University Pages.....................................55-56

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been an autonomous member of the University of Alabama system since 1969, and has been an intercollegiate athletic program since 1977. UAB is sometimes confused with the University of Alabama (Crimson Tide), which is located in Tuscaloosa; while this is inevitable, it is important to note that the two are indeed separate institutions. In addition, the UAB name is often altered by various media, opponents, merchandisers, etc. Please note that there are only two correct versions of our name, the acronym “UAB,” or the full “University of Alabama at Birmingham.” In addition the Associated Press sports stylebook now uses UAB on first reference, not Alabama-Birmingham. We are:

UAB

University of Alabama at Birmingham We are not: Alabama-Birmingham, Ala.-Birmingham, or U.A.B.

2014 WOMEN’S SOCCER

West Campus Field

One of the most imposing home fields in all of college soccer, UAB’s West Campus Field has served as the home of the Blazer men’s soccer team since 1993 and the women’s soccer team since its inaugural season in 1996. Prior to the 1998 season, the facility received several improvements, including stadium seating. The permanent seating -- which holds 1,500 spectators -- pushed the maximum capacity of West Campus Field to more than 2,500. The facility was expanded in 1999 to include a practice field behind the game surface. This, along with other major structural improvements, has given UAB one of the best overall soccer facilities in Conference USA. West Campus Field has seen championship play as UAB hosted NCAA tournament matches in 1999, 2006 and 2011. The Blazers also hosted the 1999 and 2007 Conference USA Championships and the 1994 Great Midwest Conference Championship. Additionally, the men’s C-USA Championship returns to West Campus Field in 2012.

scrimmage the full National Team. The Blazers took on the U.S. U-17 squad in an exhibition match in 2004 as well, while the UAB women’s team has previously hosted the Mexico U-20 team in exhibition play. West Campus Field was also the sight for the U.S. National Team’s training for their 2005 World Cup Qualifier against Guatemala. The UAB men’s team also hosted the Colorado Rapids in an exhibition game in the spring of 2005. Additionally, the Blazers have been one of the top draws in NCAA men’s soccer. A stadium-record 3,481 fans packed the facility for an exhibition contest against Clemson on Aug. 22, 2009, while a regular-season record 3,141 fans witnessed a regular-season contest against Clemson on Aug. 27, 2011. The UAB women’s team finished 10th in the NCAA in average home attendance in its first season of competition in 1996.

The field has also received international attention as the United States Men’s National Team trained at WCF and took on the Blazer men’s soccer team in a scrimmage in the spring of 2000. UAB became the first ever-collegiate program to U A B

Following a turnaround season in 2013, the UAB women’s soccer team looks to keep its success from a year ago rolling in 2014. Head coach Harold Warren, in his fourth season at the helm of the Blazers, leads a group of four seniors and four all-conference selections, plus 12 freshmen on this year’s sqaud. After UAB won a combined eight matches in 2011 and 2012, the Green and Gold rebounded for an 11-win season in 2013, the first since the 2009 season and also the first Conference USA Tournament appearance since that season. The Seniors: UAB’s 2014 senior class has accounted for more than 15 goals in the last three seasons. Johanna Liney, Mary Catherine Combs, Megan Collins and Kelsey Waechter all were a part of the turnaround season in 2013 and made their first appearance in the Conference USA tournament as juniors. Liney returns as UAB’s top offensive player with 12 goals and six assists heading into the 2014 season. She led the team in goals, assists and points in 2012 and was also named to the All-Conference USA Third Team that season. Defender Mary Catherine Combs has started in 52 games entering her senior season and played in 53 going into 2014. She has one goal in her career and has started in at least 16 games each year at UAB. Midfielder Megan Collins enters the 2014 campaign with 17 starts under her belt and four total assists. She has appeared in at least 16 games each year while at UAB and looks to be an offensive threat entering this season. U A B

Midfielder Kelsey Waechter, after transferring from USF after the 2010 season, has started in 32 games heading into the 2014 season. She picked up 19 starts as a junior and played in all 20 matches for the Blazers. The Juniors: UAB’s junior class is made up of Ashley Naumoff, Alanna Dineen, Paige Hanks and Angelica Jimenez. Those four juniors account for 12 goals leading up to the 2014 season, and also include UAB’s returning goalkeeper in Angelica Jimenez. Defender Ashley Naumoff has 18 collegiate starts entering her junior campaign and has two goals and two assists in her Blazer career. Last season she appeared in 19 games at defender and started in 16. She was a member of the UAB back line that recorded three shutouts on the season. Midfielder Alanna Dineen enters 2014 having played in just two contests, both matches in which she appeared in as a freshman. Midfielder Paige Hanks enters 2014 with 34 starts in 36 games. She was named to the All-Conference USA Third Team in 2013 after tying for the team lead in goals with six and also finished with a team high three assists. She has 10 goals and five assists in her UAB career and looks to be one of UAB’s main offensive threats heading into 2014. Goalkeeper Angelica Jimenez returns as the starter in goal for UAB in 2014. She has totaled 48 saves and carries a .696 winning percentage entering her junior campaign.

2014 WOMEN’S SOCCER

2014 Season Preview The Sophomores: Eight sophomores return for UAB’s 2014 season, led by Kimberly Fincher, Morgan Key-Adams and Kasey Johnson.

The Schedule: Four participants from the 2013 NCAA Tournament highlight UAB women’s soccer’s 2014 schedule.

Forward Kim Fincher was named to the All-Conference USA Freshman Team following the 2013 season. She started in 17 of UAB’s 20 matches and totaled five goals and two assists with a team-leading 32 shots.

The Blazers will face South Alabama, Duke, Jacksonville and Illinois – all NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago – within the first five matches of the fall.

“Kelly Britt, now when I say everybody else has worked hard, Kelly Britt had an amazing offseason. She came back challenging Caitlin Attfield as far as speed, and is going to be our starting center fielder. She’s coming from an infield position, and has learned the outfield and bought in. She came in and had several pinch-hitting opportunities last year, and came through regardless of what pitching level she faced, and it is exciting what she’s going to be able to do when she gets more live reps under her. She’s going to surprise a lot of people.” “Ashley Johnson is in competition for our starting catcher role. She is someone that we’re really calling on to produce at the plate, but as well as be a vocal leader behind the plate.” Like Fincher, Key-Adams also earned All-Freshman team honors following her freshman campaign. She started in 14 of the 18 matches she played in and picked up one goal and one assist. The midfielder looks to be another big offensive threat for the Blazers in 2014. Forward Kasey Johnson returns as UAB’s leading goal scorer from last season. She finished with six goals on the year which tied for the team lead and had two assists.

UAB will play six home matches at West Campus Field, with the first set for Sept. 19 against Chattanooga. Conference USA members UTSA, UTEP, FIU, Florida Atlantic and Rice will also make trips to Birmingham to round out the Blazers’ home slate. The season begins on Aug. 22 when UAB travels to South Alabama, before hitting the road a week later to North Carolina to face Davidson (Aug. 29) and Duke (Aug. 31), an NCAA Quarterfinal team in 2013. UAB opens the month of September with play at the College of Charleston Tournament (Sept. 5-7), where the Blazers will face Jacksonville and Illinois. The other two remaining non-conference contests include two in-state matchups, both on the road, against Alabama (Sept. 12) and Troy (Sept. 14). The Green and Gold will play five league contests away from home, including the first on Oct. 3 at Southern Miss, before traveling a state over to Louisiana to face Louisiana Tech on Oct. 5. Following a twogame home tilt, UAB will then round out its road slate with matches at Marshall (Oct. 17), Western Kentucky (Oct. 19) and Middle Tennessee (Oct. 26).

Midfielder Skylar Olson played in seven contests for UAB in 2013. Midfielder Sarah Morris returns with 12 collegiate matches under her belt and took four shots for two on goal as a freshman. Forward Sharon Osterbind played in four matches as a freshman last year. She recorded the first goal of her career, one of six in UAB’s 6-2 win over Troy. Defender Alexandra Lee started in one contest and played in two as a freshman, while Ann Schmidt enters 2014 after sitting out as a freshman. The Freshmen: The Blazers welcome one of the biggest freshmen classes ever in 2014, including 12 newcomers. Four hail from the state of Georgia, one from Oklahoma, two from Texas, three from Ohio, one from Illinois and one from Alabama. Head coach Harold Warren brought in a huge class of defenders as six of the newcomers are back line players. Four are midfielders and two goalkeepers join the Blazers for the 2014 season.

Coaching Staff

Harold Warren Head Coach • Fourth Season Cal Poly Pomona • 2002 Harold Warren, a member of the 2007 national championship coaching staff at USC, was named head coach of the UAB women’s soccer program on December 29, 2010. Warren took over a UAB program that had been guided for 15 years by Paul Harbin, who retired following the 2010 season. After leading the Blazers to an 8-29-1 record in his first two seasons on campus, Warren completed a turnaround season in 2013 as he led UAB to an 11-7-2 record. It marked just the seventh season in which the Green and Gold reached 11 wins, dating back to the inaugural season in 1996. 2014 WOMEN’S SOCCER

Coaching Staff

Rebecca Whittle Assistant Coach Sixth Season

Garrett Linquist Assistant Coach First Season

Rebecca Whittle was named assistant coach for the UAB women’s soccer program in July 2009. Whittle comes with four years of prior college coaching experience and a wealth of playing experience.

Garrett Linquist joined the UAB women’s soccer program in the spring of 2014 as an assistant coach under head coach Harold Warren.

Whittle returns to the collegiate women’s soccer scene after teaching in the Homewood (Ala.) school system since the fall of 2006. She has worked as a pre-algebra and algebra teacher for both seventh and eighth grade.

Linquist joins the UAB staff after a two-year stint at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. During his debut season in Huntsville in 2012, the Lady Chargers recorded 10 wins including the program’s first-ever victory at the Gulf South Conference Women’s Soccer Championships. UAH featured six all-conference selections, a Freshman of the Year selection and four players who earned all-region status. The Chargers totaled a 5-10-5 record in 2013 in Linquist’s final season with UAH.

Whittle’s most-recent coaching stint was at Georgia Southern, where she spent two years (2004-06) with head coach and former UAB women’s soccer assistant Ashley Hart. Some of her duties included recruiting, onfield coaching, scouting reports, player management and administrative responsibilities. Prior to Georgia Southern, Whittle was an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech for two seasons with head coaches Greg Stone (2002) and Patrick Farmer (2003), where she performed many duties, including recruiting, scouting reports, player management and compliance. In addition, Whittle has worked numerous collegiate camps, including UAB, Samford, Georgia Southern, Tennessee Tech, Duke, Rice and Lee University. She has also been a coach with the Vestavia Hills Soccer Club off-and-on since 2000. Whittle was a four-year letterwinner at Samford, playing for head coach Barry Spitzer from 1997-2000. The Dallas, Texas native played in 71 games, starting 65 contests at forward for the Bulldogs. She scored 16 goals and recorded 15 assists for a total of 43 points during her career. Whittle graduated from Samford in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in education and received her Master’s degree in education psychology and counselor education from Tennessee Tech in 2004.

Prior to his two-year stint with the Chargers, Linquist served as an assistant for two seasons at St. Stephen’s High School in Hickory, N.C. Additionally, he served as a coach with the Catawba Valley Youth Soccer Association in Hickory and worked with the U-14 and U-16 boys teams. Other experience for Linquist includes working with UAH Head Coach Jimmy Mitchell at his Elite Soccer Academy camps in Louisiana, Alabama and North Carolina, and he holds a National D Coaching License from the USSF. Linquist graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University in May 2012 with a degree in accounting.

The former Rebecca Kent is married to Luke Whittle, who is the Director of Coaching for the Vestavia Hills Soccer Club. Many men’s soccer players coached by Luke Whittle in the Vestavia Hills Soccer Club have gone on to play at UAB. They have a son, Noah, who was born in November 2009.

SINCE BECOMING an autonomous campus of The University of Alabama System in 1969, UAB has earned international renown for its innovative academic programs in a range of disciplines, groundbreaking research and leading-edge patient care. The University comprises 10 schools (Business, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry and Public Health and a College of Arts and Sciences) and has seen record enrollment for five consecutive years, reaching 18,568 in 2013. Students are 26% African-American, 60% female and represent more than 100 countries, contributing to campus consistently recognized among the nation’s most diverse in The Princeton Review.

Academic programs at all levels are nationally recognized for their exceptional research and service learning opportunities. Undergraduate programs offer the type of hands-on, closely mentored research experiences found primarily at the graduate level in most universities, such as Alabama’s only undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, a program in the neurosciences conducted jointly with the School of Medicine, and new majors in Biomedical Sciences, Public Health and Informatics. U.S. News & World Report 2015 “Best Graduate Schools” lists 12 UAB programs in the top 25 and The Scientist “Best Places to Work as a Postdoc” ranks UAB first among all U.S. universities. Driven by an intensely collaborative and entrepreneurial character, UAB’s robust research enterprise ranks 23rd in funding from National Institutes of Health (11th among public universities), with more than $454 million in external funding. This wide-ranging research spans the continents in scope: Developing revolutionary treatments for the most devastating human diseases, from cancer to AIDS to Parkinson’s; using satellite remote sensing to reveal lost settlements in Egypt and the Roman Empire (as featured on BBC and Discovery Channel); pioneering new materials for everything from stronger military gear to bio-coatings for cardiac stents; and combating global cybercrime in a one-of-a-kind cyber forensics center, collaborating with the FBI, Homeland Security and industry partners.

UAB drives the region’s economy with a statewide impact exceeding $5 billion annually. As Alabama’s largest single employer (over 23,000 employees), UAB supports more than 61,000 jobs state-wide—one of every 33 Alabama jobs. The Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship has generated some $64 million in revenues and spun off more than 58 start-up companies, and Innovation Depot—in which UAB is a founding partner—is the largest business incubator in the Southeast, with 95 companies and a $1 billion economic impact over the past four years. As a leading academic medical center, UAB also translates its research into the highest quality patient care, treating more than a million patients annually. UAB Hospital (with 1,157 beds), the largest in Alabama and 3rd largest public hospital in the U.S., houses the state’s only level 1 adult trauma center, and is the only Alabama hospital to be listed in every annual issue of U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Hospitals” (24 straight years). The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated center in Alabama and a six-state region, and houses a state-of-the-art Advanced Imaging Facility and the most powerful cyclotron at any U.S. academic medical center. UAB also promotes the cultural and artistic vitality of its community and state. The Alys Stephens Center for the Performing Arts had total attendance of more than 104,000 in 2013 and is the anchor of a burgeoning Cultural Arts Corridor, which was recently expanded with the opening of the Abroms-Engel Institute for Visual Arts.

UAB’S DECADES-LONG PARTNERSHIP with its community and state has led to the economic, cultural and social renaissance of Birmingham, as the city has grown from a primarily steel-based economy to a thriving nexus of R&D, medicine, banking and other service industries. That partnership continues as UAB garners overwhelming support for its largest philanthropic campaign ever, the $1 billion Campaign for UAB: Give Something, Change Everything. As of March 2014, nearly 71,000 donors had given $473.4 million to this campaign that will dramatically advance UAB’s mission and transform the future of Birmingham and Alabama.
