Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we now pay £1.50 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

Country Matters — In April we visited Broughton, starting from the Red Lion walking down Church Street stopping to look at various sites/buildings of historical interest. On reaching the church we found it was open so included a tour of this as well, (apologies to Looking at Churches group), Derek showed us the Norman archway over the south facing door. Next we walked to the pocket park also known as Parson’s Spinney spotting several wood anemones and a few bluebells amongst the shrubbery. Afterwards, Derek gave an explanation of how to date an old hedgerow and several of us had a go trying to count the different woody species over a 30 metre stretch of hedgerow. Some were near and others way out – Derek reckoned it to be at least 600 years old!! On the way back to the pub we looked at several more historical buildings including the blacksmith’s which have been in the village for over 200 years and one of its claims to fame is that it recently built some of the gates to Kensington Palace. We all enjoyed lunch in the Red Lion. Next meeting will have taken place on 11 May usual time, at Stoke Albany starting from The White Horse pub LE16 8PY, for a walk around the village and a drive to Dingley Woods to look at the bluebells.

Busy Needles and Banter — “Charlie’s ladies (plus one)” continue as productive as ever: teddies for Africa, cardigans ditto and for KGH preemies, some courtesy of my sister who came to stay for a few days after Easter; twiddle muffs from Marian who is also working on two other crochet commissions, namely little creatures for Halloween and a nativity set – there’s nothing getting well ahead. Meanwhile Martin is “squaring up” for a blanket. Look on line to see some of these items in glorious colour. Contact:

Card Making — Well the theme was male cards using black and white papers. Amongst the papers used were some zentangle print outs. Once again these enthusiastic ladies cut out shapes, backed and mounted them. Some of these cards were used as Birthday cards, some used as Thank you cards and one or two were used as Thinking of you cards. I am still amazed each month how the same papers can produce such different cards. If you would like to join this friendly group, whose qualifications are "willing to try mixed with a smile"

Canals & Waterways— We had a lovely trip to Liverpool. It didn't rain but was a bit cool at times. We visited The Williamson tunnels, which were very interesting mainly because he was an eccentric who used his wealth to employ people to build the tunnels which appear not to have a destination. On May 18th we meet at 1.45 for our trip on the Rutland Belle. If you are interested in joining us please let me know at the next U3A meeting. For those of you who are not going to Bucklers Hard a day out at Stoke Bruerne has been arranged for June, details available at the next U3A meeting. 13th. at the Church Hall at 2pm. I will not be able to attend. I have not chosen a subject but I hope we will have some subjects agreed upon at the May meeting. If you have any suggestions but cannot attend the May meeting please let me know. Contact: Richard Ling

History - The Group met on Bank Holiday Monday at the Counties Community Centre in Kettering and about 30 people came along despite it being the bank holiday. We listened to a very interesting talk about the Sinking of the HMS Eurydice. This was a naval training sailing vessel for young sailors that sank during a sudden squall on the 28th March 1878 off Shanklin, Isle of Wight. With a full crew on board, only two sailors survived. Other ships in the area were unable to get to the sinking ship due to the suddenness and ferocity of the squall. It was the worst naval disaster for the Royal Navy in peace time. The talk also included background information on a sculptor called Frederick Moynihan who created the disaster memorial that can be found in Shanklin Cemetery and who was related to our speaker The talk included information on the court of enquiry that was held after the disaster and details of ghostly sightings of the ship since the sinking. There will not be a meeting in June. The July Meeting will be a talk and presentation on the history of Kelmarsh Hall and its inhabitants. If you would like to come along please do so, there is no need to book.

Looking at Churches — On Wednesday 26th April nineteen of us visited the church of St. Mary The Virgin Maidwell Northamptonshire and were given a talk by the church warden. The village of Maidwell was mentioned in the Domesday book and the church is built on a bog, is spring fed and sits on 60 wooden piles. Originally the village had two churches and two manor houses. St.Peter’s church burnt down. The south door and tower of St. Mary the Virgin are Norman. The church has six bells, the earliest four date from 1482 and the last installed in 1891 when a significant amount of restoration took place. It was nice to hear that the church has a new young team of bellringers. There had been a painting in the church which was said to be by Rubens but it disappeared at the time of the renovation. The organ is only played at weddings due to its poor condition. All the stained glass windows are by Charles Kemp, they cost £50.00 each and were installed between 19021906. Chichester Cathedral also has some of his work. In 1996 heating and lighting were installed and the tower roof was renovated; 2011 the church was reroofed at a cost of £42,000 and in 2013 a toilet and a servery were installed, the only church in the benefice to have these facilities. Two services are held each month and the vicar is also Chaplain to Maidwell Hall an independent day- and boarding-school next door.

Knit and Natter - Another friendly, chatty morning with us putting the world to rights and some knitting being done at the same time, we all look forward to these mornings. Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523 867 annette.chidwick@tiscali.co.uk

Lunch Club - The Group enjoyed a very tasty lunch at the Sondes Arms in Rockingham village and can recommend the food and service to other U3A members. Jean and John Lewis have arranged the May lunch which will be held at everyone’s favourite pub – the Red Lion in Broughton. Places and menus can be booked at the May meeting, or if you are unable to attend, please contact Sue Hart who will pass your details and menu choice to Jean. New U3A members are always welcome to join. It is an excellent way to get to meet new people and make friends and have an enjoyable meal at the same time.

Our next two visits are as follows:Wednesday 17th May – The Church of St.Peter & St.Paul Harrington NN6 9NX followed by refreshments in the village hall - £4.00 per person. Wednesday 21st June – St.Andrew’s Church Main Street Foxton Leicestershire LE16 7RD - £2.00 per person followed by refreshments at Totty Teas tearoom in nearby Lubenham, 56 Main Street LE16 9TF. I will email all members of the group on my contact list the week before a visit to ascertain numbers together with any additional or a change of information.

Photography Group — Because of the May Bank Holiday the Photography Group planned to meet later than usual. The hope is that we will have found some bluebells to photograph, but they may have gone past their best by the time we get to them. Perhaps we will find alternative subjects for the "macro" treatment in the woods. Ideally any bluebells will be the proper British variety (curved stems, fragrance) rather than the invasive cultivated Spanish form (straight stems, no fragrance).

Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Normally the teaching is a joint enterprise between Bob Thorogood and Bill Simon but as Bob will be in Spain for most of April, Bill will continue alone. We now meet at the Hertford Road Community centre since ASDA decided we cannot use their facilities any more. The room costs £10 per session so less than £1 each We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. We are now really at full capacity but could start a waiting list for anyone who has a good level of understanding of the language Contact: Bob Thorogood 01933 650 551 bob@rltservices.co.uk Sugar Craft— If anyone who would like to learn, but feels they are hopeless, come to watch as we work and I guarantee that they will soon realise that they can achieve good results.

Ise Valley U3A would like to request your company in the following activity groups. Ballroom Dancing Group We meet at the Mash Dance Studios on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month 12:45-1:30. At our last session we had a good time and now feel confident to dance the Sweetheart waltz. We hope to learn another new dance next time. There are still places in this group, so please come and join us. Ring Matilda 01536 522 915 Making Music Group We enjoy making music - mainly guitars but other instruments very welcome - some old songs, some Country and Western, some folk, some (not much) modern. We meet every Friday 2pm-4pm, at the leader’s home in Rushden. Walking Group - The walking group meets on the 1st

Wining and Dining Some of us are away with Canals and waterways in June there or I am changing the date to the 21st. If you are interested in joining us on that date please let me know by May U3A meeting and I will organise a venue

Wednesday every month at different locations for a walk lasting 2 to 2½ hours starting at 10:00am. These walks are usually between 4 and 6 miles and taken at a relatively leisurely pace. The group generally end the walk with lunch at a local village pub. New members are very welcome; just call or email me using the contact details below. Our May walk started from the Red Lion Hotel in East Haddon with 21 of us setting out in a stiff breeze with a short walk along the main road before taking refuge along the field walks. Along the way we encountered sheep and lambs, a herd of very curious young bullocks and two very energetic young colts who thought it was a good game to gallop through and around us. We held our nerve, however, and exited their field unscathed. The views from the top of the "slight inclines" were excellent, including the Northampton Lighthouse in the distance. Half a dozen stiles produced our usual moans and groans but we managed to keep our balance, just. During the banana break a handful of us took a slight detour to the lovely little church at Holdenby. The church is now decommissioned but beautifully cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. We noted the gate in the wall nearby where the staff from the "big house" were probably frog-marched to church on Sundays, attendance in those days most likely being compulsory. All in all a good walk, although one of the "slight inclines" was slightly more challenging than remembered from the recce! We returned to the Red Lion with all cobwebs blown firmly away to enjoy our lunch and a reviving drink. Our next walk will be on Wednesday 7th June and will be announced by email the week before to all members of the group on my contact list as the starting location has not been fixed as yet. The usual email confirming arrangements will be sent to members of the walking group a week before the walk. If you are not on my list and you would like to join us please drop me an email or give me a call a few days before the walk.

Writers Group— Some group members came along with writing to share. Some group members came along to gain inspiration. Both groups came away with their aims fulfilled. We shared a story of pathos and special needs and a story of magical birthdays. Guess who's danced with Tony Blackburn! We shared a story of the launch of a great ship and a story of romance (deliciously tonguein-cheek). To round it all off, we shared the (verbal) story of a youngster's apprenticeship to the upmarket end of the rag trade. Guess who has been couturier to Royalty! In short, we had shedloads of sharing and an afternoon of sheer enjoyment. Our stories are written both from imagination and from recollection. From recollection, we all have wonderful memories to share, especially with future generations: children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren. If you want to come along and share your stories, or just gain inspiration from the others, you will be welcome. Our next meeting is, as usual, on the first Tuesday (6 June) at the usual time (from 2-4) at the usual place (Kettering Library).
