UA DANCE 2015/2016 SEASON THE PRISM SERIES

TO OUR AUDIENCE Exactly 20 years ago, UA Dance moved from what had been “committee” status to a division in the School of Music and Dance. Ten years ago, Dance became its own School, having built a program of quality and its own state-of-the-art theatre. Now as one of the top dance programs in the country, and blessed by the completion of an award winning performance facility, wave after wave of dance majors have rehearsed and performed as members of the UA Dance Ensemble. The 29,000 square foot complex, which houses a 300-seat theatre with spacious stage, is host to some 40 to 50 performances a year by UA Dance. No longer a “committee,” we are instead a community -- students, staff and faculty in partnership with our invaluable arts patrons and supporters. As UA Dance, we enjoy the continuum with those who have made the journey with us, and like a prism that breaks white light into colors, we see more clearly now the full spectrum of UA Dance. As artists, we use dance as a vehicle to reach back to the past, reveal the present, and with you as our audience, take part in creating the future. The dream we have for our dancers is vibrant, and one we share with you. So please accept this as your invitation to dream...

PREMIUM BLEND October 30 - November 8 SINGLE TICKET PRICES Adult $33 Senior, Military $28 UA Employee $28 Student $15

Opening this year’s Premium Blend will be Elizabeth George’s ballet rendering of a rich Paganini score, followed by Tamara Dyke Compton’s modern exploration of the search for courage, performed to music from the Louisiana Bayou. Closing the first half is a contemporary ballet for all women by Melissa Lowe. Her Invisible Sun interprets a quote from Sir Thomas Browne: “Life is a pure flame and we live by an invisible sun within us.”

THE UNSUNG

is made possible through lead gifts from: Frank and Betsy Babb Stephen Golden and Susan Tarrence James and Joan Horwitz Anita Katz Dan Leach and the generous support of others.

As the centerpiece, and in homage to the American Indian, the UA Dance Ensemble presents José Limón’s stunning masterwork, The Unsung. Performed without musical accompaniment, The Unsung creates both its own environment and “score,” as the dancers create from the stage the rhythm and sounds of tribal culture. This work for eight men offers a solo for each of the dancers, as well as full ensemble sections, all suggesting aspects of American Indian lore. José Limón, a modern dance pioneer, was born in Mexico in 1908 and is internationally celebrated for his powerful and influential style. The Unsung has been performed around the world, and with staging by Colin Connor and rehearsal direction by Douglas Nielsen and Amy Ernst, the piece will be presented by UA Dance at the Joyce Theatre, NYC, October 24 and 25, 2015.

HERE & NOW - STUDENT SPOTLIGHT December 3 - December 6 SINGLE TICKET PRICES Adult $25 Senior, Military $23 UA Employee $23 Student $12

Let our students lift your spirits as we present an evening of choreography by the best and brightest of our 150 undergraduate and graduates. Here the dance faculty step aside and cheer with you as these young artists step into the spotlight with work that is newly created just for this moment. “Here and Now ….” refers to both the group of students moving towards graduation but who are still here, and to all young artists who -- with their bodies, minds and hearts -- continue to create art in spite of the many challenges they face. They dance because dance is what they are driven to do.

COLOR WHEEL FEBRUARY 24 - FEBRUARY 28 SINGLE TICKET PRICES Adult $33 Senior, Military $28 UA Employee $28 Student $15 Here we provide the variety our audiences have come to expect. Ballet, jazz, modern and ballroom complete the prism that is Color Wheel. In Rockin’ Chair, by Sam Watson, an old fashioned rocking chair is the site of new love as a young couple dance to a guitar score of Eric Bibb. In the short ballet Broadway Lights, by Melissa Lowe and Elizabeth George, the energy of Broadway is portrayed by a couple dancing to Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm.” Juxtaposing jazz music and ballet, James Clouser has made a dance to the live recording of “Exit Music for a Film” (Radiohead) made at the famed Village Vanguard by the Brad Mehldau Trio. And two works by Michael Williams are offered. A hat, a glove, a chair, a cane – ITZaJAZZthing! combines iconic jazz dance accessories with a score by jazz trumpet virtuoso, Wynton Marsalis, and Sent Here mixes contemporary and ballroom in a dance for two. In Antique Epigraphs, created by Jerome Robbins for NYC Ballet in 1984, “eight women dressed in gorgeous earth toned sheer over-dresses are Greek sculptures come to life. Two-dimensional shapes melt seamlessly into softly unaccented dancing as a chorus of seated women, like drawings on an antiquated vase, serves as a backdrop for idyllic solos.”* When Boston Ballet presented the work in 2011, that company became the first outside of New York City Ballet to perform Antique Epigraphs. Four years later, UA Dance is pleased to include Antique Epigraphs on its 2015-16 Season. Staging this favorite Robbins’ work is Helene Alexopoulos, a member of the original NYC Ballet cast, and serving as rehearsal director will be faculty member Melissa Lowe. *Ballet-Dance Magazine, Cecly Placenti

As part of the Ballet Masterworks Fund, Antique Epigraphs is made possible through lead gifts from: Judy and Jim Brown, Merrily and George Davis, Elayne and James Glasser, Mary Jo Ghory, Wesley Green, Sandy and Elliott Heiman, Lyn Papanikolas and J. David Mackstaller, Sara Naylor, Jean and Jordan Nerenberg, Linda and Ken Robin, Thom Sherwood and John Fikkan, Harriet Silverman and the generous support of others.

SPRING COLLECTION APRIL 22 - MAY 1 SINGLE TICKET PRICES Adult $31 Senior, Military $27 UA Employee $27 Student $15 The 2015-16 Season is powered by the choreography of award winning faculty as well as the masterworks of José Limón, Jerome Robbins, and in Spring Collection, Ohad Naharin. Commissions from over 20 companies around the world have placed Naharin in the forefront of contemporary choreographers, and UA Dance, with support from the Israel Institute and The Center for Judaic Studies, is honored to be able to include excerpts of his work in our final concerts of the year. Complimentary to the work of Naharin will be Amy Ernst’s In the Shadows of the Dreamers. In the 70 years that have passed since the liberation of Auschwitz, various remembrances have been created to honor the struggle of that time. To choral composer Eric Whitacre’s haunting “Five Hebrew Love Songs,” Ernst uses her dancers to separate dream from reality, despair from hope. Additional faculty works include one of Sam Watson’s signature pieces, Badum Boom, set to a lightning fast drum score recorded live in 1956. At the other end of the music spectrum will be James Clouser’s A Perfect Challenge, set to George Bizet’s “Chromatic Variations in C Major for Piano.” Classical in form, these variations suggest the romanticism of Schumann and Chopin, and at moments, the forward looking and transcendent harmonies of Liszt and Scriabin.

Additional faculty choreography will come from Elizabeth George and Tamara Dyke Compton, and two new works by Michael Williams include Rising, which celebrates the human spirit, and CATS in HATS (and this time no spats) -- a new duet for tap dancing “dudes.”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT is made possible through the generous support of Lori Mackstaller

While here as members of UA Dance, our young choreographers and dancers have showcased their work not only in Arizona, but across the country and beyond. Their “jump start” has been the time spent as a member of the UA Dance Ensemble, and while the faculty has offered one perspective, you, as audience members, have played a role as well. We thank you for that. And remember, Jump Start is just the beginning; not the end... UA Dance Ensemble members and student choreographers. Photo by Ed Flores.
