19th September 2017 Kettering U3A Year 14 Newsletter 3

Today

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE QUIZ From the Chairman— September. Autumn term, and a welcome: welcome back to members of Groups that have been on summer break and to all those who have renewed their membership; welcome to all new members; and to all new Groups coming this month into being, our good wishes for their success and our heartfelt appreciation of those members who undertake responsibility for these, and indeed all, our Interest Groups. A New Members and Group Leaders meeting is being planned for next month: watch this space. OK: that’s me in my Chairman’s Hat done. Now for a front-page appeal in another, figurative, hat: that of Choir Leader. Sadly the Sing (and Laugh) out Loud Choir has to say good bye to their accompanist Maddie. Please, if there is anyone of you who can play an instrument – preferably piano, even with only one hand – the Choir would be delighted to hear from you. For further information see below.

News — Interest Groups — Visits and Reports Bookworms — We have been reading "Tulip Fever" by Deborah Moggach, set in 17th century Amsterdam, a city in the grip of tulip mania. The story is of a young bride and her elderly husband, who commissions a talented young artist to paint a portrait of them There are twists and turns on every page, and all the readers enjoyed the book. Later this year the film is finally due to be released, and it will be interesting to see the characters come to life on screen.

ACCIDENT — 999 ??

Card Making — After the July and August I have I had, have declared summer is over. Our family have had colds, coughs, flu like virus, on antibiotics, sheer exhaustion, granddaughter in hospital with large tonsil ( all well now) and husband in hospital. He's also ok now. There is a light and end of tunnel. Drum roll please. This card group is to continue. Thank you U3A for keeping me sane. If you wish to join this happy band of crafters give us call.

After one of our group meetings a member fell on a slippery pavement and needed assistance. A visit to hospital was required for treatment, but fortunately no broken bones. This highlights three essential things that group leaders are required to do.

Busy Needles and Banter — Busy Needles. Despite Hols and ups and downs, Busy Needles members have been able to benefit KGH (especially with twiddle muffs), Wood Green Sanctuary, and especially Life for African Mothers. This last charity’s main work (all completely voluntary and set up by one Welsh former nurse) is to provide midwifery training, drugs to combat, in particular, post-partum haemorrhaging in sub-Saharan Africa – mainly Liberia and Sierra Leone - , and “baby bundles” of clothing, blankets and a soft toy, which are knitted and donated by Groups such as ours. (Large items such as full-size quilts are sold or raffled, with the permission of the donor, to help to raise funds.) Sierra Leone is currently in direst need due to the devastating effect of recent mudslides. One charity cannot legally raise money for another, so we do our bit by sending our handiwork, via Cardiff, to where it is most needed. We are hugely grateful, too, to non-members of our Group who have donated both wool and garments. Squares are welcome too: I sew them together; Marian edges; Janet acts as courier. Contact:

Creative Cards — The group will next be meeting on Wednesday 14 September where we will be making some art deco cards and get well soon cards. There are no vacancies within the group at the moment, but if you wished to join when a vacancy does arise please let Eileen or Maggi have your details. We will shortly be starting to make Christmas Cards – yes I know it is a few months away but crafters have to make an early start to get all their cards made in time for Christmas. Country Matters — In Derek's absence, I hosted the August Country Matters Group walk. On Aug 10th. a small group of members had a very enjoyable wander around the reservoir at Sywell Country Park. The weather was very good, and lots of wildlife was present as were two Spitfires from nearby Sywell aerodrome ! The majority of our walk was on hard paths so the previous weeks’ rain did not cause any problems. After our walk we went to The Aviator at Sywell, and had a very good lunch. Mutton being the favourite choice ! After lunch we spent quite some time watching a wide variety of aircraft coming in and out. In fact we got as close as 20feet to one Spitfire ! Contact:

Canals & Waterways— If you want a pleasant and leisurely afternoon out, the open water boat trip at Dudley is just the job. It is part of the Black Country Museum. On a warm sunny afternoon over twenty of us enjoyed what should have been a two and a half hour trip but turned out to be three and a half hour trip. As our Chatham trip is in September, I will not be at the next U3A meeting I have booked the boat trip in Stratford on October 12th for 12.10 pm and the behind the scenes tour of the RSC for 4.45 pm for those who expressed an interest. A few Places are still available at a cost of £5 for the boat trip and £8.50 for the behind the scenes tour at the RSC. Our planning meeting is in November so get your thinking caps on and come up with some ideas for next year’s programme.

In August we tried using the Alfred East Art Gallery as a venue which was really nice but will be too expensive for future meetings.

In the September meeting we learnt how to use Facebook safely while communicating with friends and family across the world. We moved to a new venue which will become our regular meeting place. We now meet at the Counties Community Centre, 28 Hertford Road, Kettering NN15 6LG. The charge is £10 for two hours which we will share between those present. Gardening Group — The group is now taking its Winter Break, resuming in the Spring. Suggestions for activities next season always welcome.

History - The History Group met on the 7th September but unfortunately our speaker was unable due to come because she had gastric problems. However, all was not lost and thanks to David Clayton, we were able to present a DVD on Bygone Northampton. This was very interesting and showed a number of the Carnival parades in Northampton and elsewhere, Northampton during the war plus the development of the Fire Brigade and Ambulance Service. It also covered the procession of the judges for the sessions over the year, the demolition of the power station and also the Coronation and Jubilee celebrations. At the October meeting we will have a very welcome return visit from Roy Smart who will telling us all about the Amy Johnson, the Queen of the Air. Roy’s presentations are also very interesting and he includes background history to the period in question with music, family history etc. If you would like to come along to the meeting, it will be held starting at 2pm in the Counties Community Centre on the Pytchley Road estate.

If we find someone, we may be able to do these short walks once a month, instead of every 3 months.

Looking at Churches — On Wednesday 16th August twenty four of us visited the church of St. Peter in the village of Aldwincle where we were given a talk by their two churchwardens. The Abbot of Peterborough was probably responsible for the building of St. Peters Church in the reign of Richard 1st. In the 12th Century the church had no side aisles. Firstly the north aisle was added and the west cylindrical pier in that aisle is probably late Norman and is dated around 1190. Next the south aisle was added in approximately 1250 and the north aisle was rebuilt in 1290.

The church has some lovely stained glass windows, ranging from medieval in the chancel, Victorian and a modern piece depicting St. Peter to mark the Millennium. The church tower is 14th century and has five bells which were hung in 1903, the pews are Victorian and the oak screen is from the 1920’s. There are some carved grotesque heads, animals and birds clinging with their heads hanging downwards. Some of them look like knights, and one looks like a Bishop. Some of the heads in the body of the church are probably Green men as they are surrounded by ivy leaves. Green men did not appear in England until the 12th century, but they had been in existence throughout the Roman kingdom since the 1st century A.D. When the floors were renewed because of dry rot two skeletons were discovered which were re-interred. A time capsule was also buried in the nave to mark the Millennium. Afterwards some of us went to the Old Barn Wadenhoe for tea and cake. Our next visit is on Wednesday 20th September to St. Michael and All Angels Church Street Wadenhoe PE8 5ST and again we are going to the Old Barn afterwards. Our planned church visit on the 18th October to St. Nicholas Church in Bulwick has had to be postponed so hopefully I can organise another visit at short notice.

Lunch Club - The September Lunch Club was organised by Tony Loft and was held at The Hare in Loddington. The food was excellent. However despite Tony’s great efforts the service could have been better. When a lunch is organised, the organiser provides the venue’s Landlord or Manager with a breakdown of what individuals have ordered to enable them to cater for the meals. Unfortunately the Hare’s staff decided they wanted to know who was sitting on which table and what they had ordered. This led to a delay before everyone was served and also caused some tension. Despite this we enjoyed the meal and our thanks go to Tony for organising the lunch. The Lunch Club meeting for October will be held at The Old Friar in Twywell and the organiser will be Marian Tucker. If you would like to join us please book your place and choice of menu at the October main meeting – Marian will be there with menus and booking sheets. Two courses will be £10.50. You will be very welcome to come and join us. We are a friendly group and have a good time putting the world to rights while we have our meal. Photography Group — In September the Photography Group paid a visit to Oundle to look at techniques for photographing buildings successfully. After a brief sprinkling of rain the afternoon proved dry and warm. The cloudy sky was ideal for photographing the details in buildings. Sunny skies are not very good for this because of the extreme contrast, with bright highlights and dark shadows. And yet isn't it strange that most people go out to photograph buildings when it is sunny with blue skies?! The downside of the flat lighting is that the sky can be a bit featureless and boring, requiring a bit of post-processing perhaps to bring out the cloud detail. The main issue that was addressed on our trip was the problem of converging verticals. Surprisingly, most buildings tend to be taller than we are. So when we photograph them we tend to tilt the camera upwards. This makes the building look as if it is falling down, with the side walls sloping inwards. To avoid this the camera needs to be absolutely square on to the building, both horizontally and vertically. This may require a higher position, a wider angle lens to "get it all in", or to move further away, possibly then using a telephoto lens. Continued overleaf

The Christmas menu should be available at the September meeting and you can book your place and choose from the selection available Organisers: Elizabeth York and Kathleen Alton Musical Circles 2 — We started the afternoon with Haydn's Military symphony followed by the waltz from Swan Lake, changing tempo a ballad from Diana karll then two numbers by Harry James, after refreshments we listen to arias from Rigoletto and La Traviata then a prelude by Chopin, Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven finishing with Mozart's Sinfonia concertante. The next meeting is on the 20th September. Contact: Eileen Mason 01536 725925 eileenm1935@gmail.com Sing (and laugh) Out Loud Christmas is Coming!! The Choir continues to progress amazingly and to grow: this month we have welcomed three new members, and are delighted to have Jill Dee, from Singing for Pleasure, as a guest while her foot heals. Tabletennis’s loss is our, albeit temporary, gain. The only dark spot on our landscape is that we are, alas, losing Maddie, our pianist. We wish her all the best and thank her for her sterling work hitherto. Meanwhile, we have our fingers crossed for a replacementT Contact: Mary Wildman 01536 741 222 marywildman365@gmail.com

Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Normally the teaching is a joint enterprise between Bob Thorogood and Bill Simon. We now meet at the Hertford Road Community centre. The room costs £10 per session so less than £1 each. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students and we are now well on the way to completing that. August was a quiet month for us as the room was being renovated but we are back to normal for September We are now really at full capacity but could start a waiting list for anyone who has a good level of understanding of the language.

Photoshop can cure slight problems with sloping buildings but it is much better to get it right in camera, especially if you are taking lots of pictures of buildings, such as if you are on holiday or are having a day out in London or some other photogenic city. If you cannot avoid the sloping verticals, then go for it and make the picture really slope, such as making a church tower look like a "rocket ship"! As a bonus to our visit we were given an unexpected guided tour and history lesson about Oundle School. I say "we". In fact there were only two of us on this Oundle visit. Due to a variety of reasons the attendance at recent meetings of this group has been very low, and of course that casts doubt about its viability. We are not looking for people to "make up the numbers" but people with a genuine interest in photography and who are keen to learn and progress. If such people do not exist in sufficient numbers in the Kettering U3A then maybe we need to call time on the Photography Group. Contact: Trevor Rudkin 01536 711 976 trevor.rudkin@gmail.com

Walking Group - The walking group meets on the 1st Wednesday every month at different locations for a walk lasting 2 to 2½ hours starting at 10:00am. These walks are usually between 4 and 6 miles and taken at a relatively leisurely pace. The group generally end the walk with lunch at a local village pub. New members are very welcome; just call or email me using the contact details below. Our September walk started from The Saracen’s Head Public House in Little Brington with 13 of us setting out on a day that was forecasted to be dry but gave us just enough rain in two short bursts to get coats on, not that it spoilt the walk in any way. We left the village and headed out across open undulating countryside in the direction of Upper Heyford before looping back towards Nobottle and on to Great Brington before returning to the pub for an enjoyable lunch. Despite the recent wet weather the ground conditions for our 4½ mile walk were very good. Our next walk will be on Wednesday 4th October and will be announced by email the week before to all members of the group on my contact list as the starting location has not been fixed as yet. If you are not on my list and you would like to join us please drop me an email or give me a call a few days before the walk. New members are welcome so for more details please contact the group co-ordinator
