From the Chairman— So, here we are almost at the end of 2017; in many KU3A ways at least, a successful 12 months. I’m very pleased to announce that, following last month’s appeals Peter Baker has agreed to take on the role of Publicity Officer and a surplus keyboard has found its way to Mike Fuller. 2018 will still see us appealing for help “front of house”, however, and the Choir looking for another accompanist. What else will the New Year bring? Well, the monthly meeting in March (the 20th; closer than you think) will be Hobbies and Interests Day - a chance for ordinary members, as well as Group Leaders and Committee, to show off what interests them perhaps beyond or within U3A. You won’t have to stand up and give a presentation; all you will need is a table in the body of the hall, to display your stamp albums, fretwork, lapidary, bonsai, robots, crochet, handbells, jewelry, cards, cakes, paintings, poetry, whatever, and possibly sell some of your items. We have done this once before, but some years ago, and we have had lots of new members since then. So far, we have had some response but have space for lots more. If you’d like to take part, please contact Di Tebbutt as soon as may be to book a table. Meanwhile it remains only for me to wish you a very Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year.

Card Making — It always fun in my house when we do card making as the ladies say, " well I've learnt something new today! or I'm so pleased I made these cards".

Bookworms — We watched "The 100-year old man who climbed out of a window and disappeared", as we had read the book which was hilarious, Allan, the 100 -year old man, escaped from his care home and journeyed around the world, accompanied by people and an elephant whom he met along his journey. Other than to say he was an expert in explosions, I will not give away any more of the story. It was a very funny film and thoroughly enjoyed

I still have room for more members to join us. I heard someone at the meeting say , I couldn't do that card making it's too difficult... Well I follow the KISS rule. ( Keep it simple sweetheart ) Make a new years Resolution and try card making

by all. We will not now be meeting again until the New Year, and our next book is "The Rose of Sebastopol". I hope all the Bookworms have a lovely Christmas. Contact:

We have one last meeting this side of Christmas and we will be making last minute Christmas cards to be sent to the people we have missed off our card list so far – I have certainly remembered a few. We will continue in the New Year and will return to making birthday cards for our families and friends and of course enjoying a good chat over a cup of tea. Contact: Eileen Mason

Discussion Group — The next meeting January 9th at the Parish Church Halls at the usual 2pm. Subject:- It's 25 years since texting began. Do you text, twitter or Facebook or is it something that has passed you by? What's more do you care or would your life be at a disadvantage without them? Or have we to embrace them and move into the real world and get out of the fur lined rut in which it is so easy for the older generation to languish? That could be enough to keep us busy for fifteen minutes so have some other topic up your sleeve. Donald Trump is excluded.

Obituary - Many of our earlier members will be saddened to hear of the death of Geoff White. Geoff was the first treasurer of Kettering U3A and was in the post for three years. His no fuss approach was refreshing and he made a much valued contribution in getting the U3A off the ground. Geoff became a member of many groups including my "3D Decoupage" group where he produced some excellent pictures. Those who knew him will miss him.

Country Matters — Our walk in November started from The Carpenter’s Arms in Irchester walking from the village across fields to Irchester Country Park. It was a beautiful, sunny day and fortunately the footpath across to the park wasn’t too muddy, considering the rainfall over the previous day. The autumnal foliage on the trees and on the ground was enhanced by the brilliant blue sky. During our walk we noticed several wooden sculptures of various birds, animals and even the Vikings! Hidden in the woods were ‘dinosaur eggs’ and the occasional dinosaur! Also noted were several newly erected viewpoints across strategic places across the old quarry face, and a timeline laid out along the main footpath, explaining the history of the geological area from the dawn of time to the present day. We now have a break over the next two months – so our next meeting will be in February possibly at Waddenhoe to enjoy the snowdrops – but we will confirm the details nearer the time. Contact:

Family History— The December meeting was cancelled due to heavy snow, so instead of a report here is a Victorian Christmas greeting card for you all.

We have plenty of space for new members to join so feel free to come along to see if you like it. 8th Jan - Workshop 6 - How to Write Your Family History Book ? Come along with some ideas and examples and bring your Laptop & we'll help each other. Meetings are held on the second Monday, 2-4pm at the LDS Church, Rothwell Road, Kettering located between the crematorium and Brewers Fayre/Premier Inn. www.U3AKettering.co.uk

Knit and Natter - We had a lovely suprise, after taking our nativity scene to The Beehive in Northampton for their Christmas sale we were very pleased to hear they auctioned it off and raised £100.

Friday Pop-In - Outside the Kino it was freezing cold. Inside it was warm and buzzing. Our First Friday Pop-in is the place to be and plenty of us turned out to endorse that claim. We shared cheerful chat over croissants and coffee (other beverages are available!): chat about books; chat about Christmas; chat about grandchildren, teaching, bridge and even youthful memories of camping. Never a dull moment S

Hopefully the weather will have been good to us, but at least the company and refreshments will have been bright and sunny ! The meeting will have been at Cranford, adjourning to the Old Forge refreshments. The January walk will be around the old part of Burton Latimer taking in the woods at the back of the parish church on Monday Jan 8th. We will meet in the public car park in front of the Old Vic pub ready to move off at 10-00am. Refreshments will be taken at the Seasons Garden Centre at the other end of Cranford Road. Although the prime object is to walk energetically, all are welcome.

Whatever the weather, do come along to next month’s Pop-in on the first Friday of the month (5 January), same time (10:00 to about 11:30), same place (the Kino Lounge, Market Place, next door to Wildwood, formerly Mr Ray’s). Janet is looking forward to seeing you all there—a great way to start the New Year in great company— and meanwhile would like to wish you all a very happy festive season. German Basic Conversation — We meet every second Wednesday at 9.30 am., in order to try and speak some German. We are little more than beginners who learn everyday expressions ie. to meet and greet: to ask for directions: to request travel tickets; to order meals and to locate places: to discuss the weather, etc. 'Repetition' is our motto and it is a test of the memory: that is where the fun comes in. We now have one or two vacancies, you are welcome to give it a try.

2018 PROGRAMME Jan 8th Burton Latimer Feb 12th Rothwell March 12th Wicksteed Park April 9th Boughton House/Weekley May 14th Cranford All meetings are on the second Monday of the month, and start at 10-00 am. We walk on good paths, and the terrain is never strenuous . Usually the walk will take 30 minutes, and then we have a cuppa somewhere congenial.

Looking at Churches — On Wednesday 15th November twenty two of us enjoyed a talk at St. Nicholas church in Marston Trussell followed by homemade cakes, tea and coffee in the village hall. The name Marston Trussell comes from Merston meaning marshland and the Trussell family who were

History - The subject at the December meeting was Barton Seagrave – the land, church and people and it was presented by one of our own members, Anne Pegg who has published a book on the same subject. We found out that Saxon and Roman remains had been found in the area and that Barton had been a small hamlet but has now grown to a much larger small town that has been absorbed into Kettering. The main part of the church is Saxon and there was a castle the stones of which were used by the locals to build their homes etc. If you would like to obtain a copy of Anne’s book, please contact her directly. As the January meeting falls on New Years Day there will not be a meeting. The February meeting will take place on the first Monday in February and the subject will be Deene Park. House Administrator at Deene Park will be coming to tell us about the Brudenell family who lived and still live at Deene Park. Contact: Eileen Mason

well known in the area for four hundred years until the 16th century. The River Welland was originally navigable to Market Harborough but as the village is on a flood plain, during the Civil War retreating Cavaliers from Naseby were cornered and killed. The remains of seventeen cavaliers are buried in the churchyard under a fir tree. However, there are no headstones to this effect. The present church was built between the 12th and 14th centuries. The arched doorway timbers of the porch may have come from a 14th century Danish ship stranded on the Welland when it was navigable. Inside the church is one piece of medieval glass, the rest of the lovely stained glass windows are Victorian; a solid oak chest is from the 13th century and is still in use today. The oak pulpit is Jacobean and the church has a leprosy window and six bells. The Mark Brewster memorial commemorates a 16th century adventurer who was a wool merchant and church benefactor; however in his earlier days he was a Baltic Sea pirate who was hunted down and taken to Russia to be executed in Moscow in 1612 for his previous crimes. Lead has been removed from the roof of the church three times and now the roof is covered in steel. The church also has bats and they have a bat deterrent in the chancel to deter them. There will be no church visits in December 2017 or January 2018. I will email all members of the group on my contact list ten days before our February visit to ascertain numbers together with any additional or a change of information. Lunch Club - Over 30 members of the Kettering U3A had a very enjoyable Christmas Lunch at the Stirrup Cup in Barton Seagrave on the 5th December 2017. There were number of choices for everyone from the usual Christmas lunch to Steak or Fish Pie etc. Judging by the chatter, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves with plenty of laughter followed by silence when everyone was working their way through their meal. Many thanks to Elizabeth York and Kathleen Alton for arranging the lunch.

Musical Circles 2 —

The group met in November and enjoyed a programme called 'pot luck'. Each member in turn chose a number at random from a selection of discs and then chose a number representing the number of tracks on that disc. For example the first disc chosen was number 5 , and then track 9 from the 18 on that disc. This turned out to be Rossini's '' Largo al Factotum'' from 'The Barber of Seville. The choices were completely at random but resulted in a very good programme including works by Charles-Marie Widor, Tchaikovsky, Scarlatti, Brahms, JS Bach, Carl Orff, Beethoven, Schubert, Francisco Tarrega, Mozart, Fritz Kreisler, Verdi and Morton Gould. What with light refreshments and a good gossip putting the world to rights it proved an interesting and enjoyable afternoon. Ray Bradbury. Sing (and laugh) Out Loud Today, December 19th, please be in your seats by 2pm and be ready to join in with our carolling. This year has seen us grow quite remarkably in numbers and repertoire. From Vaughan Williams English Folk Songs to Handel, Mozart or even Verdi, we’ll give it a go.

Painting & Drawing Classes - We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from September to March. Our venue is at The Parish Hall, Market Place, Kettering, from 1.15pm to 3.15pm. Free parking is next to The Parish Hall, and the church grounds may also be used. Class dates for the WinterTerm are as follows:JANUARY 11TH, 25TH FEBRUARY 8TH, 22ND MARCH 8TH, 22ND (LAST CLASS) (New classes for the Autumn Term start again in September 2018).

We’ve been extraordinarily fortunate in having Norah to play for us this last “Term”, but we do need another pianist at least to share the load. Please, if you can help, - even if you can only play the melody line - let us know. Our regular singing sessions recommence on January 12th, but in the meantime we hope to see, and hear, some of you at least at 11 am on Friday December 22nd outside Cancer Research UK shop (opposite Peacocks and McDonalds). Wassail!

This painting in water colours is called "A Letter For Santa" by Barbara Goodall, which is most appropriate at this time of year. If you are interested in joining the above class please get in touch with either Jo or Barbara, or just come along to one of our classes.

Spanish, Intermediate — The Spanish conversation group continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. Normally the teaching is a joint enterprise between Bob Thorogood and Bill Simon. We now meet at the Hertford Road Community centre. The room costs £10 per session so less than £1 each. We shall start on our new book which is ‘Enjoy Spanish’ in January 2018 We could now accept one or two more members but they would need to have quite a good level of understanding of the language.

Stitchin' Time— We had an afternoon creating knitted baby clothes, a hedgehog, a hat, jumpers, squares, and Christmas bells pictures in cross stitch, followed by tea, mince pies and Christmas tree cakes. No meeting in January, as it comes straight after the New Year, so look forward to seeing all the knitters, crocheters, and stitchers in February. Contact:

Writers Group— For a seasonal break we started our meeting in the congenial surroundings of the Kino Lounge in the Market Square for a warming cup of coffee and a bite while we discussed our future plans. Reviewing our numbers showed that we’ve room for one or two more so if you enjoy writing or would like to sharpen up your skills, you are welcome to come along and join our supportive, friendly group. We next sauntered over to the Library to review our writing. This month’s subject was ‘Red and Green’ and we shared stories of both guilt and of murder. To add contrast we heard of a home move and of the reviving qualities of a nice cup of tea. Comfort and drama, all in one afternoon! Come along and join us. You are welcome just to watch and observe or you can take part and bring some of your own writing with you to share. Choose your own subject— something you’ve written for your grandchildren, perhaps? Or maybe something that has happened to you recently? If you’d like to work to a set subject you can bring your thoughts on ‘A Season’. We’ll meet as usual on the first Tuesday (2 January), at the usual time (from 2-4) and at the usual place (Kettering Library). Meanwhile, have a wonderful Christmas and very best wishes for the New Year and we’ll see you all there at the Library. Don’t forget to put it in your diary!
