When teaching acting here at UAlbany, as I have done for over 20 years, I often draw parallels between good performance and good sports manship. What is ensemble, after all, other than a theatrical team? THE WOLVES, by Sarah DeLappe, is an ensemble piece . . . one of the best in recent memory. Directing it with student actors has been a wonderful opportunity to explore concepts of rhythm, pace, action, and both verbal and non verbal communication. It is also quite a physical show, and to orchestrate bodies in harmony toward a common goal while also working in-the-round has been a delightful challenge.
Simultaneously, each character in THE WOLVES is individual and uni que. Encouraging my cast to uncover the opportunities the play wright gives each actor to create a fully formed and rich inner life with specific motivations and back story – has led to many meaning ful discoveries in rehearsal.
You, the audience, are our final piece of the puzzle. Thank you for coming on this journey with us, as we continue to discover the stories that the fascinating young women who populate THE WOLVES are here to tell you.
You can’t really play if you’re scared of the ball.
