The University at Albany sits at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers on the traditional lands of the Kanien’keháka and Muh-he-con-neok people, who stewarded this land for generations before the arrival of European colonists. The Kanien’keháka (People of the Flint) and Muh-he-con-neok (People of the Waters that are Never Still) are more commonly known today as the Mohawk Haudenosaunee and StockbridgeMunsee Band of Mohicans. Despite the similarity of their westernized names, the Mohawk and Mohican were culturally and linguistically distinct. The UAlbany community recognizes that we live and work on the homelands of sovereign Indigenous nations with rich histories and cultures that continue today – both within New York and beyond. As an institution devoted to teaching, scholarship, and service, we strive to understand and learn from our history and to affirm Indigenous rights and issues. About the Composer/Conductor Brett Wery is the Principal Conductor of the CRWE. He assumed the duties in 2003 when founder, Joseph Miller stepped down from the position. Mr. Wery is an active composer/ arranger in the Capital Region area of upstate New York. He is the Music Director/Conductor of the Capital Region Wind Ensemble in Schenectady, NY and composer/editor for Sonata Grendel Publishing in Scotia, NY. For twenty-five years he taught theory, conducting, and applied woodwind studies at the State University of New York, Schenectady County Community College where he also directed the college wind ensemble. As a professor at SUNY Schenectady, Wery has been the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, and the SCCC Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. Wery later served as Dean of the School of Music at SUNY Schenectady before retiring from academic administration to pursue composition, conducting and performance full time. An award-winning member of ASCAP and SCI, Wery’s compositions have been performed and recorded around the world and include Quarry Songs for soprano, baritone, and piano, Dance Variations and Strains for Flute Quintet, Oot-kwatah for chamber orchestra, Four World Variants for Clarinet Quartet, and Sonata for Multiple Woodwinds and Piano. Wery’s 2013 String Quartet was the 2021 Grand Prize winner of the Classic Pure Vienna International Music Competition. In addition to composing and conducting, Wery is an active woodwind doubler - performing on flute, clarinet and saxophone. About Quintocracy
The wind quintet Quintocracy, based in the Capital District of New York, presents concerts and workshops throughout the area and beyond. Quintocracy has a diverse repertoire ranging from the Baroque to the present, including works written expressly for the quintet. Its members are flutist Melanie Chirignan, oboist Kelly Lockwood, guest clarinetist Allegra Smith, hornist Kathryn Svatek, and bassoonist Sue Daves. Coming together in January 2019 with the idea that chamber music is for everyone—meaning not just for the concert hall, but also for museums, churches, libraries, school presentations, and house concerts as well—the members of Quintocracy set their goal to build community, by performing exemplary music programs and engaging audiences through conversation and humor. Quintocracy partnered with the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall (TSBMH) as artists in residence and presented a four-part concert series featuring women composers. As a part of this residency, Quintocracy teamed up to be a part of the TSBMH outreach program, whose goals are to bring music to the Troy City School District after-school program with plans to
extend the outreach to other Capital Region school districts and programs. Continuing the focus on building community, the quintet performed Creative Pairings concerts combining cuisine with cultural music including Tunes and Tacos and Crepes and Classical music a la Francaise. Quintocracy has performed in the TSBMH Music at Noon concert series, at Round Lake Auditorium, the College of Saint Rose, the New York State Museum, the Albany International Airport, Westminster Presbyterian church, on the St. Andrews’s Russel Field Concert Series, Troy Public Library, the Concert at the Gazebo Series in Niskayuna Town Hall, the Freedom Park Series, and has been awarded Musician Performance Trust Fund grants from the local musicians’ unions to perform at nearby schools. Quintocracy has been awarded the Schenectady Community Arts grant and premiered Tales and Toots, newly composed music to accompany the beautiful story Keller’s Heart written by John Gray. In 2021, the group was awarded another Schenectady Community Arts grant to work with Electric City Puppets to dramatize the Peter and the Wolf-like Piece, Berus in the Woods by Alexander Ford which premiered at Proctors, where they performed for over 500 students at TSBMH. The group continued on to win an award from Saratoga Arts to commission new music for the silent films Nosferatu as well as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari by local composers. Members have performed regionally with the Glens Falls Symphony, Octavo Singers, Albany Pro Musica, the Albany Symphony, as well as at Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, Seiji Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, Symphony Space in New York City, and for Amazon’s television show Mozart in the Jungle.
