From the Chairman— On a rather wintry June day I am looking back at last year’s report and realising that this year’s, with but a little tweaking, could be a carbon copy. As at the AGM, 2016, we celebrate another year for KU3A, we offer thanks to all who have contributed to its success and hold in our thoughts those who are no longer with us for whatever reason. Again, throughout this our second year in this venue, we’ve attracted a lot of new members and welcomed members from other U3As. Collaboration between ourselves and Ise continues to work to our mutual advantage. While most Interest Groups continue to thrive, there’s plenty of room for additional craft groups, for singers, dancers, writers, board-game enthusiasts: To all Leaders thank you for all that you do; thank you to your deputies and those prepared to take on those roles vital to the continuance of groups. Thank you all the volunteers who help with teas, raffles and dive in when and where they are needed. As ever they all know who they are. Thank you to all the committee for their support, teamwork and the thousand and one things they do behind the scenes, which wouldn’t get done otherwise. Particular thanks to those standing down and to those changing roles within the committee, and indeed to those prepared to join it, thus ensuring the future of this great U3A. News — Interest Groups — Visits and Reports Bookworms — "Belgravia", the latest offering from Julian Fellowes, and set in the 1800's, follows the story of Sophia, the daughter of James and Anne Trenchard, her lover Charles, and members of the aristocracy, Lord and Lady Brockenhurst. It was liked by some of us, and loathed by others. ( Some thought Julian Fellows is hoping for another "Downton Abbey"). We meet next on the 4th Wednesday of the month ( 28th June).

Card Making — I am still amazed each month how the same papers can produce such different cards. If you would like to join this friendly group, whose qualifications are "willing to try mixed with a smile" Contact: Marian Tucker 01536 510 354 mariantucker1954@gmail.com

Creative Cards — The group had a very good card making session making cards for the men in our lives. One of them included using wild life pictures and producing what they term as a kinetic card – we don’t know what they mean either but it was very intricate and included a lot of concentration. The finished results were great and have pleased the recipients of them so far. We will be going for the day to Eileen’s niece Ann for a days’ crafting. Ann is an imaginative crafter and we always enjoy our day with her as well as having a very enjoyable time with lots of laughter.

Bridge - We have a very friendly Bridge group who meet every Friday afternoon. If you can play Bridge but perhaps have not done so for a little while then please come and join us. I must say, however, that we do not teach it and therefore you must have some knowledge of the game to be able to join. You would be made very welcome. We start each Friday at 1.30pm at the Bridge Club in Field Street and we now pay £1.50 each week and for that you get good company, a very interesting game and refreshments.

Busy Needles and Banter — Nothing is more delightful and encouraging than the knowledge of how appreciated our work is and of the good to which we are able to contribute.

Country Matters — There were 17 of us starting from The Montague Arms in Barnwell on a cloudy, but dry morning. We walked to the field to the east of the castle and were able to see the Barbican entrance. After a walk around the village looking at the outside of both churches and the old hospital we went to decided we had time toto walk back to get another glimpse of the castle. We enjoyed our lunch afterwards! July’s meeting will start at 10.15 for 10.30 start from The King’s Arms in Polebrook PE8 5LW on Thursday, 13th July. Look forward to seeing you all there. Contact:

Back in May Di and Mary went to a Life for African Mothers presentation in Nottingham. A most moving and uplifting insight into the work of this wonderful organisation and a joy to meet some we have previously only known through Facebook. A box of small knitted garments and cuddly knitted toys went with us to be handed over personally. Wood Green Animal Centre greatly appreciated Martin’s dog coat, while KGH were greatly delighted with preemie garments and twiddle muffs from the fair hands of our Knit and Natter sisters and our own Marian. Huge thanks, too, to other donors of items including wool, patterns, fabrics etc. Contact:

Canals & Waterways— I can't believe how lucky we were weather wise when we had our day out at Rutland water and a ride on the Rutland Belle. It had poured with rain on the Wednesday; so much so I thought I might have to cancel. It was warm and sunny and we were able to eat outside at the Waterfront cafe. A good time was had by all.

Computer Group — WE ARE MOVING AGAIN Last meeting was in a room upstairs in the museum, but it was not suitable so the next meeting will be in the Community Area of the museum, just past the reception desk to see if that is better. If anyone can come up with a better meeting place, please let me know.

Discussion Group — As we can have the Church Hall in July and the fee for the cancelled June meeting can transfered to pay for the meeting we will be meeting Tuesday July 12th at the usual 2pm. The subjects will be 'What would you like to have done if you could repeat your working life?' and 'Chat shows on TV. Are they just ego trips for so called celebrities or chances to promote their latest film or TV show?

We have two outings for June. There is a day out at Stoke Bruerne Canal NN12 7SE. Please meet at the museum cafe 10.30 -11.0am. Some of us are going away for a few days to Bucklers Hard, so I will not be at the U3A AGM. July 20th we are going to Cambridge for the day. If you are interested in joining us please let me know . English Studies — I am amazed to realise this group has been going for over a year now and by how many writers whose works have engaged us. At the time of writing we have welcomed Michele into our midst. Bravo to her for plunging in at the deep end of some quite complex writing by Robert Browning. His poem Fra Lippo Lippi leads, among other things, to a wider discussion of Art. Sounds awfully highbrow? Not at all. Eng Lit is stimulating to the brain, relevant and fun. From Browning we shall be looking at other types of monologue, then at poetry of WWI via the, these days, little known Wilfred Gibson. Please note we have changed our regular meeting times to fortnightly. Next session will be July 3rd from 2 – 4pm.

History - The next meeting will be held on the 3 July 2017 at the Counties Community Centre starting at 2pm. The speaker, Betty West, will be telling us all about Kelmarsh Hall – its history and its owners. As many of us will probably have visited the Hall and gardens, it will be interesting to find out more about them both regarding how the estate developed over the years. We are currently putting the programme together for 2018 so if any member of the group or other U3A members have any details regarding History speakers would you please let Maggi have the details. If there are any members who would like to join the group please come along to the meeting. You do not have to come to every talk nor do you have to book a place. You will be very welcome.

Looking at Churches — On a very wet Wednesday 17th May twenty five of us visited the church of St.Peter & St.Paul Harrington and were given a very interesting talk about the church and village by Betty West. The church is a Grade II listed building from the early 14th century to mid15th century and is built of ironstone and limestone, although there are signs of a Saxon church on the site. The rood screen is from the middle ages and there is an octagonal font. There are memorials to the Saunders family including an alabaster wall monument of a kneeling family by a Flemish sculptor. There are no stained glass windows but they are being upgraded with the proceeds of concerts held in the church. There are six bells but they are not rung as the floor of the ringing chamber is unsafe. This will be rectified when a toilet and kitchen are installed and the Victorian pews are to be replaced. The history of Harrington is shown in a number of embroidered wall hangings within the church. February is a good time to see snowdrops in the churchyard and October to see the pink cyclamen. The village of Harrington had two coaching inns, the Tollemache Arms still remains, the manor house was demolished in 1945 and the village school built in 1825 closed in 1938 and is now the village hall. Every Friday from 10 am to 12 noon a coffee morning is held in the village hall. My thanks again to our group member Cathie Marshall who organised the talk and tea in the village hall for me.

Knit and Natter - As we had 3 birthdays in June we started the morning off with a slice of birthday cake with our coffee. Two of us decided to have crochet lessons which Michelle very patiently tried to teach us. She had more success with Rita but it was more difficult with me as I am left handed but we got there in the end—a long way to go to be as good as her. Lunch Club - Once again the Group enjoyed a tasty lunch at the Red Lion at Brought on, always a popular venue. Maggi McGuire and Sue Hart have arranged the June lunch which will be held at - The Lamb, Little Harrowden—another one of our favourite venues. Places and Menus can be booked at the June meeting . New U3A members are always welcome to join us. It is an excellent way to get to meet new people and make friends and have an enjoyable meal at the same time. Our next visit is on Wednesday 21st June to St. Andrew’s Church Main Street Foxton Leicestershire LE16 7RD - £2.00 per person followed by refreshments at Totty Teas tearoom in nearby Lubenham, 56 Main Street LE16 9TF. I will email all members of the group on my contact list the week before a visit to ascertain numbers together with any additional or a change of information.

Photography Group — The Photography Group met at the start of June to enjoy some close-up flower photography. Once again the British weather beat us, and the wind and rain persuaded us to move indoors instead of the planned sortie looking for wild flowers. We experimented with two set-ups, one using natural window light and one using a daylight-corrected lamp as our source of illumination. The benefit of the controlled conditions was the ability to experiment, and enabled members to get used to (or remind themselves) how to use manual exposure, manual focus, read histograms, use exposure adjustment and the many other techniques that enable a photographer to take charge of the camera rather than vice versa. The next meeting will be on Monday 3rd July at 2.00pm, and this time we hope the weather will be kind enough to allow us to take our flower close-up techniques out of doors.

Stitchin' Time— Twiddle Muffs galore, knitted baby jackets, knitted dolls, knitting needles clicking. We celebrated a milestone birthday of one of our stitchers with a delicious chocolate cake. We are all learning new skills and enjoying the company of like minded crafters. We meet next on the 1st Wednesday of the month (5th July). Contact:

Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Normally the teaching is a joint enterprise between Bob Thorogood and Bill Simon but as Bob will be in away for most of June, Bill will continue alone. We now meet at the Hertford Road Community centre since ASDA decided we cannot use their facilities any more. The room costs £10 per session so less than £1 each We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. We are now really at full capacity but could start a waiting list for anyone who has a good level of understanding of the language.

Walking Group - The walking group meets on the 1st Wednesday every month at different locations for a walk lasting 2 to 2½ hours starting at 10:00am. These walks are usually between 4 and 6 miles and taken at a relatively leisurely pace. The group generally end the walk with lunch at a local village pub. New members are very welcome; just call or email me using the contact details below. Our June walk started from the Kings Head at Wadenhoe with just 11 of us setting out on a pleasant day given the near monsoon and high winds the day before. Our walk took us over the River Nene and over fields to the church at the village of Achurch and then through woodland in the direction of Pilton, back over twin bridges and back towards our start point with some of us stopping to visit the church at Wadenhoe. Despite the heavy rain over the previous week the ground conditions were generally good for walking. Our next walk will be on Wednesday 5th July and will be announced by email the week before to all members of the group on my contact list as the starting location has not been fixed as yet. The usual email confirming arrangements will be sent to members of the walking group a week before the walk. If you are not on my list and you would like to join us please drop me an email or give me a call a few days before the walk. New members are welcome so for more details please contact the group co-ordinator.

Wining and Dining Le Cafe Weldon organised a three course meal with a French twist for us in May. The service was very good and the food was delicious. We are going to The Waterfront, Union Wharf Market Harborough on 21st June, later than usual as I am away with Canals & Waterways. Contact: Christine Strachan 01536 515 730 cestrachan1@gmail.com

Writers Group— Must a tale have a sting in the tail? ‘An Unlikely Pet’ was the chosen subject of one of our members and Eric’s identity was revealed only in the last paragraph. Another offering built up to a splendidly original pun in the last sentence. We may not always write great literature but we sure as hell have fun! A family history story, ‘A Random Act of Kindness’, may have lacked a sting in the tail but it led to an informative discussion of various publication options. We looked at various channels from professional publications to informal stories for grandchildren and both traditional print and current electronic formats including blogs and ebooks. All in all, a very satisfying afternoon.

Our stories are written both from imagination and from recollection. From imagination, well, we all have our dreams. You will be welcome to come along and share them, or just gain inspiration from the others. Our next meeting is, as usual, on the first Tuesday (4 July) at the usual time (from 2-4) at the usual place (Kettering Library).

Water Colour Painting Classes - We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from September to April. Our venue is at The Parish Hall, Market Place, Kettering, from 1.15pm - 3.15pm. SEPTEMBER 14TH, 28TH OCTOBER 12TH, 26TH NOVEMBER 9TH, 23RD DECEMBER 14TH (Last Class) (New classes for the Winter Term start again on 11th January 2018. If you are interested in joining us please get in touch

Some possible ideas for subjects to whet your appetite are: - They came back every year to lay flowers at the spot. - She/he/they studied her/his/their face(s) in the mirror. If these offer you inspiration do put them on paper. If not, let your creative imagination run free! Either way, we’d love you to bring them along and share them.
