Message from the Dean

T

oday you take a huge step on one of the most important journeys in your academic and professional careers. The next four years are critical to the development of your skills, knowledge and compassion as the next generation of pharmacists. They are also essential to the cultivation of a network of relationships with your fellow classmates, mentors, and this Faculty – relationships that will enrich your experience as UBC Pharm Sci students and, once you graduate, as our alumni. You are the first to enter the Faculty as students of our new Entry-to-Practice PharmD program. Together with your peers in years two, three and four of the BSc(Pharm) program, you will be learning from expert faculty members what it means to be in this profession and what you need to provide quality patient care. Today’s ceremony is also important for another reason. To be a pharmacist is to be respected, trusted, and impactful. As a pharmacist, you have the ability to make a real and lasting difference in the health and welfare of others. And as a graduate of this Faculty, your degree will lead you to a wide variety of career paths in teaching, research and practice. Pharmacy is a profession that continues to undergo significant change. More and more, pharmacists the world over are demonstrating how integral they are to health care systems. They are also proving how they can adapt to the increasing advances in technology, discoveries in science, and needs of patients. For the duration of your time with us you will contribute in your own way to that movement and continue to do so once you complete your studies. By working together, we can all shape the profession of pharmacy for the better. Congratulations and best wishes. Sincerely,

Michael Coughtrie, PhD Professor and Dean

Message from the BC Pharmacy Association

O

n behalf of the BC Pharmacy Association, it’s my pleasure to welcome you as you embark on your career as pharmacists. As the Class of 2019, you’re choosing a career that’s expanding and changing and playing an increasing key role in healthcare delivery in the province. The BCPhA is proud to continue serving as co-presenter of UBC’s annual White Coat Ceremony.

The Association, which represents more than 3,000 community pharmacists and 850 pharmacy members across BC, has a long-standing partnership with UBC’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. One needs to only look around at the Pharmaceutical Sciences building to see the support and commitment that both the Association and our members have given to UBC. One thing the BCPhA takes great pride in is our student ambassador program here at UBC. This program begins the foundational role in helping young pharmacists engage with the profession and allows us to learn about issues facing students. By undertaking your pledge of professionalism today, you are promising to uphold the standards and ethics that are not only required of pharmacists, but are expected of you by patients and the public. Pharmacists take great pride that they are one of the most trusted professions. We congratulate you in selecting your career in pharmacy. It is rewarding and makes a significant difference in patients’ lives. We look forward to welcoming you as a student member of BCPhA and a registered pharmacist four years from now.

Pledge of Professionalism

F

or students in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at The University of British Columbia, there is a need to build and reinforce a professional identity founded on integrity, ethical behaviour, and honour. This development, a vital process in pharmacy education, will help ensure that you are true to the professional relationship you establish between yourself and society as you become a member of the pharmacy community. Integrity will be an essential part of your everyday life and it is incumbent upon you to pursue all academic and professional endeavors with honesty and commitment to service. To accomplish this goal of professional development, I as a student in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at The University of British Columbia will: ACCEPT the responsibility for my actions as a student and as a health care professional that will reflect on both myself and my school. CONSIDER the needs of others before myself. DEVELOP a sense of loyalty and duty to the profession of pharmacy by contributing to the well-being of others and by accepting accountability for membership in the profession. FOSTER professional competency through life-long learning and striving for high ideals, teamwork, and unity within the profession. COMMIT to the Oath of a Pharmacist and the Code of Ethics for Pharmacists as set forth by the profession. DEDICATE my life and practice to excellence by an ongoing reassessment of personal and professional values. MAINTAIN the highest ideals and professional attributes to ensure optimal patient care. *Adapted from the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Pledge of Professionalism
