This year the UA Dance Ensemble celebrates 10 years of performing in the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre. Blessed by the completion of this theatre in 2003, wave after wave of dance majors rehearse and perform in this award winning, state-of-the-art facility. The 29,000 square foot complex, which houses a 300-seat theatre with spacious stage, is host to some 40 to 50 performances a year by UA Dance. Lead architects on the project, Donna Barry and Jose Pombo created more than a decade ago a design so innovative that several awards recognized their work. Two AIA awards and a Best Public Project over $5M award led ultimately to the building being added as one of only fifteen on the list of “Arizona’s Greatest Architectural Wonders.” The Stevie Eller Dance Theatre is but one of the “discoveries” you will make if you join us for the year. Another discovery will be a dance ensemble that is uniquely positioned to take you on an amazing journey. Powered by 140 dancers, all trained in ballet, modern and jazz, our Discovery Series II will reach back to the past, reveal the present, and with you as our audience take part in discovering the future. The UA Dance Ensemble has made thirteen trips to eight different countries, and has performed in important venues in the country as well, including the Kennedy Center in D.C. and most recently the Joyce Theatre in NYC. But the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre is our home, and you are our audience, and we hope you will share with us those precious moments when we, as artists, let instinct take over. Almost “in the blink of an eye,” as the saying goes, we’ll discover together something we hadn’t imagined before…
-Jory Hancock, Director Stevie Eller Endowed Chair

REMIUM BLEND
P remium B lend , offered as part of the UApresents Dance Series, will feature one of George Balanchine’s best known pas de deux’s, his sizzling Tarantella (see opposite page), as well as the mesmerizing work of guest choreographer Larry Keigwin. In addition, the UA Dance Ensemble will team up with the Arizona Choir to perform selections from Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer. Featured choreography by UA Dance faculty will include works by James Clouser, Melissa Lowe, Douglas Nielsen, Michael Williams, and staging by Amy Ernst. Clouser and Lowe will collaborate to create the movement for Liebeslieder Walzer, performed to live piano and the powerful voice of the Arizona Choir, conducted by maestro Bruce Chamberlain. In Slipknots, Clouser continues his exploration of the classical idiom. Set to J. S. Bach’s Cello Suite #3, the dance unravels the elegant, knot-like puzzles that Bach has threaded throughout the music. Audiences will enjoy Duet Suite (2013), as Douglas Nielsen presents work that he choreographed and danced during his long career as a performer. The suite includes You Are Jeff, Wreck a Pair, and The Music of Regret.

TA R A N T E L L A — The tarantella, one of the best known Italian folk dances, stemmed from the popular belief that a victim bitten by a tarantula needed to engage in a frenzied dance to avoid death. This superstition was the inspiration for master choreographer, George Balanchine, when he choreographed Tarantella for the New York City Ballet in 1964. He designed an explosive dance driven by the rollicking music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk to showcase the talents of dancers Edward Villella and Patricia McBride. In the decades since its premiere, it has continued to be performed by ballet virtuosi whose technical prowess can illustrate the verve and bravado required. DA N C E . A R I Z O N A . E D U Faculty and guest choreography featured in Three’s a Crowd includes the UA Dance premiere of Evolution of a Dream by guest Sherry Zunker, who created this piece in 2009 for River North Dance Chicago. An earlier version of this tempestuous work, titled Reality of a Dreamer (1992), had become a signature piece for River North and for its 20th anniversary Zunker re-imagined and expanded her original creation. Another work set originally on a professional company is James Clouser’s Three Trios, first presented by Houston Ballet. This piece, in which three is definitely a crowd, will be newly crafted to the music of Chick Corea. Billy Joel’s melancholy ballad from 1990, And So It Goes, provides the musical inspiration for Amy Ernst’s new choreography, a contemplative meditation on love for solo performer. Contemporary vocal artist Sara Gazarek’s honest and reflective interpretation of Joel’s timeless song anchors the piece. Finally, Melissa Lowe will stage Window in the Woods, a work that that she and Anne Bunker (founding artistic director of Tucson’s OTO Dance Company) co-created and danced in 1999. Projections of photos taken during their separate journeys through Scotland and Ireland lend a mystical backdrop where openings in the woods become “windows” to the world.

Those who knew and loved the dance numbers for the Carol Burnett Show would no doubt be happy to see, once again, the genius of choreographer Ernie Flatt. With an Emmy for his work with Burnett, Ernie Flatt was also nominated for two Tony Awards for Sugar Babies: as Best Choreographer and, with Rudy Tronto, Best Director (Musical). DA N C E . A R I Z O N A . E D U At center stage for UA Dance Spring Collection will be Sam Watson’s full length work called Tales and Rhymes. A project of some three years in the making, Tales and Rhymes brings to life the often dark folk tales made famous by the Brothers Grimm and the sometimes more lighthearted offerings from the Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes. As in all good tales, what seems hopelessly riddled with tragedy can sometimes turn cheerful, and what may seem outwardly innocent can have an ominous side that takes us into darkness. Sam Watson explores the opposing forces of good versus evil, often sprinkled with the presence of animal characters, magicians, an innocent maiden, a conniving witch ...From Little Red Riding Hood to Sleeping Beauty, this 45 minute work will illustrate through dance some of the best stories ever told. In support of the choreography will be video and projections created by Watson and media specialist Dan Howarth. Rounding out the program will be faculty works by Amy Ernst, James Clouser, Melissa Lowe and Michael Williams.
