Program Notes

William Lauricella is a 17-year-old pianist, percussionist and composer. He started private piano lessons at age 5, and percussion lessons at age 9. William has attended the Juilliard Pre-College and the Manhattan School of Music Pre-college programs. He is currently studying piano with Manhattan PreCollege teacher, Dr. Inesa Sinkevych. He has won a number of prestigious piano competitions, most recently the 2022 Manhattan School of Music Precollege Philharmonic Piano Concerto Competition, the 2022 CDCYM Chopin CompetitionMaster level category, the 2022 & 2021 Luzerne Music Center International Senior Concerto Competition, and the 2023 & 2020 ESYO Lois Lyman Concerto Competition. William will be performing Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto with the Schenectady Symphony on January 21, 2024.

William is a member of the Empire State Youth Orchestra’s Youth Percussion Ensemble and the Principal Timpanist in the Empire State Youth Orchestra. He currently studies percussion with Richard Albagli

David Maslanka (1943-2017) is an American composer who has written more than 150 works for wind ensemble, choir, chamber music (especially for percussion), and symphony orchestra. He has witten 10 symphonies, 15 concerti and a full mass.

Many of his marimba works were influenced by marimba virtuoso Leigh Howard Stevens, who advised David on the possibilities of the instrument and special effects (different kinds of rolls, attacking points, etc.). As a result the works are quite idiomatic to the instrument, technically challenging and musically complex. His most popular solo marimba work, “My Lady White” was performed on this stage at the Festival of contemporary Music last month by today’s soloist, William Lauricella. The Empire State Youth Percussion Ensemble has performed two of his major Ensemble pieces, “Crown of Thorns” and his massive concerto for marimba and percussion ensemble, “Arcadia II.” This is the first area performance of “Variations on Lost Love.
