20th June 2017 Kettering U3A Year 14 Newsletter 1 Today
Women of the Russian Revolution by David Price
From the Chairman— Welcome to the start of another new year and, following last month’s AGM, to the new Committee. For some it has been more of a “Cabinet reshuffle” with officers finding their feet in their new responsibilities. Welcome, too, to all new U3A members and to those existing members who have renewed their subs. Remember, if you haven’t renewed by the end of this month you are not, for insurance reasons, eligible to attend Interest Groups. For new members in particular, if you have an idea for an Interest Group, please tell us about it; speak to our Groups Coordinator, Sue Perkins, or if you would like to take a more active role, such as a Greeter or assistant to Shirley on the Raffle, don’t be shy. Let us know.

News — Interest Groups — Visits and Reports Bookworms — We are reading "All the LIght we cannot see" by Anthony Doerr, set in wartime France. It tells the story of Marie-Laure, blind since the age of 6 years, whose father constructs a miniature of their neighbourhood in Paris in order that she can find her way home. The story then relocates to St Malo, where Maria-Laure and her father live with her uncle Etienne. Werner, an orphan, brought up in an orphanage in a coal mining town in Germany is conscripted into the Hitler Youth. He is a brilliant expert with radios, and is soon sent to track down the broadcasts made from France by the Resistance. It is a lovely and well written book which won the Pullitzer Prize for Fiction in 2015. Next meeting - 4th Wednesday in July, when we are meeting for a Cream Tea.

Card Making — Well ladies and gentlemen I had many requests to join the card making group last year. I had a few ladies join me but for numerous reasons the numbers have dwindled to 2. Also somewhere in the last few months I have lost my mojo for card making. So this group will not be meeting for a few months. Meanwhile I will be going on card making courses and sorting out my craft room, cards, papers and dies. Let's hope this group restarts in the Autumn

Bridge I have sent a letter of resignation for the Bridge club as we do not fulfil the requirements of the U3A. That is that we do not teach Bridge, we only play, and that is not what the U3A is about. We shall still be playing, however, and if anyone would like to join us they must be able to play.
Creative Cards — A small group from the Creative Card group spent a lovely day crafting with Eileen’s niece, Ann North, at her home near Northampton. Unfortunately not all members of the group were able to go due to prior commitments but we all hope to go for a further visit later in the year. This time we made an Autumn card showing a sleeping Hedgehog against a background of autumnal leaves. We were all very pleased with the results and thoroughly enjoyed making the card. Our second card included an ornate square design that had been die cut. Ann provided us with a lovely lunch so all in all we had a very enjoyable time with her.

Canals & Waterways— We had a wonderful trip to the south coast. On Tuesday we went as foot passengers from Lymington to the Isle of Wight , where we enjoyed an open top bus tour to the Needles and back to Yarmouth. A couple in our group also did a bus tour of the south of the island, whilst the rest of us enjoyed fish and chips back in Lymington.
Busy Needles and Banter — Encouraged by the mid -June heat wave (remember that??) we were hoping to take our ease along the river in a kind of “Wool in the Willows” sort of excursion, but alas came wind and rain to scupper not us, happily, but the plans. Nothing daunted we shall try our luck later in the year and meanwhile go out to lunch under cover. For what we’ve been making by request and thanks to donations see the accompanying photos. Contact:

On the Tuesday and Wednesday we visited Beaulieu and Bucklers Hard. Also enjoying glimpses of the new forest and the ponies. It is a beautiful part of the country.
On July 20th we are going to Cambridge for the day and hopefully having a boat trip which will offer a different view of Cambridge. I am also trying to arrange an open water boat trip in Dudley on August 20th. If you are interested in joining us please let me know . Don't forget to book your hotel if you are coming to Chatham in September. Contact: Christine Strachan 01536 515730 cestrachan1@gmail.com

History - There is one thing that a Group Leader dreads and that is when technology does not cooperate with you and fails to do what it is supposed to do. Today, at the History Group meeting that is precisely what happened. The laptop refused to recognise the memory stick containing the presentation. Fortunately for us our Speaker, Betty West, was totally unfazed by this occurrence and gave us a really interesting talk about Kelmarsh Hall and the families that have lived there over the centuries. They were certainly a varied group of people, some of them marrying heiresses in order to use their fortunes; changing the layout of the house to suit their requirements; demolishing a farmhouse so that their view across the park to the church could be improved. How the other half lived in those days. Nancy Lancaster was one of the most well known of the residents and she is responsible for the decor of the house and also the layout of the garden that we see today. Kelmarsh Hall is now looked after by a Trust who are responsible for generating income for the upkeep of the house. This includes weddings, funerals and commercial ventures – a Food Fair will be held there shortly. Betty, our speaker, is a guide at the house and is very involved with the work of the Trust. There are a number of events being held there over the next few months, so the members of the group who have not visited the house so far will do so in the very near future. The talk was very enjoyable with lots of anecdotes about the families and their going-ons whilst in residence. We look forward to Betty returning in the new year to tell us about a lady called Nancy Wake who was parachuted into France, became a member of the Resistance and was hunted by the Gestapo.

Looking at Churches — On Wednesday 21st June nineteen of us visited St. Andrew’s Church in Foxton where we enjoyed an interesting talk followed by tea, coffee and cakes. Foxton Church is built of ironstone and is an example of a medieval church with a Victorian interior layout. The only remains of the church’s Saxon origins is a cross inside the church. It was mentioned in the Domesday book in 1086 and has a decorative Norman font. The chancel dates from 12001250 and the nave 1350-1380. In 1397 the church was extended and in the 16th century the rood screen was destroyed. In the late 19th century there was a large chest of weapons in the church but the rector at the time decided they were too dangerous and sold them to a local dealer. The parish registers date from 1653 and in 1890 the church was in such a poor state the congregation sat under umbrellas! In 1906 an additional bell was installed making six in total. To celebrate the millennium a new stained glass window was installed which depicts the village of Foxton. The village of Foxton originally had three manor houses and John of Gaunt hunted on Foxton Moor and you can still see gorse growing there today. There were nine orchards, and the original school was built in 1875. There was a Baptist chapel and records show that there were 57 children at the Sunday school in 1869. The chapel closed in 1980 and is now a house. The village’s benefactor Robert Monk who was born in the village left £21,457,00 in trust and money from that will is still used today.
Knit and Natter - At our last knit & Natter morning it was nice to be able to welcome Mary Earl's daughter, Jo, who came for the morning and enjoyed herself joining in with all the topics of conversation. Our next meeting will be Monday July 10th due to the Heartbeat walk. Although people have enquired about joining our group I'm afraid we are full at the moment. Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523 867 annette.chidwick@tiscali.co.uk Lunch Club Members of the Lunch Club had a very enjoyable meal at The Lamb, Little Harrowden on the 27 June. The Lamb is one of our favourites and we always have a very good meal there. Their Liver and Bacon main course is a particular favourite of a number of the group and the pudding, the Berry Sundae was also very popular. Elizabeth and Kathleen will be hosting the July lunch and are in the process of booking the venue. Full details will be available at the July meeting if you would like to come along and have a convivial meal and make new friends. Photography Group — At last the weather gods were kind, and the Photography Group managed to spend a warm dry afternoon in Prologis Park to carry out closeup flower photography, employing some of the skills learned in last month's session (we hope...). Only a light breeze was an additional bonus, as macro work involves using small apertures, and that leads to slow shutter speeds. So any movement of the flower in the wind adds to the problems of lack of sharpness in the final image. The next meeting is due for Monday 14th August as the 7th is a Bank Holiday. Further details to be decided - keep looking at the e-mails, group members.

Stitchin' Time— We thoroughly enjoy our afternoons, getting together to create our "masterpieces". Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm The teaching is a joint enterprise between Bob Thorogood and Bill Simon. We now meet at the Hertford Road Community centre since ASDA decided we cannot use their facilities any more. The room costs £10 per session so less than £1 each We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. We are now really at full capacity but could start a waiting list for anyone who has a good level of understanding of the language. Contact: Bob Thorogood 01933 650 551 bob@rltservices.co.uk Sing (and laugh) Out Loud — It being not far off two years since the inception of this Group, we have come a very long way and have now, with two dozen members, elevated ourselves into a choir as we hope we demonstrated at the AGM. Choir members had worked very hard so the applause and very positive reception were much appreciated. We continue to broaden our repertoire in all directions alongside giving thought to a Programme for Christmas. By the time you are reading this we shall perforce have “broken up” for summer - apart from a session in August: Marian Garrod has kindly offered to squeeze us into her home round her piano. Possibly, should the day be clement, we may spill out into the garden to entertain her neighbours?? – and recommence on Friday September 8. The choir meets on alternate Fridays from 10am to 11.45 at Fuller Church and is open to members from both Kettering and Ise Valley U3As; indeed to any paid-up U3A member, of whatever gender.

Walking Group - The walking group meets on the 1st Wednesday every month at different locations for a walk lasting 2 to 2½ hours starting at 10:00am. These walks are usually between 4 and 6 miles and taken at a relatively leisurely pace. The group generally end the walk with lunch at a local village pub. New members are very welcome; just call or email me using the contact details below. Our July walk started from the Cross Keys pub at Kings Cliffe as planned. The originally planned walk around Blatherwicke was changed to a walk to Apethorpe so as to avoid the drive to and from Blatherwick as there is a shortage of places to have lunch in this area as a number of village pubs no longer exist. In future I will ensure everyone is aware of any change in advance as I realise a few members would have preferred to keep to the original plan. Our walk took us out of the village on a mixture of footpaths, fields and little used country, lanes towards Apethorpe. The day was hot and instead of the usual single stop we took several short water stops to refresh ourselves. The return part had us going over several stiles and some pleasant views of the village. We had expected to see some deer on this walk but unfortunately none were seen although they were heard in the distance. We returned to the pub for a pleasant lunch. Our next walk will be on Wednesday 2nd August and will be announced by email the week before to all members of the group on my contact list as the starting location has not been fixed as yet. The usual email confirming arrangements will be sent to members of the walking group a week before the walk. If you are not on my list and you would like to join us please drop me an email or give me a call a few days before the walk. New members are welcome so for more details please contact the group co-ordinator.
Wining and Dining - Because of the beautiful weather we have been having the Waterfront at Market Harborough was extremely busy therefore the service was a little slow. Nevertheless we had an enjoyable evening. I shall not be organising a meal for August as I have two of my grandchildren staying. Ideas please for September Contact: Christine Strachan 01536 515 730 cestrachan1@gmail.com Writers Group— A smaller number of us than usual (are the holidays here already?) met in Kettering Library, but lack of quantity did not mean lack of quality. As always we delighted to share writing that ranged from a work in progress on the subject of bereavement to memories of childhood guilt. Dark? Surprisingly, not entirely so but also much humour, pathos and compassion. We’ll meet as usual on the first Tuesday (1 August), at the usual time (from 2-4) and at the usual place (Kettering Library). If you would like a subject, we can offer ‘Left on the bus’ - other transport systems are available. Plenty of opportunities there! How did they get home without their crutches? Who leaves a wedding dress on a bus? You get the idea. If that doesn’t fire you up you are welcome to come along with your own subject to share. If you consider yourself a novice writer and just want to test the water come along anyway and enjoy sharing the others’ efforts. We try to make it friendly and fun.
