MESSAGE

FROM THE

PRESIDENT

This past year was a landmark one for the University of Regina because we launched a new strategic plan. Entitled peyak aski kikawinaw, which in the Cree language means “We are one with Mother Earth,” this strategic plan is centred on the idea that “Together, we are stronger.” peyak aski kikawinaw has three main areas of priority: Student Success, Research Impact, and Commitment to Our Communities. In addition, it has two overarching themes – Indigenization and Sustainability – that will be central to our academic mission in the years to come. As donors, you have made meaningful contributions to the University of Regina, and in doing so, you are helping us realize the objectives of our new strategic plan for the benefit of students and communities in Saskatchewan, across Canada, and around the world. As the University of Regina moves into the next phase of its development – with record enrolments, exciting new programs, and a strong vision for the future – we will continue working with our donors to educate our future leaders. The renewal of our historic College Avenue campus will remain a priority as we expand our outreach in the wider community. Developing new scholarships and bursaries will be critical as we work to make a University of Regina education accessible to everyone, including Canada’s Aboriginal students who have traditionally been underserved in our country’s education system. And we will do our utmost to ensure that we continue to have affordable tuition, relevant programs, and world-class facilities for our students. As a supporter of the University of Regina, you understand that “Together, we are stronger.” Thank you for belief in the University of Regina and our students.

Dr. Vianne Timmons President and Vice-Chancellor

STUDENT SUCCESS

YOUR GIFTS HAVE IMPACT. You help our students make the most of their passion and potential.

Eric Holloway FACULTY OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION – PAUL J. HILL SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Recipient of the John Middleton & Jack Middleton Scholarship

“ Scholarships remind me that my efforts at school are valued. Donors invested in my future and from that I feel a responsibility to excel at my studies. Thanks for the support – it makes it easier to be the best student I can be!”

Katherine Sveinson FACULTY OF KINESIOLOGY AND HEALTH STUDIES Recipient of the Dr. Sandra Schmirler Scholarship

“ University can be an extremely stressful time and scholarships relieve some of that stress. I’m planning to complete my PhD in four years and continue my career in academics as a university professor. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to accomplish my goals and the confidence to pursue a career that I’m truly passionate about.”

Sasha-Gay Lobban FACULTY OF ARTS – SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM Recipient of the FGSR Graduate Studies Scholarship

“ Journalism has been a passion of mine since my teen years. To come from Jamaica to one of the best journalism schools in Canada has been a great experience. I have also been fortunate enough to have received scholarships while attending the U of R. If I were still in Jamaica I would not have had the resources to complete my Master of Journalism. I am thankful for the opportunity that the U of R and the J-school has provided.”

Evan Wellman FACULTY OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION – PAUL J. HILL SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Recipient of the CIC Aboriginal Bursary

“ Receiving a bursary helps ease the financial burden of attending university and allows me to focus more of my effort on studying and ensuring I get good grades rather than worrying about how I will find money for gas or food during the semester. This in turn will help me find a great job, make me more successful in my chosen career and allow me to give back to my community just as the donors did. The two words I cannot say enough are: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT

Lindsay Stuart B.Ed.’09; M.Ed.’15 GRADUATE OF THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION KINDERGARTEN TEACHER WITH REGINA PUBLIC SCHOOLS 2016 Winner of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in Early Childhood Education Recipient of the Helen Marguerite Fuller Prize for Teaching

“ The awards that I received motivated me to strive for excellence. They were both recognition and validation of all my hard work. Being able to focus on learning instead of earning had huge impact on my success. The recognition that student awards provided bolstered my motivation and today I am a kindergarten teacher and I have just started my eighth year of teaching with the Regina Public Schools. First and foremost, I would like to say thank you for the financial assistance that made it easier for me to complete my education.”

Creeson Agecoutay BAJ ‘10 GRADUATE OF THE FACULTY OF ARTS – SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM HOST, PRODUCER FOR CTV REGINA’S INDIGENOUS CIRCLE, VIDEO JOURNALIST FOR CTV REGINA Recipient of the CIC Aboriginal Bursary

“ I was a student that moved from Cowessess First Nation to the city. Going from living with my mom to living in the city alone was quite an adjustment. I was a full-time student working a part-time job, and there were many times I would just barely get by. Receiving a bursary gave me comfort to know that I had the finances to get to the next month and it allowed me to focus on my studies, rather than worrying about the stresses of bills and rent. This support provided the extra incentive to strive towards excellence and make the most of the opportunity that a university education provides. Today, I am the host and producer for CTV’s award-winning weekly program, Indigenous Circle and a video journalist for CTV Regina. To the donors, thank you for the much-needed financial help.”

YOUR GIFTS BUILD COMMUNITY.

Darke Hall upgrades preserve an arts “gem”. Over 100 years ago, the foundation was laid for the University of Regina at the College Avenue Campus (CAC). Today, it’s a hub of activity – home to the Centre for Continuing Education, the Conservatory of Performing Arts, Darke Hall, the JohnsonShoyama Graduate School of Public Policy and the Lifelong Learning Centre. More than 8,000 learners, ranging from six months to 97 years of age, use the CAC annually. The College Avenue Campus Renewal Project remains the University’s highest priority capital fundraising project. Since 2011, the renewal project has raised more than $7 million toward a $10 million goal to transform the historic campus into a vibrant, accessible, and sustainable centre of learning and arts. Darke Hall has been a destination for art lovers since its doors opened in 1929, and remains a gem within our city today.

Upgrading Darke Hall is a cornerstone of the renewal project; community support for it has been outstanding. Funded by the generosity of University friends and supporters, $3 million has already been allocated to upgrades at Darke Hall and this work has begun. This phase of construction will repair some of the slate tiles on the roof, enable brick and stone repair, window refurbishment, front step rebuilding, and allow for hand rail placement. The changes will update and preserve the building’s exterior, allowing us to focus on interior renovations in the future. The response of donors like you has put this project in motion. Together we’ll restore Regina’s historic downtown campus so it can continue to serve as an economic, educational and cultural destination within our province.

“ The support of the community is vital to helping us achieve this vision and ensuring the campus plays a pivotal role in the future of the University, city and province.” Dr. Vianne Timmons U niversity of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor

YOUR GIFTS INNOVATE.

$1 million anonymous donation supports brain research. An advance in any field requires concentrated research and development, and the generosity of our donors allows our best to focus their best on finding breakthroughs. This was certainly the case in November, 2015, when an anonymous donor gifted $1 million to support several brain health-related projects. “The generous support of this philanthropist combined with the significant impact these research projects will have in building our knowledge of brain health and improving treatment processes to address debilitating brain injuries and diseases, is far-reaching,” says University of Regina President and ViceChancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons. The $1 million gift includes: • $300,000 for the Exploration of neurogenesis, neuroplasticity and their impact – Holly Bardutz, Dr. Paul Schwann Applied Health and Fitness Centre, Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies. The research will examine the impact of exercise, which is known to stimulate neurogenesis, on brain function and quality of life in older adults.

(L-R) Dr. Lei Zhang, Dr. Kim Dorsch, Dr. Thomas Hadjistravropoulus and Holly Bardutz

• $250,000 for the Unit for Innovation in Dementia Care – Dr. Thomas Hadjistravropoulos, Research Chair in Aging and Health. The unit’s work focuses on developing improved pain management approaches for dementia sufferers, as well as implementing cutting-edge pain assessment/management methodologies and protocols. • $225,000 for the Study of attention using multiple object tracking – Dr. Kim Dorsch, Sports Psychology Laboratory. The studies will improve performance in people with attention deficits due to injury or disease, as well as in healthy individuals. • $225,000 for the Non-invasive stimulation of the brain to treat neurological diseases – Dr. Lei Zhang, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Electronic Systems Engineering. Funds will focus on exploring electronic brain stimulation as a non-invasive method to treat chronic pain, depression and Parkinson’s. The insights and findings from this research could help improve the lives of people around the world. Research makes innovation possible and research is possible because of your generosity.

YOUR GIFTS LEAVE A LEGACY.

John Davies’ legacy gift ensures the music will play on in his partner’s name. Music was always a part of John and Jack’s life. Partners for forty-six years, John Davies and Jack Partridge travelled extensively to pursue their passion, including trips to New York to take in the opera. The love of music ran especially deep in Jack, and he dedicated his life to performing and teaching others. “Jack was an influential and devoted musician and educator in Regina, the province and throughout Canada,” says John. On Jack’s passing, John honoured his partner’s

dedication to music by establishing the Jack Partridge Music Scholarship at the University of Regina. But John did not stop there. To ensure that the Jack Partridge Music Scholarship continues in perpetuity, John, an educator himself has left a gift in his will. This gives John great pleasure to know that their love of education and music will forever live on.

“ Jack made music and the education of others his life. He influenced many students to further their education in music and fine arts. The scholarship continues that influence and provides a lasting legacy.” John Davies
