockingham, but the final details will be available at the U3A monthly meeting on the 18th April. If any new U3A members or long standing U3A members you will be made very welcome.
Our next two visits are as follows:Wednesday 26th April - St. Mary The Virgin Maidwell Northamptonshire NN6 9JF - £2.00 per person. Please note this visit is taking place on the last Wednesday of the month not the usual third. Wednesday 17th May – The Church of St.Peter & St.Paul Harrington NN6 9NX followed by refreshments in the village hall - £4.00 per person. I will email all members of the group on my contact list the week before a visit to ascertain numbers together with any additional or a change of information. Musical Circles 2 — The programme for the March meeting of Musical Circles 2 did not really have a theme, other than possibly "Music I Like". It began with the rousing "O Fortuna" from Orff's "Carmina Burana", then the lively Elizabethan dance tune "Green Garters" played by The Musicians Of Swanne Alley, Ockeghem's "Au Travail Suis", two "Lyric Pieces" for piano by Grieg, the "Rondeau" from Mozart's "Violin Concerto No.4", Satie's "Gymnopedies No.1" played, not on the piano, but on the guitar. Then Ian Bostridge sang Quilter's "Now Sleeps The Crimson Petal", followed by Debussy's "Prelude A L'Apres-Midi D'un Faune", the opening movement from Liszt's "Piano Concerto No.1", and just before the break we heard William Mundy's "Beatus Et Sanctus" sung by The Sixteen. Fully refreshed we resumed with a Schubert piano impromptu (Op.90 No.3), the opening movement from Beethoven's "Trio for Violin, Viola and Violoncello Op.9 No.1", "Neptune" from Holst's "Planet Suite" (even though it is no longer a planet..), and Liszt's "Song Without Words" arrangement of Schubert's "Standchen". The afternoon began with a rousing piece of music and so it was only right to finish with one too. In this case it was the second movement of Beethoven's Symphony No.9. The group's next meeting will be on Wednesday 19th April at 2.00pm Contact: Eileen Mason 01536 725925 edmason5@yahoo.co.uk

swans, coots, grebes, terns, geese, pochards, tufted ducks, moorhens and other bird species. It enabled us to shake the dust off the long telephoto lenses in a relaxed and sedentary position. However, we did then walk to the feeding station to see the finches, tits and buntings, but this was a bit disappointing in terms of bird numbers, lighting and background. We then walked on the old railway line to see where the sand martins had made nests in the wall of a loading ramp, although again it was disappointing that no sand martins seemed to want to put in an appearance. Our May meeting will be to look at photographing flowers "in the field". Bluebells should be about by then, which will be the starting point. There is a problem with dates, and the actual venue is still to be decided, so group members - as always - watch your e-mails.
Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Normally the teaching is a joint enterprise between Bob Thorogood and Bill Simon but as Bob will be in Spain for most of April, Bill will continue alone. We have the use of a training room free of charge so our sessions continue to be free. Just occasionally we cannot have the ASDA room and when this happens we have an alternative at a total cost of £12 per session. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. Because of the size of the ASDA room, we are now really at full capacity but could start a waiting list for anyone who has a good level of understanding of the language Contact: Bob Thorogood 01933 650 551 bob@rltservices.co.uk

Walking Group - The walking group meets on the 1st Wednesday every month at different locations for a walk lasting 2 to 2½ hours starting at 10:00am. These walks are usually between 4 and 6 miles and taken at a relatively leisurely pace. The group generally end the walk with lunch at a local village pub. New members are very welcome; just call or email me using the contact details below. For our April walk we planned a circular walk starting from the Old White Hart in Lyddington. From here sixteen of us set out over the hill towards Stoke Dry and down to the Eyebrook Reservoir and then onwards over the fields past the site of the of the medieval village of Snelston and back to Lyddington, a total of about 5 miles. The weather was kind and the views over the valleys and reservoir together with plenty of birdsong made for an enjoyable walk followed by an excellent lunch. Our May walk will be on Wednesday 3rd May and start from the Red Lion at East Haddon (NN6 8BU). Meet at 10.00am for a 10.15am start from the pub . The walk will take in East Haddon and the Holdenby Estate and is approximately 5.5 miles over surfaced and unsurfaced footpaths with some stiles. This walk will be led by Neil Burton 01536 516966 neb2804@hotmail.co.uk and Helen Neale 07763 980840 with whom you should register your details if you are joining this walk. The usual email confirming arrangements will be sent to members of the walking group a week before the walk. If you are not on my list and you would like to join us please drop me an email or give me a call a few days before the walk.

Writers Group— How do you write about people? Our meeting opened with a lively discussion, with perceptive input both on writing and on people. ‘The proper study of mankind is man’. After the discussion, we got down to sharing our work. We started with a contemporary take on the Icarus legend, strong on emotion and a sound basis for expansion into a larger work. This was followed by a beautifully observed short study of the characters met on a bus route; a miniature ‘Canterbury Tales’. Finally we shared an intriguing study of two unusual characters, a pair of talented siblings growing up with Aspergers. Between them, these stories offered a spectrum of styles of writing with people as their subject. Finally, a short mention of Maya Angelou’s life and work rounded off a productive afternoon. Do you keep a journal? Are you writing stories for your grandchildren? If you would like to join our Writers Group, just use the contact details below. Alternatively we will be at the next third Tuesday monthly meeting at the Eden Centre (16 May) - look out for our marker. If you prefer you can just come along and join us for a taster. We meet next month as usual on the first Tuesday (2 May), at the same place (Kettering Library) and at the same time (from 1:45 to start at pm, until about 4pm). If you can’t find us just ask at the reception desk - we’ll let them know where we are.
