BRIEF OVERVIEW OF INDUSTRY AFFILIATE PROGRAMS (IAP)

WHAT IS AN IAP?

An IAP provides a gateway for researchers/faculty and the private sector to explore fundamental research topics of mutual interest. Companies gain access to research capabilities and infrastructure in exchange for annual membership fees. A program also serves as the connection between campus innovators and industry by cultivating ideas, uncovering pathways to market, and fostering commercial collaborations that translate academic research into services, treatments, and products that benefit society.

WHERE CAN IAP FUNDING BE DIRECTED?

The idea is to create a flexible model after researching other IAPs, discussing the concept with key offices, researchers/faculty, and stakeholders on campus, and understanding the needs of regional industry partners. As a result, the office, in collaboration with other UAlbany offices, created seven pathways that include:

1) Sponsored research, 2) Multi-year grant exploration, 3) Experiential learning opportunities, 4) Workforce development, 5) Entrepreneurial opportunities, 6) Creating new intellectual property, and 7) Licensing.

PURPOSE

An IAP lowers barriers to collaboration between companies and academic researchers and students while connecting industry partners to groundbreaking research, emerging technologies, and talent acquisition opportunities. Working with industry inspires new ideas, supports innovative research, creates opportunities for students, supports businesses, and keeps research contemporary.

SOLVES MULTIPLE PROBLEMS

A disjointed effort is found across the university regarding engagement, relationship cultivation, and securing agreements with industry. This program creates a streamlined, concerted effort to formalize an organized approach to industry partnerships. This will also streamline future grant pipelines that require industry endorsements or partnerships. Often, strategic industry connections are not recognized, or the time needed by researchers/faculty to find these

opportunities is limited because of teaching or service. This program creates a natural bridge to identifying and creating multi-member relationships that align with research or lab priorities.

WHO CAN CREATE AN IAP?

With the help of the Office of Economic Development, Entrepreneurship, and Industry Partnerships, any researcher/faculty member who oversees a center – or any school planning to create a new center – can create an IAP. During the information session, we guide you through the timelines, steps for industry engagement, and finding a pool of potential partners.
