Department of Music and Theatre University at Albany presents:
The
Choral Hour When Music Sounds UAlbany Chamber Singers UAlbany Chorale Michael Lister, Conductor Trevor Kahlbaugh, Collaborative Pianist
Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 3pm
Main Theatre UAlbany Performing Arts Center
Note from the Director
When Music Sounds is a poem by Walter de la Mare that contemplates the power of music to transport one from the immediate into the eternal, connecting past present, and hopes for the future into one shining moment of experience. This powerful reflection of the meaning of music that is both intensely personal but also made more meaningful when being shared has been a theme that has been ever-present as the UAlbany Chorale and Chamber Singers have prepared for this moment when live choral music is once again heard in concert at the University at Albany and thus serves as a fitting title for our concert. This concert is also a first for me in my position at The University at Albany. I am indebted to the current faculty as well as those who have held my position in these past years for their commitment to the choral ensemble experience at the university, one which I treasure and am grateful to be able to add my part to the treasured legacy of music at UAlbany. We are also pleased to partner with students in the Department of Music and Theater and thank them and their private voice instructors Frances Wittmann and Rachel MacKenzie for sharing their music today. While there is a multiplicity of style and expression represented in the music performed today, all shares certain aspects that celebrate the place of music in community. Songs such as Remember and The Lamb allow us to ponder the pairing of masterful poetry with music that so effectively transports the verse. Folk and cultural music from Israel (Bahana Haba’ah), Scotland (O Whistle and I’ll Come To Ye), and South Africa (Umahlalela) offers us insight to the music of diverse communities that share the common experience of making music in everyday activities. Songs such as Rain Come Down and The Storm Is Passing Over reflect the shared struggle, pain, and hope that we see and experience in our world today. Sprinkled in with these songs from different cultures and times are selections that comment on music and singing as a vital and essential part of the human experience, and one that we are grateful to be able to have live with you today. Dr. Michael Lister, Director of Choirs University at Albany

Le long du quai les grands vaisseaux, Que la houle incline en silence, Ne prennent pas garde aux berceaux Que la main des femmes balance.
Along the quay the great ships, Listing silently with the surge, Pay no heed to the cradles Rocked by women’s hands.
Mais viendra le jour des adieux, Car il faut que les femmes pleurent, Et que les hommes curieux Tentent les horizons qui leurrent.
But the day of parting will come, For it is decreed that women shall weep, And that men with questing spirits Shall seek enticing horizons.
Et ce jour-là les grands vaisseaux, Fuyant le port qui diminue, Sentent leur masse retenue Par l’âme des lointains berceaux.
And on that day the great ships, Leaving the dwindling harbour behind, Shall feel their hulls held back By the soul of the distant cradles.
