UBC CME/CPD Course Calendar • September 2011 - June 2012

Update from the Division We have had a busy and productive year at UBC CPD. The “highlight” of the year was our five-yearly accreditation by the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME). University CME/CPD offices, just like undergraduate and postgraduate programs, must be accredited every few years to ensure the highest educational and ethical standards are being maintained. It’s a daunting process which includes compiling a self-study and culminates in a two-day visit from CACME representatives who meet with various stakeholders within and outside the Faculty. Formal notification of the results won’t arrive until late fall, but informally, we have been told that we’ve done very well. Of the dozen or so strengths the surveyors mentioned, we are particularly proud of our innovative programming, our relationships with external stakeholders and our excellent staff. The identified weaknesses were in the area of addressing the needs of the other health professions in the Faculty of Medicine and in providing options for self-directed learning, two areas we are starting to address. Accreditation is one mechanism which enables us to continuously improve our UBC CPD Division and the educational programming and research services we offer. One area where university CME/CPD offices often struggle is in offering services to specialist physicians. We have partnered with the Royal College to engage Dr. Jeff Plant, an Emergency Physician from Penticton, BC to begin working with our UBC CPD Division. Jeff is both the Royal College CPD Educator for BC and UBC CPD’s Medical Director of Specialty CPD. He is currently working on increasing access to videoconferenced specialty rounds across the province and on a multi-disciplinary CPD conference for specialists. The Rural Continuing Professional Development (RCPD) program and its Medical Director Dr. Tandi Wilkinson have enlisted Jeff’s help in developing a virtual journal club for rural internists that will start this fall (see page 7). This accredited program will help link specialists to their colleagues through an online learning platform and will facilitate discussion of key articles in Internal Medicine.

We would like to take this opport unit y to thank Dr. Bob Bluman, whose term as Assistant Dean, UBC CPD ended June 30, 2011. During the more than 20 years that Bob has been involved in continuing education and more particularly during his time as Assistant Dean from 20032011, Bob has contributed to our Division in countless ways. Bob has a tremendous ability to engage key stakeholders and to move initiatives forward. He has been a true champion for UBC CPD, but more importantly, has advocated for CME that meets the needs of practitioners. Bob is moving on to a new role at UBC CPD. As Medical Director Special Projects, he will continue to be involved with the RCPD programs and will lead our efforts in developing opportunities for self-directed learning. We have very much enjoyed working with Bob and look forward to continuing to take advantage of his expertise and wisdom in a different capacity. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Ran Goldman as the new Assistant Dean , UBC CPD as of September 1, 2011. Dr. Ran Goldman comes to this role from his position as Chief of the academic Division of Emergency Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at BC Children’s hospital. Ran is passionate about research, clinical medicine and education and has been highly involved with physician continuing education for most of his career. He has developed curricula for several large and highly effective CPD events. These CPD activities, along with his clinical work, have given him a broad understanding of the CPD needs of physicians. Dr. Goldman has a special interest in program evaluation, as well as in new and ongoing collaborations and partnerships in the area of knowledge transfer and CPD programming to support improved physician practice that will promote better patient health outcomes. We are very excited about working with Ran and supporting him to evolve the Division to meet the needs of practitioners in BC.

The issues we will address include: prematurity, non-accidental injury, congenital cataract, 3rd World eye care, public health and the burgeoning knowledge arising from our expanding understanding of genetics and its clinical implications.

Voted by 92% of participants as “more fun than Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals”. Four exciting days of learning, networking and of course, recreation! Special Guests - EM RAP: Discussion (and a debate) with Drs. Mel Herbert and Stuart Swadron - live via Skype! Plus Dr. David Kuhl, Dr. Robert Vissers, Dr. Brian H. Rowe and several popular St. Paul’s presenters.

The Western Canadian Children’s Heart Network in partnership with the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress are excited to be hosting the annual CCC-opening day paediatric cardiology symposium. This year, the theme of sudden death continues to grow in complexity and scope. APLS: Assess and manage critically ill children during the first hours in the emergency. ACLS Provider Course: Evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia arrest. Intended for experienced clinicians with at least one ACLS course.
