The Revolutionary War's battles and skirmishes in the Carolinas and Georgia were very different from those fought in the New England states. Colonials and Tories in the South fought with vicious convictions of either remaining within the Crown or becoming a separate nation. Learn about Monck’s Corner, Waxhaw, Ramseur’s Mill, Fishing Creek, Fishdam Ford, and other battles, as well as murder and plunder in the South, and the political and social consequences that ensued. The first major pandemic in recorded history began in 430 BCE, while the deadliest was the Black Death from 1347 to 1351. A GUIDE TO LEARNING WITH ZOOM & GOOGLE CLASSROOM Zoom Video Conferencing Application
Google Classroom
To access Zoom you will need a laptop or desktop (Windows or Mac), tablet, or smartphone (iPhone or Android).
This spring, in addition to regular class time through Zoom, courses will utilize Google Classroom. This Learning Management System will allow students and instructors to communicate and share handouts, presentations, and videos outside of regular class time. Members will be able to access it through their Gmail account.

Download the free and secure Zoom application to your device from the app store or Zoom.us/download. I f you haven’t used Zoom before, allow about 15 minutes for setup before first use. A Zoom account isn't required to attend course sessions. PLEASE NOTE: To improve your internet connection while using Zoom, we suggest closing other desktop applications and try to plug directly into the Ethernet port or wireless access point.

Once you register for a course, a Zoom link will be sent to registered members one week prior to the course start date.
The following equipment will enhance your experience: Web camera Increases your connection with your instructor and your peers by allowing you to see each other face-to-face. If you don’t have a camera, you will still be able to see the instructor Microphone Allows you to be heard during class. You don’t need fancy equipment—it can be headphones with a mic incorporated that you use with your smartphone. OLLI INSTRUCTORS Robert Anderson is a retired Boeing engineer. He holds a BS from the University of Southern MS, a MS from Troy University, and an MBA from Lindenwood University. He is an amateur Revolutionary War historian. He has given presentations across AL and the Southeast to schools, churches, and civic organizations as well as SAR and DAR Chapters. He does Revolutionary War interpretations as General Morgan. Tom Borcher, a retired trial attorney and White House historian, has entertained many groups with humorous stories and historical facts about the White House and its residents. He has been a guest speaker at several presidential libraries as well as civic organizations. Caitie Carr has a BS in earth systems science with a concentration in atmospheric science from The University of Alabama in Huntsville. She is currently the Associate Geospatial Analyst/Engineer at Hexagon US Federal. Donna Castellano, Executive Director of the Historic Huntsville Foundation, devotes much of her time to the research and preservation of Huntsville-Madison County’s historic buildings, homes, sites and neighborhoods. Donna received her MA in history from UAH, where she specialized in the antebellum south. Dr. William Confer retired from clinical psychology after 38 years of practice. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Professional Psychology and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. His first degree was in English literature and he currently studies etymology as a hobby. Maria Da Re was born and raised in Northern Italy, and moved to the US thanks to a scholarship to pursue a MS degree in Computer Engineering. After 10 years as a software engineer, she decided to pursue a career in the outdoors and explore other fields including languages, obtaining a Masters degree in translation/ interpretation in Italian/English. Bob Darnall grew up in a bridge playing household and started playing at about ten. Both his parents taught bridge and he is following their examples. A retired engineer who worked on Army missile programs, he is a regular at the Huntsville Bridge Center. Jeff Delmas holds degrees in mathematics from Millsaps College and in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech. He worked as a structural engineer on SpaceLab missions before joining Intergraph and spending the rest of his career in software development. Jeff is an avid amateur astronomer and the current Director of Observatories at the Von Braun Astronomical Society. Jennifer Ellinger, RN, is a graduate of UAH with a BS in Nursing. She has worked as an RN in both hospital ICU and office settings, giving her a unique perspective on health and disease prevention. The recipient of the 2018 National MS Society's 2018 Volunteer of the Year, she passionately lives on a quest to find joy in every situation she experiences—even when faced with her own health challenges. Rebekah Frank is a 500-RYT certified yoga teacher who focuses on making yoga accessible to all bodies, through the use of variations of poses and props. She aims to provide students with the knowledge to link the movements of the body with the breath and find what works best for their unique body.

Connie Glass is the founding partner of the Elder Law Firm of Connie Glass, P.C. She received her undergraduate and her law degree from the University of Alabama. She is one of only five certified elder law Attorneys in Alabama, having been certified by the National Elder Law Foundation. She is a member of the Alabama State Bar and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. She is a founding member of the Elder Law Section of the State Bar, having most recently served as the Chair of the Section. Philip E. Graham, a retired Naval officer, is a member of both the Sons of the American Revolution and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, as well as numerous other historical and genealogy societies. He is an avid hobbyist in the arts and science of genealogy focused upon Continental North America. Katie Greene (she/they) worked for three years at the Admissions Office at UAH, and now serves as the Education & Resource Specialist for the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI). You’ll find Katie outside in their freetimerunning, hiking, and exploring new places. Katie is a proud member of the Gender and Sexual Minorities (GSM) community. Barbara Johnson, BS, MS, former RD, has over 40 years of experience as a registered dietetic educator. She has taught and conducted research at Alabama A&M University, Oakwood University, and UAH. She has a unique and enjoyable ability to motivate people to improve their eating habits. Dr. Steve Jones is a forester (BS,1973, PhD 1987), author, retired educator (former president of four universities), and Earth steward dedicating his life to leaving this world a better place. His approach to OLLI education is passion-fueled, purpose-driven, and nature-driven.
Rainer Klauss holds a BA in English from Auburn University. He and his family moved to Huntsville in 1950. He worked as a librarian at Emory University and the Gwinnett County Public Library System in Georgia. Clifford Lanham has a BS from Jacksonville State University and an MBA from Florida Institute of Technology. His experience span 28 years in the US Army, owning his own business and teaching chemistry/physics in the Virginia Beach Public School System. Lee Ann Lawch has been a docent for The Smithsonian American Art Museum since 2009, leading outreach programs, gallery tours at the museum, and video conferences through SAAM's distance learning program, reaching schools, and inquisitive groups of all ages both domestically and internationally. Tennent Lee retired after practicing law in Huntsville for 43 years. He holds B.S. and J.D. degrees from the University of Alabama. Since his retirement Tennent has become an avowed "history junkie," especially military and political history. Ray Leftridge teaches Computer Technology Grades 5- 12, and serves as advisor for the yearbook at Oakwood Adventist Academy in Huntsville, AL. He has a BA in Communications and is currently pursuing a G Suite Certification. Ray has over 25 years of experience with photography and multimedia presentations using various software programs. Pat Long is a local multi-instrumentalist, singer/ songwriter, and lover of music theory. She has most recently taught beginning and intermediate ukulele courses along with the course "The Beatles: Beyond the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah"

John Mason was, for most of his adult life, a contracting specialist with the US Government. Now happily retired, he spends his time in Huntsville, Alabama studying the American Civil War, particularly as it relates to the state of Alabama. An author, he has written Heroes Afloat, and is working on other manuscripts. Lauren Millard is a financial advisor for Medbery and Millar in Birmingham, AL. She has also led a team of Risk Officers in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, where her primary responsibility was to ensure compliance with firm policies and regulators. Ale Pacheco is a proud UAH Alumna (BSBA Human Resource Management and MBA). She is originally from Lima, Peru and came to UAH 11 years ago. She is the OLLI Program Manager and has previously worked in the UAH Housing Department and Office of Admissions. One of her favorite things to do is travel. She and her husband love visiting new countries and cities around the world. Dr. Patti Patrick is a retired Associate Dean from the College of Business at the University of New Orleans with a PhD in Strategic Management from the University of Mississippi. She has participated in numerous classes as a retiree at Chautauqua Institution in western New York annually since 1999 and has led a short story analysis group In Huntsville for a number of years. Dona Pratt holds undergrad degrees in Math, Economics and English and an MA in Educational Technology. She began her career with IBM as a systems engineer and has worked with software and marketing companies. She moved to Huntsville three years ago from Connecticut where she held elected positions on town boards for twelve years.
Dr. Ken Rex holds a PhD in Astronomy and Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He taught physics and astronomy at the State University of New York and worked as a systems engineer for Lockheed Martin & Raytheon on Department of Defense radar, submarine, and missile projects. Rick Rodriguez & Tessa Lucas retired in 2017 from careers supporting the International Space Station. Their love of exploration led them to buy an RV so that they could experience this great nation — and our neighbor to the north. Val Seaquist is a UAH retiree and a graduate of UAH. She has taught Writing Your Life Story for five years and is looking forward to developing other classes. Kathy Sieja is a recently retired Licensed Counselor from a private practice in Huntsville. Kathy is enjoying travel, volunteer work, taking classes, and spending time with family. Dr. Harriett Somerville, Professor Emeritus, University of Alabama Tuscaloosa, received her PhD in cell biology from The University of Texas at Austin. She received postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago and the Medical Research Council, London. She retired after 35 years of service. David Strickland is a retired trial lawyer whose practice was focused almost exclusively on civil litigation. Relatively new to the Huntsville area, David has enjoyed OLLI courses and activities over the past 2 years.
Chris Stuhlinger is a recently retired forester and ISA Certified Arborist. His work experience over almost 40 years included forest management, research, extension, and urban forestry/arboriculture. Chris was employed as a research assistant/associate in Louisiana (LSU), a county/urban forester in Maryland, and as University Forester in University of Arkansas. He currently assists with tree-related activities at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens. David Styers is a retired professional engineer. He received his BS in Engineering and Master of Administrative Science degrees at UAH. In addition, David is a Fellow of ASTM International where he developed and wrote international product standards for the copper industry. Rexanne Warfel is a retired nurse from Harriburg, Pennsylvania. As a hobby, she enjoys cooking, baking, and cake decorating. She serves in the OLLI BOD as the OLLI Bonus Snack Coordinator. Susan Webb has accumulated 42 years learning to be a landscape designer, a horticulturist, a nursery owner, and even longer as an inquisitive lover of all things nature. She is at present growing into a new outlook for the future of plants and people. New ecological investigations and accumulated favorite plants are her support materials. Dr. Jennifer J. Wilhoit is a published author, spiritual ecologist, research scholar, editor, writing mentor, hospice/bereavement volunteer, life and nature guide, consultant, and peacemaker. She has designed, implemented, and taught interdisciplinary curricula in a variety of subjects including graduate courses. Her most recent books include Writing on the Landscape: Essays and Practices to Write, Roam, Renew and Weaned Seals and Snowy Summits: Stories of Passion for Place and Everyday Nature. Monica Yother is an artist and graphic designer, and has been art journaling for many years, leading small groups in this practice for 2 years. Monica lives in Huntsville and has a studio at Lowe Mill.

FAQs What if I cannot access my online account? To reset your password or username, select Forgot Password or Forgot Username on the registration login page. For further assistance, call 256.824.6183 to obtain your username and a temporary password. What is a "rolling" membership? Your OLLI at UAH membership will be valid for 12 (or 24) months beginning the date your membership was first processed. Your OLLI badge shows the date of membership expiration. How many courses may I take per term? You may take as many courses as you wish! The $20 tuition covers the entire term registration fee, plus the cost per course. Please see per course fee as identified in the course description. Can I get a refund if I decide to withdraw from courses? Due to the low cost at which these courses are provided and the additional cost to process refunds, no refund is given for those who wish to withdraw from courses. Please contact the Registration Office if you wish to drop a course to allow wait-listed members to enroll. What is the difference between the membership and course registration fees? The $25 membership fee provides all the membership benefits listed on page 2. The $20 tuition is paid per term for enrollment in as many courses as you wish. Per course fees vary by course. Does OLLI provide member financial assistance? Yes. For assistance information call 256.824.6183. Who attends OLLI courses? OLLI is identified as a lifelong learning organization for adults 50 and over, whether working, retired, or semi-retired. However, there is no set age requirement and you are welcome to join at any age! Who teaches OLLI courses? Course leaders are qualified members of OLLI, the University, and others who enjoy sharing their knowledge. OLLI is particularly proud of its volunteer teachers and speakers, many of whom are well-known experts in their fields. Do I need a permit to park on campus? For short term visits, members may park in a visitor's parking spot in the G5 lot in front of Wilson Hall. Members who need to come to campus for an extended length of time due to special circumstances must notify the CPS office at least two business days in advance. Members will receive a visitor permit to park in a visitor parking spot or any open faculty/staff or commuter zone if a visitor spot is unavailable.
