21st November 2017 Kettering U3A Year 14 Newsletter 5
Today GILBERT & SULIVAN by Bernard Lockett From the Chairman— First a huge thank you to the 30+ Leaders and New Members who attended our recent gettogether. There was a lovely atmosphere and, of course, lots of cake laid before us by Di, Chris, Sue and sundry other helping hands. A most enjoyable and encouraging afternoon. Re last month’s meeting, our Speaker was delighted to find £136 in his collection tin and wrote to thank you all for your generosity. Following my plea last month for helpers “front of house”, we have had some response including new member Mike Fuller. Mike has also joined our Sing (and Laugh) Out Loud Choir and is looking for a keyboard of the musical variety. If you know of one wanting a home, please tell us. We still, though, could do with more volunteers to assist Marian Garrod at check-in and Shirley on the raffle table. Donations for the raffle are always most welcome, too. Several Committee members recently attended a Network session on publicising the U3A among the public at large and the bored and lonely in particular. Not enough people who would benefit know anything about us. You can help by spreading the word, but the Committee also feels the need for a Publicity Officer. If you, or a group of you, are interested, please let the Committee know.

Bookworms — Due to holidays and illness, we decided to cancel the October meeting. In November, we will be watching the DVD of "The 100 year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared". Although this was not a Bookworms reading, we have all read and giggled our way through the book, and it will be interesting to see how it transfers to screen. As the date for the December meeting falls during the Christmas season, we do not meet in December. We are all hoping for books and book vouchers for presents to keep us occupied in 2018. Our book for discussion in January will be "The Rose of Sebastopol", set in Victorian London and the Crimea. We are a small friendly group, and would like a couple more members to join us. We take it in turns to choose a book, and meet at the end of the month to discuss our thoughts on its content.
Card Making — Well I made it to the new members meeting but couldn't stay due to being on school run. Hope some of you will join this Group? Well due to prior arrangements Margaret and I made some wonderful cards for general use. Hopefully next month my Christmas cards will bring back my absent crafters. Please give me a call or email me.

Creative Cards — The group carried on making their Christmas cards at the November group meeting. It is amazing what you can do with strips of patterned or glittery paper when it comes to making cards and also using gems. It can be a bit fiddly using both but the cards that were made were very simple but also very effective. We all agreed that simple cards often look better than the really fussy ones. Our last Christmas card make will be at the December meeting.

Busy Needles and Banter — As many of you will know, members of this group and other supporters donate knitted garments and small soft toys to be sent to Life for African Mothers. Along with Choir members, we have been especially moved by the plight of families who have lost everything in the mud slides of Sierra Leone. This Halloween we held a cake-and-sandwiches fund-raising day, hosted by Di. To all who attended, helped and/ or donated, and to Di especially, many, many thanks for raising the sum of £235. Well done indeed. Meanwhile Marian continues to make Christmas rosettes for the choir; 6 other pairs of needles never stop either, and other donations are greatly appreciated, too. Contact:

English Studies — Curtain up on King Lear.
Family History— I was on holiday so Katrina, Moira, Pete, Steve and Sue, all from the LDS church ran the meeting for me. A BIG thank you to you all. Below is Katrina’s report. Nine U3A members attended and I set up 5 tables and themed and labelled each table so people could go to whichever one was most relevant to their query. So we had Irish and Scottish, Immigration and Emigration, Beginners and post 1837, General and brickwalls and FamilySearch. Each table had a simple handout with websites relevant to it's topic so people could help themselves whilst perhaps waiting for someone to help them and also a resource to take home. I did also invite people to help each other if they didn't need, or were waiting for, help themselves. As main helpers we had Pete Dodkins on the FamilySearch table, Moira Dodkins on the Scottish and Irish table, I was on the Emigration table, Steve was with the beginners and Sue Amos who was on the brickwalls table so it all worked out perfectly. I think most people managed to find something which was great. Katrina

Heartbeat— On the 13th November, fifteen members of the group had a walk around Cranford on a crisp, but dry day. It really was ideal walking weather particularly as we had the benefit of a log fire in the Old Forge at Cranford afterwards. I can also thoroughly recommend the bacon muffin ! Our next Heartbeat walk will be on Monday Dec 11th., and we shall once again be meeting at Cranford. Start time is 10-00am.
Friday Pop-In - Why is the Friday pop-in such a roaring success? Is it the strong turnout? We had over a dozen here today. Maureen brought up us up-to-date with her studies in genetic genealogy and it was great to see Maria who appeared to have recovered well from her recent illness. Rosemary was in between travels and Yoshi graced us with his presence, spreading love and affection to all. Janice flew by with details of the Kettering Symphony Orchestra Winter Concert on Saturday 25th November in which she will be playing—details and tickets on https:// www.kettsymphorch.co.uk/concerts/upcomingconcerts/
The January meeting will be in Burton Latimer on Jan 8th. We will meet in the car park in front of the Old Vic pub for a 10-00 am start. The walk will be around the woods at the back of the Parish church, and is on hard paths throughout. Afterwards we go to Seasons Garden Centre for refreshments. The February meeting will be around Rothwell. Meet in the Market Square for a 10-00am start. We shall go through Manor Park, and circle around to return via Well Lane. Is it the lively chat? It ranged from discussion of a recent performance of the Nutcracker ballet via Malta and a forthcoming holiday trip to Africa to reminiscences of the idiosyncratic ways of past KGH consultants. The current trend towards knee-touching was touched on—sorry, dreadful pun intended! Is it the Kino barista’s choice range of refreshments? We shared croissants—breaking bread together is a delight in such company. Whatever the reason, do come along to next month’s pop-in on the first Friday of the month (1 December), same time (10:00 to about 11:30), same place (the Kino Lounge, Market Place, next door to Wildwood, formerly Mr Ray’s). Looking forward to seeing you all there—if you’ve not yet been along it’s a great way to brighten the start of the month in great company!

Looking at Churches — On the 18th October twenty one of us visited the church of St.Leonard Glapthorn where we enjoyed a talk by one of their churchwardens who is also a lay minister. Glapthorn was originally a chapel of ease and not a parish church as Cotterstock was the main church in the area. The original building was Norman but it was demolished in the 12th century leaving just two Norman arches. The chancel and north chapel are 13th century and one of the bells is 15th century. The font is perpendicular and the pulpit and communion rail are Jacobean. The church has just one 19th century stained glass window. The church has some medieval wall paintings which are not in very good condition but when they got a quotation to renovate just one of them “St. Christopher” it would cost £60,000. More recently the ringing platform was raised so that a toilet could be installed and also a servery. Glapthorn church has the highest church attendance in the diocese. Some interesting stone embellishments on the outside of the church include a sow and her piglets and a boar on either side of one of the windows as Glapthorn was originally called the “pig village”.
History - The talk this month was Witchcraft and Northamptonshire and the speaker was Kevin Varty. Kevin told us about the history of witchcraft over the years and it was amazing to learn how this took place over many centuries. King James 1 was a very superstitious man and was convinced that everything that went wrong was due to witchcraft. There were a number of very unpleasant tests that were carried out to prove a person was a witch or warlock most of which were painful or ended in the death of the individual. If they survived these tests they were proven to be witches and were then sent to trial and then hanged. You really didn’t stand much chance if you were accused of witchcraft – whatever happened you died. James directed that everyone who was guilty of being a witch had to be killed. In Northamptonshire there were fourteen individuals had been accused of witchcraft and they went through the some if not all of the testing process. At the end, five “witches” were hanged and the remainder were let go as they hadn’t been proven as witches. When the report went back to James he was livid that this had happened and he was not at all happy with the county of Northamptonshire. From then on, throughout the country, all those found to be witches were killed. No doubt James 1 was even more unhappy with Northamptonshire when he found out that most of the Gunpowder Plot instigators were Northamptonshire families.
Our November visit is on Wednesday 15th November to the church of St. Nicholas Marston Trussell (Main Street LE16 9TY) with refreshments afterwards in the village hall. The donation will be £4.00 per person. There will be no visits in December 2017 or January 2018. I will email all members of the group on my contact list a week to ten days before a visit to ascertain numbers together with any additional or a change of information.
Kevin went on to say how, although the laws changed over the years, people could still be arrested as witches. The laws included mediums and he told us that these days if a medium told you something that did not come try, you can only now sue them under the Trade Description Act. The last time they used one of the older laws was during the war when a medium said that a certain ship had sunk. The loss of life on the ship was so great the government had decided not to announce the sinking and they were so concerned that she could be giving secrets to the enemy she was arrested.

It is fortunate that people do not believe in witchcraft these days and that there are no laws concerning this. It was a convenient way of settling scores and getting rid of nightmare neighbours. The talk at the December meeting will be given by a U3A member, Anne Pegg and she will be telling us about the history of Barton Seagrave. Contact: Eileen Mason

Lunch Club - The Lunch Club returned to one of its favourite venues – the Samuel Pepys at Slipton - for lunch on Tuesday 24th October 2017 and we were delighted that so many new members came to join us. It looked as though all the gentlemen had decided to have the Steak and Ale Pie and the ladies seemed to favour the Beer Battered Haddock. The Haddock was delicious but the chips were a little too well cooked and it seemed we were rationed to eight chips each. If we return to the restaurant again, we certainly hope that they will be a little more generous with the number of chips we are given. All in all everyone seemed to enjoy the food and there was certainly a lot of conversations going on together with laughter. Many thanks to Jacky Rowson and Trish Goldsack for organising the lunch.
Christmas Lunch
This is your last chance to book your place for the Christmas Lunch that will be held on the 5th December 2017 at the Stirrup Cup in Barton Seagrave. The response has been very good but if you would like to join us you would be very welcome. As well as a traditional Christmas lunch, other choices will be available on the menu (you can only eat so many turkey dinner, can’t you?). The cost is £19.99 and this covers the cost of a four course lunch with tea or coffee. The organiser, Elizabeth York, has asked me to point out that there are six individuals who have booked their place for the lunch and have paid their deposit but they have not yet told her what they wish to have from the menu. Can they please do so as soon as possible? Please come and join us for the lunch, which we are sure you will enjoy.
There will not be a Lunch Club in November as the Christmas Lunch is so close to the date we normally meet. However we will start again in January 2018 when Elizabeth York and Kathleen Alton will be organising the meal – it will possibly be an Italian meal. I hope so because I am rather partial to Italian food. Every month a member of the group organises the meal by deciding on the location, speaking to the Restaurant Manager and then taking the bookings at the monthly meeting and finally advising the restaurant of the menu choices. A number of new members have kindly volunteered to organise a meal and we have cover for the whole year so the venues could be very different to our norm. If anyone has a particularly nice lunch at the different venue please let us know so that we can check it out for the lunch club.

Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Normally the teaching is a joint enterprise between Bob Thorogood and Bill Simon. We now meet at the Hertford Road Community centre. The room costs £10 per session so less than £1 each. We will be starting a new book – ‘Enjoy Spanish’ in October. We could accommodate up to two more students but they would need a fairly good level of understanding of the language. Walking Group - The walking group meets on the 1st Wednesday every month at different locations for a walk lasting 2 to 2½ hours starting at 10:00am. These walks are usually between 4 and 6 miles and taken at a relatively leisurely pace. The group generally end the walk with lunch at a local village pub. New members are very welcome; just call or email me using the contact details below. For our November walk we met at The Hare Public House in Loddington to order lunch before driving just over a mile to our start point which was the village church at Thorpe Malsor. Sixteen of us set out on a pleasant autumnal day for our 4½ mile walk. Leaving the village church behind us we headed towards the Cransley Reservoir where we crossed over the dam and continued into the village of Great Cransley. From there we followed a bridleway through open countryside towards Kettering. Having passed under a now dismantled railway we proceeded to cross open fields where we rescued a sheep which had managed to get its head stuck in a wire fence before progressing back to Thorpe Malsor and the short drive back to the pub for an enjoyable lunch.
New members are welcome so for more details please contact the group co-ordinator
Writers Group— Horror in two hundred and fifty words! The story ‘The Ring’ had it all. ‘Fate’ was rather longer since we got two fates for the price of one, but then that’s fate for you! Finally we had a ‘Highly Commended’ entry for a national Newspaper competition. Change is in the air and there are only—how many?— shopping days to Christmas so our next meeting will be as usual on the first Tuesday (5 December) at the usual time (from 2-4) but, for a seasonal change, at the Kino Lounge. You will find the Kino Lounge in Kettering Market Place, next door to Wildwood, (formerly Mr Ray’s). I can recommend their coffee and nibbles and you may like to pop in early as I am told they serve a choice lunch—whatever suits your prandial plans. You are welcome to join us and just watch and observe or you can take part and bring some of your own writing with you to share. Choose your own subject, or bring your thoughts on any seasonal subject such ‘Red and Green’. Maybe Charles Dickens will give you some inspiration. See you there!
