Traffic Signal Timing, Detection and Advanced Operations – September 30, 2020
Day 1
Discusses traffic signal terminology, traffic signal timing objectives, benefits, characteristics and strategies for coordinated and noncoordinated intersections. Simulation examples will illustrate the functionality of several controller parameters related to current guidelines on detection system design for low and high speed approaches. Volume Density, Traffic Signal Priority Control, Traffic Responsive Control, Adaptive Traffic Signal Control and Preemption will be discussed.
Traffic Signal Installation and Maintenance – October 1, 2020
Day 2
Presents components of a traffic signal system and appropriate traffic signal installation and maintenance procedures for traffic signal controllers, conflict monitors, load switches, detection and communication systems on National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) TS-2 cabinets. Installation and maintenance guidelines of traffic signal supports and indications will also be provided. General information on the design and interpretation of traffic signal plans and a checklist for preventive and responsive maintenance will also be discussed. Information regarding liability and negligence will be presented in addition to guidelines to reduce agency exposure to lawsuits.
Traffic Signal Performance Measures and Controller Programming – October 2, 2020
Day 3
Discusses Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPMs) and presents guidelines to identify appropriate operational objectives based on typical observed conditions. Presents available mitigating strategies that can have an appreciable effect on overall system performance. Students will also experiment with controller parameters on a realistic simulation environment and will be presented with information on how to navigate traffic signal controller menus, including programming instructions and interactive examples on timing parameters, detection, coordination and advanced functions.
