Message from the Chair Know your Role…and don’t blink….it’s changing. Change is all around us – it’s with us today, it’s already behind us, and it’s certainly in front of us. Don’t blink or you’re going to miss something! The College mission statement is “To protect the public by ensuring that College registrants provide safe and effective pharmacy care to help people achieve better health.” It is a very important privilege and responsibility that the government permits us to be a self regulating profession. The College Board is composed of the most significant stakeholders in achieving our mission statement: the pharmacists that will achieve the mission statement, and the public, as represented by the Government Appointees. And soon we will add regulated pharmacy technicians to our Board as another important stakeholder. We are very pleased and excited to have this new registrant join us in 2011. The College also has a significant role to play in the strategic planning of the future of the health care system in general. Did you know that by the year 2020 the number of people over the age of 65 will have increased four times over the number in 2010? Did you know that the first of the baby boomers are turning 65 years of age this year? We’ve been talking for years about the strain that this bulge in population will put on the health care system. It’s happening now. How will Governments meet the heath care needs of this group of people? One important solution is to have all health care professionals practice to their full scope. We need to continually find more effective ways to improve patient health. Your College has a role here as well, to shape pharmacy policy and legislation that allows pharmacists to make the largest impact possible to improving health outcomes. We have many examples already behind us in the past several years. Prescription adaptations, pharmacist immunizing, and medication review services are some significant examples. Adding regulated pharmacy technicians as a registrant that will be responsible for the medication distribution, allows pharmacists more time, as the medication experts, to focus on patient care. We are very fortunate in BC to have excellent relationships between the stakeholders that shape pharmacy. The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC, Government, the BCPhA, the College, industry, community and hospital pharmacy, and other health care professionals all have a contribution to make. Together, BC is leading Canada in advancing the profession of pharmacy. The quality of people in these stakeholders is second to none. Now it’s time for you to roll up your sleeves. Get involved and stay involved – with your employer, the BCPhA, the College, the Faculty, your peers and most importantly, your patients. They need you. The most effective way to advance the profession of pharmacy is to improve patients’ health, one patient at a time. You will have the opportunity to instill this expectation with each and every interaction you have in your new role. Take this important opportunity and responsibility and run with it. The future of pharmacy is upon us and it’s in this room today. It’s all of you. Congratulations,
Randy Konrad Chair, College of Pharmacists of BC
