OLLI at UAH continues to provide various opportunities for our members to attend online courses, participate in social events, and enjoy bonus lectures. Learn about Alexander von Humboldt through a special exhibit with a docent from The Smithsonian American Art Museum. Humboldt was one of the most influential figures of the nineteenth century. His lively exchange of ideas about the arts, science, politics, and exploration, with influential figures such as Thomas Jefferson and Charles Willson Peale, helped shape American perceptions of nature and the way American cultural identity became grounded in our relationship with the environment.

Practically overnight, World War II became a ‘twoocean war’ that the US knew was coming but was illprepared for. The numerous narratives chronicling historic engagements between Allied-Axis forces largely disregard The Battle of the Atlantic–a struggle for control over a 32-million square mile expanse of unforgiving topography. The war’s longest battle was the single fulcrum upon which the rest of World War II depended. Explore from a U.S. naval perspective those key international events, strategic necessities, and sacrifices, both military and civilian, enabling the U.S. to prevail over a determined and capable foe. Pain Management with Tai Chi is designed using specific adaptive moves that have been developed over centuries to deal with pain relief. Examine the poetry of the first World War comparatively, in the contest of the different national cultures, and the common experience of the trenches of the Western Front. Focus on using yoga practices to reduce stress and healthy aging in the body. Postures and gentle movements will be used for relaxation and improving flexibility, balance, and joint health. Please wear comfortable clothing and plan a place to practice where you can see and hear the Zoom meeting. OLLI INSTRUCTORS Robert Anderson is a retired Boeing engineer. He holds a BS from the University of Southern MS, a MS from Troy University and an MBA from Lindenwood University. He is an amateur Revolutionary War historian. He has given presentations across AL and the Southeast to schools, churches and civic organizations as well as SAR and DAR Chapters. He does Revolutionary War interpretations as General Morgan. Talina Acklin is a licensed ABC Mixologist, and owner of Talina YourHost Event Bartending in Huntsville. With a bachelor’s degree in supply chain management/business management she applies her degree knowledge with practical and innovative methods to following her dreams. Elizabeth Aversa is a retired The University of Alabama (UA) faculty member. Although her career was in library & information science education, she was "raised on opera," and has enjoyed it all her life thanks to parents who introduced her to opera and to her husband with whom she enjoys operas at venues from the Met to UA Opera Theatre. Peter Baldaia is Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Huntsville Museum of Art. Since coming to Huntsville in 1994 from Rockford Museum in Brockton, MA, he has been instrumental in securing several blockbuster exhibitions as well as instituting local favorites such as the Encounters shows of Southern Art and the Red Clay juried exhibitions. He has been listed in Who's Who in American Art since 1995. Ann Beltz is the current Business Development Director for Brookdale Senior Living. For over 20 years, she has been helping seniors and their families become educated about choices in aging positively in their retirement years. She is a Mercer University in Macon, GA graduate. Glenn Cantley has a degree in corporate finance and investment management from The University of Alabama, and holds several professional designations, including the ChFC, PHR, and Retirement Plans Associate. Jennifer Carden is a member of HudsonAlpha's educational outreach team. With her background in education and molecular biology, Jennifer has played an important role in the institute's efforts to inspire and cultivate tomorrow's scientists. Caitie Carr has a BS in earth systems science with a concentration in atmospheric science from The University of Alabama in Huntsville. She is currently the Associate Geospatial Analyst/ Engineer at Hexagon US Federal. Rev. Dale Clem is a retired United Methodist Pastor, author of “Forty Days in the Wilderness: Prayers and Reflections along the Appalachian Trail,” and “Winds of Fury, Circles of Grace”. He has hiked the Camino de Santiago in Spain, the Jesus Trail in Israel, and over 1500 miles on the Appalachian Trail. Dr. William Confer retired from clinical psychology after 38 years of practice. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Professional Psychology and the American Board of Sleep Medicine. His first degree was in English literature and he currently studies etymology as a hobby. Karren Crowson is a retired pharmacist committed to volunteer work. She has a bachelors in Pharmacy from Samford University and MBA. from FIU. Her career included being Director of Pharmacy at Huntsville Hospital for 17 years. Crowson is secretary of the Executive Committee for Partnership for a Drug-Free Community’s Board of Directors. 14

Ruth Deramus is a native Alabamian. She holds multiple degrees and certifications in education. Ruth is a retired Montgomery County educator. She has been practicing Taoist Tai Chi for the past twenty-five years in Montgomery. She is certified at the Beginning and CIT (ContinuingIn-Training) levels with the Taoist Tai Chi Society USA. She enjoys reading, writing, arts and crafts. Dr. Bill Deutsch is a Research Fellow, Emeritus in the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences at Auburn University. He has worked as an aquatic ecologist and educator around rivers for forty years. He co-founded the Alabama Water Watch program for promoting citizen volunteer water monitoring, environmental education, and improved water policies. Dr. Vicki Earnest has been teaching English and French throughout her life. Since her retirement from full-time teaching at Calhoun in 2002, she has continued as an adjunct. In addition to attending ballets and musicals in support of her daughters, she enjoys traveling. Jennifer Ellinger, RN, is a graduate of UAH with a BS in Nursing. She has worked as an RN in both hospital ICU and office settings, giving her a unique perspective on health and disease prevention. The recipient of the 2018 National MS Society's 2018 Volunteer of the Year, she passionately lives on a quest to find joy in every situation she experiences-even when faced with her own health challenges. Dr. Adeola Fayemi is the Manager of the Diversity and Inclusion of the International Cultural Center at Auburn University. She earned a Ph.D. from FSU in Adult Education and Human Resource Development and has over twenty-five years of experience in K-12 and university teaching and leadership roles. Rebekah Frank is a 200-hour Yoga Alliance certified yoga teacher who focuses on making yoga accessible to all bodies, through the use of variations of poses and props. She aims to provide students with the knowledge to link the movements of the body with the breath and find what works best for their unique body. Philip E. Graham, a retired Naval officer, is a member of both the Sons of the American Revolution and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, as well as numerous other historical and genealogy societies. He is an avid hobbyist in the arts and science of genealogy focused upon Continental North America.

Susan Hazen Guthrie, is a Stage Director and Teaching Artist working extensively in Shakespeare. She is a Master Teacher of Voice and Speech, Language and verse literature, and curriculum specialist. She directed and consulted for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. She is the author and lead artist of Shakespeare in the Classroom. Ms. Guthrie lectures nationwide for the NEA and The Poetry Foundation: POETRY OUT LOUD. Jay Johnson is an Admissions Counselor and Social Media Coordinator at the UAH Office of Admissions. He is a UAH Alumnus and holds a bachelor’s in marketing and a master’s in Professional Communications. Jay has also served as a Marketing intern for the Office of Admissions, a Lead Admissions Ambassador, and a New Student Orientation Leader for UAH. Dr. Steve Jones is a forester (BS,1973, PhD 1987), author, retired educator (former president of four universities), and Earth steward dedicating his life to leaving this world a better place. His approach to OLLI education is passion-fueled, purpose-driven, and nature-driven. Steven Keiser has a B.A. in Sociology from Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville and has taught several college level Sociology classes while a graduate student. He spent most of his career as a civilian employee of the Army and retired in 2016. Clifford Lanham has a BS from Jacksonville State University and an MBA from Florida Institute of Technology. His experience span 28 years in the US Army, owning his own business and teaching chemistry/physics in the Virginia Beach Public School System. Lee Ann Lawch has been a docent for The Smithsonian American Art Museum since 2009, leading outreach programs, gallery tours at the museum, and video conferences through SAAM's distance learning program, reaching schools, and inquisitive groups of all ages both domestically and internationally. Marian Moore Lewis, Ph.D., is a retired Research Professor and manager of a NASA sponsored spaceflight project at UAH. Her career in virology, cell biology, cancer research and space biology spanned more than forty years. During her twentyyear NASA-related career, she designed biological experiments flown on fourteen shuttle missions. A life-long nature advocate, she now pursues her avocation—nature photography and writing Ann P. Linder spent her childhood and adolescence on army posts around the U.S. and in Germany, where she acquired her love of languages and history. She holds a B.A. in French Language and Literature and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. She she taught French and history at Montgomery Academy for 18 years. Ann is the author of two books on World War I: Princes of the Trenches, a study of the German combat narratives of that war, and World War I in 40 Posters, an examination of European and American propaganda posters. She is currently working on a book on World War II posters.


Pat Long is a local multi-instrumentalist, singer/ songwriter, and lover of music theory. She has most recently taught beginning and intermediate ukulele courses along with the course "The Beatles: Beyond the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" Lauren Millard is a financial advisor for Medbery and Millar in Birmingham, AL. She has also led a team of Risk Officers in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, where her primary responsibility was to ensure compliance with firm policies and regulators. Elliott Miller is a well-known photo-realistic artist. His oil portraits, acrylic paintings, and charcoal drawings have been seen in exhibitions, museums, libraries, schools, and private collections nationwide. Dr. Tim Miller was a NASA atmospheric researcher for 30 years before retiring a few years ago. As a NASA scientist, he taught atmospheric science courses at UAH. Tim has studied French, Italian, and German, but is most proficient in Spanish. He often sings in one or more of those languages, as well as in Latin, with the Huntsville Master Chorale. Dr. Terry Olivet is a retired cardiovascular surgeon who has had a lifelong love of theatre. Since his retirement, he has contributed many volunteer hours to Theatre Tuscaloosa, mostly involving backstage work with scenery construction, stage lighting and rigging, production deck crew, and a few onstage appearances. He has taught OLLI classes on Musical Theatre. Elisabeth Palmer was born and raised in Central Florida. Growing up, she developed a love for museums and being creative. This love inspired her to earn her B.A. in Art History and Museum Studies from Florida State University and M.A.T. in Museum Education from George Washington University. Before moving to Montgomery and joining the MMFA staff, Elisabeth lived and worked in Washington, DC where she taught museum studies and art history classes to high school students and led school tours at Tudor Place, a historic house in Georgetown. At the MMFA, she designs and facilitates programs for the teen council, young adults, and adults. Dr. Patti Patrick is a retired Associate Dean from the College of Business at the University of New Orleans with a PhD in Strategic Management from the University of Mississippi. She has participated in numerous classes as a retiree at Chautauqua Institution in western New York annually since 1999 and has led a short story analysis group In Huntsville for a number of years. Lisa Peterson is an eight-year certified Jazzercise franchise owner who leads choreographed group fitness classes with various Jazzercise class formats including Dance MIxx, LO (Impact), and Strength. Lisa loves that Jazzercise is the original dance party workout that has remained the world's leading dance fitness. Mike Reinke grew up in the fifties and sixties during the peak of the folk music revival. While in retirement, he has developed a pronounced avocational interest in the history of American folk and roots music and in how this music has influenced American culture. He has been working on an OLLI course sequence on the subject for approximately two years. Dr. Ken Rex holds a PhD in Astronomy and Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He taught physics and astronomy at the State University of New York and worked as a systems engineer for Lockheed Martin & Raytheon on Department of Defense radar, submarine, and missile projects.

David Reyes, Curator of Exhibitions and Collections, has served at the Huntsville Museum of Art since 1994. He formerly worked at the Rockford Art Museum in Rockford, IL. He has worked on over 300 major exhibitions at the Huntsville Museum of Art and has juried numerous regional independent art competitions, most recently the 2013 Dogwood Festival in Knoxville, TN. Richard Rhone has taught American history classes for OLLI for over a decade after retiring from careers in public education administration as well as child abuse and neglect prevention. His topics generally range from the American Colonial/ Revolutionary War through the War Between the States and the Wild West with an emphasis on the personalities and social aspects of history. His doctorate is from The University of Alabama. Val Seaquist is a UAH retiree and a graduate of UAH. She has taught Writing Your Life Story for five years and is looking forward to developing other classes. Dr. Harriett Somerville, Professor Emeritus, University of Alabama Tuscaloosa, received her PhD in cell biology from The University of Texas at Austin. She received postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago and the Medical Research Council, London. She retired after 35 years of service. Barbara Staggs is a retired Special Education Teacher. A member of the Huntsville Photographic Society, she achieved the rank of Master Photographer and was awarded the President's Trophy for Photographic Competitions in 2007. She has been an OLLI instructor for many years, serves as a judge for the OLLI Photo Contest, and loves hiking and sharing her adventures with friends. Chris Stuhlinger is a recently retired forester and ISA Certified Arborist. His work experience over almost 40 years included forest management, research, extension, and urban forestry/arboriculture in Louisiana, Maryland, and Arkansas.Chris is an avid traveler and has visited 49 U.S. states and 16 foreign countries. He had the opportunity to visit the destinations covered in this course between 2007 and 2016. Chris has recently taught two other OLLI courses about tree care and travels to Alaska. David Styers is a retired professional engineer. He received his BS in Engineering and Master of Administrative Science degrees at UAH. In addition, David is a Fellow of ASTM International where he developed and wrote international product standards for the copper industry. Teresa Taylor-Duncan is a police officer with 17 years’ experience, the last seven at the Madison Police Department. She has a BS in Criminal Justice Administration and is on Partnership’s board.

In this role, Dale works with prospective high school students as they navigate the college search process, providing information on UAH's history, programs, and various other opportunities. A native of Huntsville, AL, Dale completed his undergraduate education at UAH, receiving his B.S.B.A. in Marketing, and will complete his graduate studies in May 2021. Pamela Tejes is a certified yoga teacher with over 200 hours of training compliant with Yoga Alliance guidelines. She is a graduate of Loyola University with a BS in Biology, is certified in CPR/ AED/First Aid, and is experienced in teaching yoga for all ages. Rexanne Warfel is a retired nurse from Harriburg, Pennsylvania. As a hobby, she enjoys cooking, baking, and cake decorating. She serves as the OLLI Bonus Snack Coordinator. Pamela Watson is a retired teacher from California. She has taught English, science, communications and has owned a PR firm. She has been teaching for OLLIs in California for more than 10 years. Susie Webster is the Administrative Support Specialist for the International Cultural Center at Auburn University. She received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Auburn University. Through her experiences in event coordination, student organizations, consultation and advising, Susie has gained invaluable knowledge on serving the diverse populations in higher education. Debbie West graduated from UAH with a bachelor's degree in art. Awarded two Fulbright Scholarships for the study of art in China and Turkey, she has traveled extensively in Europe to study original works of the Masters. She taught art in the Huntsville City School System for 25 years. Mike Woods is in long-term recovery working to help others find the path to recovery through Partnership’s new Recovery Resource Hub where he is a state certified peer support specialist. Monica Yother is an artist and graphic designer, and has been art journaling for many years, leading small groups in this practice for 2 years. Monica lives in Huntsville and has a studio at Lowe Mill.

OLLI at UAH won second place in the second round of Woo-Hoo! moments at the Osher National Resource Center Virtual Conference! What is a Woo-Hoo! moment? It is one of those wonderful, amazing, out of the box experiences that have occurred in our OLLI this past year. For the contest, we submitted the course: Black and White: Conundrums on Race together with the Civil Rights Day Trip to Birmingham, AL. FAQs What if I cannot access my online account? To reset your password or username, select Forgot Password or Forgot Username on the registration login page. For further assistance, call 256.824.6183 to obtain your username and a temporary password. What is a "rolling" membership? Your OLLI at UAH membership will be valid for 12 (or 24) months beginning the date your membership was first processed. Your OLLI badge shows the date of membership expiration. How many courses may I take per term? You may take as many courses as you wish! The $20 tuition is the registration fee for the entire term. Per course fees vary. The description for each course lists its fee. Can I get a refund if I decide to withdraw from courses? Due to the low cost at which these courses are provided and the additional cost to process refunds, no refund is given for those who wish to withdraw from courses. Please contact the Registration Office if you wish to drop a course to allow wait-listed members to enroll. What is the difference between the membership and course registration fees? The $25 membership fee provides all the membership benefits listed on page 2. The $20 tuition is the registration fee for the entire term. Per course fees vary. Does OLLI provide member financial assistance? Yes. For assistance information call 256.824.6183. Who attends OLLI courses? OLLI is identified as a lifelong learning organization for adults 50 and over, whether working, retired, or semi-retired. However, there is no set age requirement and you are welcome to join at any age! Who teaches OLLI courses? Course leaders are qualified members of OLLI, the University, and others who enjoy sharing their knowledge. OLLI is particularly proud of its volunteer teachers and speakers, many of whom are well-known experts in their fields. Do I need a permit to park on campus? For short term visits, members may park in a visitor's parking spot in the G5 lot in front of Wilson Hall. Members who need to come to campus for an extended length of time due to special circumstances must notify the CPS office at least two business days in advance. Members will receive a visitor permit to park in a visitor parking spot or any open faculty/staff or commuter zone if a visitor spot is unavailable.
