Kettering U3A November 2013

19th November 2013 Kettering U3A Year 10 Newsletter 05 Today 19th November 2013 The Work Of A Magistrate Wendy Curtis

From the Chairman Autumn is upon us, the clocks have changed, the weather has become almost wintry - all in all a pretty gloomy situation, thank goodness for U3A! By the time you read this we will have enjoyed our 10th Anniversary Tea at Wicksteed Park and will have the Christmas meeting to look forward to. Looking back at the November 2012 “words of wisdom” I found myself thinking “what a difference a year makes”. We had concerns about the future of Kettering U3A as the Committee was well under-strength, due in part, to the number of vacant positions. I am pleased to say that November 2013 is a totally different picture, we have a full Committee, thriving interest groups and continue to attract new members. I hope you have all had the opportunity to see the new information boards, please tell us what you think about them, any suggestions on how to make them more informative are very welcome. Finally, I would like to say a very BIG thank you to Freda Smith, our webmaster, for all her work in setting the website up and maintaining it for the past few years. Freda did this whilst also carrying out the busy role of secretary, both of these roles took up a lot of her time, so thanks again Freda – we are very grateful for all your commitment over the years. Freda has handed this job over to Richard Boyles, Newsletter Editor, who I know is set to continue the good work.

It must be sign of senility when one arranges a dental appointment on the morning one is expecting a houseful of ladies. The card making was in full swing on Tuesday when I returned, still with all my teeth! and a frantic morning followed with the usual array of delightful cards. On Wednesday I managed to be around and once again a most enjoyable morning was had but not quite so hectic. Our Origami skills are improving tremendously! I am so grateful to the members who make these mornings such a delight. The next meetings will be on December 3rd and 4th so look forward to seeing you all. Contact: Mary Earl 01536 522456

Discussion Group —

A lively meeting was held on 8th October when we discussed who we would like to be marooned with on a desert island. Ray Mears and Bear Grylls were among the more practical suggestions with other people looking for conversation or delicious meals. One lovely suggestion was made by a gentleman who would take his wife. Owing to circumstances completely out of my control the Group meetings in November and December are very disrupted. The November meeting has been abandoned but the December meeting will go ahead as normal on December 10th in the Parish Rooms at 2pm. There will be a light-hearted quiz and members will be able to tell us what they would really like from Santa. Looking forward to seeing you all then.

Computer Group — The new beginners classes are progressing slowly and we are still learning about Files and Folders. Members want to continue for a fourth session on this subject so I have adjusted the programme accordingly. We cover all versions of Windows and Apple Mac and some members now have the well publicised Windows 8, so we are getting to grips learning that too. All subjects will be covered as we progress in a slow, step by step way. Each lesson is fully supported by a detailed hand-out sheet to take home. More information is on the Computer Group’s internet site below including the revised timetable.

Contact: Richard Boyles 01536 744 753 e-mail: Richard@Boyles.co.uk Country Matters — A visit to Broughton was our destination for our October meeting. We took a circular route around the village starting from The Red Lion pub. Whilst walking up Cransley Hill towards the Blacksmith’s we were very lucky that the Blacksmith came out of the forge just as we approached – he allowed us to see some gates that were destined for Kensington Palace! Weren’t we lucky? And he had no prior knowledge that we were walking around Broughton that day, learning about its history. There was a wonderful display of autumn colours on the trees and lots of conkers had been blown down on the green and in Parson’s spinney as it was quite windy. We all enjoyed a superb meal afterwards in the Red Lion. November’s outing will already have taken place by the time the magazine is in print. We have decided as Christmas is fast approaching together with possible poorer weather conditions we are taking a break until 13th February 2014. Venue meet outside the café in East Carlton Park at 10.30 am for a stroll around the park looking at the snowdrops. Look forward to seeing you all then.

Friday Pop-in - A new member joined us and during discussions it was thought a good idea to invite members to write a resume of their careers to be featured in future newsletters. way of getting to know each other! We meet at the Toller church rooms 10 – 11.30 on the first Friday of every month. New members please come and join us for coffee, exchange of books, magazines and local news. We need your support. The two-second rule In good, dry conditions an alert driver, who is driving a vehicle with first-class tyres and brakes, needs to be at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front.

Kettering U3A Safe Driving Group

Stay safe on the roads Winter is approaching and with it comes bad weather. The weather is an important factor when you’re driving. If it’s really bad, it might be better to postpone your trip or use public transport. If you have to drive there are lots of things that will make your journey safer.

In bad conditions, the safety gap should be doubled to four seconds or even more. How to measure: Choose an obvious stationary reference point ahead, such as a bridge, a tree or a road sign. When the vehicle ahead passes the object, say to yourself, “Only a fool breaks the two-second rule”. If you reach the object before you finish saying it, you’re too close! Multiple collisions often happen because the drivers involved were driving too close and were unable to brake in time. You can avoid such incidents by looking well ahead and keeping your distance. Give yourself time to react.

Seeing and being seen Make sure you start out with clean mirrors, windscreen, windows and lights. Use your washers, wipers and demisters whenever necessary to ensure you can see clearly. In poor daylight, you should use your headlights. Defensive driving Anticipate problems; take avoiding action before they develop. Slow down in good time. Keep your distance from the vehicle ahead. Never brake suddenly. Defensive driving will reduce the likelihood of having to do so.

I hope these few suggestions help to keep you safe on the roads this winter.

REMEMBER: Leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead for controlled braking. Always check in your mirror before braking.

If you’d like to improve any aspect of your driving please contact either Roy or Steve.

When a vehicle behind you is driving too close to you, ease off very gradually and increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front. This will give you more time to react if the driver ahead should slow down or stop suddenly.

Keep your distance Drivers getting too close to the vehicle in front cause many road traffic accidents. For the safety of all in the car, it is essential that every driver is able to judge a safe separation distance in all road, traffic and weather conditions.

Musical Circles 1— Our theme in October was music with a taste of Italy. We started with Autumn from The 4 Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi. We then listened to J S Bach’s Italian Concerto in F Major BWV 971, written for a 2 manual Harpsichord solo. The recording was a version for piano by the controversial pianist Glenn Gould. We then moved to Italian opera with ensemble singing from Act 2 of Rossini’s La Cenerentola. Next was the 3rd movement, Rondo, from Paganini’s Violin Concerto No 1 in D. We ended the first half with Ella Fitzgerald singing Coslow’s Mr Paganini. We then listened to 2 pieces from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly One fine day and The Humming Chorus. We ended our afternoon with Winter from Vivaldi’s 4 Seasons.

Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523867 Looking at Churches — Our October visit was to St.Mary the Virgin in Weldon. It is a beautifully kept church as they received a grant for the millennium and were able to have the stained glass windows cleaned, the walls repainted and new carpets laid making it all look fresh and clean. There are some lovely windows with one modern one designed by a famous artist, Alan Younger. As in Grafton Underwood, the USA donated a window depicting aeroplanes as there was an airbase at Deenethorpe in WW2. There had been a recent visit to the church by a group of the 401st bombardment USA. Some of us climbed a very narrow spiral staircase up the belfry tower, which was very interesting when we got up there. There will be no visit in November, so our next tour is Wednesday, December 18th at 2.0pm at THORPE MALSOR. We will start the New Year with a tour of Wellingborough URC round church in the High Street on Wednesday January 15th 2014 at 2.0pm Contact: Janet Clements 01536 507721 or

Photography Group — The forecast said sunshine but there was not much evidence of it in the morning. However, the forecasters got it right because by the time we met up at 2pm there was a mixture of blue sky and cloud, and the temperature was very mild for the time of year. Five of us met in Fotheringhay village. Some of us walked by the river to get photos of the famous church. Others explored the village, and we all met up outside the church, where more photographs were taken. Some went inside the church. Despite its history and some splendid features we agreed that it was not very photogenic inside, lacking a certain atmosphere and compositional balance. We retired to the pub for coffee and a chat, mostly photographic. Our next meeting will be on Monday 2nd December at 2.00pm in the car park of The Castle, Wellingborough. There is meant to be an exhibition of photographs by Rushden and District Photographic Society in the Gallery Room, plus a display of pictures taken at Santa Pod Raceway on the exhibition wall. We'll take a look at these, and then we can wander about Wellingborough, or visit the museum opposite the Castle, or sit in The Castle café discussing photography. Photos taken by this group can be seen on the group’s page of the Kettering U3A website.

Playford English Country Dancing— We continue to enjoy our dancing at St. Andrew's Church Hall although our numbers have been low recently. New members would be made very welcome. Spanish Conversation— I have changed the name from ‘Basic Spanish’ because this group is no longer suitable for absolute beginners. We continue to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We meet at various members’ houses so there is no charge. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students. We are almost at full capacity but could manage perhaps one or two more members. However, because of the level our members are at, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish.
