Kettering U3A October 2013

15th October 2013 Kettering U3A Year 10 Newsletter 04 Today An Exceedingly Short History Of England from 1066 to Present Tony Boullemier

From the Chairman Many thanks to Mary for “holding the fort” last month. I was visiting the USA and Canada “celebrating” a BIG birthday! The speaker, I understand, continued the high quality that we have become used to this year so far. Thanks must go to all concerned for their hard work in finding such good people. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip with around 30 others and not surprisingly found other U3A members from other parts of the UK in the group, just as I had done on an earlier trip to France. One man, whose wife was the U3A member, commented “U3A seems to be a really good organisation and I can’t wait to retire and join it – they do so much!” This made me stop and think about our U3A and how we very often take it all for granted. Our tenth Anniversary celebration will (make sure you’ve got your ticket), hopefully, remind us of the benefits of belonging to such a thriving group and the commitment to making sure we continue to be successful. We can’t do it, however, without the support of our group leaders, membership, and a strong Committee. New members are essential to all organisations so please “spread the word”, think about joining the Committee or help in any way you can. Let’s make sure the next 10 years are as successful as the last! Cyril Young

Visits and Events As many of you are aware a NON REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT is required for you put your name down on any of the arranged trips. Theatre tickets are payable in advance as theatres will only hold a group booking for a limited period. Should you wish to cancel after you have confirmed a booking it is your responsibility to find a person willing to take your place and reimburse you accordingly. In some instances, if we have a waiting list for example, we will put you in touch with someone who has shown an interest. ALL COACH FARES ARE SUBJECT TO NUMBERS In many instances we are unaware of final numbers so we cannot confirm the cost of the coach until this is ascertained. We now include a gratuity amount in the costing to include coach drivers and where applicable site guides. If we need to cancel through lack of support then those who have paid will get a full refund. Cheques should be made payable to U3A Kettering No. 2 A/C Thank you for your forbearance in this matter. Maureen. Our trip to the Poppy Factory The journey to Richmond was full of traffic delays which meant we were late for the presentation. However we were warmly welcomed and shown around. We met many of the people working on making the poppies: many are ex military and some disabled. It was very interesting to learn how and why the factory was started. We made our own poppies and were shown how the Queen's wreath is made. The weather proved kind enough for those who wanted to walk down by the river and some enjoyed a visit to the pub whilst others partook of their picnics. We had cause to thank our wonderful NHS service for the timely help with one of our party who was taken ill. Fortunately she was able to join us for the homeward journey and after a visit to her own GP the next day she was declared fit. So in all the whole day was full of interest.

Trips & Visits 03 Nov 2013 The Glen Miller Orchestra. Cancelled due to lack of support. Christmas Shopping visit to Trentham Village Thursday 07 Nov 2013. Coach now £22.00 pp. We do need more numbers to support this trip! The Royal & Derngate Wednesday 13 Nov 2013 The Buddy Holly Story Matinee 2.30pm. Seats held. Six people took tickets, the rest were cancelled. The Royal & Derngate Monday 20 January 2014 Don Quixote the Moscow City Ballet evening seats held @ £28.00 payment due to reserve seat. I am still holding tickets but they must be reserved and paid for at this meeting. PLEASE NOTE: We have introduced a new system for trips and theatres whereby a non refundable deposit will be asked for when you put your name down. This arrangement has been introduced as we lost quite a lot of money due to cancellations and this measure has become necessary to prevent further losses.

The trip to the poppy factory was from a suggestion by Jan Day who fortunately suggested it in time for arrangements to be made. If anyone has ideas of where they would like to visit please advise me or any committee member. Always bear in mind the time factor as we only enjoy one meeting a month with information in the newsletter, time to think it out, then collection of funds to finance the venture. I am happy to accept viable suggestions my phone number is 01832 732 361. Maureen Curd

Canals & Waterways— In September we visited Shardlow Heritage Centre Derbyshire. We were given a conducted tour through the village by Sheila Cooke who helps run the centre. Sheila gave us an insight in to how the canals and village were run by three family businesses. At one point the village had fourteen pubs but now only supports three.

Card Making 1— As always, happy and productive mornings. The quality of the cards being produced goes from strength to strength and everyone is so willing to share ideas and new equipment too. Discussion Group— It was good to resume our discussions in September and a lively meeting it was too. The topic was "Baby Boomers, Trials or Treasures" and there were diverse opinions as to this. In the end we concluded that this generation had fared pretty well but were a useful and needed part of society. So probably, treasures! This month we are choosing whom to take to a desert island with us so should be interesting. Chris Holden will be leading this meeting. On November 12th, Glynis Hall will be leading us with the topic "Women's Lib. Has it done society any favours?" Time to get our bra-burning ideas working. Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 2pm in the Parish Church Rooms on the Market Place. Contact: Mary Earl on 01536 522456

Computer Group — The new beginners classes have started and in the first two we learnt about Files and Folders. We cover all versions of Windows and Apple Mac and some members now have the well publicised Windows 8 so we are getting to grips learning that too. All subjects will be covered as we progress in a slow, step by step way. Each lesson is fully supported by a detailed hand-out sheet to take home. More information and video tutorials will soon be on the Computer Group’s internet site below

Country Matters— This month a sizeable group of us started our walk in Ashton, famous for the conker championships. Ashton is a very picturesque village with plenty of thatched cottages many of which were rebuilt in the early 1900’s money being provided by one of the Rothschild family, famous for banking. We walked past an old watermill and continued our walk along the River Nene. As it was a cloudy day we only spotted a few dragonflies and butterflies, not like when Jean and I did the recce in August. We stopped to admire the view of the river as we crossed the road bridge, then continued walking back along the Oundle Pilgrimage Way, which took us back to Ashton. We enjoyed lunch at the Chequered Skipper. Our next walk is scheduled for 10 October at Broughton meeting in the Red Lion pub and will have taken place by the time the magazine is in print . November’s venue is Corby Boating Lake car park where we will go for a stroll around the woods. Look forward to seeing you on 14 November at 10.30 am.

Kettering U3A Safe Driving Group — With the winter approaching the Safe Driving Group are planning to set up a session at a local skidpan. Skid Pan driver training is a fun and safe way of learning how to control a car when driving on icy or hazardous road surfaces. Each driver gets personal tuition from experienced advanced drivers in both front and rear wheel drive cars. The training session lasts about three hours and the cost is £95 per person. German-2 Conversation for Absolute Beginners— The established group for basic German Conversation remains oversubscribed so this new group for absolute beginners has been formed. This group meets every other Wednesday 1.30 to 3.00pm. Contact: Joe Fletcher 01536 722399 Heartbeat— By the time this news letter is published we will have had our October meeting. I shall be away for the January walk, Monday 7th January 2014. If one of the members will arrange it I shall be pleased. If no one is able to stand in, the next meeting will be in April. I will advertise that in the newsletters and at the meetings. Contact: Bridget Ling 01536 414810

Lunch Club—Thank you Janet Chivers for arranging a nice lunch at the Manor House in Corby (Tresham College). Good food and It was very well presented. For some students it was their first time at serving. October’s lunch will be hosted by Elizabeth York, at Vivo's in Burton Latimer. Please support her if you can. No Lunch in November, because we have an early Xmas lunch in December, which is being held at the Masonic Centre in Corby. Tickets are now on sale. See Ray Bradbury at this months meeting. Help is required for next year if the Lunch Club is to keep going. Please give some thought to help organize a lunch one month next year. I will have a new sheet with me at both lunches in Oct & Dec. It's nice to go to new venues, but we can always go to places we have been before. If you decide on a month, but are unable to do it, I can ask another person to change with you if that helps. It is always a good idea to stay local January and February in case the weather is bad. Please give it some thought. The Lunch Club has been going now for ten years; we don't want to see it stop. Contact: Rosemary Cooke 01536 356899

Italian Classes — One Italian class is running. If there is anyone else interested please contact: John Sellick 01536 517878 or montemassi@talktalk.net

Safe Driving Thoughts— Janet and myself have just finished six, 1-hour sessions with Roy Franklin, assessing our safe-driving abilities, at separate times I hasten to add. What an eye-opener. It doesn't do to be sensitive of criticism, but this was done in a very professional way. Criticism is not the correct word, more advising as to what would be a safer manoeuvre than the one chosen. Everyone should take advantage of this course as it is only too easy to get into bad habits, and with today's heavy traffic you can't be too careful. I should improve on that and say it’s a must. After all, it’s free and both advisers give up a lot of their free time to do this, so much appreciated. Thanks again to Roy from us both. Roy & Janet Clements

Advance Notice — Lunch Club Christmas Special will take place at The Masonic Hall in Corby on Tuesday 3rd December at 12 noon. The Masonic Hall has good parking and is easy to find but maps will be provided. The menu will be Winter Vegetable Soup with crusty roll and butter. Roast Turkey with Stuffing and Chipolatas, Roast Potatoes and Parsnips, Brussels Sprouts and Carrots. Christmas Pudding with Brandy Sauce. Coffee/Tea and Mince Pies. Paper Hats and Christmas Crackers. Special dietary requirements can be catered for if notified. All for the sum of £14 per head. BOOKINGS NOW BEING TAKEN. Contact: Ray Bradbury 01536 516587 8

Musical Circles 1— On Monday, 16 September musical circles 1 met at 137 London Road, Kettering. We celebrated the bicentenary of Verdi and Wagner. After a feast of music, we watched act two of the Finnish version of Verdi's "Macbeth". This was over 20 years old, but highly enjoyable. Gwyneth Holland

Knit and Natter - We are all busy knitting items to be sold at the Crazy Hats Christmas Fare. The picture shows just a few of the things that have been made. The blanket Jean knitted was taken to the Crazy Hats office. They were very pleased with it and are going to sell raffle tickets beforehand and on the day, to hopefully to make a nice lot of money for them. If anybody has any knitted items they could donate we would be pleased to have them.

Musical Circles 2— A late change of venue was forced upon us when one of the members of the group was unfortunately taken into hospital at short notice. Hopefully by the time you read this she is back in circulation and in better health. The theme of the programme for this meeting was “The Numbers Game”. The challenge was to play pieces of music that fitted in with the numbers 1 to 15. This was achieved by selecting the following:

Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523867 Looking at Churches—In September we went to St.John the Baptist church in Corby Old Village. The churchyard has been greatly diminished in fairly recent years to make way for the main road, so now the church stands almost alone at a busy road junction. A vibrant young vicar told us a lot about the history of Corby, as well as that of the church. He pointed out things that we would have missed on our own, such as crosses scratched on the wall where people had come for comfort or sanctuary before carrying on their journey.

The results of the challenge produced a nice variety of music and made for a very pleasant afternoon’s listening. Perhaps others might like to take up this numbers challenge? We look forward to our next programme in October. Contact: Eileen Mason 01536 725925

We enjoyed a welcome cup of tea before going on to the newly opened Heritage Centre in Corby, which Richard Boyles had organized for us, so it was an interesting afternoon. Photography Group — In September we paid a return visit to Titchmarsh Nature Reserve. The weather was good, and we managed to walk the 4 miles or so around the Reserve. We saw swans, herons, grebes, coots, cormorants, and a variety of gulls amongst the birds on the lake. Unfortunately they were a long way from the land and so we struggled to get reasonable close-ups of them. We looked at the hides, but the undergrowth was so plush that it was unlikely that many birds would be tempted to approach them. A bit of gardening required, we felt. We also saw lots of dragonflies and damselflies, but in the heat of the day they were too active to stay still for long. We found some interesting horned sheep doing their bit to keep the grass grazed in the Reserve, and the back-lit teasel heads are always tempting subjects. The Tea Pot café in Aldwincle seems to have disappeared – has it closed down? So we didn’t get our refreshing cuppa at the end of the walk. We are hoping that October will bring interesting light and weather, and so we will probably visit Fotheringhay. Photos of the church from the river are always impressive, and if we could get a nice sky or a bit of mist that would help the atmosphere. If the weather is too bad we will meet indoors instead. Playreading— Darling I'm Home by Jack Popplewell our play for September gave us all the opportunity to get in character and some fine readings emerged. It was the story of role reversal between an unsuccessful business man and his bored wife. After initial resentment the husband begins to enjoy his new situation until his unmarried daughter arrives unexpectedly with her twins. This really upsets the applecart but needless to say all ends well. Our next dates are October 10th and 24th Contact: Carole Bradbury 01536 516587

Spanish Conversation—The Spanish conversation group (I have changed the name from ‘Basic Spanish’ because this group is no longer suitable for absolute beginners) continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We meet at various members’ houses so there is no charge. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students. We are almost at full capacity but could manage perhaps one or two more members. However, because of the level our members are at, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish. Contact: Bob Thorogood 01933 650551 or bob@rltservices.co.uk
