The title of our season, The Discovery Series, refers not only to the discoveries you will make as you follow us through the year, but to those precious moments when we, as artists, let instinct take over. Almost “in the blink of an eye,” as the saying goes, we discover some artistic pathway that leads us to a place we hadn’t imagined before ….

The UA Dance Ensemble is uniquely positioned to take you along on that journey. The Discovery Series is powered by 140 dancers, many of whom are returning professionals, all trained in ballet, modern, jazz and tap. By performing all styles, the Ensemble can reach back to the past, reveal the present, and with you as our audience take part in discovering the future. Propelled by the work of internationally known faculty and guest artists, the UA Dance Ensemble has made twelve trips to eight different countries, including Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Scotland, China, Japan, Ecuador, and Mexico. Additional performances at important venues in this country, including the Joyce Theatre in NYC and the Kennedy Center in D.C. , have shaped the UA Dance Ensemble into a group of seasoned performers.

S travins k y ! M usic + F estiva l University of Arizona, October 12-14, 2012 This year’s festival, directed by composer Daniel Asia, will feature the work of Igor Stravinsky, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the premiere of The Rite of Spring. Stravinsky, a major force in music in the first half of the 20th Century, set the agenda for the latter half as well, and this festival will look at the output of his entire career. Performances will take place in the School of Music’s Holsclaw Hall and Crowder Hall, as well as on October 14th in the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre, where the School of Dance and School of Music will collaborate on several of Stravinsky’s works, including The Soldier’s Tale and his powerful Serenade in A for piano. Other highlights of the festival include performances of Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, Petrouchka, Ragtime, the Ebony Concerto (forays into the jazz world), and a film screening at the historic Fox Theatre. A R I Z O N A J A Z Z D A N C E S H O W C A S E October 2 - 4, 2012 AZ Jazz Dance Showcase will bring back to the stage, among other works, CHICAGO Suite, Paper or Plastic, and ITZacoolHot. These pieces, seen during our spring season last year, will anchor an evening of jazz, tap and musical theatre. The “Fosseesque” CHICAGO Suite is a work especially created for the UA Dance Ensemble using four numbers from the 1996 Tony Award winning musical revival of CHICAGO. Ann Reinking along with Gary Chryst set the work on UA Dance last January. Sam Watson’s fanciful Paper or Plastic uses a set made with items retrieved from the streets, alleys, vacant lots, trees and cacti of Tucson. The set is woven together with “Plarn” – a term used to describe plastic yarn made from plastic shopping bags. And finally, Michael William’s new work, ITZacoolHot, offered during Spring Collection, 2012, will go again as part of this Jazz Showcase. While not part of the regular season subscription, you will enjoy a “second look” at these repeats, and so we hope you will join us at Eller Dance Theatre for performances running October 2-4. SEASONAL TREASURES Your first “discovery� in the Discovery Series will be this concert -- Seasonal Treasures. As many of you have already discovered, the work of our student choreographers is fresh, engaging, and sometimes edgy, but always danced with an esprit de corps that only the UA Dance Ensemble can offer. In this concert, the students team up with faculty choreographers to create a treasure trove. In addition to student choreography, for example, faculty member Amy Ernst (an audience favorite during her career as a dancer with Bella Lewitzky) is planning a solo for a member of the UA Dance Ensemble. And, Seasonal Treasures will offer a premier called UNTITLED (Fill In The Blank). This new work will be a collaboration between Douglas Nielsen (School of Dance) and Kyle Maxwell-Doherty (School of Music) in honor of the 100th birthday of American Composer John Cage (1912-1992) and the rich collaboration with choreographer and life partner Merce Cunningham (1919-2009).

Perhaps one of the most prominent and encompassing fascinations to both Cage and Cunningham was the element of chance. UNTITLED (Fill In The Blank) will investigate the chance element by having an audience member decide the sequence of the music and the choreography every night before the dance is

The award winning ballet, Jewels, choreographed by George Balanchine has been called the first full-length abstract ballet Balanchine created. It premiered in 1967 by the New York City Ballet. For this three-part ballet, Balanchine used as his inspiration three different composers and the artistry of jewelry designer Claude Arpels. Rubies, the middle section (between Emeralds and Diamonds) is a clever and lighthearted romp, reminiscent of other collaborations between Igor Stravinsky and Balanchine. Set to Stravinsky’s Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, this 19 minute piece for 15 dancers has become popular as a stand-alone ballet. Amy Ernst’s poetic work for eight women, entitled Songs of Sanctuary, will return to celebrate its 10th anniversary since being invited to the American College Dance Festival’s national gala. RATS !! by Douglas Nielsen, with vocals by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. will be presented on this program as well. Added to the male cast that exemplifies the infamous ‘Rat Pack’ will be the presence of women, as Shirley McLaine, Anne Margaret, and Liza Minnelli were considered essential to the entourage of that time. Along with robust choreography, gestures based on ASL (American Sign Language) are incorporated into this dance. James Clouser’s new ballet Beachers, to be danced to the music of Dimitri Shostakovitch, presents a series of scenes that take place at the seashore and features flirtatious flappers, health enthusiasts, those who sun but never swim, a squall, and a mirage revealing a dalliance between Venus and Neptune. Michael Williams plans a new work set to a vibrant score in the contemporary musical genre of Nu Jazz. With orchestration ranging from traditional to experimental, the melodies of Nu Jazz are fresh, and its rhythms new and alive. Finally, Sam Watson will bring back, by popular demand, his zany satire called Hi-Jinx.

In The Discovery Series, we uncover the past but also reveal the future. A new era is about to begin, as the next generation of dance artists breaks from our stage and fans out across the country. The work of our young choreographers and dancers has been seen nationally and internationally, and is sure to leave a mark on you now and in the future. Rainbow Bound - Student Spotlight will give you a glimpse into a not too distant world where our dancers take part in discoveries yet to be made... SPRING C O LL E C T I O N April 19 - April 28
Choreographer Elizabeth George (her recent works include Arizona Highway and The Passenger) is planning a new work for this concert, and with your season subscription you will see its premiere! Also premiering is a work by Douglas Nielsen called Take Off Your Shoes. Inspired by the lyrics of Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainwright, and Randy Newman, this suite of dances will play between the notes and words of these famously infamous song writers who knowingly remind us of the politics of living. A third premiere (for UA Dance) is by guest choreographer Michael Tevlin, who over the past 35 years has served as a director and choreographer for several ballet companies and is currently a faculty member with the University of Cincinnati. Under the auspices of a NEA Choreography Fellowship, his piece And Ye Shall Be as Gods …. was created in 1978. A ballet in three sections, it depicts the story of Adam and Eve; Eve’s encounter with the serpent; and their fall from grace and banishment from Eden. Danced to Igor Stravinsky’s Serenade in A for piano, the ballet was the subject of a PBS special featuring Melissa Lowe and Jory Hancock.
