Kettering U3A February 2014
18th February 2014 Kettering U3A Year 10 Newsletter 07
Today Flying For Life Ron Sivers
From the Chairman A busy month, not only for me but for all the committee. We agreed plans to revise the Newsletter and will be implementing them soon. A Group Leaders’ meeting was held on 24th January and we have produced an up to date guide for new and existing Group Leaders, which I hope will be a support to them when running a group. Minutes from this meeting will be on the notice board at this meeting. As I have said many times before, our U3A would not be the success that it is without the dedication of our Group Leaders and we all owe them a big thank you for the work that they do. On a more personal note, I have been trying to apply my “rusty” computer skills by producing this months’ Newsletter. Richard is away cruising through the Panama Canal—it’s all right for some! I hope him and Brenda are having a wonderful time but please be back in time for the March Newsletter!! I’ve tried to do a good job and I apologise to all of you who sent in photographs if they haven’t quite turned out as you expected—I don’t quite have the skill that Richard does! Next month’s meeting is going be a bit different as we are not having a speaker but inviting members and groups to share their hobbies/interests with us. Please make sure you see all the information in this Newsletter regarding the changed format of the afternoon and further details of the event. We have had interest from around a dozen individuals and groups wishing to attend the event including Card Making, Knit & Natter, Writers and Watercolour Painting. We do, however, need more so don’t be shy see David Clayton today!
Cyril Next Month — 18th March Something completely different - NO SPEAKER
Registered Charity No. 1108614
Members and Groups will tell us all about their hobbies/interests . PLEASE NOTE REVISED MEETING TIMETABLE, SEE INSIDE FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

Group Coordinator Message A big thank you to all group leaders that attended the meeting on 24th January. Without groups U3A would not exist and we as U3A members are grateful for all your hard work. I was sad to receive notification that Freda Smith was resigning from the leadership of card making group 2 at the same time I was delighted that 2 members of the group were going to continue to run it.

Card Making 1 — What fun we have had this month making cards that have pockets. Once again Mary provided the original cards and we all followed her ideas . Some of us even managed to add our own personnel touches and made totally unique cards. It has been an experience for us all to use different papers and tools to produce these wonderful creations. Running this group for Mary has been great fun and I want to thank her for providing all the
materials and ideas. Next month we will showcase this wonderful groups creations during the "Tell us about it" meeting. Don't forget, ladies, to bring your creations to next card group meeting. Thank you all for your support Marian Tucker

Card Making 2 — At our February meeting we intend to prepare cards for our table at the March monthly meeting. Our Group March meeting is on the 24th, which is a change from our scheduled programme. I am stepping down as Group Leader after that meeting and Marian Tucker has very kindly agreed to take over, with Maggi McGuire’s help, for which I thank them. It is good to know that the Group will continue.I have enjoyed my time as Group Leader; my “students” are a lovely group of people and I have enjoyed their lively company and sharing my knowledge with them. A huge thank you to them all! Freda Smith: Tel: 01536 482368

Discussion Group — 2nd Tuesday of each month The discussion for January was.... Women's Lib has it done society any favours? which led to a very lively discussion from members of the group. The February 11 discussion is Child Obesity which is very topical and I am sure will bring forth some good views on the subject, along with tea and biscuits of course. The March meeting will be taken by Mary who by then will hopefully be back from her travels. I believe the subject will be “Is counselling really necessary?”. This will be March 11 at the Parish Church Rooms 2.00pm till 4.00pm, new members are very welcome.
See many more pictures on the U3A web site.

Golf. Six of us make up this new group and we welcome more members. There are a few who are members of Kettering Golf Club, a few who have brought their clubs out of the garage after several years, and two who play at different courses but not members of any particular club. What it provides is an opportunity to play regularly with other "golfers" at different levels and we welcome that since it provides an opportunity to improve your ability from better players. We don`t ask for handicaps before you join us but a desire to improve, have fun, and don`t take it too seriously !! We meet each Friday at Pytchley Golf Club around 1pm for a T off time for 1.30pm and we book two T times each week. Since currently we only play 9 holes we finish the golf well within two hours and have a coffee afterwards or a beer for those who want it. When the weather improves we can change to 18 holes if requested or change to another day, it depends on what the members want. At present we have three ladies and three men and we are a friendly bunch and welcome new members at differing levels.

Safe Driving—Driving should be a pleasant and enjoyable experience that enables us to make the most of life, but it can also be stressful and even dangerous. A variety of reasons, including a loss of confidence, health problems or bereavement can result in older drivers having problems with driving. If you’ve got any concerns about you’re driving, we’d be pleased to help. Are you experiencing any of these problems:
Knit and Natter - We had our 1st meeting since Christmas, a busy morning catching up with all the news. We have decided our first project is to knit a Nativity Scene for Rothwell Church. We have each taken a character to knit. It is a long time till next Christmas but if they turn out okay we will make some more for a Christmas bazaar. Our next meeting will be Monday 3rd February. Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523867
Returning to driving • I’ve got a full driving licence, but I haven’t driven for a long time. • I’d like some help to restore my confidence on the road. • I’d like a refresher on the Highway Code, road signs and road markings. I’ve previously driven with a manual gearbox and I want to change to an automatic (or vice versa). Concerns about driving • Reverse or parallel parking. • Roundabouts, either mini-roundabouts or large roundabouts with gyratory systems. • Negotiating busy or complex junctions with traffic lights. • Overtaking. Dealing with tailgaters.

Looking at Churches — We started off the New Year with a visit to Wellingborough Round Church which is a United Reformed church. It is beautiful from the outside, being built of brown Duston Stone, & it is locally known as the Pork Pie Church. We were told the very interesting history of th URC & how many of the first Congregationalists were persecuted for their beliefs. They did not like the flamboyance of the Anglican churches and preferred a more simple style of worship. The inside of the church is light & modern, built in 1874 at a cost of £12,000. It has a lively congregation, can seat 800 people, & is used constantly. Our next church is on Wednesday 19th February at 2.0pm to WESTON BY WELLAND. On 19th March it will be BRAMPTON ASH. ADVANCE NOTICE On April 16th we can visit the Hindhu Mandir in Mill Rd,Wellingborough, but they only take groups in the evening at 6.30pm. It would be a presentation followed by tea & snacks. Can you let me know if you are able to come please? The donation will be £3. Contact: Janet Clements 01536 507721 or
Musical Circles 1— At our last meeting we enjoyed music by Schumann, his Piano Concerto in A Major; Grieg's Sarabande from his Holbein Suite; Rossini's Overture to the Silken Ladder. Then we heard music from more modern composers; John Williams' Theme music from the film Schindler's List; Alfven's Swedish Rhapsody; Bates' Scotch on the Rocks; & finally a Venezuelan Suite 2000 played on the mandolin& guitar. Further Details from Carole Bradbury 01536516587
Musical Circles 2 — Due to hospital visits and illness the January meeting had to be cancelled so the programme will be heard in February. Contact: Eileen Mason 01536 725925
Playreading —"Bells of Hell" by John Mortimer was our play for January. It was a somewhat irreverent comedy concerning an impecunious vicar and his wife and their new curate who has a rather different approach to religion to theirs. Things come to a head when the bishop comes to visit and they are wondering how to feed him as there is no food in the house. Suddenly they are startled to discover that their freezer is full of fish and bread. Was it a miracle? It certainly kept us all guessing and was thoroughly good entertainment. Dates for members for February are 13th and 27th Contact Carole Bradbury 01536 516587 Watercolour Painting Class New Members Whether you have painted before or are a complete beginner we will welcome you to our friendly class, so please get in touch with Barbara on (01536) 523259, or Jo on (01933) 224474. Parking will be free in the church grounds but ask Barbara for a permit for your car window. Please come along and enjoy an afternoon watching Claire Warner paint. This should be a most enjoyable time whether you have any knowledge of painting or not. We need your support to make this a success. Tickets are £7.50 including tea and biscuits and are on sale on the Water Colour Painting table today, or ring Barbara or Jo (telephone nos. above).

Photography Group — For our February meeting our intrepid photographers braved the cold and the mud to photograph the viaduct at Harringworth. The flooded fields gave us the chance to incorporate reflections of the viaduct into our images. This produced pictures a little different from those usually seen of this famous landmark.
Playford English Country Dancing - We continue to enjoy our meetings on the 2nd & 4th Weds. at St. Andrews Church Hall from 2.30- 4p.m. More members would be very welcome. No need to bring a partner. Contact: Jean Beaver 01933 224474
We visited the church, and the very photogenic font gave us another subject to consider. We had hoped to visit the local pub for coffee, but unfortunately it was closed, so we finished a little earlier than normal – not such a bad thing as the temperature was starting to drop.
Poker Group —
We noticed the snowdrops in the churchyard, and this turned our thoughts to spring flowers as an aim for our March meeting, so if the weather is not too inclement we shall be on the lookout for snowdrops, daffodils and whatever else is out at that time. The meeting will be on Monday 3rd. March at 2.00pm, but the venue is to be decided. Watch out for the e-mails nearer the time. Anyone wishing to join us to photograph the spring flowers will need to contact me. As always, if the weather is bad we shall meet indoors, to look at our efforts and perhaps learn a bit more about the technical side of taking and processing images.

Spanish Conversation— The Spanish conversation group (I have changed the name from ‘Basic Spanish’ because this group is no longer suitable for absolute beginners) continues to meet on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We meet at various members’ houses so there is no charge. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second level students. We are now at full capacity. However, we would be happy to start a waiting list but because of the level our members are at, new students would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic Spanish. We are delighted to have been able to accept two new students recently but this was only possible because they already had an understanding of basic Spanish.

Night-time thoughts Sorrows, which come and quickly go in the bright light of day, come slowly at their worst, in the darkness of night. When they come not singly but in their battalions, and all to dark and all too deep. With head on pillow and ready for sleep you wake, and on they walk, these characters with worry in bags on their backs. They drag your sleepy head away to look at clips and listen to conversations until dawn.
Walking Group - The March walk on Wednesday the 3rd will start from the Kings Arms Wadenhoe and takes us through woods round Lyveden New Bield and back to the pub (approx 6 miles). Meet at10.00am, the pub will be open for toilet facilities and pre-orders for lunch
They march your brain through each and every overblown scenario, where every deadly worry demands a look. Things you don’t want to see and conversations not to have, until the facts become fruitless fiction. The summer nights, kinder and shorter with the earlier sun, are unlike January’s lengthy and freezing darkness. Where each hour lasts another half and the chilly kitchen floor is hard to walk on in tip-toe bare feet.

Writers Group —
So up you get to batter off the thoughts, and wrap yourself in fluffy dressing gowns and strong hot steaming tea. But the demons follow you down the stairs and stand around you as the kettle boils.
Are you someone with an urge to write? Someone with an idea for a story, a poem, an article, an essay, even a play that you've been dying to get down on paper, but have never got round to it? Or have you something that you've already written and would like to share! Why not come along to our friendly group? All you need is a love of words and a sense of humour; you'll find lots of positive encouragement and advice as well as a cuppa. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month from 1.45pm to 3.45pm in the Parish Rooms in Kettering: next meeting February 4th. For those who like a suggestion to work to - or ignore - the topic is A cello is an unusual murder weapon For more information or ideas contact Mary Wildman 01536 741222 or marywildman@uwclub.net —
Middle of the night telly for distraction – but on soft, so not to disturb the good sleepers – but then cannot be heard. So watching the OU too quietly teaches you nothing and no longer protects. In the quiet the people spill out their worry bags once more,
